My mom said Andy still feels bad but is getting a little better with the antibiotic. I still think they have more than Bronchitis. I'm glad Andy didn't class up this last week because I don't think he would have done real well being as sick as he was. He said he wanted to stay in Starboard D for a few more weeks until he is in tip top shape. I feel SO bad for K gabby cause I know how wiped Andy was. I am still mad that he waited 8 days to go to medical. Maybe she can go today or tomorrow after school. It'll give her a few days of ABT's before starting next Monday.
  • gabbyhat

Sure hope so...will address that with her when I talk to her...glad Andy is feeling better...thanks
  • CaliMom (Maryann)

Andysmom & gabbyhat-so sorry to hear about the additional struggles your sailors are going through.  My son's situation wasn't the same as your sailors' so what I am about to say next may not encourage and help as much as it was intended, but, my son was in starboard D for quite a while before he classed up for RSS (they were handling starboard D a little differently then as opposed to now).  After all was said and done, he said he was glad that he spent so much time in Starboard D because he was a survivor so often that he heard the procedures on what the swimmers were supposed to do repeatedly, and that when it was his time to be the swimmer, he had the procedure down pat.  So in the end, the extended time in Starboard D was an asset to him.   Encourage your sailors that while anxious to start RSS, there is a silver lining to a delayed start.

And to pass on some wisdom that was imparted to me by the ladies here when my son was classing up and then had to be rolled back, God has a perfect plan for all of these sailors that includes whether or not they graduate as rescue swimmers and who they graduate with.  We just need to trust in the plan.

  • gabbyhat

Thanks Kevinsmom, really appreciate your comments...I wish she could've spent more time in Starboard D, but I think they have really sped up the pipeline lately trying to move ppl thru...haven't heard from her today...don't know how things went...Sooo, hopefully soon :-)
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Curtsmom...hi sista... been thinking about you!!!!!!!  How are things for you and the Sailor??  My B is soon to leave for SD CA.  three four weeks.

Kevin - I agree  about the hold time... the better prepared they are the better chances they will have while going through the RSS program..  actually my son even admitted that!!   Everyday is more and better strength and PT... they lose alot of that in BC believe it or not... the month and half or so helps them build back up!

Gabby - Andy - praying for both of your kids... I think they get fearful because of rolling ...  but my boy had several buddies who had sick roll but did okay later..  Its so frustrating for us mommies... we are soo helpless it seems!  I know!  Hang in there... they know and will push their limitations to the max... thats why they are Spec Ops kids!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Curtsmom check your message box !!!
  • gabbyhat

    Week one, RSS , done...onto week 2...
  • NavyWife10

Hi all--just a quick question to whoever can answer..  are the guys allowed to take leave if they are on hold to start up?  I know they can at BUD/S, but wasn't sure about this program..  There's alot of things they do differently here than at BUD/s  i. e.  Phase liberty, they don't have those there but they do in P.Cola..  Anyone know?
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Beth - HS-14 is who my son prays to be attached too after FRAC...

Yes our American Legion Riders do care packages... that is what we do and who we are!!  We ride to raise money, buy the products and ship em out.  I just friended you please message me back.  Please also tell me when did your son find out what squadron he was to be attached too.  All my son knows right now is HS-3 but that is FRAC Swimmer training sqaud.  I have asked several experienced  moms here but no answer from anyone yet...  guess everyone is super busy!  understandable!!!!   HELP   =0)

  • CCity

Hey everyone. I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me. My husband is still in bootcamp and he said he is thinking about switching to Rescue swimmer to Dry Air rescue. Can someone tell me what his job would be?
  • Andysmom

Chris. Awesome picture. You've got to be proud.  I just got word that my cousin, that is a Captain in the ARMY is back in the states too. She just returned from her second trip over seas. Nothing better than having our family home :) ENJOY And thank him for ALL of us !
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Chris - hoooooooyaaaaaaaa... look at those smiles!!!

CCity - Ill have to ask my son AGAIN.. he is wet...  he has tried to drill it into my head a few times but I can rememeber much...  I know that there are SAR who mann the floatation boats who go after the rescues first or in certain circumstances.  They dont jump from helo... I think they are not attached to helo squads...

