Thank you so much, B'sNukeMom! I will join that group. I did find the SubMoms group as well (I wasn't looking for that, but was happy to see it).

    Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope our sailors are able to enjoy some time with their family or friends!

Havasu - so great to hear from you! All the best to your sailor.

Great Valentines! Thanks ladies for posting.

My sailor said he received his Valentine box. Yeah!

  • Navymom18

thesuperm72 - I would say completely normal. A school is really stressful and the weekends are the only time they can let their guard down and breathe a little.  It's healthy for them to have a release! Good luck to your sailor!

  • Havasu

    Thank you so much, Chipmunk

thesuperm72, I'm not sure about whether that is normal. My son didn't do anything like that, and I don't recall him saying that anyone else did either, but he mostly hung out with his classmates. Maybe someone has opened her up to the idea of getting out and away from her quarters and roommate and just getting some peace and quiet? When mine was in A School (as an MMN), he spent a lot of his weekends studying at the Rickover.

  • Rime

I have a question for Navy mom's who's kids are already serving on ships(subs). Our sailor has been trying to get in to have his infected toe seen for over two months (Ingrown nail). It's a bit frustrating for us, the one in charge of getting him an appt has just kept telling him to wait..... Is this normal?

Thank you for all your input. I read comments often, think I'll respond, but fail to actually sign in to do so. We're still working full time plus taking care of our youngest granddaughter while her parents work....fun but exhausting.

Husband's a pastor, I work with special needs. We're almost at 40 years of wedded bliss. Youngest is our sailor, next up is a detective, and middle child went Marine, now working with gov as a base guard. Oldest two have civilian jobs, manager and hardware clerk. They're awesome kids, if I do say so myself!

  • JayDee659

Rime unfortunately it can be common. Your Nuke will need to push the issue. I'm speaking from experience.

  • Chipmunk

thesuperm72 - I totally understand your concerns. Not sure how you know she is going to Airbnb's, but you might want to do what you can to open communication channels without antagonizing. I have to be honest, my first thought was she has a boyfriend and they are spending the weekend away from watchful eyes. I know I am taking the negative thought instead of think the best, but you asked. They have the weekends off, yes, but there are curfews and protocols. I don't know if I mentioned those in my information about A school or not, but they are expected to be studying at least on Sunday afternoon, and more if they are behind.

I just know in the four trips I made to GC, it was not uncommon for us to see "couples" coming and going from the nearby motel. And no, my son, stuck pretty close to NNPTC during A school.

Can anyone tell me when COMPS are for Prototype? My daughter has 6 weeks left but I thought I heard something about COMPS at the end of this month. Is that possible?
  • Chipmunk

Pat - to my knowledge, with Prototype, they can be on varying schedules as to when they are testing. But there are one or two "mid-term" exams as I recall that they are expected to take and pass well enough to show that they are on track for finishing on time. I think my son said they were told to focus on more of one or two named subjects because those were on the test, along with the other things they were studying.

Hi everyone! Just checking in and catching up on all the posts I missed - some great questions and discussions! :)

Last night we had FaceTime with my son and he is really enjoying the down time that he is having in INDOC as he waits to class up for A school. He did his "briefs" for the first week of INDOC, and last week he was "cleaning" which he literally put in "air quotes" because he said that it is obviously just busy work as they keep cleaning the same barracks over and over again so there is no time for them to even get dirty! LOL! But he has evenings and weekends free and he is hanging out with friends, playing video games, going to the gym, and going into Charleston on Saturdays. A far cry from BC, for sure! He is getting his UIs done, too, before he classes up for ET, which should be the first week of March.

It is so great to be able to text and FaceTime with him, and he looks and sounds so good! I know the stress will start again when classes start, but I am feeling truly calm, happy, and blessed this week for the first time in a while! Hugs to you all! :)

  • Northwoodsmom

Hi Velvetenor, good to hear from you again. My son will be down there in a couple of weeks. I heard they start a new program every other month so I am thinking he will have a good month in INDOC too. So it is nice to know it is more relaxed part of the Navy before school starts and they have to buckle down . Keep us posted on what is happening if you can. I know how busy life gets.

    God Bless!

