Battlebuddy = Japan is a great opportunity for your son. My co-worker (ex Navy) was over there for quite some time and loved it. It will be a great experience for him, he will get to experience another culture and see more of the world. I bet he will have a great time!! Don't forget, that we are all here to support you!!
battlebuddy ... I know that you're feeling sad for you and happy for your son at the same time ... conflicting feelings are often worse than just being able to be 100% sad and get it over with. I think it's why boot camp is so hard ... because we go from sad to proud back to scared to worried ....
However, you mustn't think that him putting Japan as his 2nd choice is "getting as far away as he can". I'm certain that was not his motivation. Rather, it's an opportunity to see the world --- to see things at 20 that many of us have never (and probably WILL never) see in all our lives ...
my son just started school yesterday MM .he said he listed Japan, San Diego and Guam for his first 3 choices... so yes proud, scared as all get out too... he talked of dangers but not to scare me.. called me last night cause he knew i was feeling down.. never told him real reason.. looking for some brother division's family.. to befriend.. Has anybody received the dvd (photo pak) of PIR? Ours ordered and paid for it but has not arrived. He got the pictures on PIR. Nothing else.Tried calling the number on receipt and gotten no answer. I have tried for the past 3 hours-847-578-6289. Nobody is answering on the so-called 'Hot Line'....It is getting frustrating with no answer. I left message 2 hours ago and not heard anything yet.
eaglemom....I was told the same thing that Life is Peachy said when I ordered the DVD....it will arrive in 5-6 weeks.
I just ordered another $142 worth of photos this morning! (Everybody in our families want one!) I wish they would have given us more photos and less frames with Package A.....I think most will put the picture in a "real" frame anyway. Oh well, its definitely worth the money :-)
LOOKING FOR HALF PINT AND HS. Tried sending you both an email with photos from the Meet & Greet, but your email address was rejected. Please PM me with your personal email address. THANKS!
Sent my son his first care package last Wednesday and he got it yesterday. My mom also sent him one too. Mine had stuff from home that he wanted and some "extras" that only mom would put in a box. My mom sent him a box full of snacks and quick meals for him and his roommate. It felt so good to be able to send one off to him. He said he finally got his security badge yesterday and headed off to the mail room where the packages were waiting for him. He said it was the best day ever!!!
Been awhile since I have posted here. My Sailor is doing good but is on hold and waiting to class up. He is homesick and cant wait to get to phase 2. Patience Grasshopper. Overall he is good just bored.
I wanted to let those of you know that I started a new group.
PIR 2/11/11 TO PENSACOLA CORRY STATION for those of you who have a Sailor at Corry Station right now. Would be fun to chat about A school and possibly find out if our sailors know each other.
Battlebuddy-I have met several moms in my area that have boys in Japan, and they LOVE it, one mom is even planning a trip there. They too had mixed feelings when the orders came through, but they are feeling much better now that their sons are happy, hang in there!
Ditto BB - my co-worker (ex Navy) spent time in Japan and I actually spoke to him about it today. He said it was THE BEST! He is not one for sharing details about the Navy, but I try to pry info from him as I can. He agreed that his mom was probably a basket case during those times, so he understands. He assured me that Japan was great though.
You know I was feeling a little down when my son told me 2 minutes after graduation that he was going to have to leave unexpectedly @ 2:00 am for a school. I was disappointed for us but especially for him. I went to bed that night and said a prayer that something would happen and we would get to spend more time with him. Well, we got a call from him at 8:00 that morning saying his plane was not leaving til 5:00 that evening and could we come to the airport and spend the day? We were so happy. While we were sitting in the terminal a lady came up to him and said "Thank You Sailor" my son looked surprised as if he was thinking "for what?" it was the first time someone a complete stranger had done that. It really touched him & us. Gave true meaning to the graduation ceremony and the sacrifices our men in all branches of the service are making for us. We are so proud!
So what spurred the sudden interest in Japan, our son has been subs, subs, subs since signing up for Nukes a year ago, and now maybe Carriers "because I could be stationed in Japan". Must be some news or common knowledge going around right now...
LOL My son put Japan as his first choice, and sub bases in the Pacific as his other choices. I think he has a deep interest in Japanese girls culture and wants to see the girls world.
Hi everyone.. I wanted to let you all know I attended my first "Blue Star Mom" meeting! It was awesome.. they do so much in the community for our military men and women, the care packages go all over and automatically your son/daughter, spouse will get one! We are going to help a wounded warrior in our community in a few weeks. The moms there were great and some have boys in Afghanistan right now and told stories that were just heart breaking and some that were so joyous! I highly recommend if you can, to find your local chapter and get involved. We are now part of the military and need to do what we can to help them as much as we can. There are more and more people against the military (Westboro church), that we have to be diligent in showing our support and helping in every way we can. I recruited 2 of my sons friends moms, who are Marine moms, and 1 off the N4M NM group.
