Hello Princess! Yes, he's headed back to the sand pit in the Spring! So we get to do this deployment thing all over again. Definitely looking forward to him heading to college after all this is over! How's life on the west coast?
Hi Kathy, he's at Camp Lejeune. He'll be in 29 Palms before deployment for ITX training (former Enhanced Mojave Viper) then off to visit scenic Helmand! LOL Feel free to ask any questions. If it's opsec related you may wish to pm me.
Hey all! I have been a lurker here for awhile. Just had a quick question for all of you. Hopefully someone will know the answer to this question. Not too sure I really wanna know the answer but it has been bugging me ever since my son told me. He is attached to a Marine unit and is getting ready to deploy soon. He said that they are gonna be "Leathernecks" also. His unit is an artilary unit. What does he mean by leathernecks? I feel dumb asking this question but I have absolutely no clue what he means and I don't wanna ask him and then freak out about it while I am talking with him. Thanks for helping.
Thanks all. If you can't tell it is his first deployment. I'm a little nervous about him going but yet at the same time I am proud of him. Not thrilled that he will be with his Marines but it is what he chose to do. Makes me a proud momma when he gushes about what he is learning and how things are going for him. Just feel like I am behind in terminology here. LOL I thought that I was doing good getting the whole Navy terminology down and now I am learning Marine terminology on top of that. Kinda confusing at times. Glad to know I can come here and ask away and sound half way intelligent when I talk to him.
Two Thumbs up Carol congratulations on your son's nuptials. That is an awesome picture and your new daughter-in-law is very beautiful! Best wishes to the new couple!!!
Hi there medic mom! My cub is at Camp Lejeune getting ready for his 2nd deployment. Where's your Corpsman located? Feel free to ask away and we'll have your Corpsman wondering where you're getting all that info....LOL
Thanks vettespace. My cub is at Camp Pendelton. He's been there since January. He is loving being a greenside corpsman. I cannot believe how happy he is doing his job. He is always amazed that I know as much as I know when I tell him things. He just laughs and then says "Those dang NavyMoms that you know." I always end up laughing. He knows where I get my info. He loves that I stay informed. Makes things easier on us. I am just anxiously awaiting his arrival home some time this month. He won't tell me when he will be arriving since he is driving home. He wants to surprise me and get me to cry for him. Goofy kid.
Carol what a beautiful picture! Mazel tov (good luck) as we say in my family. I am probably the only one old enough here to remember watching (on TV) a movie called "The Flying Leathernecks". They've got lotsa names for Marines. Devil Dog is another that someone here told me had to do with the fact that the Germans in WWI called the Marines 'devil dogs' thinking they were insulting them. NOT SO! LOL!!
Just want to do a little bragging. Of course, I am incredibly proud of my IDC son but, right now, we are celebrating that his baby sister has passed the NCLEX and is now a registered nurse. Now, to find a job! I never thought my children would end up in the medical field. My daughter has a BA in elementary education and I thought she would make a wonderful teacher. Surprise! Chose to go to nursing school a year later. My son never showed interest in medicine until he joined the Navy. I am so glad they both found something they truly love and can support each other in their careers.
Maybe they will look after Mom and Dad in their old age?
Lori, that's a great assignment! Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is a phenomenal hospital. Tell J to look at "The Myrtles at Olde Towne" (the brick 3-story, NOT the highrise) just outside the entrance for a good place to live - luxury apartments with A+ amenities. Sending you a PM :)
I am not on her much these days, but N3M was a great support when my son left for boot camp last year. I got through that time and the folowing year ok, but know the time came that I dreaded, My son left for what we are hopng will be a 6 month deployment. I am not sure though, I think it will be longer, but I hope not.
I am fortunate though, I have 3 other wonderful cjildrfen husband and great family and friends, and the best part is my 1st grand baby due in Feb.! But I have a sadness inside that stays with me always these days I am staying busy as I know it is important, but miss my son terribly.
Thank you so much for the words of encouragement! I The fact that it is our first Christmas apart is going to be tough! But I am focusing on my many blessings though, staying busy, and trying to help others who need it!
It's a miracle anyone could decipher my mispelled words!
OmahaRudy, congrats on his progress! Time is flying by. I don't know anyone offhand who has been at Parris Island. I just started a Discussion in the A school group for folks to share what they know about C schools and first duty stations, so be sure and post your info there - you're becoming one of us "seasoned" ones now! ;)
Hi everyone......merry christmas to you all! Love you and miss you, hope everyone is well. Bug is doing great in Texas, wanted me to say hi! We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! Hugs to you all! I am at my folks so I wantrd to jump on here real quick.....
Merry Christmas to all of you! I am glad that we are friends, and I look forward to 2013. This is my second Christmas without my sailor/corpsman son, but hopefully next year will bring a new assignment closer to home. There is always that hope! God bless all of you! Mary
It is hard not having them home for Christmas. I was lucky enough to talk to him on the phone today, and he promised to call tomorrow. Mine is on the other side of the USA from me, so it is too far for me to travel for one day. Besides, I have commitments at church to sing and play. However, if my son was somewhere closer, I would drive there to be with him even for Christmas Day. Oh well, there is always next year to dream about having him home so that I can cook for him. Yes, may all of our sailors be safe this holiday, and may the war end in Afghanistan soon. Love and peace-Mary
My poor son thought he was supposed to be at someone's house for Christmas dinner, however it was Christmas Eve! So he ate a MRE for Christmas. He is so homesick. I hope that this is the last Christmas of MREs.
My sailor returned to 'A' school yesterday. He graduates soon and then on to FMTB! Barring a cataclysm, I'll attend the graduation ceremony in Ft. Sam. We had a nice holiday, visited grandparents. He visited his dad's family, his old school friends and had a nice time. It was hysterically amazing for me to watch him FOLD HIS CLOTHES.
Granny....my moment came when my Sailor was home on leave last Summer and doing RAP duty. I came downstairs and he was IRONING HIS NWU'S USING SPRAY STARCH TO KEEP THE COLLAR FLAT. This was after he had shined his boots!!! The other day he said that he thinks the reason he doesn't get sick anymore has to do with fact that his bathroom and room are really clean...no dirty clothes piled in the corner! Ya think??? LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!
MIne learned how to iron shirts in bootcamp prior to NWUs, so funny to hear about them ironing at 2 am!
Speaking of NWUs, what do you all think of the report that the NWUs are "extremely flammable"? "Under the textile flame resistance test, the uniform cloth was subjected to a flame for 12 seconds. Marine and Army uniforms made of rayon, para-aramid and nylon fibers were also tested, but only the Navy uniforms melted and were consumed by the flame, according to a report on the tests."
Marcy...my son told after his FMTB graduation that the Navy was going to a different NWU. He called them 'pickles' because the design sort of looked like pickles and were more green than blue. Are pickles less flammable?
Marcy, I notice he was ironing with a setting for synthetics so it wasn't as hot as for cotton. He was told that's how they had to do it. He said in the hospital if he is doing clinical treatment they wear scrubs otherwise it's NWU's and not marpats. He said once a week they wear peanut butters. I had to check what that was at first!!! I think he looks good in that service uniform but he said it isn't comfortable with all the stays!!
