I had some unexpected midday communication from my sailor, which is always sweet. His ship's FB page keeps us pretty up to date with pictures of what is going on and I saw some large crates of pineapples that had been delivered, so I asked him about them. He replied, "as always mom you know more about what is going on in the pipeline than I do, but we had those pineapple yesterday and they sure were good!!"
He also said he is now Throttle Man qualified, so all he has left is Reactor Operator and Shutdown Reactor Operator (I believe that is correct) so that he is senior qualified. He was super happy!
B’sNukeMoM - so glad your dad is feeling better. My father in law had a pacemaker put in a year ago and it’s a difference of night and day! Praying your dad gets to come home soon! NMH

B'sNuke, so happy for your dad! What a relief! I bet N's haircut was a hoot! We're all feeling the lack of our salon/barbershop and it's not pretty, at least on my end. Vanity takes a hit but nipping COVID in the bud is the bigger goal so there you go.
Heard the captain of the Roosevelt appealing for help. I guess the good news is that the sailors are healthy, robust young men.
Our hospital ships are making me so proud. Navy strong!
Hi all - Happy Wednesday and oh look, it's April Fools Day! Was really hoping to wake up and find out this was all some weird April Fools joke that we could now end.....but no such luck :( Our news is saying the next 2 weeks in CA are going to be the worst of it with a drastic increase in cases reported. Continuing to social distance and doing our best to follow recommended protocols. I know we can get through this!
NancyJo - I also saw the request for help on the TR. B has a number of friends on the ship that he is still in contact with. It's definitely a scary situation with them all in such close quarters....praying for all of our sailors.
My niece and nephew have a band - 5J Barrow. They did a live concert via FB/IG last night from their apartment. It was fun to watch. They will be doing it every Tuesday night for a while. They are based out of Asheville, NC (formerly in NY). Here's the link to their band - and I'll post it up above too.
B'sNukeMom - We have at least one sailor from this group on the Roosevelt, not sure if any more and one of my friends on BC Mom - After reading an article last night and the captain commenting about them not being a cruise ship, my MamaBear rose up in me and I sent a message to the one US Senator that will hopefully at least pay attention. Too bad I didn't know about it during the Town Home Telephone call my son was on with him yesterday. Anyway, not sure why our Navy medical ships weren't sent to the aid of our sailors first, or a couple of cruise ships, that no one wants to be on, couldn't be sent to their aid. - Not much but this "mama friend" had to reach out someway, somehow. - I can't do anything else except pray and send cyber hugs!!
There are several bands that are reaching out and playing their music. It is good!!
Okay, just found out that my other senator is the head of the Arms Service Committee ?? and so I called and left a message on their voicemail. They are all working off site, as well. I did speak to the secretary in my other US Senator's office. At least, I made an effort, best I can do at the moment. Now it is time to get to the grocery store.
Good afternoon! Thank you, all of you, for your congratulations for those who passed comps for A-School on Monday--and for the on-going generosity of spirit when so many are facing such tough times. My heart is in my throat for those on the Roosevelt, so please keep us informed.
I am lucky to still be working from home--busy getting figures together for our business which was forced close by the pandemic. Grateful for the CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program--hoping we will be lucky enough to qualify so we can continue to keep our (very valuable) employees on through this crisis. I received word this morning that my eldest and his fiancee will be joining us the weekend of the 10th--indefinitely! That will make three millennials, one stolenial (stone age) adults, four dogs (two of them puppies), and one Bob the Cat in my 1700 square foot house. All four of us will be working from home too, LOL!
I remain grateful for so many things each and every day--especially the text from my sailor yesterday sharing news of his ironing session with a friend as they prepared for inspection this morning. He is bursting with enthusiasm and pride--as of Friday he will have a new classification, has qualified for T-track watch (whatever that might mean), and gets 10 days of liberty which I know he intends to spend part of on XBox. Little pleasures can mean so much.
SuzyPWarrior--I don't know how many graduations there are from A-School Friday, but I wonder if our sailors might have been in the same class. I am still filled with sadness I could not share this special time with him in person, but I am filled with immeasurable joy at his happiness.
