I'm so offended by the whole idea of this show. And that's unthinkable. Wouldn't it be something for local news to interview a Blue Star Moms group about this program.
BTW...had a great time watching the Olympics, sipping wine and hangin' with you and Marsha last night. I was laughing so much. I had recorded it and then rewound it to check out Jessie J' s leotard that she stole from you!
Nobel Peace Prize winners speak out against NBC's new show "Stars E... "(CBS/AP) Archbishop Desmond Tutu and several other Nobel laureates have protested in an open letter to NBC that the network's new reality competition series "Stars and Stripes" glorifies war and armed violence.
...The Nobel laureates also declared their support for a protest against the show scheduled to take place Monday afternoon outside NBC's Rockefeller Center headquarters in Manhattan."
ruthella....LOL! I like a good tequila myself. How about a Cadillac margarita?
The show is a new 'reality' show called "Stars Earn Stripes". Celebs get to play war...with real bullets. It is offensive to me but then I am not much for 'reality' shows.
Sorry - just feeling a little sorry about the state of TV today. I just watched an episode of Colombo that I had dvr'd. Good acting, good plot, a class act. Missing the old days.........
Marcy I so agree with you. I go back to the days of The Twilight Zone which had phenomenal writing by the great Rod Serling. I was a kid and it was black and white TV. Colombo was one of my faves as well. Currently I end up watching Leverage and Grimm 'cause they have clever dialogue, solid acting and they are both filmed in Portland.
I watched the show "Stars earn Stripes" last night. I thought they were trying to be very respectful of the military individuals that sacrifice for our country. And they're definitely trying to draw attention to the veteran/service related charities. This is good. As with most reality type series we see just snipets of the training and wayyy tooo many commercials...but I guess that's where they get the money for the charities! I understand the Nobel Peace Prize winners concerns as well since war definitely isn't entertainment.
This really pushed a button for me...especially in light of the casualties of the last 10 days. I keep thinking of HM2 Beauchamp and the others who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I think of my son at Camp P right now training. This is not entertainment. This is REAL LIFE. Combat may look like entertainment in the movies and such but that is fake blood. Those actors get up and get to go home. I do appreciate that it will benefit those charities but is it really worth it to glorify war and not glorify the alternatives...like diplomacy...like working together to find a solution. Okay...off the soapbox and back to work.
ruthella...thanks for sharing that. I think it is something I won't be tuning into. I have had a lot of respect for Gen Clark in the past and I understand the desire to support our young men and women however, I don't believe this is the best way to do it.
The beauty of this country is that we are all entitled to our opinions and we have the freedom to express them!
Hi Ruthella! Now, what's wrong with a couple diva's??? LOL, did you see that Special Force's guy's eyes light up when he was assigned one of the diva's??? :-) And both diva's did pretty well too!
Of course, what you say is true and us moms and dads with son's or daughter's who've been in harms way know this all too well!
LOL, heck, there was probably a line of folks at all the recruiting offices around the country today with youngun's looking to sign up and get an opportunity to work on tv with a diva in the future!!!!! :-)
ruthella...I am sitting here with tears in my eyes reading your post. You have perfectly and beautifully described what I am feeling and my son is still in FMTB at Camp P. I haven't heard from him but his girlfriend told me she had a chance for a quick conversation with him. He is passing all of his tests and feeling good about what he is doing. I remember he told me that passing was 80%. I know he is doing what he really wants to do. And I am filled with fear with my heart in my throat when I think about his goal which is to be deployed to take care of his Marines.
I have not been able to express this to anyone in my family or circle of friends because they don't have a clue. I think I am more worried about the toll it takes on the psyche of our Corpsman than anything else. I have lots of patients who are Viet Nam vets and I know how difficult life has been for them. I even had one who had a flash back when he was under oral sedation for periodontal surgery.
I am really offended that what our young men and women are going through is reduced to an entertaining reality program. Sorry to be such a downer. Think I need to have a glass of wine and look for that Brazilian booty video that Marcy posted to see if I can get into shape for the Rio Olympics in 2016!!
So I have a question. My son is 'out in the field' at Camp P, third week of training. I was looking over the student handbook and slides trying to figure out what that means. Can anyone tell me? When he was in boot camp, I was able to find a sort of day by day description of what he was doing depending on the day of the week. I found it comforting even though I couldn't talk with him. I guess I am just missing him. Better get used to it!
mikesmom...Wow...lots to see. Thank you again. It really helps. I have watched the videos posted here but the interviews on YouTube were really very meaningful. G'night from the Great NW.
Ruth VH thanks for the insight! Every little bit helps when it comes to getting an idea of what they are going through. My son will be stationed on the East side but I'm sure they do pretty much the same thing!
Life sometime is so unfair. Our son was almost home from the sandbox. Told us to stop the boxes because they would not make it to him before he was home. Then the Commander asked him to stay and train the new Battalion Coprsman coming in. He is getting to stay an extra two months for being the best Corpsman in the Battalion. What a gift. One that we could live without. He is not very happy right now. He has been getting alot of casualties this month as well and he is struggling with the sight of the children being brought to him to treat. He said he is having trouble dealing with children missing limbs. Pray for him to get through this and not be scarred.
Greg and Angela - I'm so sorry that he won't be coming home as planned. Great that he is the best Corpsman but like you said not exactly the gift you were hoping for right now. I will keep him in my prayers along with all the others there. I can only imagine how hard it is right now. My son is just starting A school training so I am sure I will be in your place someday. Thinking of you and your family.
Greg and Angela, definitely not the news that a parent wants to hear! My son dealt with similar situations with afghan children during his deployment last year while on patrol and after hours at the patrol base. As a corpsman, they never have time off! Keeping him in our thoughts and prayers!
