Hi Yasminie5! A few of us lurk around here, but i'm guessing there won't be a whole lot of activity right now with deployment done and the holidays and all.
My son is now home for leave and the house is a complete disaster. It feels wonderful!
Hello everyone my sailor just arrived at the USS Bataan last Friday. His rank is IT and so far all I can get is he is super cold up there and the air is stale on the ship lol. I'm happy to be a part of this new group and look forward to experiencing this with all of you.
Welcome lawdgo247! The ship is probably stale because my son and some other "crankers" forgot to clean the pulper when they got back from deployment in Oct LOL! as they have now gone to drydock, they will have an opportunity to settle in to life in Norfolk. He is just now getting a group to hang with and finding places to go for entertainment. It will take a few months. If your sailor is sociable, tell him to keep up with the Norfolk FB page as they post outings all the time like movie nights, bowling, ski trips, car shows etc.we're here for you any time!
Hello! Was suggested to join this group because my son is a MM on the USS Bataan...He has been on the ship for about a year now. My other boy is in Bootcamp right now. Two sailors...who would have thought I'd have two sailors!? Their father and I are both retired from the Army. I have to say, though the Army provided a good life for us, I am sure glad they decided to serve our country in the Navy.
Hi Joe&NatesMom! My son is MM as well, he's just been with Bataan since June. We were not a military family...until NOW! So proud and thankful I've been introduced to this way of life. This has completely opened my eyes to an entire segment of society that I really had no idea about.
Thank you Forever proud!! My son is on the floating barracks...he seems miserable so far lol. Hes a work out freak so I am guessing that is keeping him occupied. All I heard about today was moving printers off the ship and how many dang steep ladders he had to climb. He really needs a car...any suggestions on where to look up there. This would be his first car so he is a little lost on where to look and how to get there as he has no transportation.
Congrats Joe&Natesmom for two boys to be exceptionally be Navy proud of!!
Yes, I think they'd all say they are miserable! Seems to be the 'accepted' state of being. He likes his whine time with momma.
My son is a workout freak, too, and it seems to be a good outlet for all the testosterone poisoning going around lol.
As far as buying a car, i'm not sure the best way to go about it. I've seen some discussion on the Norfolk families page, suggesting things from parents skyping with their kids at dealerships to help the negotiations, having the sailor come home to buy a car locally with parental guidance, and parents going to Norfolk to help with the process.
There are A LOT of businesses that are more than happy to rip off young naive sailors, and the base command has a list of local businesses that they warn against and, in some cases, place a complete ban on Navy patronage. Check on the Norfolk FB page - I think they keep a running list of those places.
If I were you, I would post this same question on the Norfolk families group here on N4M and lots of more experienced locals will be happy to give suggestions.
Good luck!
Ok I am feeling much better tonight! My sailor texted and said he was very energetic and felt like his old self today, as he was at Corry station. He actually went to Chilis with some friends!! I am so happy for him, I am hoping he joins some people for the Superbowl on Sunday. After all, its the friends along the way that make the journey worth the while...Right!?!
Hello All --- My CS son is living on the Barge --- every time I talk to him --he seems sad --or maybe it just me missing him --- I don't hear that laughter in his voice I used to hear -- what i get is " Its a Job" Hes with the supply group --- I just home he makes friends and they can do things together to occupy their very little free time....
Thank you! ForeverProud & Lawdgo247. My son isn't floating anymore. He and his wife are in Sufolk, but I remember when he first arrived at Norfolk, he lived on the ship and it wasn't pleasant at all. I just can't imagine how they do it. He used to get together with a few guys on the weekend and they would get a hotel just to get off the ship.
My son, I'd looking at getting a apartment because he does not want to be on the barge. He said they are cold and the sleeping cots are very gross and dirty. He has been sleeping on friends couches. He is looking for a couple of roommates.
Yasminie5 it will take him some time to adjust, but as he makes friends it WILL get better. Just imagine yourself pulling up stakes, moving to a new city where you know no one and starting a new job. Once he gets into a routine and relaxes a bit, you will hear his old self come through again. When my son joined the Bataan, they were in the middle of deployment so I was unable to talk to him at all for long periods of time. Everytime he was able to call he sounded like he was about to cry. A few months later when I boarded the ship for tha Tiger Cruise back into Norfolk, there he was all his same old self. He is very quick witted and extremely funny, so it was so wonderful to see that humor again.
