Hello tidefan - Happy to hear your son has healed and is in Groton. our son loves Groton, he has recently entered A school. Our soon to be submariners go through quite a bit of basic sub training before A school. I am sure your son will soon truly enjoy Groton.
Britbrat - I am a Momma. I wish I could be more helpful with the spouse questions. Love to have ya here, perhaps there is a spouse of Groton website and they will be more helpful! Good luck, I hope all goes well for you and your family.
May God guide and bless ALL of our Sailors and families.
My prayers go with your son, Yolanda. May all good things come to him when he gets home. Remind him to be strong because it will probably be tougher at first when he gets there and when he gets into the grove he will be better for having been in the military. Good Luck to him and Thank him for his service to America with a big hug. I know you will!
I just talked to my son. The power is back on. I told him to pack a go bag, in case they lose power in the night. He's only 18 and And thinks it's a blast.
Hello tidefan! That is great news that your son has healed and is moving along in his Navy career. By the way I also remember you from Boot Camp. Glad to have you here with our group. I'm sorry I don't remember what Division your son was in when he was injured? Mine was 214.
We talked to our son this week and he told us when they were having the "Polar Vortex" they had them out shoveling snow. At one point he took a glove off and he immediately felt prickling and stinging in his hand and when he went to put his glove back on and it had froze (the glove that is!)
Those dorms are really old and sometimes they have to go to the gym to take a hot shower. It's a good thing they are young and have a good sense of humor - I would not be happy at all if every time I wanted water or lights and heat, I had to collect my clothes and walk in the dark and cold, to another building. It's just a wonder to me how some of these sailors are not getting pneumonia. Oh the things we did when we were young, I can't do now.LOL
Just got done snowblowing and shoveling with the neighborhood. Almost a foot of the white, fluffy stuff. Swapping out the wet gloves, getting the fire pit going and now its time for a night cap with friends among the swirling snow and a hot tub. This is the good stuuff... ; )))
Johanna, Johanna, that is the good life indeed!! HAHAHAHA We get down to 32 here in TX but no snow (so far) never shoveling snow! And you just make it sound like so much fun! Have a night cap for me!!!!! :-) and hot tub.... uhmmmm how nice! Enjoy!!!!! NMH ;)
navymom2013 your comment on "showers" reminds me of when my Sailor Son came home for Christmas and this is what I got from him. I was downstairs making breakfast and heard him stir upstairs (OK, stomp, a beautiful strong and brave stomp ;) and called to him. I always scream (I don't shout and I don't do whispering either hahahaha) Deh-SAH-U-No (desayuno means breakfast in Peru, Spanish) and my Son just laughed and told me how much he missed that call (sniff, sniff, getting teary eyed just thinking about it) and he said he was going to take a quick shower and be down for breakfast (11am Central). So I was taking my sweet little time, things are slower here in TX, when bam! not even 7 min. later he is showered and dressed and standing right behind me! HAHAHAHA I said WOAH BESSIE!!! That was fast! He started laughing heartily and said that's just the way he is used to taking a shower these days! I started asking him, like a good mother, from head to toe, did you wash your hair? Did you wash under your arms? Did you wash your feet? Did you brush your teeth? and each time he would shake his head and say, yes moooom yes, with a big grin on his face! So, I find comfort in believing that even if his room is cold or the water cold, he won't be staying too long under it. And he ALWAYS smells clean! :D I, like you, also worry about bronchitis and pneumonia. God bless our beautiful brave and strong Sailor Sons! BIG HUG!
Navymom2013, aren't you in TX too? You must be North Texas, I'm SE TX
Kevsmom, good thing your Son has red hot blood running through his veins! :-) hard to imagine that a glove would freeze that fast! We are having 32 degree weather this night and I have my Heat set on 73 degrees because I'm not used to this cooooold weather! HAHAHA God bless you and yours, Love,
HAHAHAHA Ginger Matt's mom, 18 and on top of the world!!!! So true!! We couldn't do it now, but I remember enduring camping in cold weather and rain just to spend time with friends and family and had a "blast". Lord have mercy! How did we ever do it? HAHAHAHA God bless
Oh my, just reading all your posts makes me realize my poor Son must have been without power too, but I didn't get the email :-) Memo? :-) Letter? :-)
I spoke to my Son in the morning around 5:50am, that would be yesterday by the time some of you may read this, and he was in good spirits and concerned that I'd been up the whole night. I told him I was fine and would prob sleep the morning away. By the way, NEVER take a 24 hr allergy (Loritadine) medice at 5pm, It WILL keep you up 24 hrs! HAHAHA My allergies were so bad I had to take it no matter what time it was.
So I didn't even put it together that if it was going to be 32 here, it would be even colder in Groton! Bless their hearts, all our Sailor Sons! I hope they stay warm.
mrsb, I am so glad we decided to get our Sons all the under armor and long john stuff, it sure is coming in handy as I read the posts. Good Christmas presents this year. We'll have to brainstorm with all the NavyForMoms again for this coming Christmas so we can get great ideas like we did this year.
