Marcy, thankd for posting this. I remember when this happened as he is from not far from where I live. I saw his picture on the wall of fallen Corpsman at Anderson Hall when I was there in July 2012 at my son's graduation. Chokes me up just thinking about it. Love that the dogs name is Ryley.
soon all of your sons will be sailors :) Then off to Fort Sam to begin classes to become Corpsman ... Let's remember they have to get through this hurdle first and then the next before you can call them Corpsman. . I don't mean to be disrespecting anyone here.. It's hard work and your children have only just begun.
Thank you
My son will graduate on October 16 from a school, then he is off to portsmouth, va. Super excited for him, but sad to see him go so far. It's been nice only being an hour away. Anyone have info on there he is headed
Fogger - Marcy I'm sure will have a lot to say about Port smith : )
Congratulations !
My children use to be all on the east coast and now (thank goodness) they are all on the West Coast : ) only 2 hours by plane. .
Frogger1, that's great!! Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is an outstanding hospital, not to mention the oldest continuously operating hospital in the Navy (the original building, which is beautiful, is now administration). Your son will have a million-dollar view of the Elizabeth River and downtown Norfolk from his barracks. A barracks suite consists of two bedrooms, each with a private entrance, that share a kitchen and bath. The kitchen has a microwave, a small refrigerator, and a fold-down ironing board. It's about a minute walk to the hospital. If he doesn't have one yet, he will definitely need a car there. There is so much to do in the Portsmouth/Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, and about a three hour drive up to D.C. He can also walk to the ferry landing in Portsmouth and take the $1.50 across the river to Norfolk's Waterside area and McArthur Mall for shopping, restaurants and movies.
OK Frogger1, two more things and that's it I promise!! LOL This link: NMCPortsmouth on Facebook; and they have an awesome smartphone app. Use your barcode scanner app to scan this and get it on the Google Play Store:
My son's second Navy assignment was NMC Portsmouth. He was married to another sailor then and they lived in a fairly decent apartment very near the hospital. It has been so long, I can't remember to what clinic he was assigned.
If you are into history, what a great place to be stationed. I would love to spend an extended vacation there roaming streets and visiting historic sites.
My first grandchild was born at NMC Portsmouth and the labor and delivery section was very good. I am assuming my next grandchild will be born there as well as my son will PCS from Camp Pendleton to Virginia Beach this Fall and baby arrives in April.
While still quite a drive from Pensacola, VA is so much nearer than CA. I am getting excited!
My son is now officially separated from the Navy. He is on his way to the University of Kentucky to become a physician's assistant! The Navy was an incredible experience for him, and me. He says he has mixed feelings about leaving but it was time. Fair winds and following seas to all the heroes still serving!
John ,
What a journey we've been on ! Wow, please let Dan know we are all on his side he can do this : )
My son is still in and has another year to go.. My daughter though is now out of the Army. .thank goodness. .
Aw John, gonna miss you! BUT - I hope you'll keep an eye on our group when members have questions and add your knowledge - all that experience is valuable!!! Please give Dan best wishes for his continued success. Someday when a good-looking PA is taking my BP I'm going to ask, does your dad have a boat and is his name John? ;)
I just saw this from Fleet and Family Support. Now that we're used to the nine digit zip code, here comes a change!
The Navy is changing mailing addresses for ships, afloat units, and ashore FPOs to improve service, reduce costs and get mail to service members more efficiently. Here's what you need to know -
1. No more nine digit zip codes
The new Navy Standardized Addressing format only requires the use of a five-digit zip code, more like standard mail. The USPS process will automatically generate a barcode with any additional digits that are required for delivery. This change will eliminate undeliverable as addressed (UAA) mail currently being returned to sender.
2. New virtual boxes
A new four digit virtual box number will be added to the standard addressing format. This number will be unique to each service member and will aid in getting your mail to you and not someone else.
3. Faster delivery!
With the new format, the Postal Service is anticipating reducing transit time by 7 to 21 days for letter mail and publications. That makes it more likely that you'll receive the August issue of Sports Illustrated in the mail before Thanksgiving!
4. Less Expensive
The new Navy Standardized Addressing format is expected to save Navy postal operators $1.2 million annually in labor and transportation costs.
For anyone with a sailor at A School in San Antonio, the USO and the restaurant Boudro's on the River Walk are hosting a Thanksgiving Day meal event FREE to all active duty troops, retirees and their families to celebrate the holiday. When and where: Thursday November 27th, 11 am to 3 pm at "Charles Court" located at 205 North Presa between Commerce and Market Street.
If your sailor takes a cab from Ft Sam Houston, they can stop into the USO Center (open 11am-4pm tomorrow) a few steps from the event and receive a $5 voucher towards cab fare back to base.
My son graduates Corpsman school tomorrow then he is flying to North Carolina for FBMT he is not suppose to start until January but because he is reserve he has to go there and check in then go on leave . Reserve can not go on leave in between duty stations that's why he has to check in first. I'm upset by this we live less than 2 hours from Fort Sam in San Antonio we have been checking flights for him to come back home for leave and Christmas it about a 1000 for a flight because it will be close to Christmas. Does anyone had a sailor there right before the holidays? I have checked prices on priceline the flights went down to about 800 Any help would be great
The Jacksonville NC airport is small; only US Air and Delta fly there and many of the days around the holiday are completely sold out.
If your son is able to rent a car, he could drive the 2+ hours to Raleigh-Durham airport. You can try the Southwest Airlines website, they fly between Raleigh-Durham and San Antonio. Most of the cheap flights are gone, but you may get lucky.
In re car rental: if your son is under 25, he can get the 25 and under surcharge waived if he banks with USAA and books by clicking through their Travel Services car rental link. There is an Enterprise car rental office on base at Camp Lejeune.