Granted he is still miserable, but he has friends and they can all be miserable together and go out and have lots of miserable fun! And they do!
Oh, SusanG I know you are so proud! I'm proud for him too!
Has he applied for base housing or PPV? I'd hate to see him have to pay for an apartment if there is a less expensive solution.
We live about 5 hours from Norfolk so after they returned from deployment, he came home a bought a car from a local dealer. I know how those dealers near military installations try and rip these young sailors off! It's a shame! They take advantage of their youth and desperation!
Not only do the sailors have to be aware of less than honest sales for cars, the repair shops are worse! And, what is so sad, most of the repair shops for cars are owned by retired military or active military. They are not honorable and don't guarantee their work. We got ripped off by one (we had lent my son my car) big time. Car has never been the same since. I think they did shoddy work and wanted to make sure my son would have to keep coming back. It was owned by a wife and husband (military).
Just noticed you are from New Hyde Park...My father and his family grew up on S 18th St! Just sold the "homestead" and moved to PA. still have family in Farmingdale & Floral Park
So true...taxes was the main reason for the move...I know he misses it, and we miss having the house to stay in when we visit NYC, but like you said, it's changed a lot.
My email is whodamom@verizon.net if you would like to communicate. I can take a photo of the old homestead for you. We shouldn't block up this posting with personal stuff. Stay in touch.

If it was a legitimate person they would post to the site, and why would they send me an email. BEWARE. Love to all.
Forever proud- Sorry, I just now saw your post. I don't think there are very many spouses in this group. I was referring to underways being extended and/or ship communication being cut off. And the pre-deployment craziness in general... All that fun stuff :p
Mamabear...from what I understand, there isn't a date set for the tiger cruise. There is a Facebook page for the families that your Sailor can get you into...Bataan FRG. It's a closed group, but like I said, your Sailor can get you into it...I find out a lot of what's going on by going to that Facebook page.
I just looked at the Facebook sight and there is now info about it, but because of OBSEC, I can't share what I read...my youngest son went last time...
Thank you. Super excited we finally know where he is being stationed. It'll be a few months I know and I know orders can change but I'm happy he will be fairly close to home and I have something I can do while he finishes up A school.
Welcome Mar3n1...My son has been on the Bataan for nearly 3 years. We like him being in Norfolk because, like you, he's fairly close to home. He seems to like it there. Lots to do around the area. They are out to sea right now so he's once again seeing the world on the Navy's dime!
Thank Joe&NateMom. His Grandparents were hoping for San Diego closer to them. When he called with his orders I was like YES! Closer to me yay! He will be done with schooling sometime in Oct.
Good Morning - I am wondering if anyone can give me a hotel recommendation for Norfolk. We are coming into see our sailor soon an I need to book a hotel room. Thanks!!
So my Son is home for his visit before he reports to Norfolk and his Ship. So excited to have him home for a few days even though I know he's excited to get down there and see his ship.
Mar3n1...Same for my daughter. She is an ABH. Once again we are heading into unknown territory though she is anxious to get back into the military lifestyle
paigec... My son is a MMFR and he says to me Mom quit over acheiving.. Because I keep looking stuff up. I told him I'm just trying to be ready for everything because I'm Proud. Truly I'm just anxious and nervous and its how I deal with it.
My daughter was instructed to email the USS Bataan to request a sponsor prior to arriving on base. We attempted to do this but the email is undeliverable for a variety of reasons. Anyone have any suggestions or experience in this area?
paigec - my son is with the Bataan. Not sure why the emails aren't working, but try reaching the Ombudsman Danielle Holt. I have messaged her to see how you can get in touch with her and/or the ship command. I'll let you know as soon as I hear back. Welcome aboard!
hey everyone! been FOREVER since I have been here. My son has now been with Bataan for almost 4 years. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to hit me up!
GO BATTLING BASTARDS OF BATAAN! Pit snipes - hooya!
Thanks Forever proud much appreciated. My son leaves tomorrow to report and I'm kind of an anxious mom he doesn't think to share much details. I usually have to go find stuff out for myself. I love that kid but if I waited on him I would still be sitting at the MEPS center.
Ok I spoke with the Ombudsman. She said for the new to Bataan folks to contact one of them to get oriented in the right direction. Email either of them at bataanombudsmankari@gmail.com or bataanombudsmandanielle@gmail.com
Forever proud...Thank you so much for checking on that and the great information!!! Not looking forward to my girl leaving again but i know she'll be in good hands.