RuthVH...thanks so much! I was looking at some of the YouTube videos Marsha had suggested. There was a slide show of one of the field marches and the horseplay reminded me of some pics I had seen of my son's camping trips with his friends...as in the little boy comes out!
Lots of canning it sounds like. I used to do that. Still make jams and jellies sometimes.
Greg and Angela...I am new to this group. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your son.
Katze...I think it is on NBC. If you have On Demand you can probably watch an episode that way.
Saw this on Zazzle while looking for Carol's Corpsman UP t-shirt..... BTW I only recently figured out that if you click on a photo in a Comment, it pops it full-screen!
Thank you all for your prayers, we have been blessed to see results from prayer and trust they will be answered again. Our son told me yesterday that we will not recognize him when he comes home. The long days in a small patrol base made him study and invent ways to get his Marines to exercise to stay mentally and physically fit. He was 6'3" and 180lbs soaking wet and he is now 6'4, 210lbs and he said he can bench press 330lbs. I am so happy he is keeping his mind and body busy so the time will go by quickly.
Marcy, That will be a real blessing, Thank you so much!. yes the address is the same.
My Corpsman Cub will be coming home soon. I have not seen him for a year. I can't hardly wait. I am going to cook up a storm soon with all his favorites, such as manicotti and spaghetti!
Blessing and prayers to Greg and Angela. Praying that your cub comes home soon safe and sound to you. I pray every time I go to mass, which is at least once a week sometimes more often, for our corpsmen.
Hi, new in this group but I do recognize some of the names., Marcy, Dramasoul, from San Antonio "A "school...... Well.,my Sailor is graduating "A" school next week and need help with how to send his things home( he'll be coming home before reporting to duty station). I figured I would ask here since all(most) of you have been through this.He has a 32 " flat screen tv, xbox besides all his books and stuff.
I guess my biggest concern is tv since I dont know whats around base and he has no car.
I will be going down for Graduation so he will have access to a car....any suggestions?
I know this is something he has to do but he isnt sure how to go about doing it. Any suggestions other than start packing up soon.
1proudmom....Hi! After our great chat about the car museum in Chicago, it's nice to see you here. I agree with kathy(audreysmema)...FedEx has boxes specifically designed for things like computers and tv's. Check with them. Also...if he is flying Southwest, they didn't charge my son for the FIVE PIECES OF LUGGAGE which included his seabag, a 20" weekender, clothing bag (so full of uniforms it was starting to split...love that duct tape), backpack AND his Martin guitar. He flew home in civvies but since he is military, they didn't charge for extra baggage or extra weight. I, on the other hand, had to pay for the extra weight of my suitcase (jeez those combat boots are heavy!!)
kathy...this is a lesson my son learned as he did reimburse me for the extra money it cost me to fly home with a lot of his stuff in my suitcase. I had suggested that he box stuff up and start sending it home two weeks BEFORE graduation. He didn't and he was really sorry. He learned his lesson. When he left for Camp P, he had only his seabag, clothing bag and backpack. The only thing I have sent him since is some of those Fox River Mills sox.
MDM4...my son is graduating oct 2 in san antonio...he says they have not been given any info on the graduation just yet...i have seen pics on the navy web site of the "auditorium" so to speak ( not sure what the build. is called) anyways, nice seats, stadium style...some have said the ceremony starts at 9:00...really have no other info at this time...i am in louisiana and we are going on monday...graduation on tues then coming back home on wed...i know this doesn't help much...hoping we get info soon! God Bless!
Hey all here is what I can tell you since my son just graduated on 8/22. First of all I think they do not set in stone the exact graduation date. The date school ends can be different then the graduation date. My son knew for sure about 2 weeks before. It is not as formal as Boot Camp graduation. They encourage you to get up walk around and take pictures. You do not need to be put on a list to go. It starts around 9 and last about an hour and a half depending on class size. My son graduated with the Air Force and Navy. First the Air Force went, their names announced in ABC order. Then the Navy went, same as Air Force announced in ABC order. After graduation they go to a de-briefing which lasted about an hour, which is when they get their plane ticket to their next base. If they need to change their ticket, they have to call the airline to change it and will have to pay the difference of the ticket. We live in NJ and he wanted to fly into Newark. He was told it would cost $300.00 to change the ticket. He told them he didn't want to spend that much so they told him he could fly into JFK for $42.00! Yep you guessed it, he flew into JFK. He will spend 9 days at home then be off to NC. I am driving him there to get some extra time with him. While at home he will work at the reruiting station for 5 days to earn back 5 of the leave days he used! Something to look into if your Sailor can do it. The recruitor needs 3 days notice if they want to do this. Sorry this is long and I hope it answered some of your questions. I was not there, my son told me how things went.
Katze...congrats on your Corpsman's graduation!! And it sounds like things are the same as they were for my son with the exception of Navy and AF graduating together. And singlelady...the graduation date is flexible although my son knew his about 2 weeks before. My son did to RAP duty (working at the recruiting station) and earned back his 5 days of leave. He actually enjoyed hanging out with his recruiter and some of the guys. I got a kick out of him getting up early to iron his NWU's and polish his boots on those days. The recruiter told him which uniform he would need to wear.
Katze...couldn't your son take the train from JFK to Newark? I have a friend who lives in Monmouth junction and we took the train to NYC all the time when I was visiting.
Drama thanks , so happy to have him home even if only for a few days. I think it's great they have RAP. He is hoping to be able to use those days for the holidays. He will actually finish up in NC the end of Dec just in time for Christmas. We only live maybe a half hour from JFK so the ride wasn't too bad. Newark is like 20 minutes from us and we have been there more often. I can't get over the price difference between the two!