Thank you for posting this article is not true Marcy . I was very upset when I saw this article thinking it was true and I shared it with my corpsman right away . Then I found out it was not true from other Navy sites
Concerned Navy Mom my son he is in training at FMBT East. He hurt his back Friday he sounds tired and ran down and sound like he was down. He said he should be okay. He has been there for along time was on hold before he classed up there . It sounds very physical the training he is going through to become a battlefield corpsman. He is reserve but plans on taking active duty assignments when he is done . I gave him a lot of encouragement yesterday and it seem to help. I just wanted to share how I felt . I didn't feel I could share it on any of my corpsman Facebook sites because belongs to the groups also
Michelle I'm so sorry you and your son are going through this right now! My son was sick much of the time he has been in the military and depression comes with it. Sometimes I feel like I can't help him at all. I pray for him continually. He is much better now as he isn't working directly with sick people in a hospital. He seemed to catch everything possible in that environment. I'll pray for healing both for his back and emotions! Hang in there and keep encouraging him and loving him like we mom's do. Thanks for posting! I'm sure other moms can relate too!
Michelle, if you want to send him something to cheer him up, you can buy a gift card for Dunkin Donuts online and have it sent directly to him via email, or to his phone. The Dunkin Donuts is in the parking lot of the Marine Corps Exchange at Camp Lejeune (believe me, they all know where it is) and he can get coffee and doughnuts or Baskin Robbins ice cream. Sending to his phone via text would be more convenient than email so he doesn't have to print anything. You just have to download the app to your phone first, then you can "gift" him via text. Just a thought! http://www.dunkindonuts.com/content/dunkindonuts/en/mlanding.html
Thank you ladies . Marcy I clicked on the the info you gave about a gift text . I just directed me to a picture. Is it Dunkin Donut app? Thank you for your help great idea. Please let me know where to find the app

Hi all. Got a few questions. Our son is a Corpsman stationed at 29 Palms. He has herniated a disc in his back and scheduled for back surgery in San Diego coming up in Early April. Naturally I want to go and be there with him for surgery. The he tells us that the doc wants him to stay in San Diego for 5 days post op. After that mandatroy 30 day convalescent leave in which he is planning on coming home to Oregon for that. That said, my husband and I are trying to coordinate our arrival and staying in San Diego and then be available to fly back to Oregon with him so he is not carrying luggage etc. Are any of you familiar with San Diego base and the hospital setting? Any suggestions on cheap places to stay? Thanks for any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Hi 3athlete! So sorry to hear about his back injury. As his parents, you are eligible to stay at the Navy Lodge, and the one nearest the hospital is on 32nd Street by the commissary. The phone number is 619-234-6142, and their rates range from $68 per night up to $125 for a suite. You have to provide his name, rate, rating and relationship to you when you make the reservation, and he has to be with you to show his military ID when you check in. Their rates are usually the best around, accommodations are nice and you'll be in a safe area too. Sending good thoughts for his speedy recovery and that he's pain-free and running around very soon!

CARYN: Well my son is still in A school he just got is orders to Japan, I hear nothing but good things about Japan where is your son going ? Add me as a friend if you like
Hootsmom: my son is not in that group but he's been in San Antonio for 2 months now and has 2 months to go. He has a lot more freedom, he's now phase 3 which means he can leave base over night. He Inuit received orders to Japan which was number1 on his dream sheet. But you have to score really high in A school to get to go to Japan and Hawaii they are the most sought after places to go. I'm proud of him and all the kids. One of his friends from boot camp that is now in A school is reporting to Italy. How great is that wow.
Single lady; Awwwww I know how you feel my son just got orders to go to Japan and I'm happy for him that's where he water to go. I know you miss him but just be happy... (HUGS))). He'll be just fine. I don't talk to my son much now and he's in A school in San Antonio but I have to let him go. Can he get leave from Japan to fly home for a few days or can you fly there. They still get leave right? Whinin those 2 years are you able to see him? What about holidays.
My son had PIR 05/01 and headed to San Antonio for A School. They are set to graduate 08/18, originally 08/20. Anyone else here with that group? My son got his "soft" orders on Friday. He got his dream sheet location of Rota, Spain. Told me his friend got Italy. Drew7062, are we talking about the same young man?
BOBBIEH: I don't know the sailors name and if I did I wouldn't mention it here. Gotta be careful of mentioning sailors names :-( but my sailor is going to Yokosoka Japan I'm excited for him
Drew7062 I get no names here. Just thought if they were all in the same class, it's most likely the same young man. My Sailor said he is the only one who is going to Rota and I think his friend is the only one going to Italy. My husband was in Okinawa for a short tour. He said Japan was awesome!
Any moms/dads here that have Sailors who went to Spain? I've read the list of pre-checklist of things for them to do to prepare and it's a lot!! Any advice would be appreciated.
Our son graduated on 6/19 and is in Ft Sam Houston, too. He just called and said they had a heck of a time getting to A School. Guess they made the plane, but the train taking them to their connecting flight broke down, so they had to bus it to San Antonio where a car picked them and took them to base. Talk about planes, trains, and automobiles! Lol Glad they made it safely, though. Happy to meet you. :)

Well, a corpsman did it again! HM1 Jessica Wentlent of Naval Medical Center San Diego has won 2015 U.S. Navy Shore Sailor of the Year. She received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal at the ceremony and will be meritoriously advanced to chief petty officer (CPO) later this year.
