This site is for families and friends of Salilor Recruits with PIR THURSDAY, December 29, 2011. This is a great way to share information, concerns and to connect as we continue the journey through bootcamp to PIR and beyond.
Michelle, it would depend on the a lot of circumstances, like when they arrive, and where they attend their A school. When our group came home on leave (12/17/10) and returned back to their A school base, there were different options available for different sailors. Some sailors were able to call the Quarterdeck at their A school and if they had someone available, they would send someone to pick them up at the airport. Other sailors had to take a cab on their own to their A school (some shared cabs, if they came in at the same time) Some sailors were able to hitch a ride with other sailors, at the airport, who happened to be returning at the same time. Other sailors were able to contact the USO to secure a ride. It all depends on the circumstances of your sailor at the time that they do arrive. It is ultimately your sailor's responsibility to secure transportation to their A school, but as you can see, there are different ways that they can do that.
My son had planned to take a cab from the airport and made sure he had enough cash with him, in that event. Once he arrived at the airport, he was lucky enough that another sailor on leave, offered him a ride to the base.
Thanks for the info he will stay in the GL for A school My plan is to send him back a few days early just in case any idea what a cab would cost? As you can tell I really want him home for leave so if I make it easy for him maybe he will decide to come home.
Michelle, no, I'm sorry I don't know that, as my son actually went to Pensacola for A school. I would suggest that you give Sarge a call and maybe he could give you an idea of what the cost is from the airport to GL. Everyone has wonderful things to say about him. As the time gets closer, you may even be able to make arrangements for Sarge to go get him. His number is 847-212-0246
Dang…I’m getting lost! LOL I was supposed to check someone’s CD clock and also post a blog comment explaining "Liberty vs. Leave"…can’t remember where! So I am just going to post it! It’ll be in the Discussion Forum Ladies. Please check your CD Clocks…I will try too but may not get the chance for a while…setting up 01/06 PIR today hopefully (Yay!) they’re supposed to be set for 9 AM PIR day…thanks!
Michelle, Sarge runs a cab (shuttle) from the hotels to RTC. Many of the families hire him for PIR day. I personally did not use his services, but only because we had rented a car. I do know that everyone who has hired him, just loves him. I believe that he is retired military and is great with the sailors and their families. He has also recently started a Meet & Greet of his own. I would recommend that you call him and I bet that he will probably know exactly how much the fare is from GL to the airport.
Sarge's rates are alot cheaper than a taxi from the Chicago airport for returning sailors to A School...and they love him since he is 20 years retired Army, has been in that area for a LONG time, and loves the sailors!
This might sound like an odd question, but can we send our recruits news articles off the internet? My daughter is a HUGE Penn State fan and an even bigger Joe Paterno fan. She was at the game the week before she left. If there is anything she would be interested in hearing about it would be that story. I thought I could just print the article off and send it with my letters.
Oh, it's home again and home again, America for me! I want a ship that's westward bound to plough the rolling sea To the blessed land of Room Enough beyond the ocean bars, Where the air is full of sunlight and the flag is full of stars. ~Henry Van Dyke
Good morning, all. I added a BattleStations discussion group up top. Take time to familiarize yourself with their final test!
Ruth, I agree with Lala. Some RDCs do not want the SRs getting "outside" news and will tell them so. So I would print it on paper, like Lala said, and see if that is ok. Many RDCs don't mind them receiving this, as long as it is positive news...no negative news! :-) They need to maintain their focus!
Sure wish my mail ran earlier than 1:30p!!!! My son's gf got TWO letters today. Happy for her and will be running to my mailbox as soon as I hear the mail-lady. 8-)
I hope I get a letter today as well, but my mailman seems to come at different times. He normally comes at 4:00pm, so yesterday he decided to come just before 2:00, so I went to the post office to mail my daughters letter yesterday. I am pray I get a letter today
@ Natalie's mom - ME TOO!!! We live on a dead end dirt road so I can hear the mail car/jeep coming. I will meet her at the foot of the drive. OR I could hunt her down...pretty sure I can figure out that route. lol
REAL LETTERS RuthL! My son is div. 021 and I am pretty sure the brother div is 022. So hoping all were able to get letters in the mail this past Sunday.
ArNavyMom@ you are now officially my new best friend! Of course I have meetings after school and then an appointment so I won't get home until 5. I will be climbing out of my skin until then.
It is WACKY WEDNESDAY CONTEST on U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command site on facebook page. This is noon cst every Wednesday. They post a distorted picture and you guess what it is. Shot in the dark but someone always wins!
Your answer MUST be posted in the same thread as the question and NOT as a separate post. YOU MUST POST YOUR ANSWER IN THE SAME THREAD AS THE QUESTION! Separate posts will be deleted.
The winner earns a picture of your recruits division. 8-)
in the search box type in "U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command". I don't remember how I was added...via friend req. or "like" page.
