Sharon:  Thanks for posting that...was jumping on here to post the same information.  That's a welcomed relief, I'm sure, for everybody!

Almost there....can't believe it!  Will be anxiously waiting for the "sailor"  call Friday!!!  Yippeeee!

  • SailorsCupcake Div269

It's unusual for SR's to get their orders before they have even completed bootcamp right?
  • BrendansParents

I think most should know where they will go next to attend "A" school. Of course there may be jobs like Nuclear where most will get stationed in Charleston SC.
  • TexasLiz

I just got my Husband's A-school orders in the mail. At least I think. It says the date he has to report to Great Lakes and when his class starts and finishes. It also came with a lot of information and websites about moving, HHG, and other support websites. And I also received his LES.
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

I don't mean A School, I mean his actual orders... he's undesignated so his job is just a "Seaman"... we already know where he's going to be stationed, what ship he's stationed to and when he's getting deployed...
  • Sparkling

SailorsCupcake, how did you find all that out? All we know for our son is where he is going for A School.
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

His Command Career Counselor called me and gave me all the information. He will be done with A School on Sept 16th and we will be moving to our new station by the 21st of Sept!!!
  • Sparkling

    Holy cow!!
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

I know! It's all happening very quickly... and he will be deploying 4 months later!!! AH!!! Someone hit the slow motion button!!!
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

Yeah probably because their A School is so short... they need to know so they can make preparations. I just never would have dreamed that it would happen THAT fast! lol

  • Sparkling

    4 months?  ACK!
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

I know! Way too soon to say goodbye again!!! But he will be back in July!

  • trapier

I remember our SR's recruiter telling us that before she is finished with A School, she will be given a list of locations and she would choose 3 locations from that list. Hopefully she would get stationed at one of the three locations that she picked. Of course there are NEVER any guarantees.
  • BrendansParents

Does anyone know if there are busses that travel to Waukegan from O'Hare? I checked on taxi fares and it looks like about $80 one way.
  • trapier

Lili- I am sure they are doing great at this point. Kelci sounded so pumped in her last letter to us. I live for Thursday, letter day and Sundays for possibly a phone call. We did not get a call on Sunday, liked we had hoped for.

I hope all the SR's are doing well, passing all physcial and writing exams. Just 8 more days and some hours!

  • Sparkling

Look at this thread for the Sarge's #.

I was wavering back and forth about renting a car and decided today it makes more sense and will be easier on my husband. I got a car from Avis, decent rates.

  • diannep

Mann-Clan>  Please call "Sarge" for transporation from the airport, and back.  He is wonderful and alot cheaper than that.  He is retired military and assists the Navy families, as well as the sailors on A School base.  Never have heard a bad word against him!  I would check his rates now so you can plan.

    Here's his number:  847-212-0246

He will be happy to help and is a wealth of info!

Also, ladies, not sure which group posted this, but heard that Costco has car rentals for cheap!  I believe this was "Connie" who said she was renting one for $18/day.

  • BrendansParents

Thanks diannep. I put his number in my phone. I'll call him next week as the time draws closer to get an estimate and see if we can have him waiting for us at the airport
  • Kimberley (Dillon's Mom)

caylex 9/279 - great info but you might want to remove the Battle-stations date from your post..that's a no-no for the Nave "Loose lips.."

  • diannep

Yes, thanks, Kimberley.  caylex:  Please do that...no BattleStations dates can be posted (private message instead).  Thanks for confirming though!
  • caylex 9/279

OOPS!  So sorry about that, I forgot.  Thanks for taking it off for me.
  • SailorBrittysMom

Sailorscupcake....do you know where he will be stationed already? Brit sent me her picks 2 weeks ago & said she would know in week 6 & let me know :) for san Diego :-) lot closer than Florida & tomorrow is usually our mail day so I'm hoping it will be in this letter .... She choose airman similar to seaman
  • caylex 9/279

Is it possible that at this late stage of the game, that my SR could still think he gets the whole weekend off?  In the letter we got today, he mentioned that there is a six flags park nearby. I know I explained about 3 weeks ago that I found out he would most likely fly out on Saturday. He'd have to know that just having Friday afternoon/evening would not allow for that, right??  Guess I'm just extremely emotional tonight  :(
  • tysmom

caylex...I am from Mi also.....your Sr will be the one to tell you when he is leaving or is he staying at GL? Then he may have the whole weekend. Its ok, you all have a lot going on.You want the time to go fast to see them and when you are there you want it to go slow. You are on an emotional roller coaster.

