For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
glad it was a well planned mission and no U S casualties. we never give up and the son it like the cherry on top told my husband i'd shoot a shot gun in the air like they do to celebrate
The navy lodge hotel is nice and very close to base. cost depends on rank. but very nice with a kitchen and pots and pans. I have stayed there a few times.
Michelle (AO MOM) just google hotels near Norfolk base and that should pop some up. As for the Navy lodge Your sailor will have to check in within 24 hours after you check in with his military ID. But they are very reasonable if you explain to them why you are coming they start booking 60 days in advance so i would suggest you do it soon if you are going to stay there because they do fill fast during homecomings.
The carriers are at the base, just a stone's throw from the Navy Lodge. Virginia Beach is nearby but the rates at the beachfront hotels really go up in the summertime. The Marriott and the Sheraton at Norfolk's downtown Waterside are also very nice. As for events while you're there, check the links here Things to do in Norfolk
Found one more thing - interesting! MWR list of camping, cabins & RV parks for the USA, alphabetical by state, with Italy and Japan too; scroll down to Virginia (seven locations). http://www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/cabin.htm
Karen J...Sounds like you are having a blast and enjoying your Sailor. Just be carefule about listing dates for movements of ships and posting pics with your Sailors name if it has his last name. Safety for our Sailors is top priority especially now. This is a public website and we never know who is reading and watching. Best to your Sailor!
Looking for help from some of my Navy Moms that might live in the Raleigh, NC area. Troy Yocum an Iraqi veteran is walking 7000 miles across the U.S. to raise money for Military Families and Veterans that need help. He has been on his hike for a year now. He will be coming to Raleigh, NC this weekend banging his drum! Thursday night he will be at the Durham Bulls game. Friday he will walk into Raleigh to meet with folks from the Mayor's office and the Governor's office. Saturday is a huge fund raising day and this is where I need HELP!! We are going to have an active duty member from the Army, Navy, Marines and AirForce standing in Attention to see who can do it the longest. They will be at Center Court at Triangle Town Center. I need help to collect money at Triangle Town Center. We are also still looking for someone from the Air Force to participate. If you know someone in the AirForce that might be interested, please let me know. We would love to have a female!! Please go to www.Drumhike.com to learn more about Troy and what he is doing for our military families! Thanks!
@Karen J, have a great time tomorrow and take plenty of pics!! The local TV stations will be covering it, maybe you'll be one of their interviewees, why not? :)
Karen...I know you are so proud of your Sailor and will miss him so much!! Glad you were able to spend some wonderful time with him before he left! My Son is an MA stationed waterside at Norfolk so I am very lucky that he doesn't go out right now. Of course that may change with his next Duty Station in a year. Anyway, I hang in there and remember your N4M Sisters are here for you! I have a kid that is sort of an adopted son or surrogate son that's in the Air Force and he left last month for Afghanistan. I'm able to skype with him about once a week and we are able to email but I do miss him so much! Our Guys really are special for what they do and the sacrifices they make!!! Anyway, thoughts and prayers to your Sailor for a safe return.
Hello all. I'm new to this site. I'm hoping that someone here can help me (my son really). He was stationed to Norfolk in January, went on a short deployment and is back in port. His ship is in the yards right now having work done so he's currently living in the yards. He is getting terribly bored and I think a little depressed right now because he doesn't have any friends. He is a very personable kid but he doesn't drink and he said that's all everyone does there on their free time. I've suggested that he speak with clergy or counselors but of course he doesn't think he needs to. I also suggested he look for volunteer opportunities but he said there aren't any. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what he can do in the area on his off time. I can't believe he's the only one around that doesn't drink and hang out in bars but I think because he's down he's not seeing any opportunities available to him. I'm getting a little worried about him but of course as his mom I'm a little sensitive to his feelings. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Oh, my name is Marie. Thanks.
Hi Marie, I don't know if you remember me from PIR. My son is stationed in Norfolk also. Right now he is on deployment for 9 months. His ship is the USS Bataan.
Wish he was here to help your son, I know he would. Maybe down the road they will meet.
Curtis doesn't know anything about Norfolk yet. He arrived there in March and a couple days later was told he was going on deployment for 9 months. So he was there a week then drove his car home and flew back to Norfolk. Left on deployment after that.
I'm sure there is someone on here that can help you out.
Keke's mom there is a lot of volunteering he could get involved in he can go on base and ask, or even if he doesnt want to do it there the SPCA is always looking for volunteers to help with the animals and they work around the schedule you give them all they ask is that the person takes a orinetation class before beginning, the Aquarium and zoo also have volunteer positions avaliable year round. If those dont work he can always goog volunteer work in the area and it should pop some stuff up. Hope this helps a little and no not everyone drinks and goes to the bar on their free time.
Marie (Keke's mom), not to worry, my son doesn't drink, and there are lots like him. Here are some thoughts:
On Norfolk Naval Base at the corner of Gilbert and Bacon Streets (close to gate 2 I think), there is a great recreational place for our sailors called the Wind and Surf Recreation Center. I saw it on my last visit and it's really nice, I was so impressed (I took a pic, below), with billiards, a theater room with 800+ movies, etc etc. The Rec Center is attached to the Wind and Surf Internet Cafe, which has a Starbucks, lots of flat screen TVs and seating.
Wind & Surf Internet Café Location: Building C-9, 9475 Bacon Avenue Phone: (757) 444-2888 Hours of operation: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight; Saturday, noon to midnight; Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.
