    Happy Tuesday!

Northwoodsmom - I'll bet that felt really good to sleep in!  Enjoy it while you can ;-D

Chipmunk - sounds like a nice weekend!  Glad you had some family time - hopefully you'll be able to visit your sailor soon too!

I also saw the sad news of Phoenixmom's husband passing.  I'm glad her sailor was able to spend some time with his dad during his final days.

    Happy Wednesday!

  • Chipmunk

Good afternoon everyone! I always have to smile at the Friday jokes. Since I am at home and all of my projects are here, I am always the opposite. Wednesday means my week is half gone and there is still so much more to accomplish. My daughter and I had a long conversation about decluttering on the way back to the airport. I have two children that are becoming minimalists and I grew up with two parents who lived through the depression and cherished family heirlooms, some which I just inherited - so I am having a really hard time with some letting go and other stuff is just paperwork. But I am plugging away!!

My husband just sent me a list of states that are unrestricted by the military. Unfortunately, Virginia was not one of them!

Northwoodsmom - Glad you had a chance to sleep in. Did I catch you had started your evening job?

    Happy Thursday!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Update on B&C's wedding.  So they are getting married now on the original date - 7/19/2020 but it will be in Michigan at her mom's house.  Just B&C, her mom and hubby and I.  They had changed the ceremony to 10/4/2020 (at the venue here in CA) but now they've changed it again to 5/16/2021.  It will still be a ceremony and reception at the venue on 5/16/21 but it will now be a "vow renewal" and this way all the friends and family can still be a part of it.  It's been crazy the changes they've had to make (due to Covid) but they are taking it all in stride.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes as planned now!

  • Northwoodsmom

Wow B's NukeMom I am glad that they were able to works things out. Those poor kids, my heart goes out to them. When they get through all this it will make their bond stronger for their future together. Michigan is beautiful this time of year.

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, I'm glad that B &C were able to work it out.  It will be beautiful. That's pretty much what my Nuke did, she and her hubby got married on base then we had a church ceremony planned for the day after Power School Grad.  Unfortunately there was that hurricane...  Hey I have lots of wedding supplies left, need any?

Speaking of my SIL, his sub pulled into Norfolk yesterday after a 6  month deployment.  Homecoming was very strange.  The families were sent a 20 min time slot when their sailor would be leaving the ship.  The families had to wait in their cars.  The sailors came out in groups of 10 or so.  My SIL is happy to be home!

My oldest daughter is on the wedding roller coaster.  It's Aug 29 in Virginia (the far western part of "normal" VA without crossing into WV).  She put a deposit on the venue the day before quarantine hit and the venue won't refund it so she's pressing ahead with plans.  One day she thinks it's all fine, the next she's in tears thinking about the lost deposits.  I keep praying that everything turns out okay for them!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - It is amazing how many different family and friend gatherings have been upset by all of the closures. All the best to B&C in their new married life together and even if it is just small gathering for now, may all things work out well for them to have the celebration they wanted with family and friends. I think the "vow renewal" service is a great idea!!

JayDee659 - I am not surprised at the restrictions with the sub arrival. From the information that I have been gleaning with my son's ship, they are still enforcing a lot of restrictions in Norfolk. It is all about the "bubble".

Hi all - Happy Friday!  I've got my RED on ;-D

We've been lucky that the venue they choose is being very accommodating in all this.  They've changed the date twice now and no issues.  And the good thing is B&C are taking it all in stride!  I'm looking forward to seeing them next month in MI for the ceremony but I'm still a little concerned about flying....I don't like flying anyhow and then throw in the pandemic and well, ugh!

JayDee - fingers crossed everything works out for your daughter.  It will definitely be something they will remember for a long time!  Glad to hear your SIL is back from deployment.  I know that the homecomings are definitely being affected by all this too.....crazy times right now that's for sure!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - I don't know about all of the airlines, but when my daughter flew this last week, she had to wear a mask the entire time she was on her flight, which thankfully was short. She said when the flight attendants were not looking, she would pull it down so she could breath easier!! :-)

  • The Hammer

Chipmunk... thanks for sharing that! I've purchased tickets to fly out to Seattle in July to see my sailor, which is a longer flight from Wisconsin. Wearing a mask for that many hours will be a challenge!