Vet mom of Ty who is also graduating 8/26! BESS in Groton.

  • caylex 9/279

He is going to San Antonio for A School.  When he left, his recruiter told him he'd have until mid-day Sunday off before flying out.  I'm just afraid he doesn't know/understand that he doesn't have much time, even though I explained it in a letter.
  • Jana

dianne-I looked at my form letter, and it does say that "All visitors age 13 and over must have valid, government-issued photo identification (driver's license, passport, etc.).  Children age 12 and under must have a copy of their birth certificate or social security card."

This is the e-mail I sent to the PAO:

I hope that I am e-mailing my question to the right address. If not, please redirect me, or provide me with a phone number so that I could contact the right person/office. My son is at Navy bootcamp and his PIR is scheduled for 8/26/2011. His 16 year old sister is on the list and would like to attend. I have been trying to get her a state ID card, but my sister had her social security card and I have just now received it, and will not receive the picture ID before 8/26/2011. She will not be enrolled in school until after we get back from PIR, so she has no school picture ID. If I have a certified copy of her birth certificate and her Social Security card, will she be able to get in? If not, is there any other document besides a picture ID that I could present? Any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!!

This is the response that I got:

    Ma'am,

She will get in with a copy of the birth certificate and social security card.

  • caylex 9/279

Jana, good news for your daughter  :)
  • SailorsCupcake Div269

SailorBrittysMom: Yes I do know where he is stationed already:) I'm waiting to tell everyone until I get to talk to Mason on Friday and make sure he already knows lol I would hate for him to be the last one to know lol BUT IT'S KILLING ME TO KEEP IT INSIDE lol

  • diannep

I think you have covered all bases, Jana.  Good idea to take a copy of the email with you.  Does she has a school pik ID from LAST year???  If so, you may want to tuck that in too, just in case.
  • caylex 9/279

Sandi, I feel the same way.  I am nervous, excited and kind of anxious too.  I wouldn't feel so anxious if it hadn't been 22 days since a phone call.  I really expected one somewhere between the 3 wk and battlestations!  But I keep looking at the clock and checking the mail and that is all that is getting me through these last days.
  • caylex 9/279

Yes, we are going.  I'm looking forward to it!  I will have my hubby & daughter plus my parents, my sister and my 91 year old grandma with me  :)

My husband said last night that I am dwelling on all this too much. I know he's right, but I haven't been able to help it.  I said to him "I told you I wouldn't handle this well and you didn't really believe me".

  • caylex 9/279

OK, I just had an idea. I don't know if anyone will want to play along but I think it will be a good way to focus on the good things instead of the missing our SRs and all that.

Each day until PIR I am going to post a topic or question for everyone. It will get us talking and sharing out our recruit  :)

Today's question is:  How old is your SR and when did they decide to join the Navy?

My son is 19 (almost 19.5) and was in DEP for 13 months.  He decided early on in his senior year that this is what he wanted, and enlisted a week after graduation.

