My son is PIR 3/4/11 Division 914.  He is in the choir and was going to perform at his first graduation last Friday 2/4/11.

My son was part of several choirs in High School, so that's probably why he got picked.  Didn't even know they had a choir!

  • himmiemom

My son is PIR 2/11/11.  Division 912
  • himmiemom

You don't have to have a "musical" background to be in a 900 division.  My Sailor is in 912 and has no musical background.  He got handpicked based on his ASVAB scores and High School grades.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Just found this group  My son is ship 2 Div 918   He plays the double bass but said in a letter that he was working behind the scenes in the next 3 PIR's  he also thought he was working behind the scenes for his own graduation but I think he is mistaken     In watching some of the past PIR's does the 900 div enter first or when it is his own PIR will he enter through the big doors with his div

  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

My son is in Div 914 and he will be performing at their first PIR today.  I thought he was performing last Friday, but I guess not.

SO glad to get that letter today!  He passed his PFA, and was looking forward to Marlinspike the next day.  He must have passed it because I haven't received any phone calls.

His plane doesn't leave till 3/8 for SC.  That's 3 days with him, if I change my tickets!  Oh, I can't wait!!

  • StaceyW (MM Nuke Girlfriend)

MichPad is your sailor going to SC to be a Nuke by chance? My boyfriend's PIR is 3/4 and we still haven't heard a confirmed date as far as him leaving for A School. The last we heard it was 2am-ish Saturday morning, but I know things tend to change quite often!
  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

StaceyW-yes, he's a nuke. I was thinking it would be early Sat am too, but another Mom said her son left on a Tues also. I will take that! I know what you mean about things changing, because of that I'm going to wait a little bit to change my tickets. At $100 a ticket to change (I have 5 of us coming to PIR) I don't want to have to do it more than once. I hope you hear from him soon to confirm. Let me know if he says the same thing. My son is in ship 02, div 914.
  • Susan

My daughter Jordan is on Ship 2 Division 919.  I haven't gotten a letter yet.  Still waiting.
  • StaceyW (MM Nuke Girlfriend)

Susan- What is your daugther's PIR?
  • Susan

    Her PIR is March 25th.
  • StaceyW (MM Nuke Girlfriend)

We didn't get our first letter until 1/21 and he left 1/3..first day at Great Lakes was 1/4. So, it takes a bit of time, but they're coming :)
  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

Susan-You should get one any day now.  Our first letter came on a Saturday, then they've been on Thursdays since then.  I hope you hear from her soon!
  • CrazyNavyMom(NukeET-GC,SC)

  • StaceyW (MM Nuke Girlfriend)

Hey CNM! My SR has the same PIR, and I am also anmember of the group for the PIR date :) It's an awesome group full of much onfo. For those of you with the PIR date 3/4 you should definitely join :)
  • StaceyW (MM Nuke Girlfriend)

Ok, so I'm having to post from my iPod touch, so forgive mistakes lol :)
  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

I just read on the RTC FB page that seating for PIR is first come, first serve, unless you are members of the 900 division, they get assigned seating!  Sweet!!  3/4/11
  • Sherri (mom of Kirsten)

Hi Susan, my daughter is in the same division as your daughter and I haven't received a letter or a phone call yet either. I am getting excited to get one though and am checking mail quickly every day. Let me know when you do receive something.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

What is the deal with assigned seating for someone in the 900 division?
  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

I'm not sure Angie, I asked the same question on PIR 3/4/11.  maybe someone there knows.
  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

We are leaving for graduation tomorrow after school! When I mentioned "PIR" in a letter our son wrote back, "Not sure what PIR is, assuming graduation." So here we moms are trying to use the lingo, and in his division at least they are saying "graduation"...lol.  Re: phone calls, we only got the 8 SECOND "I'm here" voice message, then a good 45 min call about 4+ weeks in. Today at 5 PM we finally got the "I'm a sailor" call for 40 min, then he was able to call after the pizza party for another half hour because they did so well on BS21. Keep reading comments on your PIR page, and just figure your recruit's div will probably be the last for whatever is on the timeline. Numerical order & all that! We did get great letters each Thursday, with detailed humorous (random) comments about everything!  He was a "body snatcher" at the first graduation they performed and will be a guard at a certain section this week, his own graduation. He told us where to sit, and said he would be allowed to talk to us, just couldn't hug him. So, I don't care that he isn't one of the marching sailors b/c I'll be able to look at him closeup!  He did say they practiced about 4 hours every Sat to get ready to perform, but it's a privilege to be able to serve at a ceremony like that, so we are really proud of his whole division, as well as the other 900's!