  • Jen

I do not get on here much, but I read the post.  I thought there was someone on here who said they could help with taxes.  Are we able to claim our nuke?  I know that they are in the military but the nuke program is considered school. Please help if you can.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi Jen - I don't believe you can claim them since you are not providing support for them.  Yes, they are in school but they are getting paid to be there.....but with that being said I am not a tax preparer so I don't know for sure - I just know that once B left for the Navy we no longer claimed him.  Hopefully someone with a tax background will chime in!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Velvetenor - you are right about him enjoying his time off right now.  Once classes start things will definitely ramp up.  And that's when you will be called upon to be the cheerleader!  The added communication is so nice - hopefully once classes start he'll get in a routine and keep the communication lines open ;-D

  • 3B'smom

Jen - I concur with B'sNuke. If your sailor was a minor you might be able to claim him/her for the portion of the year before they left for BC. I would consult a tax professional on that. Don't let the name "school" fool you. They are receiving military training. Also, your sailor should be filing his/her own taxes. They receive a form similar to a W2 (it might have a different name. I don't recall). They access it online.

  • Chipmunk

Velvetenor  - Glad your sailor is getting his UI's done, he will definitely be glad he did when it is the week or so before comps and he know he does not have to squeeze that in as well.!

I have been busy all day today and more tomorrow, so not likely on, glad all are doing well.

Jen - I can not recall, my son left the end of June for BC and I don't remember if we were able to claim him because it had been 6 months or not (as he was still in high school through May.) . But also, there is something that changes with tax credits once they turn 17, I think, so I don't know that we were even able to claim him.

It is best to at least ask for some help, or research it yourself.

  • Chipmunk

    Happy President's Day!

I know not everyone has the day off, but I hope those of you that did, enjoyed it. I am sure my sailor did.

Happy Wednesday - this is how I feel my day is starting off lol!

  • Havasu

I literally LOLd at that, B'sNukeMoM. I hope your day gets better! Happy Wednesday, everyone!

  • SubMom

B'sNukeMoM - hoping your day gets better. All of last week was like that for me -no fun! Sending lots of happy sunshine your way from Michigan :)

  • Velvetenor

B'sNukeMoM - that is hysterical! I hope the day is improving for you now!  We actually have sunshine here in NJ today, and I am loving it since most days have been overcast, recently.  It's still too cold for me, here, but these types of sunny days remind me that Spring is on the way! :)

  • haoo168

My Sailor does not want to reply our text. Is there away that I can find that my sailor is in school now? my sailor arrived NNPTC on 12/7/2019. Thank for any input

  • Chipmunk

haoo168 - B'sNukeMom or someone else might have a better answer for you, but I do think you are able to contact NNPTC and at least give them a message that you are inquiring about your sailor and they are not responding to your texts messages and you are just making sure they are safe and sound. I doubt they will give you much information, since he is an adult, but they might pass the message along.

I do know that my son told me they regularly remind the sailors to call home, because they don't like answering the phone calls of upset mothers and other family members who do not hear from their sailors.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I’m having a problem all of a sudden posting from my computer so doing this from my phone.

Here’s the current ombudsman phone number. 843.323.9159. There are currently 3 ombudsmen - Afton, Jolie and Stacy. It does say if you don’t leave a voice mail they will NOT call you back.  You can also email them at: nptuombudsman@gmail.com

    Hope this helps!

  • WearsLargeHats

Just testing because B was having a problem posting.
We're going to get to see some snow tomorrow! We haven't had measurable snowfall in almost 2 years so naturally they are forecasting snow on the day we are planning to drive up to Asheville NC, where it will snow even more than here. Just plenty of rain for your Sailors down in Goose Creek.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Trying again from computer - and it works!

  • haoo168

Thanks all and promptly reply back. I did call 843-323-9159. I cannot recall her name but she is super nice and patient to answer my question. She gave me other phone # 843-296-9426. I will try to call tomorrow. She also suggested me to joing Facebook group called NavyNuke Parents and Spouses and Navy Nuke A School and Beyond . I did join both and answered both group questions and wait both group to accept me in.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Glad you were able to reach someone and I hope you can get more info from the FB groups.  Sometimes they get busy with their new life and that might be why you haven't heard anything.  I hope it hasn't been since 12/7 though......keep us posted.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

And I just noticed - the 843.296.9426 # is the number I have posted up above.  Good to know it's still a good #.

