Hi,  My son has PIR 11/30 and then heads to Corpsman A school probably the following day.  Hopefully I can meet him at the airport to give him his phone and computer. What else?  Can he have some clothes and his good running shoes?

    Thanks for any help.

  • DramaSoul

Katze, you took the words right out of my mouth. Velcrokrispy, I would definitely wait to send him things. My son also lost a lot of weight and ended up needing to get new clothes. Also..I got the wait with my son at the airport (he had a 12 hour wait). They are very generous about getting parents passes to wait at the gate. The airlines are supportive so all you need to do to get a pass is meet your Sailor at the reservation desk and have him verify that you are related. We had time enough to have a meal and visit with his buddies and their families. My son took his phone but didn't have room for his computer. I sent that to him via FedEx in one of their special computer packs. It arrived safe and sound.

How sappy am I? Tears still well when think back to the boot camp, PIR, airport days! But you can't wipe the grin off my face since he's been able to call, Skype, and visit! Maybe not as much as I would like but it's no boot camp! Lol
  • IDCmom#1

Recently my son deployed and sent a small box home.  Brought back memories of the box that came home from basic training.  Nine years later, tears still well!   Seeing the loose dogtag in the box was really a heart gripper.

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

I hear you on that one Doc. We had dog tags made up for our sons going away party. Some how one ended up on the bulletin board at work and now no one wants to take it down ! They are keeping it up for luck!
  • DramaSoul

Katze and docsmom...I am just as sappy! OMG, just reading some of these posts and I am a puddle.

  • mikes mom

Wow, we sure do have a lot of new moms here in our precious group !

    Hello to you all !

My anniversary is around this time and I have to say it was one very happy day for me when I ( Opps, ) when Melissa found you all for her mommy that was driving her crazy...LOL 3 years have gone by so fast and I truly hope that all of you new parents find what I found here : )

  • velcrokrispy (Ship 12 Div 029)

Thank you all very much for the info and great advice.  Glad I found this group so much to learn!

  • Diana2222

Great reading everyones stories.  I haven't been on the sight for a bit as I work way too much and being an insurance adjuster it's going to get crazy.  I love reading the stories and hearing the exictment and concerns of the new mom's.  My son was in Cali for about six months and it was great having him so close.  He left the 1st of the month for Jacksonville Florida (his new home).  So excited for him and his wife - they bought their first home.  Good luck to all and my prayers are with any of you affected by Sandy.  If anyone has an insurance question feel free to email me and I will try to explain things for you.

anyone have a sailor in class 010

  • dianevdb

    My sailor is in 225A!

  • Huggy

what do the letters stand for. Seen them on graduation dates.

  • dianevdb

    hi

All I know is the group of the class 225. He's in A and others are in B. The C is the Air Force for their graduation class.

  • DramaSoul

Huggy...are you asking about the letters I used? PIR = Pass In Review which is the boot camp graduation, FMTB = Field Medical Training Battalion which is the field medical training that is done at the Marine bases Camp Pendleton (West) and Camp Lejeune (East).  If a Corpsman is going to work with Marines, they got through field medical training.  Welcome to the Wonderful World of Navy Acronyms!!!!

  • DramaSoul

dianevdb...so is your son graduating? Congrats to all the upcoming graduates!

  • queennavymama

I do .. My son is in that class 010
  • dianevdb

Drama, yes, !2/6. But he has been told that his Dental classes begin that same day! So, he will receive a certificate and his uniforms have the medical Hospital Corps sign. We will go to San Antonio in Feb or March 2013 when he graduates from Dental.

  • DramaSoul

dianevdb...How exciting! Glad to hear he got his wish for Dental.  As one who has had a long career in it, I think it's a great choice!!!!!

  • dianevdb

Drama, I had a dumb typo!

He is looking forward to the Dental Assist classes! Then dreaming of the Dental Lab Tech.

  • DramaSoul

Looking forward to having two HNs eat Thanksgiving dinner with us.  Have absolutely no idea who they are other than they have their own transportation to get to our home.  Good thing our daughter and her boyfriend will be eating with us so the young HNs don't feel like they are just hanging out with old folk!

