Christine! I so missed you ((((((hugs))))). FYI....I mailed several 1040s at 6:00 PM on 4/15 - LOL
baseballelmo My son's division also won Captains Cup. The division had the following benefits: longer phone call and longer Liberty days on PIR weekend. This was his experience - it all depends on the RDC. Congratulations to him! You too Mom! : ) ~ kk
Here's a video I recorded of the 4/9 PIR - Div 921!! 900 Divisions also are rifle, flags, choir, and ushers "people catchers". Depends, I don't think every graduating class has a "Triple Threat" 900 Div.. That is Band, Choir and Rifles.
My grandson was in division 900 and graduated from boot camp on March 12th, 2010. How proud we were of him. He had high test scores in joining and then was asked about playing musical instruments etc. He had played in school, several different instruments but was not real good at either of them but they asked him to be the band director, which he was. It was so thrilling to see him come through those doors ahead of the band with his wand in hand. It was the most exciting time I ever spent, other than the day he was born and the nurse handed him to his dad and his dad was scared and just handed him right over to me, he then bonded to me...what a thrill it was, but then seeing him become the man he is today. In his A school, will graduate around June 24th or close to that date... He will join my grand-daughter on the James E Williams Nuclear fighter ship after he takes 2 weeks leave...all this is like a dream. Two grandchildren on the same ship. (they are cousins). Three of my children have one in the service.... God bless them all is my prayers. This is hard for my children....but it is really hard on this old 70 year old grandmother. I love them so much...I am so proud of them all. 17 grandchildren...wow!!!!!
We got a letter yesterday. My son is designing the division flag and the rough sketch has Triple Threat on it. Now I understand what that means. They are REALLY busy preparing for Hell week and last we they had a great week on the Marlinspike. He said it is hard to write on Sunday since they are a preforming group and that they are having 2 tests next week. He sounded pumped up for Hell week....
The performance group does all that regular bootcampers do, plus all the marching and practice for the ceremony. I'm so excited for you Patty. It is amazing to be there. They are the very first group to march in too. I didn't even realize it was them, but the doors opened and they marched in like all the other groups do later. Watch for him then:)
Hey there- My coworker is prior Navy. She says the 900 is referred to as SMART because of all the extra stuff they have to learn on top of the regular Boot Camp. They carry flags, band and chior and it's REALLY cool.
She is happy to hear we have our sons and daughters in thsi division. and she says COngrats on that!.
Would love to hear from other Moms who have someone in the Ship 6 Division 931 -My son Chase is at Boot Camp and scheduled to graduate June 18th-I keep reading a lot of different things about tests and battle stations and I am not familiar with the lingo can someone point me in the correct direction?
Cheryl- my son was in his division for a few days longer because they had to fill the division. She the two guys he left with are grad on the 4th his is the 11th. He told me he plays at 2 PIR's before his so I'm waiting for someone to post video from the May 27th and June 4th so I can see if I see him.
When my son was at GL RTC, I sent him a NEX Gift Card. Although the NEX Gift card can be used at the Rickie NEX, he used his when he arrived at his A School location. I have included the link above. My best advice is to have the gift card come to YOU. Then you can enter the proper address and send it off to your SR at GL RTC. The link above will give you all the information needed. This is also a great "thinking of you" gift from grand parents, aunts, and uncles, etc. : ) ~ kk
< holds Deb's hand > oh, I remember that feeling.. How many times have you picked up your cell phone to make sure it's still on? Are you walking from room to room with both your cell phone and the house phone in your hand?
Bravo Zulu to your Sailor!! My son (who's PIR was 4/9) was in Div 921. He texted me this morning and said that DIV 931 was in front of him in the "Human Flag" I said "That's because 900 Div are the Best of the Best and they put them in front of the BEST Sailor!"
I know you'll have a fantastic time at PIR!! Such an amazing experience.. All of it!!
Zack's Mom, They actually posted something on the RTC Great Lakes FB Page (as well as on the US NAVY FB Page) But, on the RTC FB page they also show some pictures that show the recruites up close as they were lining up to march across to the base side!! Let me see if I can post the link here.
If you don't already have them on your facebook search for : U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command to find the page.
Tyra, it is a huge honor to be in the 900 division. My daughter was totally shocked to be in the group. It is tough because they not only do all that bootcamp does, but learn to perform as well. She was able to carry our WA state flag and it was AMAZING!!! I have to say that the calls home are few and far between. Just mail him something every day. They totally live for their mail. My daughter and I were closer by mail than we are by phone:) And "no news is good news" is the best piece of advice ever!!!
Mary (Mike'smom,Ship6,Div937) ~ My son was in a 900 series division. During his time at GL RTC, the division was told by their RDCs that they are in an Honor Division. The 900 series divisions have two or three (triple threat) performance types to practice in addition to their normal boot camp duties, tasks, tests, etc. When my son was at GL RTC, the division he was in filled up later as the 88 Recruits (44 male & 44 female) were interviewed prior to entrance. They were pre-selected by criteria that could have been high ASVAB testers, prior leadership, prior employment experiences, etc. Yes, they are a performance division, as they do perform their PIR and the two (2) prior - unless this has been increased. They have an Honor Guard, all 50 State Flags, a drum corp, rifle drill team, etc. - to name a few. Some think they are music and band - not the case. Some have never played an instrument. They are amazing! They are proud! They work very hard! Some do not make it the first couple of weeks. If they are not retained - they may be sent to another division. Sometimes these slots are filled from other divisions. And yes...they are the first PIR group to enter the Grad Hall - as they disburse and wait until their performance time(s). You can spot some of them sitting high in the bleachers on the sidewalls watching you! LOL We were outside, quiet as mice, while the division marched from about a mile away to the Grad Hall. As the cadence became louder and louder, we held hands tighter and tighter! We had to be tight lipped and they had to keep their military bearing. The 900 series divisions are such an honor and a very good experience. When they go off to A School - they will remember other 900 series divisions and they will be remembered; others help them incoming and they help others incoming ~ nice huh? : ) ~ kk
My son had his PIR 6/4. He was in a 900 division, first as a drummer and then as a flag carrier. It is very special. They perform at all the PIR's while they are in BC. it is a great honor!
