Life is Peachy, I will definitely order the PIR shirts when the time comes. Glad you like yours.
You're right about the quality of shirts from Cafe Press. I did expect the quality to be better for the price they charge. But the shirts do look nice. I wore mine to Mystic this past weekend.
Angel - my Sailor just graduated this past Friday. What an awesome experience!! Take binoculars and try to sit down at the bottom. We drove what was supposed to have been a 7 hour drive (was actually about 8 1/2 - 9 hours because of traffic in Chicago) and stayed at Ramada Inn. Surprisingly the beds were extremely comfortable and the rooms were clean. We only got to spend Friday when our son and then the time at the airport. It was all so worth it!! Good luck to you and your daughter!!
PIR was awesome 5/6!! :) Somethings I'll pass along...
Having a shuttle to PIR was sooooo nice.. drops you right at the gate. 12 div. were graduating so the line into grad. was looooooong. We got right in line and were one of the first to get in. We had 9 people with us, so getting there and finding seats for all of us, was very nice. They had to open up the end bleachers to fit everyone. had we gotten there any later, we would have had a hard time finding seats for us all. If you'd like the number for Sarge, really has alot of info and gives very good rates for shuttle, let me know.
The Holiday Inn Express in Waukegan was VERY NICE!! Also not as crowded as some of the other hotels, so the pool and other things we kinda had to ourselves. Not sure why more don't stay there, it is a new hotel and the beds were amazing. They give you a navy grad. discounted rate. Super helpful for directions and there is a plaza near there with several restaurants and Walmart and such. VERY nice and about 15 min. to GL.
For those flying out on Sat. the easiest place to meet up with them at the airport is the USO, they have to sign in there when they get to the airport. Our sailor wasn't sure of her flight info (she didn't pay attention to it) and so we were a little nervous we wouldn't find her at O'Hare. ( ALOT of parents were in the same boat, looking for their sailor) But, if you arrange to meet them at the USO at a certain time, it will save looking for them and the confusion of being at such a big airport. We did get passes to go pass security, so have your sailor go up to the agent and ask for a pass. They were quite accomodating. :)
We still have awhile before grad, since he doesn't go in until September 6, but I'd still like the number for Sarge...have heard he is great. I like to plan in advance:)
jenn, thank you for the info on the USO, i will be telling my new sailor to meet us there.
greatlakesbb- hopefully i'll get to see you at meet & greet thurs 5-12! would love to talk to you about the tour bus for sat. after our daughter leaves.
I know at Ohare the USO was at Terminal 2.. I assume that at Midway/Milwak.. they'd have to report to the USO also.. I was so nervous we wouldn't find her at Ohare... but amazingly, (thank God) we pulled into Ohare right after the buses from RTC.. I said.. "Those are the buses"!! And I found her coming off the bus and she told me to meet her by the USO! :)
TOMORROW!!!!! Can't wait to see my son! We're driving to Chicago - Praying for safe travels and wishing it won't rain too much. Can't wait to see many of you at the Meet and Greet! Blessings to all who will be at PIR 5/13!
Congrats Mama!! Hope you're packing the good weather. Hug your sailor form us N4M folks. Enjoy your day! Did ya pack the pass, the id's the insurance cards? and comfortable shoes? those are for walking in Chicago.
LMC - Check, Check and Check!! Even remembered to make his favorite chocolate chip cookies! Hot out of the oven this morning. Granted, he won't get them till tomorrow, but if I keep them in a warm car........they'll kinda have "that fresh out of the oven" taste! He won't care - anything from home will taste good!
About the USO: My Sailor has found the support services provided by the USO to be so very important for making his life easy... and there is an idea that I have heard floating around which seems to be worthwhile...
Are you familiar with the Pennies for UNICEF campaign, promoted annually during Halloween? Or the March of Dimes campaign that was for a long time linked to Easter...??? Well, the idea that came up with some of us the other day is to make a similar 'service' association between the USO and the 4th of July.
The overarching objective is 3-fold: To promote a general awareness of how vital the USO is to all men and women in every branch of the military; To support the efforts of the USO with some sort of (simple) 'fundraising' project (ideally tied to traditional 4th of July activities so that people don't have to 'go out of their way' to participate, but can get involved by doing whatever they normally do... only with one added USO element <smile>); To show ALL our military men and women how very much we appreciate what they are doing for us by supporting an organization that does so very much for them.
Anyway, like I said, it is an idea that seems worth sharing... and I for one would love to participate with others all across the nation in a show of solidarity like this. How about you? (((hugs)))
Had an awesome time at PIR 5/13! Our time with our new Sailor was very short - only about 6 hours on Friday and he flew out this morning at 6 a.m.! We were able to spend about 1 1/2 hrs. at the airport this morning - BTW that wasn't enough time! sigh
When I'm not so tired, I'll post more. Just wanted you all to know how excited and proud we are of our new Sailor and all of the nearly 600 Graduates!
