$100 is the Montgomery GI Bill as opposed to the 9/11 GI bill, it lasts for one year, then it is over.
It is in addition to the 9/11 GI Bill which is earned by service alone. No contributions for the 9/11 GI Bill. It is optional, but my son opted for it as well. His dad thought it was redundant, but my son pointed out that it was only $1,200 for thousands more in education benefits over and above the 911 GI Bill. His dad agreed it was a good choice.
Hi NF Mom, What is the NAF/XCHNGE DEBT? The amount is $617.19. It was deducted twice in his pay while he was in BC. It looks like clothes. But doesn't Navy give cloth allowance of ~ $1500?
MissYu, the NAF/XCHNGE DEBT is his uniform allowance. I had the same question about my husband's LES.
The Meal Deduction is the amount they take out for his meals at the galley.
As stated below, the Mid Month Pay is how much he is getting on his paycheck on the 15th and the MGIB is toward the GI Bill.
If you Google "How to read a LES" or something similar to that, you'll find websites with explanations. I had to go to a few of them to get all the codes I was looking for.
Oh, I just noticed that he was charged twice. I would find out about that. My husband was only charged once. I think half came out the first paycheck and then half out of the second paycheck. Not entirely sure about that though...
MissYu2, thank-you for asking these questions. It actually sounds like it might be appropriate to compare the amounts deducted during Boot Camp to see if there are discrepancies between Sailors who should have had the exact same amounts deducted for clothes and issued script. Although the gross might be different based on when during the month they went on active duty, and their enlistment pay grade, it would seem sailors in the same division should have the exact same clothing deductions. Also Sailor for the same PIR should be very close.
MissYu2, my husband researched deductions during boot camp and found conflicting information about the historical amount. It appeared to vary month to month. But the information agreed as to the reason for the deductions. Each Seaman Recruit was issued script which could be used like cash at the exchange at Boot Camp and the value of this script was part of the deduction. Each Seamen Recruit was also expected to buy from the Navy Exchange using both payroll deductions ( and some of the script) additional clothing items. Script could also used to buy toiletries, pictures and the like. As my husband put it there was mandatory clothing the Navy paid for and additional optional-mandatory clothing the Seaman Recruit had to have but the Navy would not pay for. The expensive work-out clothes designed by an Admiral was one such optional-mandatory clothing purchase.
Just found out that my son will reach Phase 2 either this weekend or next weekend. I am having mixed emotions about this. He is in Pensacola and it makes me nervous that something will happen to him. He has to have a liberty buddy and has to be back on base at night. When he first arrived there was someone killed right outside of the base. Do they wear civilian clothes or their uniform when they are in Phase 2?
Himmiemom- Pcola is really a safe place. There is crime of course but I wouldn't compare it to other bases around the country. Of course we are talking about your son (and my daughter). Here is where the trust gets a bit difficult.
just heard from my son. He got his orders today....Japan. Choking back my tears, I asked him how he felt about it. He said at first he was a little disappointed as he hoped for SanDiego. But he said he heard great things about Japan so he was excited and thought it would be an awesome experience. He asked me if I was OK. And I choked again fighting tears telling him I too thought it would be an amazing experience for him. It's so far :-(
His A school is done mid april. His orders are for mid may. But he says he could be on hold for months before he actually goes. His dad, brother, grandfather are all excited for him. I guess it's my heart that hasn't quite caught up to the feeling of excitement....but it will.
cathyo......I just read a article on those sailors waiting for deployment to Japan are on hold till further notice due to the radiation. He may be staying at whatever base he is right now holding till Japan is safe to go to.
missyu2 - my son is Josh. At the time he couldn't remember the name of the base. he was in between classes when he called and he said he'd call later. He mentioned he would be on a LHD carrier. One of the moms on the damage control site told me that her daughter is on the USS Essex which is an LHC carrier which is in Sasebo...so I am thinking that is where he is going. When is your son going?