I KNOW THE FEELING! My son has grwn so much since that day I dropped him off for BC. He said being in the 900's really made him proud to be Navy and proud to be an American. PIR was the greatest day! Janis
Looking for mommas who have kiddos on Ship 06, Div 939. Left for boot camp June 15. Haven't heard anything since the "I'm here" call. And I still haven't gotten the clothes box yet. Dreading that. But very proud of her for being in the 900 divisions. I've heard that is an honor. She was in color guard all through high school, Guess that might have something to do with her placement there. Can't wait to see her at PIR!
Hi Kimmydee! Glad to have found you too! Still waiting on the dreaded box.....and still waiting on a letter. I'm so worried for my daughter, because I know what she's like, and structure is not her thing LOL! But I've been told I will be surprised by the daughter that comes home :) My daughter will go on to A school and then to reserves for two years, finish her college degree and then go active. Sounds like a plan. I live in West Virginia, but I have a LOT of relatives that live in Longwood FL, right outside Orlando. You must be baking down there! Its near 100 up here in the mountains!
In my son's first letter he asked me WHY I never LET him make his own bed or fold his clothes! He also was not one for structure or organization but since BC, all that has changed. He went in as a boy and came out a man. Thank you USN!
saw something on another group that I MUST join. It made me laugh and cry at the same time. It refered to the "box" as Kid In a Box.--everything but the kid. LOL Kid not included.
Kimmiedee and Kyle Melissa, you are right about the names...what is funny is that you will ask your daughter's if she knows so and so and she will have no idea because they only know last names. They don't really learn their first names until several weeks into bootcamp. My daughter thought is was so random that I would talk to other Mom's on here, but it got me through the 8 weeks. Several of us have kept in touch on facebook since we met at the "meet and greet" that is held the night before PIR.
Good luck with the wait! It seems like it takes forever!!! But it is so worth it on PIR day:)
When your PIR date is set, usually one of the Mom's will set up a separate link to the meet and greet. It is held at the Ramada in Waukegan. We stayed there for PIR since that is where the meet and greet was held. I would suggest staying in Gurnee. The hotel was very gracious, the linens were great, they love the sailors, the pizza for room service was amazing.....but the hotel is older and a little out dated. There is also not much around the area, like there is in Gurnee. Just my opinion! The Gurnee Mall is I believe 2.5 miles long and has tons of outlets. Pretty cool. Most of the restaurants etc. were in the Gurnee area also.
The Ramada had the best pizza ever and a large pizza and salad delivered to the room was like 15.00.
Write, write, write....every day....they live for the letters!!!
I don't really know a particular hotel. I just know a hotel in Gurnee would have saved driving to get food, shop, etc. I am sure there will be all different prices too. The Ramada was very reasonably priced but again, pretty old. There is really good information in the "what to expect for PIR". As you get closer feel free to ask questions. My 24 year old daughter and 5 month old grandson went with me. She is going back over the July 4th weekend with her now 8 month old son to visit. My daughter just started her Gunners Mate school at Great Lakes.
I will ask my sailor where to stay close to base. They stay at hotels off base every weekend now. She must have some favorites:)
Your sailors will have to wear their uniform all weekend. You will feel so proud. We graduated in dress blues. They will be in dress whites now. I think there are some pictures on my profile page.
I'm feeling a little better today. Got my form letter with grad date and the little handwritten note at the bottom, and then SURPRISE! Hiding in the junkmail was this little envelope with a REAL letter. Once again, waterworks LOL, but I managed to control myself long enough to read :) I've said it over and over, but I am so glad to have found moms whose daughters are with mine.
Just got a phone call from my Krissy! I wasn't expecting to hear her voice for another two weeks, but she called! Said she is sad and depressed and wants to come home. Talk about breaking your heart! I told her it would be ok and time would pass and she would be home. I hate that she is so upset, but it was wonderful to hear her voice. I hope every mother with a child in Div 939 got a call tonight.
Kimmy-- I didn't get to talk long, but she thinks she knows who your daughter is. Kyle, I don't think I was pronouncing your daughter's last name right, but it sounded familiar to my daughter. I really hope that they all like each other LOL
You get 2 free drinks at the meet and greet:) Kyle M's Mom, order the room service pizza....it is awesome....
Some advice, hold the emotions in on the phone calls:) It makes them cry. Be strong! Write a list of questions that you have because the minute you hear their voice you will forget everything.
And watch for calls coming in from the 847 area code.. That's your Recruit!! I remember I felt like I could fly the day I was driving home and my cell phone rang with an 847 number. I answered so fast and just said "Andrew?" I was so glad to hear his voice!! I was afraid I'd cry. But, I'd been preparing myself that I'd probably get to talk to him that week so I wouldn't. And I didn't.. and we laughed and talked and .. IT WAS AWESOME!!
Maybe I'm just over thinking things, but now I'm worried about getting a phone call so early on. Did anyone else on here get a call way before you expected? Scares me that something is wrong, like maybe she isn't dealing very well at all. I know she gets homesick.
If you manage to find me on Facebook, just look in my friends. You'll find Kyle there. Facebook told me she didn't exist about 4 times before It finally found her.