  • Cathy_ProudNavyMom

Awesome idea caylex :-)  My daughter is 21 and after trying out a few different directions for her life, last December she settled on the Navy.  It was a big surprise for us, out of the blue so to speak.
  • caylex 9/279

Wow, Sharon!  That is young to know  :)  I wasn't exactly surprised by my son's decision. He has so many family members that have served our country, and was always VERY interested in my grandpa's WWII stories and loved looking at all his memorabilia.
  • BrendansParents

Did anyone else get the dreaded phone call I got last night? Our son did not pass the run portion of his physical. He was pretty disappointed. He was also pretty lacking in answers on what comes next for him or if he will be able to graduate with the rest of his Div. I would assume they would try to keep them together so they would retest him rather quickly. Am I wrong thinking this?
  • trapier

My SR is 18 as well. She decided in the beginning of her senior year she wanted to join the Navy. She was only 17, so her father and i signed for her to join. Of course, she made it official on her 18 birthday...she went to sign her papers again. One month after graduation, she was on her way to Great Lakes. She really thought a lot of her recruiter and he was somewhat comforting for us. When she went to Disney World for her senior trip, she brought her recruiter back Stars & Strips Mickey Ears for his car antenna!! He politely asked her "what am i suppose to do with these"?
  • kiminaz (ship 11/div 274)

My SR is also 18.  He decided when he was 16 that he wanted to join the Marines but I said no (I know I couldn't have stopped him once he turned 18).  We decided that he should speak with all of the different recruiters so he started with the National Guard then he went to speak to the Navy and stopped there.  His father and I signed the papers and he was in the DEP program since July 2010.  He turned 18 in May, graduated high school a few days later and then 5 weeks after that he was in Great Lakes.  He is following in my dad's footsteps so I'm excited for him!!
  • BrendansParents

Thanks Sharon. Honestly I did not even think to ask him his time. I was trying to be positive with him and he was pretty unsure of any of the questions I asked like "what happens next" or "when is the retest". I'm sure they told him the answers but he was so upset I don't think he heard them over the sound of him kicking himself.
  • trapier

Man-Clann, your son has come so far, I hope he will get the opportunity to try and try again if needed. I will keep y'all in our prayers. I know this is hard on you as well.
  • diannep

Mann-Clan:  He has time...you may want to go on FIT and talk to Sandy on there.  She is full of info.  But I know that he has time on this.  There are BStations most of next week and he can go all the way up until Thurs night before PIR.  He would then be in the balcony at PIR, but a sailor!  Here is the link to FIT.  Talk to the ladies there, but Sandy is especially full of info:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/fitprogram

  • diannep

...also, Mann-Clan.  If he happens to do BattleStations before Thurs night, he should be able to march with his division on Fri.  They just won't let him do this if he has been up all night Thurs night (BattleStations is an overnight drill)...
  • diannep

Cathy:  I had the same experience with my son.  He had gotten his A.S. degree, was working for a while, didn't like what he was in...then economy tanked along with his job, and I got a call, "Mom, what do you think about me joining the Navy?"  I was kind of shocked!  He had an older friend (29 at the time, my son was then 23) who had joined the yr before and was in bc then...similar personality types (wanna-be actors!).  So I think Brett had an influence on him going in.  But whatever their reason...they're SRs or sailors and learning alot!
  • diannep

...not sure I like being called "Ma'am."  Loved it when my "young" waiter yesterday called me "Miss." ---he got an extra TIP!  :-)  And, yes, my "Miss" days were over a LONG time ago...so I was quite flattered!
  • Navy_wife_in_training92

My SR, my fiance, turned 20 during P-days. When we graduated last June we were both going to the same college. Then that summer he asked me "What do you think about me joining the military?" I told him as long as it wasn't the army or the marines, I would support him and be there for him the whole time. His brother is in the Navy too, so it didn't really surprise me. We went to OSU last year, and he was in DEP since last summer. :)

OMG!!! I got a letter AND a picture today!! He sounds great! Said he's still sick but won;t go to medical not to miss anything!. Yesterday was personal inspection, today is Final Physical Assement.  Dianne, what you have listed is correct for his Battlestation's date ;) I am THRILLED to have heard from him today!
  • Navy_wife_in_training92

That is awesome!!! :D My mail doesn't come for another 2 hours sooo... I will let you all know! Lol what DIV?

  • Sparkling

Seems alot of them got sick, part of  the norm I guess.

Mann-Clan, I'm sure they will do whatever is needed to get him to pass.