BUT lets get Chris, Beth or Curtsmom or Texasmom to give a real answer.

Andys...  Praying for another great week for your sailor!

  • TexasMomof2

CCity, I'll see if I can explain it.  There is only 1 wet rescue swimmer and they are "Aircrew."  They go through the same schools as all aircrew rates BUT they then go on to aircrew rescue swimmer school, then on to FRAC, then to SERE.

There are surface-born rescue swimmers who are the ones that are deployed on ships BUTTTTTT they have a different rate.....they aren't aircrew rescue swimmers.  For example, my oldest son was a boatswain's mate on the USS Enterprise.  He volunteered and tried out for that ship's swimmer....but he wasn't fast enough.

This is a portion that I took from an article:

"....surface (ship-borne) swimmers that teaches basic lifesaving procedures and how to use lifesaving equipment. Doane explained, "Each Navy ship is required to have two qualified rescue swimmers on board before it can pull away from the pier – so our graduates are considered 'mission essential."  http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=41781

If someone deployed on a ship is interested in being that ship's designated swimmer, then they have to qualify and then go to a 4-week school.  They then return to their ship where they perform their rate for which they have a contract and then if need be for THAT SHIP, they perform rescues (man overboard and ???).

So, if I understand your posting, it sounds like your hubby wants to leave the aircrew rescue swimmer program and go to a different rate altogether BUT be a surface-borne swimmer?  This will be difficult if not impossible. They're not switching contracts.  If he decides he doesn't want to go with aircrew rescue swimmer, then he will most likely be undesignated.

Lydia, my son didn't find out permanent orders until about 4 months through FRAC.......

  • CCity

    Texas Mom-

Thanks for the information. It is a bit confusing but I am starting to understand. I will know more when I am able to talk to him again. I think he is going to stick with rescue swimming. He is having doubts because he isn't as fast as a lot of the other guys when it comes to swimming. I told him that his school is suppost to help with that. Plus he didn't really start swimming a lot until he got told that he can try for rescue swimming. I hope I find out more soon! You guys help so much. It makes me feel a lot less nervous.

  • TexasMomof2

CCity- it is very confusing....we all learn every day, trust me.  :o)  And, tell him to not doubt himself....just because he doesn't have as much of a "background" in swimming doesn't mean squat.  If he has the confidence, the initiative, and a strong desire to achieve...he will do great!  There are a lot of swimmers who don't have strong swimming backgrounds.  Hang in there and keep asking questions, okay?
  • CaliMom (Maryann)

CCity-I am going to echo what Texas Mom said.  My son just finished rescue swimmer school, and most definately was not a strong swimmer when he first started.  He is only 18, and joined the dep program when he was in high school.  He was not a swimmer in high school, and in fact when he had to do the first swim test to get a spec ops contract, he could barely finish, and didn't know any strokes.  His recruiter told him to go on youtube to find out how to do the side stroke for the swim.  He then practiced that until he was fast enough to get a contract.  His boot camp PT & the personal PT he did while waiting to class up helped his overall conditioning and strength, but what really helped him was the amount of flutter kicks he had to do in RSS.  My son ended up being one of the strongest swimmers in his class.  My son's DESIRE to be a rescue swimmer was just as important to his success as his physical strength & ability to swim.  The navy can condition the body & teach the swimming, but there is nothing they can do about the desire.  The mental attitude is very important and within the control of the sailor to possess.  So encourage your sailor to go to the pool as much as he can while he is waiting to class up to work on his swimming strength & speed, and if his desire is there, the rest will come.
  • Christi

Chris, congrats....he's back. Love those smiles!!
  • CCity

KevinHMom-Thanks for telling me your son's story.

My husband actually didn't pass the PT tests that they had him do in the dep program at first. But after a few trys he got so much better and he cut down a lot of time. So he is getting better. I think he just needs to stop comparing himself to the other guys when it comes to swimming. Swimming is the only thing he needs to work on. He is a fast runner and he is very fit. I think he just needs to be more confident in himself. He also said hes worried about it taking him away from his family a lot. but being deployed is part of the military. But I let him know that no matter what, me and his son will be here for him. Does ur son get deployed a lot?

