Hello all, I am new to this site. My son has chose the electrical part of the Seabee's,
the recruiter told my son to do the reservist and not the DEP, can anyone tell me what this means. We are going to try to sit down with the recruiter to find out more but not sure when he can meet with us. So any info you can share would be appreciated.

kbondy....DEP stands for delayed entry program. My son ran into the same problem. He wanted to go in as an active duty seabee, but it's my understanding from alot of reading on here that there are not many, if any, active duty slots available. So he enlisted as a reservist which made me very happy because I preferred he get a college degree first. But after more reading on this group and the seabee group it appears that seabees are in high demand and the likelihood of him being deployed is great even as a reservist. I thought he would go to bootcamp and A school, then come home, go to college full time and training once a month. He's in bootcamp now with a PIR date of 7/1/10 so I'm not really sure what the future holds. I'm not an expert but from what I've read it's not easy getting transferred from reserves to active duty. Good luck to you and your son.
After boot camp he will go to Gulfport MS for 12 weeks of training. This is called A School and the location of each sailor's school depends on the job they enlisted for. My son will be a builder with the seabee unit. After A school he will come back home and attend training one weekend a month. We won't know when or if he will be deployed until he gets the call.
Good Evening, My name is Judy and my sailor is starting his 5th week at corpsman school in Great Lakes and he is signed on as a reservists. I am looking for moms who would like to share information. Thank You...
Well, Tristan is older then most at 25 yrs.old. He felt that the reservists would be the way to go for him because he still wants to finish is degree in Criminal Justice. He is hanging in there, starting his 5 week in A school with an average of 84%. I think the singing in bonus was a deal breaker for him.
Life as a Reservist differs so. My son originally was going full support (active). Then changed his mind and contract before he left for GL RTC. So he started as a Reservist, enrolled back in college for the fall semester, realized that he will not be home much as a Reservist - so he has been encouraged and agreed to go full time support. His process started...I am stating this as you NEVER know how events will change their game plan. Needless to say, I am saving ALL of my leave time to be able to visit him when and wherever. : ) ~ kk
Good Morning Moms, I just love all the new moms on hear asking questions about reservists. My son is feeling that after corpsman A school he wants to go to work for the state of CA. and work the border keeping illegals out!! To keep him on his toes encase or when he is deployed. His gf wants to work along side him when he finishes his school at Camp Pendelton, we call her Miss Katie...she has a Criminal Justice degree. At least they have a goal witch will drive them to finish on schedule.
Yea, your right C school bound at Camp Pendelton. This week 5, has proved to be really challenging for Tristan. I'm hoping and praying that he passes his test...with fingers crossed too! lol I'm Sooon anxious to hear I feel like tossing cookies!! How is Kevin holding up?!
hopeful-in-PC (ship 14 div 276) BS21 is all about using the skills you have been taught, working in a team to handle all challenges, and stay awake! Good team players help others proceed through BS21. I totally respect the RDCs that instill the importance of working as a team. Some moms have said, "They just have to stay awake!" I disagree. That is just a portion of the task at hand. You can expect your call anytime on Wednesday. Their call time depends on the RDCs' best time decision. My son's call came at 1014 (Eastern Standard). : ) ~ kk
hopeful-in-PC, He passed with a 80% score. hurrah!!
Good job on 2nd place for the Captains cup and for the division working so well together!! Navy up!! hurrah So happy for All the Sr's on their phone call, Isn't the reward so fine...