ShipOfDoodles - that's what I've been working on at work today - completing the application for the Paycheck Protection Program. I've almost got it done - hoping to get it to our banker tomorrow. We've got about 100 employees that we are trying to keep (safely) employed. I feel as though I'm running in circles with some of this stuff though!
ShipOfDoodles - Your sailor finished all of his UIs (Under Instructions), it is a series of watches that they have to qualify to stand, once they complete A school. It is how they keep NNPTC running, they use the sailors T-Track time to keep eyes on the site.
It is imperative that all sailors get their UIs done about a week or two before A school comps - as I recall from what my sailor told me. So, any sailor that comes to GC and is put in INDOC for several weeks, it behooves them to get their UIs accomplished before they are trying to coordinate times and stand training watches as well as studying their school work, PT, 5K run, etc. I believe there were 10 - 13 UIs. I discuss it in my A school daily schedule discussion above.
Chipmunk - I'm so happy to hear that they are getting help for the Roosevent! When I was in GC in December for prototype grad, we picked up a sailor and gave him a ride. He was being flown to the Roosevent after graduation. I think about this sweet, funny kid and then about all of these young, brave sailors and pray for their health and bravery.
The Hammer - Yes, this is good news. All I have is from the news article Anti M shared on BC Mom. Things start hitting closer to home when you have a sailor on a ship or sub. Even though mine is only doing Underways, they are still out to sea. The reality of our Nukes staying with the ship hit me for the first time.
Good morning - thought I would do a quick check-in.
B'sNuke - how is your Dad doing?
I haven't heard from my sailor in awhile. His boat is usually stationed in Bremerton, (bigsky21 and The Hammer have sailors there too?) His boat is gone for quite awhile so my mind is all over the place with thoughts. I am not certain he ever added me to the Ombudsman contact list, so it makes it that much more difficult knowing I don't have that resource for info either.
Life here in WA state for me is a little chaotic at the moment. I am still going into the hospital for our few outpatient biopsies and acute symptomatic patients. I am still doing my administrative/supervisor work as well as patient care for now. We have furloughed/low censused about 2/3 of staff here. It is a little stressful...
Thinking of everyone and our sailors! Praying for health, safety, comfort and peace
Thinking about our sailors on the TR. Reading between the lines, it seems our Nukes will still be onboard keeping the reactors safe and running. Prayers for all of them and their families worrying from afar!
My daughter said they are starting to collect a list of volunteers to go to Guam and stand watches on the TR to help the short staffed crew. Of course there are more than reactor watches to be staffed and with her ship in the yard, there is probably a lot of folks without a lot to do. Not the case in reactor, but elsewhere I'm sure. It's nice that they're looking at getting folks in to help the TR out with the simple day to day things.
JayDee659 - I am wondering, and you may not know, but would the volunteers be going in after they are able to completely disinfect the ship, or would they be having to go in and be vulnerable as well? Just a thought that crossed my mind. I did also wonder though, if they would be able to bring other sailors in to help lighten the load?
Momterp - that is my assumption.
KayCee - hopefully you can get another hike in the woods this weekend. Those mountains help a lot to relax, breath in and let out! Did you ever figure out who your sailor's ombudsmen was? If so, PM me and I will see if I can help.
SECNAV announced that the Commanding Officer of the TR was relieved of his duties today. I'm not trying to stir anything up, just posting his statement as to why:
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. Also take a look at the Pages (19) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all". And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
I found out this morning that my oldest kiddo (not my sailor) has been exposed to COVID-19. They are considered an essential worker, working in a hospital (tho not a doctor or nurse, so not with the sickest folks). They got a phone call last night from occupational health at the hospital saying they've been exposed and to come in for a test. Won't know the results for a few days. These will be anxious days for me and my family, that's for sure!!
