Comment by Proud MilitaryMOM Ship 02 DIV946 just now Delete Comment My Son is in Ship 02/ DIV946. It is funny to say but he has ZERO musical talent but did score very well on his test. SO proud of him and after reading your posts I will be looking for pictures of him. I figure he will probably do the rifle drill. Not to sound bad but being from Idaho he has a lot of experience slinging a rifle. LOL!
Hey Proud - my son is also in that division - he doesn't have any musical talent - he can sing a little - that's it. I'm going to assume that he is going to walk around with a flag or something that doesn't take a lot of talent. Ha!
Hi My son's recruiter called me on tuesday and told me my SR is in Ship 02 Div 948, however I'm still waiting for the formal letter to confirm. I also was very confused at why he was placed in this Div due to the fact he has no marching or musical talent at all.....but very proud of him no matter what Div he is in.
donnac - my SR is in 942 Division and is carrying a gun and performed in last week's graduation, will perform in this weeks graduation and i can't wait to see him next week at his graduation - he really likes his Division. So he might be participating in that?
Ladies...prepare to be amazed ! They may not have "talent" but they end up doing a ceremony that will bring tears to your eyes. It is fantastic. My kid just PIRed and she has no talent either but somehow collectively they put on an awesome performance. Enjoy.
Hi Ladies, my daughter had PIR on 8-5-11, she was in a 900 division, and wondered why as she was not "talented". Talked to some Navy people and they told me that when SR's come to BC, they are screened for not just the talent, but leadership abilities and potential to do more than the regular recruit. She was asked to be on Ships Crew, which is a huge honor! But they do have double duty, they do all the regular BC things, plus perform at other PIR's and are given opportunities to show leadership skills. I still received several phone calls, and she wrote me letters every night to send out on Sunday. My biggest reward was that she was asked to be a 'greeter' during PIR!! So, when we came in the doors for the ceremony, the first person I saw was my baby girl, all grown up in her dress whites, looking AMAZING!! I got to hug her, talk to her, take pics with her!! During the ceremony, she carried her division flag to the center of the floor for the ceremony finale. Words can't describe what an amazing feeling PIR will give you, and the pride you will feel for your Sailor. Being in a 900 division is an enormous honor, and your SR will work hard to stay there, but when you see them, the joy and pride swells up inside you till you wanna burst :) Enjoy
I just found out that my brother is in div 948. I don't know too much about the 900 divisions, but what I have learned so far, makes me proud that my little brother was chosen!
When it gets to the week before PIR, and you get your "Im a Sailor" call, make sure and ask your sailor what their role is in the ceremony. 900 divisions don't have a line up section like other divisions, because they are performing. Find out what their placement in the ceremony, as you will need to pick a section to sit in, and they will able to tell you where, so you get the best view of them.
Hi Micaela, 900's have many opportunities for assignments during PIR. My daughter was not musical, nor in the rifle guard, but she was on 'Ships Crew', so she had leadership duties. For the non musical SR's trust me, there is still a lot to do. The 900 divisions don't have an area to line up like the other divisions do, as they all usually perform in some capacity, but in my daughters case, she got to be a door greeter, which to me was the BEST!! lol, So when we came into PIR, she was the first one I saw. They also had her carry the division flag during the ceremony. There is so much going on, when you get your "Im a Sailor" call,, ask your SR their role, and where is the best place to sit to see him perform.
Hi 04harleyswife, from what my daughter said, BS21 was one of the most exciting things she's done in her life! She was exhausted after, they are up for about 2 days, but she said it was a blast!! As far as the PFA, by the end of BC, the SR's are in pretty good shape, but if they don't pass, they will be set back for two weeks. So if your sailor has been struggling with that, make sure your plane ticket is refundable. Also, the weekend before PIR is Captains Cup, which is a competition that challenges divisions on physical tests. If you watch the facebook page for BC, they will tell you who wins. My daughter was excited that I knew the outcome :) It's a great time in the kids' lives right now :)
For anyone who rides and is in California....there is a ride this Sunday from Pt. Mugu to Pepperdine U. Here is some info.

My son is in the 900 division (945), and he is part of the ship staff. He guards the quarter deck, and also performs as a Side Boy during the graduation ceremonies. At first I thought he was going to be playing an instrument or singing or something, but then he explained there are many different rolls in this division. I'm a newbie, but hopefully this helps! Enjoy your journey...my Sailor graduates Friday!!