Both Tuesday and Wednesdays are contest days and you have a chance to win - the prize being you get a picture taken of your recruits division. in box me if you have a problem as i can add you a friend on fb and you can find the page thru my page.
Happy Day! I just opened a letter from our SR it was thrilling. I posted more under my son's ship/div. Prayers to all of you with PIR of 12/29 for letters soon.
We got our second letter!! I love to hear from him but get emotional when i read how much he misses home. Never thought it would be that way and neither did he. He kept saying he could not wait to be gone! I guess he is realizing that we were not so bad to put up with.
No letter today, but so happy for those of you that have. I will keep checking that box and keepmy fingers crossed. I feel like I did when I was a kid waiting for Santa!
No letters came today, so maybe tomorrow, but I will have to wait until I get home from work since I have to work in the office tomorrow instead of home. So happy for everyone else that rec'd letters today
WELL Hello all- got our first REAL letter. He sounded kinda sad, but ok! said he had feet issues, but did not want to go to medical. Oh for goodness sake, that is the field he are going into! I understand his reluctance to speak up and get behind on things, but he can't go through BC with issues that could make a big difference. Just gonna keep writing to him and pepping him up best that we can. From this point that is all that CAN be done. I hope everyone that did not get a letter yesterday gets theirs today. They may sound homesick andsuch, but this is soooooo common. Encourage, encourage, fire those kiddos UP!!! Ok ok! That is the "old" cheerleader in me. hahahahaha! Have a blessed day.
In honor of not only tomorrrow, but to honor always! Here is a two-fer( just cause I couldn't decide):
How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes! ~Maya Angelou
I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask, "Mother, what was war?" ~Eve Merriam
First letter came yesterday. He was able to write it Sunday. He said training would start in 2-3 days. He got to gl on 10/27 so I guess it was hurry up and wait until they were done with processing. His letter was short but he sounded homesick. I have been sending letters and cards so I hope he gets those soon!
Good morning everyone, I will be subbing today for some very sweet (I hope) 3rd graders. I will be back this afternoon. I hope you all have a great day and get lots of letter :-)
momshousedivided: These early days are when letters/calls can be a little down or dejected. They are being yelled at, moved along, and sometimes they wonder if they can do anything right. That all changes during training week 4 (about 5-6 weeks after they arrived) when they turn the corner and the breakdown process is over...buildup process has begun. So just hang tight!
Holly: I know some stay in Libertyville. I would mapquest/googlemap the distance, but I don't think it is that far away. Maybe 20 minutes or so? Not sure so check it out.
Good morning all. Praying for our PIR 12.29.11 recruits AND for YOU! Those that received letters yesterday - HOORAY! Those that didn't - YOU WILL SOON and it will be very comforting seeing your loved ones handwriting. I caught myself smelling the letter (only AFTER my son's dog took a big whiff!) I thot to myself - self, maybe it smells like him. NOT. lol
Have a super day and go find a picture or piece of art your recruit made for you from grade school. S-M-I-L-E - your kid is being molded into a U.S. Sailor and that is a tough journey followed by an awesome accomplishment!
Heard this great quote today and thought it would be good to share, I sent it off to my son just in case he needs some encouragment;
Your biggest challenge isn't someone else, Its the ache in your lungs, the burning in your legs and the voice inside you that yells"I Can't" but you do not listen, you just push harder...then you hear that voice fade away and start to whisper "I Can" that's the moment you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are. So proud of our Boys!!!!
My daughter called and said she is being discharged because of TMJ in her jaw. Is there anything she can do? She is heart broken all her dreams fading out of reach.
Love your posts, ArNavyMom and Michelle. Very inspiring and had me going "YES YES!" So true! Michelle: I just had a talk with my sailor son earlier this week about the "power" within him. He sometimes doubts the Lord's power in his life, and when telling me how well he was doing at work, I talked to him about this. I pray each morning that my boys realize that it is not THEIR power, but the Lord's power THROUGH them that will get them through life. Of course, I need to stand in front of the mirror as I say this and I remind myself of that in my moments of struggle!
Adirondack: I am so sorry...if she calls you again, ask her to request sign a waiver so you all can talk to the "powers that be" up there about this. Otherwise, you can't be involved...only she can. She can fight this through Legal. The problem is: During the fight, she will remain at bootcamp and it can take a while. Maybe she can request another opinion on the TMJ by another dr? Please join the group "Ship 5 (formerly 17)" on N4Moms. Just go to the GROUPS tab above and put that in the search bar. There are ladies on there to help you...and lots of info.
Again, I am so so sorry and hope that if this is something that is fixable, she can obtain a waiver from the Navy so she can re-enlist...if she can't stay in now, which is my hope for her.
AdirondackD - yes...everything dianne said...please do. There are some great moms who have stayed on the Ship 5 group who's recruits have been discharged...one in particular TFAN2. It's wonderful that they do. I've spent some time on there and it is VERY important that she have the proper discharge/reenlistment codes. How you exit the Navy is just as important as how you enter.