Sure wish my son was not so far away from home this Holiday Season but am thankful we have his four year old daughter with us.  She lifts our spirits.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Docsmom, that is so great!  My corpsman spent his first T'day away from home with a Navy mom and her family in Virginia, thanks to our connecting on Navyformoms.  Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving, and thank you :)

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Yeah Docsmom! Boo for my Sailor who is stuck in NC for Thanksgiving. :-( yeah that he will be doing something nice by covering someone's watch so they can be with their family! Boo I won't get my fix of helping a Sailor this Thanksgiving! But there is always next year or maybe Christmas!
  • Huggy

Just ordered a Thanksgivng turkey dinner to eat at motel with sailor, and hopefully couple adopted ones. Was suppose to be so hopefully there still will be. Enough turkey for 8 people.

  • velvetlace

My son is a HN living in Jacksonville, FL.   This will be the second Thanksgiving that he has not been home for Thanksgiving.   It makes me sad, but we live in Northern California, so it is too far away for us to go to JAX.   He told me that there are some families that will take him in and feed him.  Blessings to those families who take care of our sailors during Thanksgiving when our sailors are far away from home.   Thank you!

    Mary

  • Diana2222

Mary - I'm feeling the sadness too.  My son is also in Jacksonville, FL and I'm in Southern CA.  His wife is with me while they are waiting for their house to close escrow (if ever - what a mess) and will also be away from him this Thanksgiving.  He too is blessed that there are families sharing their Thanksgiving with him.  Thank you to everyone who has opened their homes.

  • cjmue12

Any of you experienced mom and dads...my sons birthday is first week of Decmebr while he is in San Antonio. Any suggestions on a useful/fun/allowed gift? I am told things take 3 weeks to get to the sailor so want to get something out fast! Thanks so much!

  • Huggy

cimue12 it can take a while for them to get packages. Good luck, don't know if ups or fedex be any better

  • DramaSoul

It's the mail room.  They don't always get out of class in time to pick things up.  I overnighted some food in a cooler for my son during Passover and I went with FedEx.  He picked it up the next afternoon.

  • dianevdb

Huggy, do you have a full guest list at this point? My son is there for Turkey day and looks like he has watch on Friday.

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Enjoy!

  • Huggy

dianevbd I just got on here, since last night. I don't know who all my son asked, but one said yes. Hope it is yours, Will try and ask in the morning if anyone else was needing dinner.

  • dianevdb

    dear Huggy,

You are so kind! thank you for all of your thoughtfulness!

    I will PM.

  • Huggy

diana my son does not know your son I told him about it when he got to motel, would have called but didn't have number. Sorry didn't get to meet up with him.

  • dianevdb

Dear Huggy, THANK YOU so much for the college try to get in touch. It means allot to me that someone in Texas cares so much! He was at Fralish and needed to pull watch today, so couldnt party it up, or go too far.

I hope you had a wonderful visit with your son and you are continuing to enjoy your weekend with him in the SA area. The very best to you and your family this Holiday Season! Cheers, Diane

  • dianevdb

Huggy, Thanks so much for all of your efforts! We hope you had a wonderful time with your son! Take care.

  • DramaSoul

kathy(audreysmema)...I had quite the 'discussion' with US Airways going all the way to a supervisor.  They waived the penalty as 'a one time favor'.  I will never fly them again.

  • wellen(ship04/DIV818 PIR 9/1)

Hi Folks, My son is actually going thru SOCM in Fayetteville...some what the same.  hope you don't mind me lurking to learn what I can about this next step.  Thanks.

  • Proudmom

Hi, I was wondering if there is a page for those who are deploying soon :(. My son is suppossed to leave within the next week. I would really appreciate any help or info. that might help me get a grip with his deployment. Thanks!

  • vettespace

    Proudmom,
This is one group: Anyone with Sailors/Soldiers/Marines in Iraq & Afghanistan

But, we've also got quite a few moms and a few dads here in this group very experienced with our family members deployments so don't be afraid to ask questions and seek support! My cub deployed to Helmand with a Marine Unit in 2011 and is heading back again early next year with another Marine Unit!