Hi all my boyfriend will be graduating boot camp next Friday the 20th and then going to A school there in GL but he is in the reserves. I do not know much...really nothing...about the reserves so I hope to learn from ya'll or with ya'll. :)
Hi all. My sailor is in the Navy Reserves on active duty. What is the difference between this and being in the reg. Navy? He has went to bootcamp and right now is in Pensacola doing his prereq classes for A School. Then does he just go on to his duty station and spend his time? I am so confused. His recuiter told him that he would be straight land based, but Maybe that was just a lie. My sailors rate is AE. His PIR was 07/23. He is just waiting to class up for his A school, anything that anyone can tell me would be great. Thanks
Bobbi Ray, Hi...yes, I will tell you what I know. My cub is on his last week of testing for A school, then clinicals for 2 weeks. Although my sailor really wanted to be green(a marine) it wasn't in the cards due to a tattoo outline of a Iron cross which could be mistaken for a swastika on long portion of his side which he had it put there because he liked, not that he was ever in any clan. I have a beautiful looking (only)son who has never been in trouble with any authorities "he is a Good son" and I would not trade him for the World...okay, enough. I'm just sooohappy that he is on the down hill of these tests with a 90% average. But what I know is that he signed a 6 yr. contract with the Navy. the benefit is the money award is just the icing on the cake.He will receive it in increments throughout the contract.
He doesn't know where he will be stationed...back & forth on weather he will do FMTB at CP or CL, we are hoping that he will come home to Cali...that would make him 4 hrs. away from home, but he feels left out because everyone in his class picked orders(enlist men) that's the difference and he has yet to receive his orders. That is a real big difference he doesn't have the option to pick!! and Reservist are the first to go to war. But how well he scores on his testing phase is a real good inclination weather his contract would go enlistmen or not or go to C school or not.
Pretty much that's all that I have been able to understand about the Reservists...Sorry about the book...I'm just sooo Proud of him. It's been a long haul to get to this point in his journey...I only wish now that he has done so good in this field that he would continue...but he still wants to become an officer of the law...as was his Papa...35 yr.career in law enforcement...
My son is still waiting to class up for A school. Do you mean he doesnt have any pick at all on where he is going? My son didn't get a money award..He is on active duty, is that what your son is on to? or he wants to go active duty? What is fmtb? what is cp or cl? how long has your son been in for? Where was his A school at?
Judy-Chris' mom- is your son on active duty? Navy recruiter said my son will be on active duty until his time is up or he reenlists.Just like a regular Navy person..
My sailors rate is AE. He is in Pensacola for A school now. He has already done his prereq. classes for his rate, he is in phase 3, just waiting to class up.
Rus is in the Navy reserves-on active duty-full time support, he won't do weekends and the 2 weeks a year for the reserves..Rus will have to stay and do his 4 years.
This is what I get confused on. I guess I will just have to wait to see what happens. Thanks alot for the info.
Sorry I don't want to confuse anybody. I am confused enough for everybody. haha
They call it Full time support. I think it is something kind of new, but not forsure. I don't know why they call it reserve when he is full time active duty. They explained it(recruiter) that his pay would come out of the navy reserves pay fund. he said that would be the only difference.
My son is in bc now at GL. He will be going to A school for MAA after bc and then will be reserve while in college. Can anyone share any experiences about reserve duty for MAA on the weekends. What kind of work will he be doing? Would it be local assignment or would he be traveling out of state on his weekend duty? Could he do more than one weekend per month? Just looking for general info. I know that are very few hard and fast rules. Just sharing your recruit's experience would be helpful. Thanks
Hi, I just joined the group. My son right now is in BC in GL. He joined up for the reserves. I was just reading comments and it seems like when he is finished A School he can be deployed??
I don't know if this group is still active. Just wondering if anyone has a Sailor (PIR'd 11/12/2010) in Port Hueneme, CA for 'A' School? My husband arrived there yesterday and I'm wondering what I can expect and/or if I can connect with anyone out there that has a Sailor there too? Thanks!
Hey Judy, I do have a question for ya...My Corpsman is in FMTB at Camp Pendleton,CA. I'm wondering with the war winding down, have the reservist really being deployed?!
Judy, So I'm trying to follow you with the Military Police, your Corpsman is also Police(Military), which came first...the reason I ask is that Tristan is 25 yrs. old and went into the Navy as a Reservists because in his words were "If I can make it through boot camp and A school then I will feel more confident about making it through Police Academy", I know what your thinking "Huh", it's just that he wants to follow in my fathers footsteps(Grandpa is retired 30 years with the police force), Tristan has a AA degree in Criminal Justice so he thinks that he would rather set himself up Not to fail, does that make sense?! Your son also has followed the beat to his own drummer so-to-speak!
