Ok, I will try to make this as concise as I can since I don't want a wall of text here.
For those who have missed my other recent posts because of the speed of this group, my girls 19th birthday is today. I have the necklace I got her awhile ago, but I wanted to put it on her in person when I see her and that may not happen for just over a month. I was just gonna call her and maybe mail a couple other things I had gotten her before so she could have on her birthday. I didn't get her address in time to mail the stuff. She expressed on the phone with me and on facebook about how she couldn't be happy and just wanted to be alone on her birthday and she was spending it alone. I knew then I had to do something, and I thought of flowers. This was yesterday

To help with logistics and likelihood of her actually receiving flowers I talked to Craig who helped me out a ton. He asked if I knew her barracks and room number which I didn't. She actually called me while I was chatting with Craig and I asked her. Was fun making up an excuse for why I wanted to know them lol. Knowing those numbers turned out to help a ton in all this, so get them from your sailor if you plan on sending flowers. I was going to use 1800 Flowers but due to what Craig was telling me I changed my mind and went with FTD instead. Had to make around a half a dozen calls to various people, FTD like 3 times. Called 2 different NEX's on and around Corry and got info. Called the local florist that was referred to me by the NEX in Corry Station. They didn't have a website but said they worked with FTD and them along with other assured me they would get through fine.

So, I call FTD for the last time and place the order. I give them the whole story of what I am trying to do. I give them all the info I have. Address, zip, PMB number, barracks number and room number. They gave the florist special instructions and I gave them my cell number and her cell number in case they needed to call her to come and get them at the gate or whatever. They said they would call me if there was any problems and would send me an email when they arrived. Which they did.

They sent me an email at 2:05pm my time (1:05pm her time) saying they had been delivered. It's 3:20pm my time right now btw. I was wondering how they were delivered. If they were left at the gate, if someone took them to another area or what. I assumed she hadn't actually seen them yet as she is still in class. I was just typing my reply here about getting the email confirmation and my phone rings and its her. This was at 2:20pm 15 minutes after I got the email. First thing she says is I love them. Says she is on a lunch break and couldn't talk long, but I asked how she received them. Said she was going to her room and when she opened the door there they were. Said she was laughing and smiling and said it was the best bday she could remember (sad if true considering she is away from all family and friends and me lol).

So, yeah call FTD. Get the most info as you can and if you actually get the barracks and room number of your sailor, its likely they will be in their room waiting for them to come and see them. Couldn't have went any better. I will end this saying call and make the order because of all the special instructions you will need to give and I think its a must to do it with a person on the phone rather than trying to order them online and type all the info and not being sure if whoever reads it understands the situation fully. Just use the FTD website to pick what you wanna send then call the number and place the order that way. I wouldn't place the order online.

  • Dawn L.

Dawn(Ben's Mom Ship 11 Div 295) - He's starts "A" school on Monday in mass communications. There are 3 other sailors from this PIR 9/2/10. They get along very well. They are spending this evening going to the movies. Tell everyone it gets easier after boot camp. He's stationed in Fort Meade, MD. He's now only 6 hours away from home and his uncle is also in the Navy and lives in Annapolis. It's so nice to be able to talk to Ben instead of waiting for a letter.

Has anyone ordered their free Blue Star Flag to hang in your window at home? It is available for free to anyone who has a son or daughter serving active duty in the military. I ordered one about 3 or 4 weeks ago and it came today. It is now hanging proudly in my living room window on the front of my home. Here is the link:

  • Dawn L.

Dawn L.(Ben's Mom Ship 11 Div 295) Talked to Ben today and he was on liberty for the weekend. He went to the mall with some others and bought some civilian clothes and a couple of books to read. He isn't allowed to wear civilian clothes yet, but he's putting them back for when he can. I don't think he'll be reading the books he bought soon, because he starts "A" school on Monday. I miss him and wish he were home , but I know that this is what he really wanted to do with his life.

  • Sharlene/Ship 007 Div 050

Ladies, our SR's PIR is 2 weeks away!  Any tips that you can pass along? ie driving to and parking on base vs taking a shuttle?  I'm the step-mom and I am not on the "list" for PIR, I've read that I can probably get seated after everyone on the lists are seated, what are your thoughts on this.  Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks!
  • richsmom (Div 818 PIR 9/2/10)

    Sharlene

We drove to PIR and did not take the shuttle.  We had to wait in line for a little while but it was't too bad.  Just leave early.  There was plenty of parking and it was well organized.  If you have  your own car then you can leave at your leisure and not have to worry about getting back at a certain time.

As far as not being on the listor not and getting a seat, I really can't say for sure.  My son's PIR had 14 divisions which I was told was the most ever.  I think we had plenty of room.  I'll try to get the answer for you.

BTW  Our car was picked randomly for a spot check upon pulling on to base.  We had to get out and open the trunk, glove compartment etc.  No big deal.

My hubby said it was because I looked so good in my dress.  Now wasn't that nice of him to say, especially after being married to me for 30 years.  HA HA

  • Sharlene/Ship 007 Div 050

Richsmom, Your husband sounds like a very smart man!  We are still debating driving vs shuttle.  We will probably play it by ear. I am willing to take my chances on getting in.  Even if I don't get in, I get to see our SR afterwards.  Thanks so much for the information.
  • richsmom (Div 818 PIR 9/2/10)

    Sharlene

Make sure you go the the meet and greet at the Ramada.  It was alot of fun to meet all the girls I'd bee chatting with.  A few of us are still friends and still chat.  It makes it so much more fun when you can put a face to the name and chat.

And have fun  I know we did.