Mama walrus great meeting you too- you are right about supporting our troops - I am going to look up our chapter for the blue star moms. William thanks for the laugh!
Hi all - I just finished speaking with a Blue Star Mom and she shared some advice with me, that I want to share with all of you. She said if your Sailor is going over seas, and you don't have a passport, you should get one now and keep it handy. Don't lock it up in a safe deposit box or anything like that where you can't get to it because the bank is closed. She said the reason is, if your Sailor gets injured and you need to get to him/her in a hurry, you will need a passport. She stated this is something most people don't really think about so it is the first piece of advice that she shares.
According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips on the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done.
She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine all the yawns from the little princesses).
To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.
Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
There are teachers. . . and then there are educators.
My home town had protesters today.... makes me ill. Marine Cpl. Johnathan Taylor memorial service was held today in Citrus County, FL. He was only 23, KIA during his 4th war tour... what a BRAVE young man!! People are pathetic! I want to share this link with you. Protesters do not deserve the attention they are getting, Patriot Guard Riders do!!! I plan to join their organization and help and I hope others will as well. Love and hugs to all our Military!!!
This protester thing is really getting out of hand! It makes me sick that they would do this to our military! I agree that the protesters should not get any attention at all - I am going to look into the Patriot Guard Riders - Thanks for sending the site.
My son got to come home!! It was a whirlwind 24 hour visit but oh my gosh it was good to see him and he was soooo happy to be here. Funny to see him back in civilian clothes which he was the most happy about. Met a nice sailor who has been away from home since Oct. Wish I knew more of these who I could invite here for a home cooked meal...he was so happy to eat!!! My son got his first tattoo and I am glad he was with his dad to do that. It is such a special one that I have to admit, even I like it and I am not a tattoo fan at all. He is hoping to come home in 2 more weekends to celebrate my and my daughter's birthday, which would be awesome. It was great to see him happy as he had sounded so down the last couple of quick phone calls!! I am so lucky!!!
Talked to my son tonight and he is still waiting to class up. He has been at Corry Station for almost 3 weeks and doesn't know when he will class up. He said he is more than ready to start. He told me this evening that RTC is changing how long recruits will stay in bootcamp. 14 weeks instead of 8 weeks due to combat training. Not sure when this will take into effect. Has anyone else heard of this?
Hi everyone! It's been quiet over here.... Hope all is well and all your Sailor's are adjusting to their new way of life. Can you believe 4 weeks have passed already!!
So tomorrow will be one month since our Sailors graduated from BC. I can't believe it had gone by so fast. I still miss my son....I am ready for a visit. :)
Time sure flies!!! Yes, I look back to how stressed I was, especially during the first half of BC, and now I laugh at myself! I miss my boy a lot and even though he can communicate with me freely now, well there isn't a whole lot of time for that. So I have to have patience and accept this new Navy life.
BB = I miss the letters too. It was great to receive them and I wish they still wrote home at least once per week. Even an email would be great! haha I actually miss writing him too, even though it was difficult to keep having conversations with a piece of paper. I'll cherish the memories of BC forever!!
WOW!!! It will be a month already tomorrow??? Hard to believe how fast this last month has gone.
I got great news from my son tonight. He classes up 3/14!!!! YEAH!!!! Finally. He has been starting to get a little restless and more than ready to get going.
Bad storm in Pensacola yesterday. Black clouds and funnel clouds hanging overhead. He said he got stuck in the building he was working in for 7 hrs!!!! At least he was safe.
himmiemom: increasing navy boot camp to 14 weeks???
Interesting, you raised my interest, went looking, found nothing.
I did read several months ago that all Navy Medics were adding the 14 week Marine corps training to their training regime so they would all be qualified to be combat medics, but that does not sound like the same thing.
I have not heard anything about increasing boot camp to 14 weeks either. I am not sure what the "combat training" would be either. For the small percentage of sailors (fewer than 15,000) who are sent to Afghanistan or Iraq as "individual augmentees" they do receive infantry training, but it is a separate school not boot camp.
I have heard of them increasing the boot camp but also I think it was mentioned on the FB page and RTC said no that they weren't ? I might be imagining things but I think thats what RTC said. It was awhile back so I cannot be for sure.
I found out about the 14 weeks of boot camp from my son's room mate. The "combat" training supposedly is just in case of this whole Korea thing going on overseas.