PacNWmom, I,too, am an essential hospital worker. I know I have definitely been exposed once and have been unofficially exposed on more than one occasion. I am over 60 and have followed all best practices (even before this pandemic) so maybe, if I get this virus, I will come through it. My Nuc son, in SC, has no way to not be exposed, so I am worrying more about him than me.
With regard to the relieving of the CO of the TR: you cannot release this to the public as he did and he certainly knows that. The agony he is causing the families of these sailors is immeasurable.
I am glad that I read the link you posted B'sNukeMom - It has been a long day so won't say much. I have seen things from one side of the story, even with my husband stating to me, even before it was official - the CO of the Roosevelt will likely be released, because that is not the way to do things. It is not military professionalism (his words, just now.). I very much appreciated SECNAV's statement. Thanks again for posting.
I just realized that today is the 5th year anniversary of the day my daughter enlisted. It was 3 years ago today that she got her orders for after prototype. How that time has flown.
PacNWmom and NonnaB - sorry to hear about the exposure. Definitely praying it doesn't become something more serious for you.....It's hard not to worry about our loved ones right now :(
We are still working but I think it's just a matter of time before they shut us down. We are residential construction and they are slowly starting to shut down construction. I got my application in for the Payment Protection Program so hopefully we get approved and can continue to pay our employees if/when we do shut down.
I'm glad this week is about over - it seems like it has dragged on forever.....I'm actually looking forward to staying in all weekend.....
B'NukeMom, our US Sen, in his Town Hall Telephone meeting yesterday was answering questions and giving information on the Payment Protection Program. I very much appreciate all that he does to keep us informed of what is going on in D.C.
JayDee659 - I can remember my sailor's swear in and PIR date, but I have no clue what his enlistment date was. I just know it was in the summer.
PacNWmom and NonnaB - Thanks for sharing. It is tough being in this limbo state, not know if exposure means actual infection or what. Thoughts and prayers for health and healing.
KayCee - We had rain and cold, droped back to 33' here!! I have not paid attention to the WA weather, but I hope that you are able to get out and enjoy some beautiful mountain air this weekend!!
This has definitely been a week. My company has furloughed all of second shift and half the office. I will be staying on but am fortunate enough that I can do 90% of my job from home. In the 49 years that my employer has been in business this is the first time they have had to do anything like this. My prayers go out to everyone during these uncertain times. I pray for peace for those that have been exposed to COVID-19 and those awaiting results. NMH to all of you
For those of you with sailors on aircraft carriers, I have a question. My son’s fiancé is getting ready to be deployed. In talking with him last night, we told him we planned to send her a care pkg next month. He said that with everything going on there might be specific limitations on what could and could not be sent and perhaps that nothing was being allowed now. He wasn’t sure how to confirm as her ship is in quarantine before they leave. Does anyone know? Thanks!
My sailor was deployed on his sub while all this has been going on and said they were told a little bit about COVID but it made it very strange to not know if anyone other than their crew mates was alive. FamilyGrams helped calm the nerves. So eerie!
Tulip - It's hard to say. I would try to get info directly from her. My son's ship received a mail call earlier this week. They are in the middle of a deployment.
Hey everyone, just wanted to pop in quick and say hello and thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for my son and the crew of the TR. It's been a very hard week dealing with all that has happened. I'm just hoping for restored good health to all our Sailors so they can get back to business as usual!!
My son remains on the ship and will be one of the last to be taken off tested and quarantined. I've been able to talk to him more often which is comforting. He is keeping a good attitude and keeping his spirits up. He is sad about the loss of Captain Cozier. He was loved and respected by his crew. If you have had the opportunity take a look at the videos of the farewell the crew gave him when he left. It's very heartwarming. At least he knows the crew appreciated him.
Hope you are all staying healthy and keeping busy.
Tulip: I have not heard any limitations on sending packages. My son just received a box I sent to him on March 10th this past week. And that was on the TR so I would say just send it. She should get it eventually even if it is delayed due the situation. The post office should know if there are any limitations. I haven't heard of any. :) They love those packages. LOL!
