A few more from the pumpkin patch ;-D

They made it to Montana for their little vacation.  I'm here in MI with my mom.  Lots of doctor appointments.  She may have a heart murmur so tomorrow I take her back to the heart dr so they can put a monitor on her for 5 days.  then they decide the next step. Her mental well being is not doing well....I've had to tell her that she will have to continue to stay with B&C until I move back here after the first of the year.  Conversation didn't go great but we had a real good heart to heart last night and she understands that we are just concerned about her safety.  There is absolutely NO way she can live alone now..   It's sad how quickly everything changed.  Literally in 1 months time things just kind of fell apart.  I just need to hurry up and get my replacement up to speed so I can get back here.

B'sNukeMom - I'm so sorry to hear about your mom.  I hope your replacement is a quick learner!  Thank you for letting us know what is going on, so that we can keep y'all in our prayers.

MomofJoseph - thank you!  Today we met first time with her new primary dr and she was wonderful!  She definitely sees the issues with my mom and I didn't even have to say much at first.  She wants to meet with her monthly for a while and then every 3 months.  Also referring her to a neurologist for the dementia.  My DIL is sure going to be busy with all these appointments.  Thank goodness she has fantastic organizational skills from her time as a nuke!

B'sNukeMoM, Sending prayers and love to you. It is so hard to be far away. Glad you are able to be with your mom. Life can change on a dime.  Hopefully things will fall in a routine soon. Thinking of you .

Well today we spent most of the day (11-5) in the ER.  Had a rough couple of nights - found out mom has diverticulitis.  It's not been pretty if you know what I mean.  I swear it's just been one thing after another......still having a bit of difficulty getting her to understand the dementia diagnosis and how she won't be able to live alone going forward.  One day at at time....

B’sNukeMom - thinking of you and your family. You don’t know me but my hugs are magical, so I am told, so I am sending you a great big one for you and your mom ❤️

This is literally becoming the hardest thing I've had to go through.  Every day it is something else....And it's so hard now with me being back in CA and my mom in MI.

B'sNukeMom - I am so sorry to hear about your mother! It is very difficult, I went through it with my mother and father, all from a distance. My prayers are with you and your family!

My son graduates from Basic Dec. 4th and from what I understand, will head straight to SC. Does anyone know what happens over Christmas? Will he be allowed to come home for a few days? All the posts on the message board are over 10 years old so I wasn’t sure if the policy has changed. 

Gwen, do you think that will be the case for all the students? He was under the impression he’d only be given a few days - but that was from his recruiter, so I’m not sure how accurate their information is. 

Laurette - it varies on who gets what time off.  Some might get the first "half" of the Christmas stand down and others might get the second "half".  Keep in mind that they do have to have people there standing watch.  Your son will be told once he arrives. 

Just remember though - Semper Gumby - always flexible!

And just to give you an idea - my son PIR'd back on 12/21/2012.  He was able to fly straight home to CA with us after PIR and didn't have to be back to Goose Creek until the first week of January 2013.  It was just the luck of the draw, but it was sure nice for us!

My son graduates Power School on Friday.  Anyone else have someone graduating Power School on Friday?

Just for comparison information, my son PIR’d 8/22/2024. Arrived in SC 8/24/2025. Graduated A school 12/13/2024. Was able to take leave from 12/20/2024 - 1/4/2025. He’s in prototype in NY now and just submitted leave for the second half of holiday stand down which will start a couple days after Christmas. As B’sNukeMoM says though Semper Gumby because there are no set rules. Congratulations to you and your son!

Laurette - my son is in A school at GC right now, and has Dec 20th - Jan 4th off.

Something to consider is that your son may not go directly to GC after PIR, so may not get the same “leave” the others are getting. That said, if he’s stuck at Great Lakes for a while there might still be some leniency since the sailors don’t really have much to do besides clean stuff. I don’t know if he’ll get “leave” to go home, but depending on your situation, he may get enough liberty to make it worth your while to go see him. It isn’t the same as having him home, but it’s something to think about 😊 Semper Gumby!

For context, my son PIR’d this summer right before the 4th of July holiday. He had to wait at Great Lakes for nearly a month before GC was ready to take him. Because of the holiday and the fact that there wasn’t much for him to do, they were very generous with his liberty. He ended up w/several days off. People that shipped out right after PIR only had a day or two with loved ones. Not all of my son’s liberty was overnight and he still had to stay w/in a 50mi radius of the base but it was better than just seeing him for a day.

Seahawks12 - Congratulations!!!  I hope you enjoy the Power School graduation ceremony!  We loved it.  (And I love the travel mug I bought at the ceremony!)

Gwen - I know you are super-excited to have your son home for Christmas!

Laurette - As the others said, we never know exactly what the plan is because things can change on a dime :-)  BUT, my son graduated Nov 24, 2021 and went to Goose Creek Nov 30th.  He was able to come home from Dec 17 to Jan 2 (although he got covid and was told to stay home until Jan 5).  He didn't start his A school classes until Jan 26 since he got delayed at home.

When he was in Power School, he only got a week during the Holiday Stand down.  He requested the second week (and has done so every year) because he wants the Sailors with kids at home to spend Christmas with the kids.

I hope you get the full two weeks with your Sailor this year!

Thank you everyone!  We will not be able to go to Power School graduation but he will be home for Christmas!  It's been way too long since we've last seen him!!  Your friendship and well wishes mean a lot to me.  I don't post often but I visit the this site daily.

Be forewarned I am going to have a lot of really random questions. For example, is there anywhere that explains all the abbreviations? How did you learn them all? What is PIR, PT, and  NSU? 
Also, another really really random question, is like to buy nice sheets on a Black Friday sale - is there a specific color?

Hi, Laurette!  We love random questions.  I was just about to post a list of acronyms, but then I saw you found a list.  But feel free to ask.  None of the lists are completely inclusive.

I didn't know you could mail sheets to your SR.  That wasn't allowed when my son was at BC - 3 years ago.  

OHHHHHH!  I thought this was the BC moms page!  That makes so much sense!