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Thank you for all your insight    It was very helpful   WhiteClay  I'm sure you will have a great time tomorrow   Im betting my SR may even be there with you!

  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

Shoot me a personal message of what his job is and I could try to snap a pic for you?? We are in Pittsburgh now, 5 hours down yesterday, 8 more to drive today! We have laptop with us so will check my mail when we get to IL.!
  • Sherri (mom of Kirsten)

Finally got a letter from my daughter yesterday and found out that she is carrying a flag in the ceremony. She is carrying the North Carolina flag. she said it was very cool what they are doing.

  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

7 days till PIR!! Can't wait!!  Div 914.  My son is in the choir and he's performed at two other graduations (there wasn't one today).  I asked him if he gets to perform at his own, and I haven't gotten a reply.  We got his last letter home today, and he didn't mention it again.  I would love to hear them, but not sure if that is possible.
  • TxLadyJane(ET Nuke Mom)

It is good that your SR got to preform at the last 2, did you get to see pics of him?

There are a lot of 900 divisions in this next PIR group, so I was wondering if my SR will be preforming at this next one, since I don't know if he performed at the last one. Congrats on being 1 week away!

  • MichPad(STA21 Officer Mom)

TxLady-YES!!  In the 2/18 choir pic he is front row, last man to the right of the microphone.  The PIR pic prior to that was just an eyebrow, so when I saw this one I yelped and pointed my phone to my husband.  (we were on vacation) He quickly got his laptop out and we saved the pic and emailed to people.  It was so good to see him after all this time!  Keep looking, you will have your chance!  Maybe he will be performing at my son's PIR on 3/4?  What does he do?
  • linda_d (Ship 2 Div 923)

I just got word today that my son is Ship 2 Div 923.  I did not know what that meant until another mom told me his is in a performing division, so I know it must be singing in the choir.  Can anyone else fill me in on this?  Thanks
  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

@ linda - actually he could be carrying a flag, playing an instrument/drumline, standing guarding at various places during graduation, helping the corpsman look for and help sailors who look like they'll faint...etc. He'll let you know what he's doing, but you might have an idea based on his experience. Make sure you get to graduation early, because depending on his role you might be able to see him before the ceremony!
  • TxLadyJane(ET Nuke Mom)

    MichPad:  My son plays trumpet

@linda yep what WhiteClay says is true

@WhiteClay - really how could we see him before graudation, just curious?

  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

@ TxLadyJane - my son was a rail guard, stationed up in the balcony. He let me know where he'd be for grad when he called after Battle Stations, and said we could talk to him but not hug him, lol. We got there EARLY (first 100 people or so) and saw him in the balcony, but had to wait a little till they let people up there b/c they wanted the lower stands to fill up first. While I was waiting semi-patiently to be let up the stairs, I talked to random female guards and drum line people who happened to be in my son's div.  One of them was my son's buddy who had put my daughter & sister's names on his list because he had two spots left.  How cool is that? I took a pic of several of them together which my son is thankful for now, because they all went separate directions after BC. I also asked the girl guarding the stairs (from the next 900 division) if she wanted me to send her pic to her mom, because she wasn't going to grad for a couple weeks. She seemed nervous about it, but I took the pic anyway and she whispered her mom's email to me & I sent it, and got an appreciative email back. The girl hadn't seen her mom in months because they lived in different states. Finally ran up the stairs but went the wrong direction, so could see him but couldn't get to him..AHHH!! The upside of that mistake is my "friend" Maria from our Div was sitting there with her son who was a guard, and I recognized her from her profile pic & waved my pink scarf & said "White Clay"!!! We were so happy to meet. I raced down the stairs and back up the correct stairs to my son, and I was able to sit on the bleacher near him and talk quietly for 40 min before the ceremony began. (I'm tearing up now just remembering how great that was!)  Also, before the ceremony begins they call all the 900 div grads down in front of the reviewing stand for pictures, so parents can snap as many as they want. I guess it's a perk for performing and not marching by like the other divs do. Sorry so long...hope that helps.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

WhiteClay  what a wonderful story  My son's PIR is 2/18 and he told me a week or so ago that he was the sideboy for his graduation
  • Jaimers

@WhiteClay -- thank you thank you....Stories like this keeps us moms going while anticipating to see our daus/sons.. I cant wait !! ... that must have been an amazing thing seeing your son and being able to talk to him before PIR ceremony started.