2 1/2 weeks ago I had a fever and a cough. Being the only one in my company who was being pro-active about what was happening in the world, on my doctor's advice, I worked from home in quarantine. My boss thought I was being a drama queen. My Dr was scared of what I had and wouldn't let me come into her office (I had co-workers that had just returned from a Convention in Las Vegas where a lot of people were getting sick). My symptoms were mild so that I was unable to get tested for Coronavirus. After a week of being at home with a low-grade fever, my Dr sent me to a Care Now clinic to have tests to rule out Strep, Flu & Pneumonia. Strep & Flu were negative. I was developing Pneumonia in my right lung. STILL, I cannot get tested. I was put on antibiotics and told to rest and drink lots of water. I haven't had my followup yet but I think I'm almost in the clear.
Whatever I had was mild compared to some Flu's I've had in the past. But even as I felt reasonably ok, it was developing into something serious. The number of sick in our nation is only the tip of the iceberg because of the lack of testing.
On the flip side, 82% of the sick will only have a mild case. Prayers to everyone's families as there are two threats: sickness & economic destruction.
My boss from the start wanted a Release before I could get back to work. My Dr wouldn't give me a release for something she couldn't get me tested for. Luckily, the Care Now gave me a release for the Pneumonia which also fell under the same guidelines the CDC recommended on returning to work after Coronavirus (had to have 72 hours fever free prior to returning to work).
I wanted to share the challenges and how I made it through. Blessings to everyone.
Tx Mom, I appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm thankful you have come through ok. My niece thought she had it (nurse practitioner) but has had 2 negative tests so life goes on. But she had a fever for about 10 days with a sore throat. Scary stuff. Mostly I pray people stay healthy. For most people with no underlying health conditions it will turn out fine. It's the people who are already vulnerable in some way that are at risk. My oncologist said my radiation ended 6 wks ago so my immune system should be pretty much back to normal but I'm still being hyper-vigilant. I sure do miss by g-babies.
Prayers for all of you with family on or going to the TR. Tough situation all around. A captain who is loved is like the father on a ship so the crew will suffer the loss. I guess there will be a lot of discussion about this in the months to come which will all be for the good. We have never experienced anything like this before and our only clear point of view will be in the rearview mirror.
I fear for our economy and am thankful my school district continues to pay all the employees even though the kids are all at home for the rest of the year.
My sailor is only working 3-day weeks. At least he's still working. Keeping busy is good. Talking about how times flies, he will be 10 yrs in the Navy on May 12. Stay safe, Sea Sisters!
Tulip - I sent a care package to my son, but afterwards found out it would take 2 - 3 weeks to get there. The PO told me that it would be tracked by them, until it was handed off to the military. As of yet, he has not received it. For those that were able to drop off boxes, they were told to make sure and wipe down (disinfect) all plastics due to the virus being able survive on it for said hours. Those boxes were then isolated for said hours. As far as restrictions, I know the USPS says not to send hand sanitizer and wipes with alcohol.
I am sorry to hear that the crew on your sailor's boat had inaccurate or no information that caused greater concern than was necessary.
SubMom - Even though my husband's job is considered "essential", his biggest concern throughout all of this has been the economic impact, especially on small business. I am sorry to hear about your company's struggles.
This is a link to one of my US Senator's pages with information on economic relief for workers and businesses. I realize it is directed to Oklahomans, but I thought it might be helpful, if you are having difficulty finding answers to your own questions. The page is laid out well with further links to specific information.
Chipmunk I only remember because it was Good Friday. My brakes went out on the way to the recruiting office and my daughter left some papers at home. Maddening day.
Oh my JayDee - I can picture that one in my head!!! Brakes going out though can be scary business. That happened to my daughter when she had taken her brother to one of his activities for me. She was calling me on the phone driving around in circles in the parking lot trying to find out what she should do! - The really scary thing was we almost took that car on the road to our sailor's prototype graduation.