Staff division work two PIR's before their own and their own. They do honor guard, rifles, ushers, door guards, help with handicap. All the 900's do extra practice especially on Saturdays to learn all their duty and marching.
New to this group - just found out from the recruiter that my son is in the 900 division and although I don't have a lot of info about it, I'm gathering that its a fantastic opportunity!
@ Kathy - Thank you! I am so proud, and as I'm learning more about this division, I'm even more so! I'm guessing its because of his score, because he has no ROTC, limited college, no music talents (Other than he likes to listen to it LOL). He does have flag experience as an Eagle Scout so I guess that could be a factor as well. I have written him every day, but am waiting for his official address in the form letter just to be on the safe side :)
Hi DisneyDebi, I was in the same boat as you are in now seven short weeks ago. When I learned my SR was in a 900 Division I thought there must be some kind of mistake. He is not musically talented, no ROTC, etc. but he scored high on the ASVAB and he is a natural leader. I went straight to recruiter and asked him about 900's. He said it was an honor to be selected. So, Debi congrats to you and your SR. You can be especially proud that your SR is one of "the chosen ones".
@ThunderD - Holy mackerel - I just looked on your profile and your son finishes tomorrow!! Are you just going CRAZY? I would be on the moon! Thank you for the info and the congrats! Its funny, you see things in them, when they are young and before they set limitations for themselves, and its like full circle. While I was surprised, because of the whole musical thing, I'm not really now, because he is a leader and he's got that....thing...that natural ability to relate to everyone. And talking to other 900 moms is a blessing :)
ThunderD - we had our PIR last week (10/7) and it was amazing - my son was in 947! It is an honor, and they look amazing when you see them. The 900 div will come in earlier than the rest, so make sure you are in the drill hall prior to 7:15 and keep your eye on those big doors - when they open for the first time or two, your SR will be in there! We go lucky and were able to be standing right in front of the door when our son walked in. My hubster said 'Look! there he is' and I couldn't even pick him out because he looked so different! It's a fabulous experience.
Kathy, thanks for the tip. I had asked one of the Mom's whose son PIR'd on 10/7 to take photos of my son and she did! So I got to see him! Goosebumps all over!
Ladies, please visit the Ceremonial Guard for the USNavy, some of your Sailors my be comming to this group!!!
Enjoy, the 900 Division is sso special!!! Embrace, enjoy Graduation PIR and take lots of pictures!!! when you will see them after BC....you will see the change and they are "Outstanding".
Sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for today grads pics so I could see my girl perform and they wont be on until later or tomorrow, arghh, oh well patience I suppose.
GREENOAK: Something we all learn in BC...Hurry up and wait. In A school we learn that nothing is for sure until it happens. LOL...families in training! Hope when the pics are posted you get to see your girl. I would watch for my son in every picture that was posted he was 900 div. but was a greeter most of the time so not caught in any pic. Oh but how great to arrive at PIR and have him meet us at the door!!! Enjoy the journey!
Where on Facebook do they post pictures? Are they on individuals' wall -- or is there a site for the specific 900 Division? (sorry if this is a stupid question)
Go to U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command on Facebook. They post pictures of the different divisions and also there is a Tuesday quiz question posted and if you answer it right they will post your recruit's division picture. Your son can let you know what he is doing at PIR and they are in the PIR for the two weeks before he graduates and I got to see a great picture of my son holding a flag the week before he was due to graduate. It was wonderful and helped me make it during the last week before he graduated.
Your sailor will be able to tell you where the best place is to sit. If your sailor is holding a state flag, they divide in half and one group is on the left and one on the right side.
Wow, I think they march in and then are in the middle of the hall. Maybe it would be best to site on the left side ( that is left side as you are seated in the bleachers), but closer to the middle. They march in from the door to the left. If you sit on the right side, there is an area roped off for friends and family of the speakers and then you aren't really near the middle. Some people said there is a good view from the upper level, but with your son being in the performing division, you would be closer to him on lower level. Have a great time!!
Where are you staying in GL? Where is your son going after boot camp?
GnVA, Check out NalaHooYah's video from youtube on the PIR 10/21 group of this site. The second video shows the band and it looks like they perform at the right end of the hall. Maybe this video will give you a better perspective.
Thank you ProudMama & ThunderD'sMom. It is nice to have some insight before I get in there. I can imagine it's like being at a rock concert & people running for the best seats, lol. I will definitely check out the video.