  • TxLadyJane(ET Nuke Mom)

This was put out on the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Facebook page today:

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Grad & Go refers to those recruits who are staying in Great Lakes and that is firm. We are in the process of correcting the RDCs who seem to believe that Grad & Go also refers to those recruits flying out of state on Saturday.

Even our trans...portation department no longer uses the term "Grad & Go." The confusion lies in the fact that a couple years recruits also flew out of state on Friday afternoons following the graduation ceremony. RTC stopped doing that a couple of years ago.

So, regardless if your recruit states he/she was told they are Grad & Go and are leaving Saturday, that is the incorrect term for them. They are a Saturday departure.

Other websites using the term Grad & Go for Saturday departures only add to the confusion.

So, once again, here is the official RTC definition as to what is a Grad & Go recruit: Recruits checking into A School at Great Lakes on the same day as graduation.

We need to help spread this around and post it on this site as much aw we can so we are not adding to the confusion!

  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

900 divisions do ROCK! Check out the naval Recruit page sometimes there are photos of the PIR. My son preformed as a Tuba for his and the week before he finished he was at the PIR and he was in a photo.

It is a great experience and time. Do ask your sailor in a letter where they are assigned for the PIR.  Yup no hands on the sailor til after they call LIBERTY!!

  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

@TXLadyJane - just to add to the discussion...our son graduated 2/18 and because he was staying at GL for A school, we were fully prepared for the "visit for 15 min, then wait while he checks in at A school across the street...possibly a 3-5 hr wait" scenario.  As it turned out, they just had to take their instruments, flags, drums etc back to their ship and then had liberty until 9 PM.  They stayed in their BC ship until the Wed after grad, when ALL of them departed for various A school locations. So, the moral of this story is...even "Grad & Go's" don't necessarily "go", and you may not find out until grad day!
  • Cheryl

WhiteClay-Are you talking about the Sailors staying until Wednesday after grad those who stayed in Great Lakes for A School?  Did that also pertain to those who fly out somewhere else?  Thanks!
  • TxLadyJane(ET Nuke Mom)

Ohio Girl yep I am a MOM thou, 917/PIR 3-11-11
  • WhiteClay Ship 2 Div 913

@Cheryl87 - his whole div stayed in the BC ship until Wed after grad. Some went to Texas, some to FL etc for A schools. Since they arrived around Dec 13 and left for A school Feb 23, they were together 10 weeks & 2 days!  Because they started BC before Christmas, they were P-days (processing days) for 2 weeks! My son said they were so happy to get their digital camo and OUT of those blue sweats!

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

This weeks picture on the RTC facebook page is of the 918 division shipboys!  My son is the tall one directly behind the RDC    What a surprise for me to see his picture there today   So proud and can't wait to see the bottom half of his face next Friday!!!!   If any of you are going to the PIR ceremony Friday and can take some more photos of him  I would be so greatful!
  • Sherri (mom of Kirsten)

Angie how cool to get this pic. They also posted a photo of the flag division, but I can't make it my daughter, She is carrying the North Carolina flag and I think she is towards the back of the group on the left. Hoping to see better picts of her from the next 2 graduations and then I can see her for myself on the 25th..
  • Navy Mom

Just got my first letter today from my son.He is ship 02 div 922.  He kind  of explained the 900 divisions.  I had no idea.  I'm so proud of him!  He graduates 4/15.  Any one else?
  • newmom60

Moms: My daughter was a member of Div. 945 PIR 9/24. Wow almost 6 months since her graduation. She completed A school (Pensacola), then more training (Virginia Beach) and now she is stationed in Whidbey Island, Washington. Keep a good journal of what goes on, save each one of the letters and believe it or not, enjoy this time, the best and most powerful navy of the world is shaping our love ones into sailors/sailorettes willing to defense our country!!!!!!