  • CCity

I also was wondering if any of your sailors got to come home at all before they started school in Pensacola. I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to have to make the trip over there by myself or if he might get some time before starting school and that way he can drive over there with me. I know he probably wont. But I just wanted to make sure.
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

CCity - from BC they go straight to Pcola.  No leave time.  Once he phases up (3 - Phases) he will have more freedom to go off base.  Phase 3 they can even do an overnighter but there are regulations as to how far they are allowed to go.
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

    {{{HUGS and PRAYERS}}}

  • Christi

Lydia, I'm an "old" member on here. My son is almost to year 4. He's in SD. Talking about making a career out of it...I certainly hope so. The private sector is lean on jobs right now.  My sailor and Chris A's sailor went to P'Cola at the same time and went on to SD together (road trip), they also graduated FRAC together. My sailor is back in another FRAC...training on a diff helo platform. Training is never ending...keeps them sharp.
  • CaliMom (Maryann)

So my son just told me that he might class up next week (he will be Sierra). While I'm glad for him, that really messes up my plans to go visting him in June when my husband and I go to the east coast for a wedding.  We took off extra time just so we can go see him, and now he may not be there.  Isnt that just the way?
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Christi -- yes I have seen your posts from time to time!  What platform is he now training for?  Awesome!

Kevin --  He can wind up east or west coast.  My son's buddy who has been through the pipeline with him and is the same is heading to VA and my son to CA -- so it can go either way.  Both are Sierra.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Kevin - Oh sorry I think I get your post now.  I thought you were thinking that he would head West after A and yall would miss him but it cause he is classing up quicker.  Got it... hahaha
  • mom2four

Hi Lydia and everyone- sorry to not have posted, just waiting to be able to start our road trip to graduation this weekend!  So glad this 8 weeks is almost done.  Can anyone share when they get their first opportunity to come home for a bit?  All of his friends are asking and I don't know.

  • mom2four

A couple more questions... do we need to delete pics of our boys like the Seal moms do?  How careful do we need to be with our boys names and such? Thanks!
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

mom2four - My son was in the middle of RSS at Christmas and because the base went on stand down... he was allowed to take leave time to come home but...  technically, after they grad A school they have about a week to get to their next station... so most of the kids are going home or on a road trip then.  Of course you can go see him if he is Phased up.

Better safe than sorry mom2four....  they ask that we do not post any photos on public forum especially Spec Ops and Warefare.... I have seen it said that if you do post a pix to be certain that the name on the uniform is not ledgible..  I however just try not to post here in the forum... I have pictures in my profile which is for friends only and Im selective as to whom I friend.  So I would not post here no.   Of course you see pix of the Sailors all over Navy.mil but all the same... I just dont.

  • NavyWife10

Lydia- Thanks for asking, we're doing great.  He's still getting adjusted to the new way of living.. He says he feels like he is back in boot camp again.. lol!  Alot of things done differently than BUD/S!  We got our apartment and finalized everything yesterday to be moving soon..SO EXCITED! =]
  • mom2four

Lydia,  thank you for the response. One more, how about their non- military pics?  Did you take them off FB and such too??  Sorry to bother...
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

mom2four...  I have put both in my My Page photos... it is suppose to be secure..  Just not here in the comments areas.  Well, lets put it this way... remember that NavyforMoms is read all over the world by any and everyone...  good bad and terrorits..  So I dont want them putting two and two together to find my son.  Now that might be over-kill as some other moms have told me but my son is Special Operations and I wont take any chances.  I have tons of photos of him in uniform etc on my FB and a few here in my "My Page" but both are secured to friends only.  I say dont put anything here nor say anything that you dont want a terrorists to read.   That is my rule of thumb....  =0D   You are no bother sista!!!  We are all in this together!
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

CsW - I think we do not have to worry about the military pay scare that we talked about earlier by the way..  Yea you are moving!!!  Tell him that once he classes into NACCS and RSS - it wont be like boot camp any more. The fun will be over!  =0)
  • mom2four

Lydia... that make total sense to me!  Thanks again... :)