Wind & Sea Recreation Center Location:Building C-9, first deck, 9475 Bacon Avenue Phone: (757) 444-4033 Hours of operation: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight; Saturday, noon to midnight. and Sunday, noon to 11 p.m. Amenities: Wi Fi internet Snack Bar Quarterly theme/holiday parties Liberty trip sign up Pool tables Ping Pong table Individual TV viewing area PS2, PS3, Xbox, & Xbox360, Wii with a large game library UFC & WWE pay per view events Large theater room with 800+ titles from Navy Motion Picture service Regular tournaments including Texas Hold 'em gaming systems
Another idea is to have your son check out the Single Sailor Programs offered by MWR, website:
They offer lots of activities, and can be a good way see the area and meet people.
It's baseball season, and Norfolk has a AAA baseball team called the Tides that is the farm team for the Baltimore Orioles (pretty cool), and the park is great, set right on the Elizabeth River. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t568
Hope this helps give him some options! :) By the way, if your sailor doesn't have a car, perhaps the family can help him out because it's pretty much essential there.
by the way, I asked the hostess there if the place gets busy (it was mid-morning) and she laughed and essentially said, are you kidding, the place fills up!!
I was glad to hear it :)
Michelle: My husband and I just moved into an apartment up here, and a bunch of guys on ship have apartments as well, so let me know if you need any recommendations.
Marie: I know that on base there is a place known as the "single sailor" where the guys can go and use the computer, play games, and just let loose. My husband used to go there before we started dating to meet friends and hang out with the other guys in a social, alcohol free setting. My husband isn't a huge drinker either, and he always liked going to the one in Mayport to just hang out. What ship is your son on? Maybe I can get my husband to connect with him. He's a second class, and has been in for four and a half years, and he likes to take new people under his wing and show them the ropes. We just had some new guys from his new ship over last night. It was fun.
jess, you guys sound like my parents growing up, and now me. dad was in the air force and was always bringing home the single guys for home cooked meals, holidays etc. he said he always remembers being stationed in washington state (he was born and raised in north carolina) and he would ride the bus to neighborhoods and just walk around thinking about how he missed his family and would make up stories about what was going on in the houses.
i've left posts on here, and i'm putting it out there again, i live 2 hours south of norfolk, on the outer banks in nc, and anyone that needs a get away or anybody has anyone out here that just needs some "family" time away from "navy life" just give a yell!
Haha that's exactly what we try to do! It wasn't too long ago that my husband was a single sailor with no family in the area, had no way to get around, and was stuck sleeping on the ship. Which is why he now tries to reach out to the new guys.
Keke's mom, my son grew up in a small town and didn't drink like teenagers sometimes do, and now that he is old enough to drink he isn't a bigger drinker either. I know that he goes to the internet cafe & rec center and always talks like he really enjoys it. I also worry about my son because he doesn't have a car, and we are so far away, but there are so many great men & women who are great about helping out.
Hey yall! Just checking in with everybody and seeing how things are going. My boyfriend just left for deployment on wednesday so I thought I would get re-connected to navy moms again :) Hope yall have a great Sunday :)
Wow, thank you all for these great suggestions. I'll be sure to let my son know that there are options out there for him. Jess, he is serving on the USS Laboon. Not going on deployment until next year so he's going to have plenty of time in Norfolk. He does have a car so he can get around. CK's mom, of course I remember you, can't forget our boot camp moms!! Thanks ladies, this web site has been a life saver for me this past year, don't know what I'd do without all you great ladies.
You're welcome! I also took these of the Wind & Sea Internet Cafe adjacent to the Rec Center. Well decorated, nice art, lots of flat screen tv's, and of course Starbucks :) In the same building is a mini-NEX, and a food court with smoothies, a Subway and Five Guys hamburgers.
Talking to my son on the phone now, he's excited about the volunteer opportunities! He's always wanted to volunteer in a zoo, that's going to be the first thing he checks out!!! He's been to the Rec Center, guess he just hasn't hooked up with anyone. Jess, he'd love to hook up with you guys. I sent you a friend request so we can exchange information. Marcy, is your son on base or is he on deployment?
Michelle, I have some thoughts for you, sending a PM/friend request. BTW I've done the car shipping thing between California & Hawaii, lived on Oahu (Hawaii Kai) for two years. Good ol' Matson :)
Before deployment, we had an apartment in Hampton and we got it from rent.com. If you find the apartment you want off of the website you can tell them and they will send you a 100 dollar visa gift card just for renting through them and the apartment we had gave us great discounts on rent every month. I highly recommend it.
My daughter just got her orders and she is asigned to the USS Arleigh Burke. I live in Wyoming and have never been to the east coast, so I have a lot of general questions about Norfolk area and how to find general info about the Arleigh Burke.
Also, go this group to find her ombudsman - http://www.navyformoms.com/group/whatsanombudsmanandhowtocontactthem - just ask "A Sailor's Mom" and she'll help you out, or read how to DIY in the Discussions. Then ask the Ombudsman for contact info for the Family Readiness Group (FRO).
Wow Becky, that's a lot to be proud of! Plus a washing machine?? Geez! I lived in a walk up a long time ago, 5th fl in Boston but it was a sublet and furnished thank heaven! It definitely affects what you buy at the grocery store when you have to think about hauling it home :)
Haha, my husband and I just moved into a third floor apartment in Hampton. In Jacksonville, we lived in one on the first floor, so to make multiple trips out to the car for grocerys was whatever. But when I went grocery shopping for the first time a few weeks ago, wow! The good thing is that you get quiet the workout everyday (:
