islandgirl, I'm so sorry! Devastating for sure. Hang in there, there is a life after the navy. We're here for you if need us.

    B'sNuke, love the photos!

  • Velvetenor

Islandgirl - so very sorry to hear this news. I agree with what others have posted and that all things happen for a reason. She will find her place and be a stronger person for it! *Hugs*

B'sNukeMoM and Tulip - congratulations to your graduates!! How exciting!! :)

  • Chipmunk

    B'sNukeMom - I enjoyed the pictures!

Islandgirl - don't hesitate to reach out to us!

  • Marianne

    Good Morning Everyone!

Chipmunk - On Wednesday, you asked about the 5K and PT.

My sailor, an EM, told me that he ran the 5K this past Thursday. And PT is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

He didn't know about the alligator. What's that all about? Back in the day, at college, I was put in charge of taking care of the swans on campus. Part of my responsibility was to keep track of their numbers. If one (or more) didn't show up for meal time, I was told more than likely the campus alligator got them. Is it something like that?!?

  • JayDee659

Mzrianne there is an alligator in the pond at Goose Creek.  His name is Charlie. The kids see him frequently, I saw him once. My daughter gave me a stuffed Charlie and a Charlie t-shirt one year for Christmas. All these items and more are available at the mini NEX. Happy hunting.

  • Chipmunk

Hi Marianne  - Wow, I wonder if they are only doing 5K every so often but doing PT 3x/ wk instead of 2x/wk?  There seemed to be an inside joke about the EMs & ETs having to have PT more often than the MMs. :-)

As far as the alligator, one of the other veteran moms mentioned it when my son was at GC. My son never saw the alligator but one of his friends did, I think. There is a small pond area near where they ran for the 5K, I think, and they hang out there.

The sailors also have to prepare for their "Dash for Cash" run, which is the PRT - Physical Readiness Test, that I believe they have to pass either in A school or PS before they can get their advancement bonus money - I may be mistaken on the details it has been a bit, but they will be expected to keep up and maintain throughout their studying. Once they get to the fleet, it can be even harder for them to keep up their runs and such, so the self-discipline and team work that is also being instilled in them is important.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

We saw Charlie back in 2013!  We were there for A school grad and he was lounging by the pond.  I wanted to take a picture and B yelled at me that it wasn't allowed lol!

I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday.  I gave one of the dogs a bath - woohoo!

  • Chipmunk

Islandgirl - I sent you a PM - check your Inbox.

  • SubMom

I had so much catching up to do- I didn’t realize I hadn’t been on the last two weeks. So thankful for those that have tested negative, praises for those that are healing and continued prayers of comfort for those that have lost loved ones. I also want to say congratulations to”K” and all the other graduates! To those who’s kids are re-rating / separating from the Navy please don’t lose faith. Your kids have an amazing future ahead of them!! To all my sea-sisters thank you for everything. The support in this site is amazing!

Chipmunk, I always remember that as I have 3 very good friends with birthdays on 4/19.  It's also the anniversary of the horrible end to the siege at the Branch Davidian complex in Waco.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Wow, I can't believe it's been 25 years.....

    Happy Tuesday!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Thanks for the OPSEC reminder. I like that this shows some examples of Do's and Do Not's.

I hope everyone is having a great day!  I will be participating in my first Zoom meeting tonight for a book club I am part of. We shall see how it goes!

  • SubMom

Not Nuke related just a giggle for the day: I took my hair clip out last night and my husband couldn't hide the shock on his face. Probably had something to do with me looking like Animal from the muppets! Good thing love is blind :) Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

  • Chipmunk

LOL! SubMom - Thanks for the giggle!

Have a great day everyone!! My youngest son was so hopeful to see the meteor shower last night but we had rain and clouds all night. I don't know if my sailor managed to see it or not.  Did anyone else get to see it?

    Happy Wednesday!

Chipmunk - I didn't see the meteor shower either....

SubMom - lol!  Yes, my hair leaves something to be desired right now.  I finally broke down and bought a box of color online.  It hasn't shown up yet....and then on Monday I got a text from my hairdresser that said she was putting together "root touch up packets" with everything needed and could do a curbside drop - so she dropped it yesterday at my house.  Gonna attempt to do my roots this weekend.  Still doesn't solve my problem of needing a cut but at least the color will (hopefully) look better!

Our weather is warming up here in SoCal.  Supposed to be in the 90's this weekend.  A pool weekend for sure!

  • JayDee659

My hair stylist is in Florida, thinking I was still down there, she offered to run by and give me a quick trim but I wa already back home.  I'm hoping that she opens her shop before I have to go back to the office.  My hair is growing back in from a pixie cut so I have a good start on a mullet.  Thank goodness I only have a few stray greys so color isn't a worry with me.

  • Marianne

Good morning! I didn't see the meteor shower either. Oops! And I love that sort of thing! The weather in western PA is freezing! Literally! Hopefully that's the last of it.

According to my sailor, they ran about 3 miles yesterday. I think I need to take up running (or something) because I'm gaining weight due to inactivity. Ugh

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Marianne - I have a recumbent exercise bike that I use.  We had gotten it for my mom to use but she never did so she gave it back to me.  I ride it every night for 45 minutes - it works out well and I'm able to get a lot of reading done!  I've never been a runner although both my boys were.....

JayDee - I have so much gray it's not even funny.  It's actually quite white - just like my moms lol!  But I'm not ready for my head to be totally white YET!

  • CSW

Well my fitness suggestion is Yoga with Adrienne on You TUBE. She has a program for almost any part of you that is hurting and a regular program for general fitness. These run from 10 minutes to a full hour. EVERY SINGLE one that I have watched has been great and I'm a rookie!

  • NNLori

Hey everyone!! Congratulations to the graduates!! It's hard not being able to have an actual graduation! I feel for them. I love how people are finding "out of the box" ways of celebrating!! That is awesome!

Oh lordy the hair!!! AHHHHHHH, I have been coloring my hair myself because I am too cheap to spend the money at a salon but oh lord do I need a haircut! I have curly hair and lots of layers so there is no way to a fudge a haircut here. I still go to work a couple days a week in a doctors office so I'm riding the struggle bus trying to look presentable!! Yikes!! So I understand ladies. The struggle is real!!! LOL!

So my son is on the TR, for those of you who don't know, he is one of the ones still on the ship standing watch on the reactor. He should be getting off soon to go into quarantine. He is looking forward to the down time. He feels good, just tired from not having any days off and his schedule changing daily. This too shall pass. It will be a memory for sure.

Interesting note, at dinner my Dad who was in the Navy in the 50's relayed his memory of dealing with the Asian Flu 1957-1958. He remembers being so sick he couldn't get out of his rack for 3 days. When he woke up there was a stale sandwich next to his face. Apparently one of his shipmates was worried about him and brought him some food. So sweet. Apparently this is not the first time we have had to deal with a pandemic. Just something I didn't know about until now.

Have a great Wednesday everyone!! :))

  • ProudOfK

Well I keep my hair long and have never colored it so no worries there for me. Our Shih Tzu dog on the other hand is another story. He is now almost 2 weeks overdue for his grooming and oh my is he looking shaggy. I’m a bit nervous about trying to cut it myself.

  • SubMom

We opted not to watch the meteor shower as we are still getting down to the 20’s here in Michigan. It’s a bummer because we both enjoy that sort of thing.

NNLori - hoping your son get some much needed rest. I love the memory your dad shared. That is so sweet and just goes to prove they are family.

so glad I could make everyone laugh. Dreading my Zoom Meeting today..... oh well what’s a girl to do :)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NNLori - glad to hear your son is symptom free and I'll bet he is exhausted....I hope he can get some down time soon.  B has a few nuke friends on the TR that he has been in contact with so we've gotten a few updates from him.  And I like your comment "riding the struggle bus".  I'm right there with you lol!

ProudOfK - our Marti girl (the boxer) is ok since she has short hair but our little JD (that we found in my work parking lot last July) is a different story!  He's got long hair and yes, he is a shaggy mop right now too lol.  We gave him a bath on Sunday but boy his hair is long.....and both of them need their nails trimmed which I definitely am afraid to do. My hubby's hair is getting long too - I guess we all have the shaggy look!

We should probably take a family picture - long hair, roots grown out, dogs shaggy and our masks on!  Definitely would be one to remember.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

CSW - I've never done yoga but I might have to give it a try.  My nephew's wife is also giving online yoga classes for anyone interested.

  • Northwoodsmom

JayDee659, I see you came back home from Florida. We have been working on bringing my parents home and the airlines keep canceling their flights. This is the 3rd flight we are rescheduling for them. They fly out of Sanford, I hope on the 30th. We wanted to drive down and pick them up but my brother said it would be safer to fly. Did you have that trouble? Just wondering.

  • Northwoodsmom

Marianne, I think if our weather would improve so would are physical activity. We need a little sunshine and heat so we can get out and do our lawn, gardening and just taking a walk would be awesome. I am tired of winter already, I've been hibernating for 4 months and quarantined for 2.

  • ProudOfK

B’sNukeMom - your ‘shaggy’ picture suggestion gave me a good laugh. If I didn’t laugh about it I think I’d cry so I think I’ll stick to laughing

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Gotta keep trying to laugh - yesterday kind of sucked and I thought I might cry a few times :(  But then I realize there are so many that have it worse than me so I managed to pull up my girl panties and get through the day.....I was just feeling "over" everything.  But today is a new day.....and a better day!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Or in this case - put on your boots!

  • Chipmunk

Playing catch up on the comments!!  I thought it was funny all the talk about hair, because I was actually thinking this morning that when we have sunshine and no rain again that I need to get my daughter outside to cut my hair. It is straight and I just let the grey come in, but it is getting way too long, especially with summer approaching.

NNLori - I know your sailor will appreciate the down time!! Thanks for sharing your dad's story.

MoMom - The comments about online Yoga classes have me wondering how you are doing?  To bad we couldn't set up a Zoom Nuke Mom meet up and have you lead us in an exercise class.

Northwoodsmom - I would not want to be in cold for that long, either!!

My husband had been enjoying the free Star Trek on CBS and introducing our youngest to the originals that he cut his teeth on!!

  • JayDee659

Northwoodsmom, we actually had a really nice drive.  With people staying home, traffic was minimal (breezed through Atlanta) and gas was as low as $1.19.  Food was no problem to find, all drive thru of course.  We had the dogs with us and I was thrilled that Loves Truck Stops have dog parks so my girls were free to run around for a bit during stops.  In this current world, I'd rather drive than get on a plane.

I hope you get your parents home soon.

  • New Adventures

    Morning all,

Yesterday was odd.  It was my busiest day in a few weeks.  No time even for food, in my house, and then I was informed I am furloughed as of Monday.  At least we will still have our health insurance and maybe now I will have time for some of the projects I have wanted to do.

B'sNukeMom-I injured my knee at work in Feb and with the world as it is have had all my ortho apts. cancelled (workers comp process sucks). I can't do much exercise as it hurts but maybe some limited Yoga would work.  Can you send me a message about your connection.

ProudofK-  if your puppies hair is interfering with it's eye try blunt noise scissors.  You can get them often near the tweezers at the store.  I have one shaggy doodle right now and I uses those to trim his face and ears in emergencies.   He is also 2 weeks past groomer.

Happy Thursday - let's make it a good one!

NewAdventures - I sent you a PM.  I'm sorry to hear you were furloughed - hopefully it's only for a short amount of time. And I hope your knee is nothing serious.

JayDee - wow, gas for $1.19 - that's crazy.  Our Costco is at $2.29 which is really cheap for us.

    Good Afternoon Everyone,

I just wanted to share some info about the face masks for the NNPTC. Just spoke to my sailor who is currently in power school. I had sent him some black cloth face masks to wear instead of the make-shift tshirt ones he was using. They are being issued masks by the command (at Nuc School) and he was issued one last week.

I had him ask if they would be allowed to wear the black ones I sent and he was told no. If they are issued one, they are to use the issued one to maintain uniform. So the black ones I sent him he can only use when he is in civilian clothes. Just wanted to share that news to everyone. He is not sure if everyone has been issued one yet however he was told that if/when issued one they are to wear that one with their uniform.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

  • Chipmunk

jes12joy - Thanks for the update on the face masks at NNPTC!

  • Northwoodsmom

jes12joy, my son said about the same thing and he is at A School. My only worry is they only gave them one mask and no instructions on cleaning them. My son said he had been wearing his for 2 weeks and hasn't cleaned it at all. I know there is a microwave in his room so I told him to boil water in a cup and to take it out and place his mask in it for at least 5 minutes then wring it out and hang it to dry. Boys, seems like they never think about things like that. Any ideas about how I can tell him how to clean them? He still never got the ones I sent and I had a return address on it but no tracking number because my hubby took it to the post office.

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - This came up in a conversation that I had with my husband when I was making the masks for my sailor and we were discussing the wire. His comment was that they needed to be washed everyday and hung to dry, and worn wet if need be. The point of washing is to wash away the virus. - He is no expert, just my intelligent husband that I trust for a lot of things.

So, my thoughts, rinse under water to wash away virus, boil as you indicated and then wash again with soap and water. Dry some with hair dryer and hang to dry.  (Yes, one more thing to add to their nightly routine.) Also, the CDC instructions might have some guidelines, but I know that everything I watched said to be sure to pull the mask away from your face and not let it touch your face. Wearing a mask for 2 weeks without washing!!! WOW not sure we are doing much for germ elimination here!!  LOL, we have to love our kids - good thing he has a great mom checking in on him!!

My heart is happy as I had a nice long conversation with my sailor today. Granted, I was helping him stay awake, but it is still good. The more I work at connecting with him in conversation over things that he is familiar with and I am trying to become - although, he still did not send me the list of books to read - the more we have things to discuss.

He also had a chance to connect at "just the right time" so that he could call and wish his one of his sister's happy birthday. It was a good day today. I hope yours was as well, and I had my RED on!

    Happy Monday!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.  We spent it by the pool.....outside of a little housekeeping we didn't really do anything else.  I have to admit it was quite relaxing.  Oh and I colored my roots - didn't turn out too bad lol!  I should make it another 4 weeks - now if I could just figure out how to cut my own hair everything would be great lol!

And C got accepted to grad school at MSU - she will be working on a project called "Impediments to Behavioral Change to Minimize Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species".  It's in the Wildlife and Conservation Biology Department. And the nice thing is it's an internship so she doesn't have to pay for the program and she gets paid to be in it - research for 2 years.  Very excited for her ;-D

Chipmunk - glad you had a nice long conversation with your sailor!  And even better that he could wish his sister happy birthday!  Makes for a happy heart <3

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Congrats to C, B'sNuke! Now, which school is MSU?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Thanks NancyJo - Michigan State!  But now this means they will for sure continue to be in MI for a bit more time too......

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom congratulations to C!  MSU is a fine school!  My oldest daughter and her fiancee also got an internship program for their PhD's and it worked out great. They don't pay a ton of money but it's enough.