The Hammer - You are welcome! I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering if you were still going to be able to make your plans to see your sailor. I need to get more specific details from my sailor about his situation but I am fairly certain the family day the CO was planning has probably been put on hold for awhile.

pandalvr - You sent your message out through the general message to all and I don't know if others saw it. It came into my email feed. - My husband said that your son needs to contact his senior chief or master chief - even if he is on the ship and deployed. "They are the ones that take care of the men / sailors." Not sure how that works if he doesn't know their ship email. I would also suggest that he get ahold of the ombudsman. I realize they are more the liaison for the CO to the family but she still might be able to assist.  Your sailor should have had a sponsor when he went to his ship, but not all of them are as diligent and if the ship was deployed that may have been an issue as well. My son's ship was not deployed when he arrived in Norfolk and that was last year, so I really don't know how all of this works if their ship is deployed. In the past, I think they were flown to their ship if it was deployed - this entire COVID stuff stinks!! IMHO!

  • 3B'smom

pandalvr - What ship is your son assigned to?

  • pandalvr

    Eisenhower

  • The Hammer

I need some help! My sailor had his stuff moved by Mil Movers at the end of February. With COVID, shift work and long, long hours to prepare his sub for a move, he has been working 12-14 hour days for weeks. He wants to schedule the delivery of his stuff... but lots of offices are still closed. He is in Bangor, WA. Does anyone happen to have a number he can call or someone he can contact? Any leads are appreciated!!!

  • Chipmunk

The Hammer - do you know if your sailor has the number for his sub's ombudsman - I know this seems silly, but I know that our ombudsmen are constantly posting information to help out the families. If he doesn't have any information from his senior chief, or master chief as my husband said for pandalvr's son, then he might try the ombudsman. If you are not on that FB group, I would suggest requesting as well. My son gave the ombudsman our contact information, but my husband still had to send a request to her and then she forwards an email to the ship email for permission to add (at least that is how she says to do it on the FB page.)

What numbers does your sailor need? The one for Mil Movers? Is that a military mover? Also the FRG - family readiness group for his sub, might know. Look up DOD website also - I recall some hotline being posted some place, but I don't have it handy anymore. Sorry, best I can do.

Checking in! I haven't been on for a while (navigating the books for three businesses amid Covid-19 restrictions, having four millennial adults in and out of the house  + an extra dog since the pandemic began, and treading carefully through wedding woes and associated angst on behalf of my eldest son and his fiancee. JayDee and B'sNukeMom--I am anxious to hear how your experiences go!! In retrospect, these are good problems to have I guess. I just now read of the passing of Phoenixmom's husband--and my heart just broke. There are several of us who have been widowed. It is a long, long road to travel. May peace be with her, and with all of you who have experienced a loss. My 34th anniversary would have been a week from today. I count my blessings every day for the life I had with my husband--and yes, for the life I have now.

My youngest doodle, Rossi, is a total comic. Comic relief for these challenging times. Happily, my sailor--three weeks into Power School, is as happy as a clam--thriving in fact. Loves nuclear physics. Guess that's a good thing. Wish I could take him his golf clubs--the one thing he has requested. I miss him like CRAZY.

Proud of my middle son too! Yesterday he did a solo "endurance challenge" to raise money for World Central Kitchen--raised over $1600 and counting. He did a ten mile paddle on the reservoir, transitioned to a 45 mile bike ride, and finished with a 12 mile trail run. It was a gorgeous day too!!

May we all stay inspired. And strong. Love to each of you!

ShipOfDoodles - Good to hear from you!! Kuddos to your middle son for his accomplishment with the fund raiser. I feel for all of you navigating weddings. My daughter is a wedding planner, and trying to "get back to business" is hard as well.

    Happy Monday All!

ShipOfDoodles - thanks for the positive update!  Glad to hear things are going well and kudos to your middle son on his "endurance challenge".  The picture of your doodle made me smile!

The Hammer - I don't have any answers for you but I sure hope your son can track down his belongings!

I'm fine with wearing my mask on the plane - my husband not so much lol!  I guess I can say luckily we don't have a direct flight so we'll get a little break from the masks.

