Hi all -
I'm going to Norfolk for the send off but as this is my sons first deployment I'm not exactly sure what happens during the send off. Is it basically everyone gathers at the pier when they leave or is there more to it than that? Sorry, as I re-read this it sounds like a really stupid question but all this Navy stuff is new to me (my husband is retired Air Force). Thanks for your help.
Twinzplus1 I have only been to the homecoming which was awesome! My Husband and Son are going to pick up my Sailor Son pick-up but wont be able to see the ship off.:(
We are planning on attending send off. I don't know if we are on the ombudsman list (or what the email address is) so would appreciate any information you can provide on this site. Sometimes it is more informative than the official word. Thank you. We fly in on the 5th and are registered at the Lodge already.
I so wish I could be there for send off, but I won't be able to either. I plan to be there for the home coming. This is my son's first deployment so I am not sure what all to expect either. Keeping up here and on the ship Facebook pages. I am kinda getting sad already. Gonna miss him so so much!
Also I'm in a group on FB that has been an awesome resource and has a pretty impressive (according to the CO) FRG: https://www.facebook.com/groups/198350693533193/ Look for Krista Bowers when you get there, she says she would be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has.
I was not able to be there today either but I sure hope I am there for the homecoming. I did get a text this morning from my son that said I love you. It made me cry but I was glad I got it.
Everyone yhats not, needs to be on the Family Support for USS Bataan Facebook page. Its a closed group maintained by the Omsbudsmen. You have to tell them your relationship to your Sailor. They have posted lots of pictures and videos.
Hi I'm new to this group, my son just got flown out to the ship today. He was able to call us when he arrived. I asked him what it was like and he said VERY BIG lol.
Just received this link from my son. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CIgaCP0quo The ship rescued 282 persons of the coast of Malta. Here is a video of some of the work our sailors and marines do! God Bless America.
. Thanks navy moms, you have all been a blessing to me. My son joined the navy 4 years ago, and couldn't have made it without the support of everyone from all the groups with Navy for Moms. He has been home now for about 2 months. He has been with his brother and dad everyday on the farm and loving being back home again. me too!! Curtis left today for college orientation at mizzou. He will be leaving us again in the fall for college, this time won't be near as hard as when he left to join the Navy. Love you all and so good to have this group, I will keep in touch and Special thank you to our wonderful military everywhere in the world right now. So proud !!
That sounds awesome! I'll def be up for that. I have another question - I followed the proper channels to contact the Ombudsman for our ship, but it has been a month and no one has gotten back to me. I want to make sure I'm on the list to be contacted for anything ombudsmen contact folks for. The protocol I followed was the one outlined on this sight that Marcy directed me to. Is there another way to do that? Or does it normally take that long?
Details of the Tiger Cruise have not been finalized yet. Please be careful about what you say as to when it is and where the ship is. This is really for new members to this blog.
Hi everyone! I joined the FB groups mentioned below for FRG and was getting posts, but now all of a sudden, neither group shows up on my page. Did something happen to the pages? Or could i have been removed for some reason?
I am experiencing the same problem forever proud. Not sure why. Maybe there is no posting to see. I am on the email list for FRG so I am getting information though.
Thisgirl97 are you going thru the FB page? That is where i had to go to join in. And Whodamom i did find the pages again. I had to "expand" the Group category as they had just fallen to the bottom of the list.
@ Forever proud - yes, I've put in a request on the fb page & sent an email to ombudsmen Kim and to batargmembership@gmail.com. I wasn't sure how to answer the rotation end date question; but sent all the other info.
Thisgirl i never received a reply to my email, i just realized the group was now open to me. I didnt know the answer to that date question either. Check to see if you can open either page.
@Forever proud & thisgirl97 - as far as I know the paperwork for the Tiger cruise has already been submitted. You may want to ask your sailor about it. Keep in mind that you won't be eligible for a tiger cruise if you are a boyfriend or girlfriend/Fiance(e)/wife or husband of a sailor.
I just received the paperwork for Tiger Cruise via email from my son. I do have questions though. He isn't sure what happens, but thinks the "cruisers" join the ship as it approaches Norfolk???
Does anyone know if there will be a group of Navy Mom's at the homecoming giving Free Hugs and Cookies to the sailors and marines when they get off the ship?
Ladies, Please don't post specific dates for any movements associated with the ship per OPSEC rules. Ombudsmen with the ship say all information for the Tiger cruise is supposed to come through sailors directly to their Tigers.
@BocaMom - Tiger Cruises are a chance for family and friends to get a first hand experience with Navy life. I can't paste the information currently, but do a search for "Navy Tiger Cruise" on this site. There is an FAQ for the Carl Vinson from 2012 that will give you a general idea of the rules and events.
If your sailor doesn't know, he needs to ask people.
Mikesmom my son was living on the ship when they returned from deployment. He had put in for PPV while they were at sea, but wasn't very hopeful since he was so new to the crew (he joined the deployment in June right out of A school). But he said he just made himself a PITA going into the housing office like every other day and finally got something about two weeks ago. What type of housing is your sailor hoping for?
forever proud, i guess just barracks. Somehow his paper work got lost and they told him it would be a 6-9 month wait an dthat he has to live on the barge. I told him just to go into the housing office everyday and bug them till they give him something. He is thinking that he might get an aparttment off base, but that me be costly. He just doesnt want to live on that barge for 6-9 months
Mikesmom tell him to keep going to the office. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, you know. If he hasn't done so yet, tell him to look into PPV. The one my son got is quite near the base (actually within 3 minutes) and is like a ginormous apartment building surrounded by smaller 6 unit buildings. His complex is all male single sailors. As sailors deploy I think they have to give up their housing, so when your son gets wind of a big ship deploying, that would be a good time to make a nuisance of himself!

My son is also on the USS Bataan and he says its cold also. He is usually a warm nature person.
