Here is information regarding Navy Federal Credit Union's Assistance Program if anyone is in need of it. Please note, there is application process now versus how I think it may have been even a few years ago.
Thanks for the heads up Chipmunk. I was curious about how this type of thing typically works. Between our sailors’ workload and the time zone difference it’s been a challenge to synch up with him. Is there precedent for how sailors manage in these situations since this unfortunately isn’t the first time the gov’t has shut down and likely won’t be the last. Thx!
Staci - I apologize for the delayed reply. I do believe that USAA is also supportive during these difficult times. The most important thing is for your sailor to apply for assistance if they feel like they will need their income to come in. If he is not sure, he can also speak to his Chief and find out how things have been dealt in the past.
I have to be honest, this is the first shutdown to actually affect my family personally and so I am wavering do we have enough built up to cover for a while, or do we go ahead and apply for assistance? It is important for the sailors to have money set aside, especially the Nukes leaving Power School and needing money up front for utility and apartment deposits when they are needing to rent during Prototype as their BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) can take a bit to be added to their pay.
Most importantly, your sailor needs to make sure they communicate with their bank, any creditors they have and their insurance companies if they are in a financial difficulty. If they notify these places, they may be able to get a forbearance, if not then they may be subject to late fees or increased interest rates or charges.
I am not a financial advisor, just a mom and wife who has been around the block a few times with various situations and sharing from my experience.