  • 3B'smom

I had a call from Big Kid yesterday. My momma heart is still happy! COVID-19 has made this deployment one for the record books.

  • Northwoodsmom

ShipOfDoddles, I love the picture of your dog relaxing on your deck. Right now I am fearful to let mine outside. We have been having trouble with bear. One of mine is 10 lb the other 20lb but they think the are giants and will go after anything. They are no match for a 300 + lb bear. Last night one came right up on our deck which is 15 feet off the ground. I am so glad your son is doing so well in power school. My son is still in A school just behind yours. He also seems to like the challenge and the intensity of his classes. Glad to hear from you.

  • Northwoodsmom

  • CSW

    Wow Northwoodsmom.

    Those are black bear, right?

  • Northwoodsmom

CSW, yes they are and they have no fear of humans at all. I went right up to the patio and he never even left until I ran and got my cow bell and rang that.  HI went out onto the front deck and he came within 12 feet of me trying to get into my feeders. I took them all down now in hopes of keeping them away.

  • CSW

Wow.  I've seen them in Minnesota in BWCA and they were skittish, but I hear when they live close to humans they get very familiar. I'm not sure I'd do too well with these neighbors of yours!

If that were a grizzly I think I'd move.

    You have my admiration!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Wow!  That bear is a little too close for comfort for me lol!

  • ProudOfK

Northwoodsmom - I think I’m very glad I live in the desert and not in Minnesota anymore. Although we didn’t see them in our part of the state. You sound so calm about it - not sure I’d be able to stay so calm.

  • The Hammer

We have a second home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin in a pretty remote location. We've had similar experiences with black bears on our deck. I've also come across them while taking walks with my black lab... who is over 100lbs. He just looked at the bear, then looked at me like... um... not going to engage with that one, so let's get outta here! There should be plenty to eat for them out there... but they do love a good feeder or two/three!

  • The Hammer

    Chipmunk - thank you!

  • Northwoodsmom

ProudOfK and The Hammer this is actually the first time I have seen them not take off when they encounter people. Usually they come out at dusk or night. I try to remember I am the one in there territory. Actually they are beautiful to watch and once the berries are out we won't see them very much. They are only aggressive if they feel threatened or if they have Cubs, like all mom's they are very protective.

Wisconsin is a beautiful place and the air is so much different than other places I've been. It must be all the trees, it has a really clean crisp smell and feel. Everyone should visit it at least once.

  • Chipmunk

The Hammer - You are welcome!! I hope that your son is able to get ahold of someone and resolve his move issues.

Northwoodsmom - When I have the chance to travel north, I will connect with you, I would love to visit WI!

ShipofDoodles - Your campground sounds like another destination stop when I have all of the kids out of the house and time to travel!

  • Northwoodsmom

Chipmunk that would awesome, I really hope you get the chance to travel and come for a visit. I will keep the bears at bay. Of course the fall is super beautiful. All the colors would take your breath away.

  • JayDee659

I'm a Michigan girl myself and while it's not the same as Wisconsin, northern MI is similar.  Love the northern woods and wilderness.  I've been to WI once for a brief trip to the Dells and would love to explore more of the state.

  • Northwoodsmom

JayDee659 I agree, we are 20 miles from the UP of Michigan and you can't tell where one begins and the other ends. Both of my children were born in MI so we call them Yoopers. Mackinaw is simply breath taking. With all the turmoil in our country it is simply a peaceful slice of heaven.

  • Northwoodsmom

Just wondering if anyone heard from Velvetenor from New Jersey? Haven't heard from her for awhile and was just wondering how she was doing. Her son was just ahead of mine.

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - It will be another year before I can travel freely, I still have one child at home, but it sound like a wonderful plan. And no, I have not heard from Velvetenor for awhile.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

As a kid I spent a summer in Wisconsin - my Aunt & Uncle lived there.  I believe it was West Allis.  Got to go to the WI Dells, a Brewers game - when they hit a home run I remember someone would slide down into a big bucket of "beer", went fishing - just had a lot of fun.  My hubby was born in Madison but his family moved to CA when he was only a few weeks old (his dad was in the Navy). He's a Packer fan through and through - even a stockholder ;-D  We are looking forward to visiting MI next month but won't have a lot of time for exploring.  I also spent a summer in MI with my grandma but I don't remember much about it.  Picked a lot of blueberries and peaches I do know!

