Hey everyone... I been MIA on vacation up in New Hampshire.. I went to a navy mom from our PIR group whom I have stayed close to sort of a reunion. 4 of us moms and hubs.. it was soooooo fun!!!! I love my Navy Mom friends!!!
momof Dan - like Jodi said.. it totally depends on the needs of the navy... My son signed his contract in the fall of 09 and went to BC July of 2010.. PIRd 09-02-2010... same with his buddy one year later. But its no telling however, that is a great time for him to continue beefing up his PT scores and if his recruiter is doing his job he will hook him up with weekly training.. let us know!!! AND YES ALL NEWBIES PLEASE GO UP AND READ THE PATH OF THE RESCUE SWIMMER IT ANSWERS A LOT OF GENERAL QUESTIONS but you are soooo welcome here to ask anything you need too... we are here together
teamnavy - HOOOOOOYAAAAAA AND A WHOOOOP We knew you would get that contract just a matter of time sista! Perseverance.. now just keep working to beef up your scores even more.
jmh8642 and Jesse's Mom and Jodi..... well, perhaps your boys will bump into each other~!! meanwhile.. okay they have to PT test OUT of NACCS (once they pass it they give them a vigorous PT test) and then after hold is over they have to test IN to RSS... they have to beat their scores each time. Not all the guys make it... sooooo my advice to your boys is... while on hold work their butts off to improve everything they can do... also, flutter kicks, Mask clearing at multiple depths, PT and more and then start all over again.. run on the beach many miles a day... all this over and over and over until they class up. RSS has a huge Atrition Rate.. there may be 40 in a class to start but only 9 left which was the case in my sons class - he was one of nine.. mental is key also. Must be able to look past the stress and see the goal. Good luck to your boys! Stay here and let us know how they do. You will lose a lot of sleep!! =P
Welcome back Lydia, glad you took some time to yourself. Thanks for the advice, I'm sure all three of us will be on the phone shortly repeating this to our sons.
Jack - AWESOME!! Hang in there and send lots of letters the mail will start to flow soon... takes about three weeks.. Let us know how he is doing!! We miss ya Dad!
Thankx yall, Im glad to be back... there's no place like home as they say.. though a good vacation with amazing Navy friends is Great!
Soooooooooooooo how are our kids who are in RSS doing? How are their Moms? as I look back on the past three years of all of this... that was the LONGEST 5 weeks of my life!! I lost tons of sleep, gained weight, just became a basket case! Any A school on holds???? Any assigned to Sierra or Romeo yet? Just trying to get caught up with everyone here!!!
My B does his final and last training flights in November and then will be ready to receive those gold wings!!! Three years from the date he signed his contract he will be finished with the training! Woow what a roller coaster... woow I have aged a lot! hahahahahah..... Then will come the deployment... I call it the "D" word! uggggg.... BUT it is what they work for.. its the light at the end of their long tunnel! So for him Im very happy and he is happy - all that matters.
Afternoon, Lydia. J is still hanging in there. He survived the first week. No major (or minor) injuries which sounds like a blessing in itself. I guess making it through with only muscle soreness is good. He's loving Pensascola and I'm sure he'll be loving it more in a few months when it starts snowing at home!
My son is still at Great Lakes on hold for his raspberry allergy. He's been told that they only process 5 medical waivers a week and he's in the 4th tier (which is at or close to the bottom) of people who get their medical waivers processed. He's pretty bummed. He said his group is waiting to class up in January in Pensacola so he's hoping to be able to join them by then.
Jesse is hanging in there. He said last night there are only 15 fellows left. He complains of body soreness but nothing seems to be hurt or anything so I am thankful for that. I just tell him to keep plugging away at it and stay positive.
Well, hurry up and wait is the motto. Had a great talk with K last night. Since they are phasing out his helo, there is so much unknown as to when graduation is and then where he will go and when he can leave for Christmas. Wish the Navy had special arrangements with the airlines since you can't get the tickets early, that's for sure. :) Praying he can stay in SD which is his hometown. Can't wait to hear how flying went today.
Did he go into Chicago this weekend? My son went with 3 or 4 guys and were meeting up with 3 or 4 other guys to do some sightseeing. They'd like to go to a football game sometime while they're still in the Chicago area.
He said someone had brought food into their area so they've been having 3-hour inspections which had been keeping him from working out with the special ops "pool guys." I'm grateful he will have the extra time in Great Lakes to work with those guys who can give him some extra help on what he might need to work on before he goes to Pensacola. His sister is ready to visit him in Florida already though!