My son had orders to Sasebo USS Harpers Ferry. LSD 49. He graduated A school Wednesday. Was coming home for 20 days, but was put on Hold. He did receive a 5 day leave and is home now. :) Will have to report back to his A school till he receives new orders or they allow them back into Japan. I am thinking it will be a while before any new military Navy/Marines/Air Force/Army.... will be sent over there for a new duty station.
Nick classed up last friday, his school is 8 weeks long. do any of you know if that means 8 weeks starting friday including weekends? because he says it does but one thing about nick is so far i have known more about what he will be doing then he does! lol im just trying to figure out about when he should be home. :)
I am so happy some of you are getting your Sailors home. Mine is still at RTC on med hold...now he is waiting for a waiver to move on to Groton. He will have 8 weeks of BESS then off to A school somewhere for a while. So I will have to go to him wherever he goes, because he wont get to come home until after A school. So once again waiting patiently or at least trying to be patient
It is great to hear that some of the Sailors are coming home for a short visit. I won't get to have mine home till after August 30 when he graduates from school. His schooling is 6 months and he just started last Monday. I am hoping to get to Pensacola to see him before than.
He took his first test today and scored an 80 which he said is real good considering the test was real hard. Phase 2 hopefully starts this weekend only if he gets his papers signed which he didn't do last week.
That is nice everybody my son will not be home until end of August when he graduates A school but I will be visiting him there in May. A school is 6 months then he has another year of schools after that haha.
BESS is Basic Enlisted Submarine School by the way
I am with mamawalrus no Idea when my son will actually get to come home for a visit but i am going to see him this weekend before he hopefully goes on to the next step.
mama....I havent made any plans to go back to Great Lakes, because we are just waiting on the waiver, and once they get the waiver, they are sent to their destination....so I have just been waiting...sometimes the waiver is done immediately and some have been waiting for months....I dont want to schedule a trip and then him have to leave while I am there, or before I get there....but I miss him dearly....got my PIR dvd in today, it seems like there were some items deleted, but I cried all over again...I am sure there are many more years of crying, but because I am so PROUD
My son finished A School today. He graduates on Friday. He got honor grad which earned him a promotion and a recommendation to advance to E4 in 4 to 10 months. So proud of him. Now the waiting starts all over again (because all orders to Japan are on hold) and he can't take leave until they release the hold or give him new orders.
tacky... I understand! that is so hard..I am thinking of going back to GL next month but he may be heading to SD in May so its do I go now or wait,, I know is SD he will be so busy.... I just want to hang out you know....
I got my DVD today which is his Birthday too !!!!!! Happy Birthday to my son...
PIR was 2/11/11 so the 11 + 11 is 22,, which is todays date,, his BIRTHDAY... hahahahhahaa
Sorry I love doing number games on dates...
Yes they did cut stuff out...I only say my son when they marched in at the beginnning.. I wish they would of scanned the divisions more during the video.
TC....I agree. I dropped my Video right before PIR started so I am thankful I at least have this BUT we were the last division to the right and did not see much of them during video and I dont like that they cut stuff out...I thought it would be the entire PIR and they would scan the divisions more.
hi MissYu2 - I forget, was your son at A school in San Diego? So if his orders are cancelled, does he stay in San Diego until he is given new orders some place else? My son is in great lakes at a school and hasn't heard any news on his verbal order to Sasebo. His school isn't over until mid April. Just curious how it all works.
Hi Everyone! Just checking in.....my daughter STILL has not started A-school. She is at GL in ATT. She hopes she starts soon! She just reached Phase 2.....Arwen was right about GL having the strictest "Phase" schedule. (Which was okay with me.) I just sent out "civies" to her this week. I received a low fare alert for Phila-Chicago, so we booked flights for Easter weekend! I can't wait to visit GL again!
Was anyone's Sailor in Ship 11 Div 66? My mom was in charge of my camera and didn't get ANY pics of my husband in formation! She took a bunch of some random guy who looked a *little* like my husband though, lol!
@Cathyo ship 11 div 063, my son's new order is San Diego. But his ship is in Japan now for the relief effort. So he is stayng tin San Diego now on TPU (Transient Processing Unit). I heard that Navy might fly him to his ship in Japan on a military plane.