I am sure your daughter's pets are enjoying having her home!!
TX Mom of Faraway Nuke - So good to hear from you! Not glad to hear that you went through all that you did but glad to hear you are healing. I was reading your post to my husband and he got indignant that you were not able to get a test once the pneumonia showed up!!
NancyJo - Glad your niece is doing a lot better! Fevers are nothing to mess around with. I hear you on missing the grandbabies!!!
Wanted to let y'all know my kiddo's COVID test came back negative. My heart is gleeful for our family, yet still grieves for all those families who have not been as lucky.
My sailor found out that his girlfriend is sick when he got off shift yesterday. She has taken the test and is awaiting results. She does have underlying health issues. We are just beside ourselves with worry!
Hi all - another Monday almost over and I'm just getting on here to say good morning lol!
I hope everyone had a good weekend. I spent the weekend at home - only ventured out once to do a drive by my moms to drop off some groceries on her porch. Luckily my husband did some grocery shopping and got a few items for her too. As of yesterday everyone in our county is now required to wear a mask when you leave the house. I spent yesterday putting together some makeshift masks out of old t-shirts because of course you can't find masks anywhere!
The Hammer - I too am sorry to hear the news. I'm hoping she gets a negative result. Please let her know that us Navy moms are praying for her!
N was supposed to fly back to NE on Thursday but that's not happening now - everything is just sort of up in the air.....not really sure when he'll be able to go back. His lease is up in July so something will have to be done by then - really hoping we might be back to some sort of normalcy by then. And was talking to B&C yesterday and they are starting to wonder about the wedding - also in July. We're just taking everything one day at a time ~ that's about all we can do for now.
To try and calm fears I'll share the story of my workplace. , My coworker tested positive and was ill at home. She's on the mend, but said the fevers are not fun and the coughing exhausting. She can't say enough about drinking hot liquids and trying to keep up and moving as much as you can. She said that helps and Ofcourse prayer. Her episode lasted five hard days and about 5 mild days. She's been without fever for 4 days now, but still coughing. She has had underlying health issues with her lungs so this is a blessing, but most of the stories printed and posted are HORRIBLE, and I wanted to share one that shared a version of endurable and survivable. God Bless our Sailors and grant our leaders wisdom to make good choices. May God grant comfort and support for those hurting and frightened.
CSW - Amen to your prayer! Thank you for sharing the information from your friend. I honestly haven't researched much on the virus and how people are reacting to it, so hearing what it is like from someone that has been through it is very helpful to have an idea of how to deal with it yourself, if faced with the same situation. I have wondered if staying hydrated was important and it sounds like she used prior knowledge of staying hydrated, warm liquids, moving around to keep the lungs working.

Chipmunk I have no idea . Just something my daughter mentioned to me during our chat . She can't because of her pets so I didn't press for info.

SECNAV announced that the Commanding Officer of the TR was relieved of his duties today. I'm not trying to stir anything up, just posting his statement as to why:

JayDee - my how time flies, right?!?
PacNWmom and NonnaB - sorry to hear about the exposure. Definitely praying it doesn't become something more serious for you.....It's hard not to worry about our loved ones right now :(
We are still working but I think it's just a matter of time before they shut us down. We are residential construction and they are slowly starting to shut down construction. I got my application in for the Payment Protection Program so hopefully we get approved and can continue to pay our employees if/when we do shut down.
I'm glad this week is about over - it seems like it has dragged on forever.....I'm actually looking forward to staying in all weekend.....

Kristen WELCOME! We are glad you have joined us.

My sailor was deployed on his sub while all this has been going on and said they were told a little bit about COVID but it made it very strange to not know if anyone other than their crew mates was alive. FamilyGrams helped calm the nerves. So eerie!
Prayers for all of you and your loved ones!

LOL!

Long time no post but I lurk here a lot...

I pray everyone is staying safe.....