M called last night and said he's thinking of changing jobs. There's another Air Rescue candidate that's been waiting for months to go to Pensacola. That guy is like 31st on the list and figures he has another 4 month wait, while my son is 66th on the list and he's afraid he'll have like another 8-12 months in Great Lakes just being on hold. I hope he takes his time and really researches all his options before making a decision. I didn't think about it at the time, but my husband says he'll probably still have to wait for his raspberry allergy waiver before he can move to another position. I think he's thinking he wants to move to a position that is in the 1st or 2nd tier of people whose waivers go through. Prayers for wisdom (and patience!) for this young man.
shawn, so sorry that your son is having to wait so long. It must be discouraging to have his heart set on something and then not being able to do it through no fault of his own. Hopefully he will either decide to wait or find another job that he feels passionate about. Best of luck to him whatever his choice.
Shawnship - and others......Clearly the hold times can work on these kids' minds... that is part of the game that they play on them.. Psych them out and make them Drop... Shawn - if he is already thinking of changing his Rate.. and questioning whether he can handle this frustrating hold... then he will have a hard time once he is actually in Pcola as it is still a lot of hold time and frustration and the pressure to perform top notch is grueling.. this is part of why a lot of the kids DOR once they get to Pcola.. he will have to have 100 percent certainty that this is what he wants ... so better for him to chose now.. if he Drops once in Pcola then the chance that he will go undesignated is about 99 percent and that means the navy will put him where They want him and he might not like it at all. I have seen this happen so many many times. And the kids are miserable. I agree with hubby, he will still have to wait on the med problem anyway.. Hold times can be sooo beneficial tho Ill tell you that. My son said that those hold times made the difference of his making it ... he said they lose sooo much weight and muscle during BC and they have to have SO MUCH more to pass NACCS and RSS that he used that time to beef up and work back up to full strength plus 100 times more. Of course each kid will have to make their own decision but I hope he hangs in there unless one of those Rates he is looking at is really a GREAT one to switch over too.. Does your son know BJs son who is also on hold... its great if they have a buddy to encourage one another and keep each other focused and going!
Jesse's and Jodi..... How did the kids do this past week,, week 2 now for them right? Arent they together or are they one week apart in RSS? Man Im praying for yall.... that is the hardest time during this long pipeline is getting the through RSS...
Thanksgiving... my son was not allowed to come home - he had paseed NACCS and was on hold for RSS.. now the base does goes on Stand down at Christmas and their chances are extremely great to come home then.. my son was in the very middle of RSS - broke for 2 weeks for Christmas and then finished RSS in Jan. I do know that the USO at the Nex have a Thanksgiving day for the kids - food games etc.. I think my son and his buddies went to Dennys tho. So Im not sure if there are exceptions to this or not. But Christmas will be a good probability
Well, anyhooooooooo - Im praying for all my NorthEast moms and dads with that storm heading yalls way!!!!!! xoxoxoxoxox
Hang in there yall... all we can do as parents is encourage, discuss, pray and then hope our kids will make wise decisions.
I believe Jesse and Josh are in the same group. Jesse has been doing well from what he tells me - he thinks the worst of it is over, but I'm not so sure. He says they started out with 37 and now only have 15 left. My family and I were planning to stay with him on the base Thanksgiving day and the day after, as we are heading down to Fort Lauderdale after that for a 5 day cruise. So - I'm secretly hoping he has to stay in Pensacola for Thanksgiving. But I know he wants to come home - he's homesick. So far - Jesse hasn't complained of any injury - that's a relief...
Check into the possibilty of losing the sign up bonus, etc if contract changes they may lose the sign up bonus!!!!! My Son lost his from changing from SWCC to RSS.
Sweetpea...ugggg I did not know that!!!! - I just assumed they re signed a new contract with a bonus........ But man when that bonus hits that account (minus taxes) they love it and B said it was worth the effort and wait.. he was able to pay off his truck and Credit Card... and have extra for his savings account.
Jesse - okay I thought so... well, I dont know about just week 2... actually B said week 3 was the killer.. and then after that.. starting week 4 the guys seemed to be a Team. Still they lost a few but nothing like weeks 1 - 3... B class ended up with 9 and only he was the original one who started at that week 1 - the other 8 guys were guys that had been in classes ahead of him that failed and rolled back in. from almost 40 guys to 9.. so that is why the attrition rate is so high.. Im just praying for both yalls boys to kick butt and do this!!! Im glad that your boy sounds confident.. that is a Good thing!!! AND by the way.. if by slight chance they do fail a test and a re-test, they almost always give them that second chance to go on hold and roll back into another class... no shame in that for sure!!!!!!! But praying that they will just shoot on through with no hitch!!!!! Just a footnote but, if Bs best buddy from middle school who went in a year after B... had not failed and failed and then rolled back in and passed finally.... him and B would not have been together cause all the guys in Rs class went Romeo to VA and R after rolling back in went Sierra and got to be with B for another year plus.. so you see, sometimes there are rainbows in every storm...
sweetpea, that's a bummer all the way around. Glad he's happy with what he's doing though.