  • Chipmunk

haoo168 - glad you were able to get some information. I posted that from my computer as I literally needed to be walking out the door for another appointment. Sorry I was not able to look up phone numbers for you. Thanks B's Nuke Mom!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

AP's*nuke*mom* - that's awesome!  My youngest loves the hot cheetos with limon too.  He recently moved to Nebraska and was worried he wouldn't find them there but he finally did!

  • Chipmunk

AP's*nuke*mom* - How funny!! So glad you have found a way to make your sailor and others happy! Thanks for sharing.

  • Wink5

Nebraska may not have any pro sports or skyscrapers or tourist destinations or all that fun stuff. But at least we have hot Cheetos with limon. LOL!! Miss ya BsnukeMoM! Hope to see ya on your next visit to Nebraska

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Wink5 - so good to see you comment!  I've loved hanging with you when visiting Nebraska and you know I will check in with you on our next visit ;-D

Nothing planned as of right now but it looks like N is definitely going to be staying for another year.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

  • Velvetenor

Happy Friday! This week we received the packet in the mail from NNPTC that describes the Nuclear program and has the information on the Ombudsman, etc., so we are ready for my SN to begin his A school on March 2nd!

One question I do have is regarding "leave" time. The paperwork said that they generally get 10 days of leave after A school and before Power school. Do those 10 days include weekend days or are they only counting weekdays, which would essentially equate to 2 weeks off?

  • haoo168

Hello All, my sailor texted me a short message stating that he got in trouble for underage drink in Goose Creek SC. that is all I have. May I ask and will my Sailor get kicked out from Navy? what is the consequence?I am very nervous now. My brain is scrambling and cannot think anymore. Please advise what to do. Many Thanks.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

haoo168 - well underage drinking is NOT a good thing  period but especially in the Navy and especially in the nuke program. They don't tolerate that. I don't want to sugarcoat it but since your sailor just got there and hasn't even started A school yet there is a good chance he could get separated.  This probably explains why you haven't heard from him as he's probably been on restriction.  He will go to Captains Mast and his fate will be decided there.  It can range from demotion/restriction/lost pay to complete separation.  You will have to get that information from him......I'm sorry I don't have more to tell you.

  • haoo168

    Thank you for info.

May I ask what is Captains Mast?

  • Chipmunk

haoo168 - I am sooo sorry!! I concur with B'sNukeMom. My best advice comes from what my sailor shared that they were told during INDOC and that is, be honest and own up to your mistakes. It doesn't mean it will go away or make a difference but they expect integrity out of the Nukes and it starts in A school. Underage drinking is not acceptable. I know that may seem hard to handle, my husband was Army and in his days at Basic, they were not as regimented, but Navy Nukes are held to a higher standard.

Please know you can reach out to us either privately or here, it is hard being Mom and knowing you can't do much of anything.

  • Chipmunk

Velvetenor - My son was one of those who did not get the leave after A school and only 3 days of liberty. Maybe some of our moms whose sailors have more recently will be able to answer you, but as far as I know leave is number of days gone and it doesn't matter if a weekend or not, but at NNPTC it might be different.

  • The Hammer

Hi all... sad momma here as I took my boy to the airport this morning after a month long visit. I know that I'm very unfortunate and somewhat unreasonable... but my heart breaks every time.

To sooth myself... I'm picking up our new lab puppy this evening!

  • Chipmunk

I was looking for a discussion that I thought was on our site someplace about Captain's mast, but I could not find it. There is this and you may also do a Google search, if at least reading and gleaning some knowledge is helpful to you.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-judicial_punishment

I will likely not be on the site much until late at night, if I am able from now till Monday, but we are hoping for the best for your sailor haoo168.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Captain's Mast is a non-judicial disciplinary hearing where the CO decides on what disciplinary action will be taken for the infraction.  Sometimes the mast is private and sometimes it's public.  Often with alcohol related offenses it is public (meaning everyone in the class is called out to see what is happening and to make an example).

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

The Hammer - those "see ya laters" are always so hard!  I'm sure the new lab puppy will cheer you up though!  Share pictures please ;-D