  • Christi

Lydia, my son is training for a "subdued" version of the Sierra platform called the Hotel platform, so that they can do additional training with their sister squadron from the East Coast. His squadron is in a reclass phase right now...going from mostly Reserve to SpecOps combat support. He is one of the rare few that have not been deployed in his 4 years in. Which is okay by me, but not for him. He  LOVES his squadron though which may be the driving force for him to stay in.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Christie - which HS are he and his sister squadron that are reclassing??.  Ive been reading up on a lot of them on FB and looking at the helo pix on Navy.mil..   trying to "get it" ...  hahaha.  Is her currently Romeo and switching to Sierra?  My son is Sierra and wants combat too.  Of course he is just heading to HSC-3 FRAC in a couple of weeks.

mom2four -  right!!!  never to careful!

  • ochaos

Cs - glad to hear you get to  move and that things are falling into place for you. How soon do you think it will be before you move?  It will be so nice for you to be together.
  • NavyWife10

Hey there ochaos!! Are you in this group or still a mom of 87? Either way, good to hear from you!!! We move into our apartment May 14th, but will be staying down there starting April 7th.. Our time has finally came, after a year!!!!
  • Jill (ATO Mom)

Update on my daughter:  the recruiter says that before she can take the PST for AIRR she has to take a test called the CSORT, and then take some special eye test down at the marine base.  I thought the CSORT was only for Seal candidates, but I could be mistaken.  Did any of your swimmers have to take the CSORT?  And what is this special eye test?  The recruiter has never had a AIRR candidate before so I'm not sure he is up on it.  He told her she had to get a special ops waiver before she could take the pst, but now he is saying she has to take the pst first before she can get a waiver... it's all just so confusing when you think it's all figured out and then they change it on you.  But I'm wondering about this CSORT test... anyone heard of it?

  • mom2four

Hi Jill,  I am pretty sure that this is the one my SR took before he left for BC.  Here's a link with more information- http://www.navycs.com/navy-challenge-program.html. If you go to the bottom, it address this test.  Good luck!
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

ochaos HELLO!!  Have you posted here before?  Me and my memory or lack thereof!  Anyway hi - is your sailor Rescue Swimmer?  How far into the pipline?

CsW - Im excited for you!

Jill - I know that all of Aircrew have to pass a color blind test.  My sons buddy failed it in Boot Camp and they switched his rate.  Now Im not sure if that is the same or a different one.  Im sure the waiver is because - dont I remember that she had a medical issue that she was working through.  Again , I have not seen you post here in a while so I was not sure.  Doing the PST before the waiver seems like putting the cart before the horse but the goal is to get that waiver!!!!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

I JUST LOVE THIS T-Shirt!!!!    hoooooyaaaaaaaaaaa  My son has it.

  • Kyle's mom

Good Morning All!  Just back from sunny, beautiful Pensacola!  Saw my Rescue Swimmer!!!!!  HOOYAH!  He graduated RSS last Thursday and started A School on Friday, how's that for no hold time.  He'll be in Norfolk mid April!  Guess Momma Navy decided to speed things up!

Lydia - I WANT THAT T-SHIRT!  Can Navy Moms get that shirt?  All of a sudden I'm into rescue swimmer tshirts..........

  • Kyle's mom

Another question - Anyone know of FRAC groups and/or a Norfolk group that anyone knows about?  I found a Norfolk group but the last post was almost a year ago.
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Kyles mom - no... the guys can get them while in RSS...  my son and yours are now out so I dont think he can still get it.  Im sure if he can he can buy one and mail it to you or get it to you when he sees you!  I dont think they are sacred or anything.  I know they are not available on line or anything like that.

Christi - Ohhh kewl!  Sounds exciting.  I know B would love to do something like that.  He will be miserable if he is just sitting around..  he just is not that way.  He has to be going G-force at all times hahahahaha!

  • ochaos

Love the shirt!!!  There are some available online but not that particular one.
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

  • CaliMom (Maryann)

Still waiting for my son to class up after RSS.  He heard he might class up this coming week, so we'll see.

Lydia- did your son have a chance to indicate his preference for SD or Norfolk?