Mama C - that you had a great time. My Sailor graduated 4/29. We were able to spend about the same time with our son. I agree...not enough time. But at least I get to talk to him a LOT more than when he was at boot camp. I get to talk to him every day...LOVE IT!!!!
ladies, just got back from PIR for 5-13 our sailor was a grad & go on sat. to florida, she went to check in at the USO, and they said she did not need to unless she was staying there. we had to go outside of the airport & go back thru security because you cannot go back out the way you came in. just an fyi.
Hi Everyone! My daughter went to MEPS today for the 2nd time this month to select her rating. She did select a rate. It wasn't what she wanted but she did not want to wait until next month to try again. She wants to join the NAVY asap! So she selected "IC" (Interior Communications Electrician). We don't know too much about "IC",so we have been doing some reading on the duties. She did state on her paperwork that if "IS" or "OS" comes up she wants to switch her rate. So as it stands she will be shipping to boot camp Sept. 21. She is excited because she swore in, signed her contract and best of all, she has a ship out date! Besides who knows what can happen now till Sept. So my girl is officially a "Depper". She was also excited about ringing the bell at MEPS after she swore in and signed the contract :o) I am very proud and excited for her.
Wanda G - That is exciting! My son DEP'd in Oct. 2009 and FINALLY shipped 3/16/11! Long time, but he got what he wanted. We couldn't be prouder of him - just came back from PIR 5/13. Awesome Ceremony!
Went to the Meet and Greet for PIR 5/13. The one piece of advice I can give any of you ladies/men, is to use your N4M's name along with your real name for your Name Tag. People recognize my User Name over my Real Name first. It made it much easier to connect.
Even though my sailor is now in A School, I'll still be visiting this group. I love to hear PIR stories and hopefully stay in touch with many of you. Good Luck to all you newer moms and dads as you anticipate your SR's PIR. It was an awesome experience that I wish I could do over again, just for the thrill of it all!
Does anyone know if the sailor's get orders for their A School once bootcamp wraps up? I'm handling my daughter's student loans and they want orders for her A School so we can apply for an in-school deferment. They won't do a military deferment until she gets orders for her first duty assignment.
WandaG....she will either get her orders a few weeks from her PIR or they can wait and give them their orders when they get to A school. I had a niece that got them in BC and a nephew that got his while he was at A school.
Pattyb - As soon as PIR is over your sailor will tell you how much liberty he or she has. Sad to say for our sailor, for PIR 5/13, we had to have him back to the Base no later than 7 pm. We actually got him back to the Base by 6:20 p.m. He had to walk to the far reaches to get to his compartment and we didn't want him being late.
PIR ends at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time. By the time we left the Base, it was about 11:30 a.m. So we had roughly 7 hrs. with him before we took him back. The next morning we met him at the airport and stayed with him for about 1 1/2 hrs. before he had to board the plane.
Each Sailor's departure is different. If yours is a Saturday departure, your time may be spent at the airport. You can get a gate pass to be with them at the airline ticket counter. If your Sailor is staying in GL, your time may be a bit longer, but again, your Sailor will know all that.
When you get there you will be at the main group page. You can read and post there to talk with everyone in your TG-training group.
Scroll down to Discussion Forum and click View all. Join the discussion for your Div - "ship7 div 193". Here you can connect up with the other familyies that are in your SR Division!
Almost forgot...there will be other discussions about PIR etc. Have a look at those too. Plus there are "veteran" moms, etc on every site to help with questions. Look back through old posts too!
It's time...but very informative , fun and bonding.
mama c ship div 12/168-thank you for the information on time we have to spend with our sailors. I apprecaite that. Guess will have to wait and see then until I get there.
It has been two weeks since my SR left for BC. My husband called me in O'Hare while waiting for the bus to take them to GL. After that I missed the official "I'm here" call . A week later received his box with his clothes, shoes and a small note on the back of a McDonald's receipt. This last Sunday, day 10 i got a call from him and we talked for 5-6 minutes. He informed me that it took a while before his division filled in. He sounds good and excited. His PIR is 07/08. I got tons of letters for him ready to be mailed and i asked him for his address, he instructed me to wait for his form letter which I don't have yet.
Anyway I've been bugging the recruiter almost every day for Joel's address, he finally called yesterday. I'm sending a trial letter now just because I don't want him not to have any letters from me while the other SR's start to received theirs.

we have just recieved our first letter from our daughter so excited!