Jesse's mom, I guess we both have our fingers crossed that the worst is behind them and if they made it this far they can go all the way. Enjoy your time with Jesse at Thanksgiving. I'm jealous lol.
Lydia, I emailed your comments to him so that he knows to suck it up and keep plugging along. I'll just be glad when RSS is over even though I know he still has a long way to go.
My son got his sign on bonus a few weeks ago. They took 5K off for taxes. He got a new tool box and a car for his new wife. Wish he had longer time off for Christmas but doesn't look like it with his new squardon. I got him a Go Pro camera for his birthday and his instructor let him wear it on helo jumps. I can't wait to see it!
Jodi - awesome!! how bout our Jesse's boy? Jodi. hahaha suck it up and keep plugging - sorry if I sounded that bad!
sweetpea, if he loves what he is doing then that is worth it all anyway for sure! If they are happy us mammas are happy!!!
Andys - awesome! My B has the Go Pro and he took pix from the helo as well as from the nose of his surf board while surfing.. really crazy kewl pictures!!! what a great camera!
Johun: April of 2011. Come to find out he went through RSS with a broken wrist. He fought through it. After RSS he had his wrist Xrayed and it was a broken Schaphoid. He was in a cast for 6 weeks and then ended up with surgery. He has since finished SERE and almost done with FRS. Would have been done 2 weeks ago but helo's were out of commission.
AWESOMEness... so we have THREE Rss boys right now and yes week three is Hell week my B said.. after that it get so much better!!! The instructors stop yelling so much and the kids act as a Team.. remember BC and now they told us that after about week 5 things would get better for the recruits.. sorta the same with RSS my son said.
Andysmom... doesnt it seem like a million years ago! hahaha.. Bman will have been out of RSS for two years this January.. yet it was such an intense time that it is EVER etched into my brain!
Godspeed our Jesse's boy, our Johun and Jodi's boys!!!!!!!!!!! Mega prayers heading up for them this upcoming week!
Wonder how our TeamNavy is doing?
Well, God bless any of yall up in the North East states!!! Praying for yall for safety!!!!
I'm doing great! Finished my first tough mudder today! ..which was surprisingly very easy and made it up "Everest" (the half pipe) on my first try!
This past Thursday we had a statewide PST and the contracted had to do 2...back to back sooo swim, push, sit, pull, 3 mi run, pull, sit, push, swim...then 3 hours of pool training... Proud to say I passed the second one too and my push-ups are up to 60 now with a new goal of 90 to hang with the boys ;) I ship in 144ish days! I'll probably sign up for a half marathon to do in Dec. since my run times are my greatest challenge
Have been in the back ground reading everyones posts. My Son, also a B, was in Div. 817, PIR 7/27/12 and would have graduated RSS two teams ago but injured his shoulder the last day, can you believe it? He rolled back and has just classed back up into this group going through. Week 3. True to his nature he took it all in stride and is hoping for the best. Had his first day back yesterday and after 3 weeks off he was exhausted yesterday. Even with working out, everything but his shoulder, everyday. He is glad to be back in it though and is enjoying his new team. Please pray his shoulder holds up, he has worked so hard. Funny thing is the physical has always been easy for him, the books, not so much. Now it is the opposite. Let's get our prayer chain going for all our boys, power of prayer is something! Thanks ladies. Holding my breath for three weeks, for sure.
My soon will be graduating from boot camp Nov 9th -- and heading to Pensacola the next day. I am so nervous ... are there any other moms here from ship 04 div 823?
HI Chris'mom - well, be sure and invite them to come here... from your PIR site that I assume you are probably on here in M4M ... congrats to you and to him! We are here for you! Please go up and read The Path of the Rescue Swimmer as it will help you ALOT.. also we are right here for each other... My son B is done and finished with this entire Pipeline and is in his Squadron in CA.... There are many new mommas here and some of use old planks also that will gladly help you!!!!
Alumni... Wooooow okay so now we have 4 boys in RSS week three... man I was awake last night praying for all my sista Navy moms up in the Northeast and thinking about this week for these boys.... I pray all four of them will push on through!!!