Judy, Well good for your Sailor; that he has a goal and a plan for that goal! I'm sure that he will due Great in his endeavor and with positive support behind him will keep his goal alive!! Good luck to your Sailor!!
Judy, I just went to you're profile page and Boy!! What a good looking Sailor you have!! You all look so happy and the care for your sailor really shows. Yes, my father is already real proud of Tristan. Right out of high school, T didn't know what he wanted to be, he really didn't want to go to collage right away so he was asked by a friend to try plumbing, so after 2 years he took the plumbers test and became certified, then he went to a job where the plumbing was under a house; that's when he became claustrophobic he being 6'4" so he decided, he was ready to go back to school but racked up sum debit and car pymt. so he started school on line and his first two semesters he made Honor Roll & Dean's list all the while working as a night manager for a local grocery chain store. It took T awhile to jump off his perch but he did it!! Naugh, I'm not a proud Mom. LOL
So, I see you all are from NJ somewhere...I have not been to too many Eastern States, I'm from California...born and raised but I have traveled when the kids were young.
Good Morning to All, Here's wishing everyone a very "Thankful" Thanksgiving!!
Jackie, That is such a cool picture of your cub! He looks like he has made so new friends, The young boys look like they are happy they have your Corpsman to look out after them...Great Job!!
My T, Is wondering how, when, and where he will be stationed and deployed. He is just trying to finish up! I have a sensitive question for ya, do you think I could ask you in private?!
Happy Sunday Judy. I wanted to congratulate Your cub for the race he was in yesterday...Great Job, jumping into cold water 15 feet of the ground this time of year is brave!!
Judy, Who put the obstacle course together, was it on military grounds. That's exceptional to make that much money for a charity and for a Great cause!!
Is there any of you ladies have sailors in the Navy reserves on full time support or a program called TAR? My sailor is Navy Reserves FTS, so someone said he wouldn't get a pick of duty stations- He would go to a Navy Reserve Training Base. Does anybody know where these are at? or have any info about FTS. Anything you could tell me would be awesome. My sailor is an AE, grad PIR in July, He is in pensacola for his A school roght now and will grad. on Jan. 16th. Thank You
Bobby Ray, My son is a Corpsman at Camp Pendleton CA. in FTMB training. No I do not know or have not heard of TAR but sure would love to find out! So, please post when you find out!!
TAR is some kind of program where the sailors are land based. They never go to a ship unless they want to. Thats what we were told by Navy Recruiter.haha. The program was called something else back in the day but now they call it TAR. I maybe wrong but this is what I was told.
Judy -Chris' Mom- Thank you so much for taking the time and finding the information for me. It seems like what the Navy Recruiter told us is just about right.
I am just excited for his Navy Life after school to start.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
Judy-Chris'Mom, thank you so much for your warm welcome. I am looking forward to the graduation but to facing the cold in GL. I am going to be the Kleenex Queen at his PIR. My son's job is PS, because he is FTS, we don't know where he will be stationed, as a Reservist, chances are, he would have been stationed in our home state, as a full time Reservist, he may choose from a variety of locations. I understand he gets to choose his location at the end of "A" school. Yes, I am definitely counting down. I sit at home with my cell phone on one side of me and the house phone on the other and constantly on the lap top on Navy For Moms and Navy FB and numerous other sites. Because of the Christmas holiday, he is set to PIR on Wed. 12/22 so I had to remember to tell him that we will be flying 12/21 and on cell phone for the "Official Call". Thank you again, and I will send out a major blast from my cell phone when I get the call of my life. Kim
sacred's mom ship03 div 025- My sailor is also Navy Reserve FTS, there are starting to be a few of us now that are on here. Our recruiter never really explained to us about FTS and what happens after A school. It sounds like you know alot about it could you give me info about it. My sailor grads A school in Pensacola on the 16th of Jan., but being FTS, they didnt let him choose his dream places to be stationed. Do you have and info on where these FTS sailors go? What bases could they have their duty at? My sailor said that they are sent where they are needed, our home state is Illinois. Also did you hear that FTS sailors will train other reservest that in for weekends? Please let me pick your brain..