Haven't seen Velvetenor around either....hopefully she'll chime in.

I hope everyone is staying safe.

I want to say WELCOME HOME from deployment to the Sailors aboard the USS TRUMAN.  They are arriving in Norfolk as I type this. (This was my son's ship.)

  • bigsky21

    Hi all,

Just reading all your posts about WI/MI; my dad lives outside Ladysmith, just north of Eau Claire....he has a place on the lake and it is beautiful for sure. I love visiting and we’re pretty much guaranteed a white Christmas up there, but I am not a cold weather girl and I love coming home to my warm weather :) Used to go camping in the UP a lot - those were some great adventures!

My big news today - just heard from my son, he got his dolphins!

  • Chipmunk

bigsky21 - WooHoo!! BZ to your sailor!!!

Welcome Home to all of our sailors on the USS Truman!!

    Candy36 - Welcome aboard!!

  • Northwoodsmom

bigsky21, how exciting, congrats to your Sailor on his dolphins. That is quite the accomplishment. Yes I am very close to the UP, alot of skiing and ski jumping up here. If you hate winter it's not the place you would want to be.

B'sNukeMoM I love blueberry picking in the UP, we go every August with our whole family and then after we get the berries cleaned we make homemade blueberry pie. You got my mouth watering just thinking about it. I pray your wedding  turns out beautiful and you have a wonderful safe trip.

  • momc

I haven’t been on in a while, but read your comments everyday.  It’s great to hear all your stories.  Northwoodsmom, I know what you mean about bears coming to visit.  If I forget to bring our bird feeders in at night, we can expect them to visit.018336CF-41B8-4FF0-8F8E-9E8B9DCC0003.jpeg

Bing in Northern WIsconsin has its perks, especially in the summer time.  I’m not big on the winters, especially when there is lots of snow and then the cold.  Although, my sailor does miss it as he enjoys skiing.

Bigsky21 - congrats to your son on getting his dolphins.  It is an honor for our sailors to receive.  They work so hard to get them.

B,sNukeMom - happy to hear the wedding is still on.  So much confusion and hardship with this virus, it is great to have some happy news.

Welcome home to the Truman   I am sure they are happy to be  back.

Hoping that my sailor can visit soon as it has been almost a year since we have seen him.  I know some of the travel restrictions are lifting for the military, so I am hoping that we will know soon if and when he can visit.

    Stay strong and well moms

  • SubMom

The Hammer - our son is stationed in WA. With that said his car delivered 2 weeks after he reported. I was in contact with the Ombudsman who was a great source of information. In the case of my son he’s in the BEQ’s. With that said the car could not be dropped off on base so he arranged to meet at a shopping center just off base. Also your son can talk to his sea dad - he might be able to help.

  • The Hammer

Thanks SubMom! We've contacted the Ombudsman as well as every other office I could find a number to. Problem right now is that he is working from 4am to 6-7pm, 6 days per week. The offices that you would normally call are operating on email only and are slow to respond.

He'll figure it out... but he signed a lease for an apartment that he is moving into next week and he won't have a bed or any of his stuff. He is just pretty frustrated... cause his options are limited.

I appreciate the help and advice!

  • SubMom

The Hammer - the schedule that they maintain is crazy. Best of luck to him!

  • SubMom

The last few weeks have been BUSY! The shelter in place was lifted just in time for my mother in laws 86 birthday. Her kids and spouses, a couple of grandkids and great grandkids were able to celebrate with a pizza party in her yard. We have been working with our insurance company and builder to get our siding and roof replaced from the hail storm that hit us in April. Then I got word that the CEO of my company passed away. It is a family company and her son, daughter and two grandsons work for the company. We decided we needed a break last weekend and headed North. We found a wonderful nature preserve and visited the only waterfall in lower Michigan. We love to find all the little unknown things and places. This time it was a metal bust of George Washington sitting in the middle of a field next to Moran Metal Works. We were so surprised that we forgot to take a picture! Hope everyone is healthy!