Teamnavy.... awesomenesss... my B did the Tough Mudder in CA a few months back and they rocked and loved it.. a bunch of the guys of course did it together.. He said the greatest part was competing right next to Wounded Warriors.. and SEALs.. tooo kewl. Also, sounds like you have a great plan to get beefed up.. unfortunately, you will be competing again the guys and they will show no mercy as you already know! Your scores are great! You will get to your goals Im sure...!!!!!
Hugs to all and prayers to those in the North East States!
J told me last night that 4 rolled into their class so there are now 19 heading into week 3. He seems to be in good spirits. I hope he still is this evening lol!
Is there a Navy department that helps the kids make flight plans when they finally find out if they can go home for Christmas? Do some airlines have discounts for military? My son will hopefully get to leave Great Lakes and come home to Washington State for a week or so.
Shawn... not unless they are going to their new base or being deployed... I had to make Bs flights for him the past two years when he came home on leave at Christmas. CheapOAir is a site (I think that was it) that has cheap flights.. I got it off a Military site and of course there is Travelocity as most everyone has used them before. Shawn Im soo glad you will get to see him at Christmas..
Jodi - sure am praying for the 4 boys!!!!!! <3 to them
Shawn - ps ---- I put his flight on my credit card but he paid me back... these kids are making a nice little pay check now!!! =) This year he has his on navy credit union card and will buy his own flight... they gotta learn sometime right!!!
Chris'mom- I have a son in ship 04 div 823. I am so excited to see him on nov. 9th. I am going crazy waiting for the "I'm a sailor" call. Hoping everything is going well. I have got letters, but haven't actually heard his voice since he left. I missed his phone call.
Hi dbristol -- I missed one of my son's calls -- it's hard to answer calls when at work (with autistic children in therapy rooms). I am flying out of Houston Thursday, and hope to make it to one of the Meet & Greets that evening. Not sure what the drive will be like since I don't know the area. What hotel are you staying at? I met another mom here who is also staying at the Residence Inn and hope to follow the next morning to the base. I can't wait to see my son.
Chris'mom and dbristol, welcome to the group. I will actually be at the 11/9 PIR for my son's best friend, but my son has been at Pensacola since 9/2. I am also staying at the Residence Inn so maybe I'll see you there. I'm hoping to make Sarge's Meet & Greet, it's a nice one and he has a very nice presentation. Hope we all get the call today.
We are staying at the Ramada Inn. We only have about a 3 1/2 hour drive. We are probably not going to make it to any of the meet and greets because we are waiting till my daughter gets out of school to head out on Thursday.
I would suggest riding the shuttle. It's $3.00 a person and they drop you off right at the gate. Much less hassle. Thats what I did for my son's graduation and it was so much easier than trying to find my way there. Did you get the call yet? My son's best friend just called. His division all passed, YEAH!!!
Okay RSS mammas... how did the boys do this week????
PIR is AMAZING but I have to tell you... the mammas that I bonded with at the Meet N Greet and here on N 4 M... are still after all these years my dear friends!!! if you can go do it!!! If not... of course it is understandable.. not everyones schedule is the same... we had soooo much fun at Ramadas MnG...
most all the hotels have a shuttle that will take you from the hotel to the PIR and back... no worries just get in line early that morning
My J is still hanging in there. He seems to be in good spirits. He made a stupid mistake on one test but came back and passed it yesterday (when do they use a parachute anyway?) I can't wait until this class is over.
Lydia--my J has completed week 3 in rss...had to redo one thing the other day...and passed. He is doing awesome and loves it. He is definitely glad he was in starboard D for 3 weeks--prior to classing up--he said it has reduced his anxiety and stress, since he already knows what they are looking for. He calls every day and is pretty positive. He has made some incredible friends.
okay... this is two of four boys... johun and Jodi... wht about our other two??? no pressure...just waiting to here... we are here for you mammas!! AND OUR boys... and girls!!! if they did not fair so well, no worries... they can roll... please let us know... we pray and worry!!!!

Andysmom--when did your son graduate RSS?

Andysmom

Is there a Navy department that helps the kids make flight plans when they finally find out if they can go home for Christmas? Do some airlines have discounts for military? My son will hopefully get to leave Great Lakes and come home to Washington State for a week or so.

Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)
Shawn... not unless they are going to their new base or being deployed...

Jodi-alumni - I'll leave word at the front desk -- I would like to follow others since I am not familiar with the area.
Thank you so much,