Maybe it will be the Sub Moms by then, as our Sons might be already at their boats, with Kevsmom93 too and many others on here. But that is yet to come so lets enjoy them today!!! :-) God bless
ProudNavyMom#1 - you are so funny about your son at breakfast. My son too has learned to cut his 20 minute showers he used to take at home with his dad hollering about the water bill down to a very short one and I have never seen him eat so fast either. We had a steak the first night home and I never even saw him cut it with the knife and it was gone. He said that they have to eat quickly and wash and dress fast. He said one time his alarm did not go off and he did the quickest time he has ever done. Even he was amazed. I am in Florida and that is alot like Texas in the weather. Today it is cold for us and the high will be 50 degrees all day. Tonight it could freeze but we are along the water and it is usually warmer here. The last time I had plant damage was three years ago.
I have two coats and never really wear them but gloves and a hat are important because although it is not that cold, we have sea breezes and they go right thru you. You take care and one day we will meet, I hope. Our sons are probably buddies. My son likes Groton so much, he asked to be based there or Ga.
Quite a difference - let's see which or either that he gets when he graduates in the summer. He is waiting class up now. My son gave me a hard time for getting so many packages of winter underwear too - what you want to bet he is wearing all of them now.
ProudNavyMom, I just love reading your posts!!! You are just too funny!! My son did revert back to his 20-30 minute showers when he was home at Christmas. He used to just lay in the bathtub with the shower running on him-I think he went back to sleep a couple of times! He said it was pretty cold and a lot of snow when I talked with him last night. He said he's glad I got him the long underwear-oh the practical things they need and don't want but are later happy to have!!! Just got to love all our Sailors!!! :)
FYI. The sub school barracks are being renovated. Some are closed (and my son got lucky and got in a boater's barracks when he arrived). And when those closed ones are reopened, I am guessing they will move on to others, and move guys around. My son has had no complaints, but he has pretty cushy living, 2 guys share a room with a bathroom, kitchenette, and separate bedrooms with doors. He hasn't said anything about power outage or anything. So I know some of these guys have some rough moments, but like someone said, they are young, and probably mostly laughing about their issues. It is still better conditions than in Sub, in most ways!
kevsmom- thanks for the welcome. My son was in div 15. he is still at GL waiting on his orders. He is working and enjoying it so far.He worked with the new arrivals last night
Yolanda - I keep you son in my prayers for a safe trip HOME and a ALL good things for his new journey. God guide and bless you and yours !Thank your son for us for his unselfish service to AMERICA - Hooyah!
Hi Lani - I am in Dunedin. I wish I were a little further south because in the morning it will be about 37 degrees. Now that is cold to us Floridians!
Annette - The sub school barracks NEED to be renovated. My son is a health food freak. He mixes all his own smoothies when he can but he doesn't even have a kitchen and his microwave is broken. I wish they would send him to the boater's barracks - maybe they will once he graduates from A-School.
mrsb - you know we all have some of the same changes happening to our sons.
I really have to hand it to the Navy - I have been trying for over 20 years and in less than 6 months the Navy has these guys cleaning their own toilets.
I really have to thank them for making men out of boys. Mine is still a bit immature and naive in some things, but he is starting to get the big picture.
Mrsb your Son is so blessed to be in boaters barracks. Mine said he wished he was! HAHAHA
NAVYMOM2013 my son was looking for the pail of water and mop to clean my kitchen and downstairs bathroom floors while he was here. I have a pic of him (for my eyes only. He made me promise. So humble. I bet y'all's are buff, fit, strong looking as mine :) He remembered where I keep them ;) only this time he actually picked them up instead of stepping over them HAHAHA
I, am also grateful to our Navy for making them real men!!
Oh BTW, it will be 28 here tonight & tomorrow in TX!!! Friday, I guess that would be tomorrow, it's supposed to ice over! Mercy. Wayyy toooo cooold for me too, chatter chatter chatter
Pls pray for my Son he has a final test Thursday so he can hurry up and wait for class up ACU. I will be praying for all our young men having this test so they can all move forward in their Navy careers. I am so proud of them all.
God bless us all my dear loved ones in Groton
(Thank you for trying to keep up with all my jumping around and many times not making sense on my posts) <3
ProudNavyMom, I wonder if my son is taking a test too? He doesn't ever tell me those things! Are our boys in the same class? Mine said he should be done with techno this week then acu for A school. I wish I really knew!! Oh and for the record, my son didn't clean anything or fold anything when he was home. I kind of wanted to see him fold a t shirt! When he came home he left everything in the living room; looked like his sea bag exploded! I did ask him to take it all up to his room before Grandma came! Some things will never change I guess!
My son had a button missing on his shirt..drove him nuts. I watched him sew it on with tears lol. He also did all is own dishes. He told me he cleans the room before inspection, that way he knows it done right!!!!
GOD BLESS THE NAVY
HAHAHA mrsb, you just crack me up!! I guess a "little talk" with my Sailor went a long way ;) He came home and his older Sister had emptied drawers and closet space for him and first thing he did the next morning was put everything away. When I peeked in, like any good mom would ;), it was all folded nicely and rolled up in the drawers? That was a new one on me. When he packed his sea bag to go back, which I tried to not cry through, to no avail, he was folding his clothes flat, and I asked him to teach me. Pants folded, t shirts and undies rolled, shirts folded in a nice flat fold. HAHAHA I am so proud of that boy! We gotta love them whether they put away and fold or not! They are ours!!! HAHAHAHA God bless them
Re the test, yes, he did great on Techno test yesterday! Thank you all for the prayers, and he is in ACU for March or April for A school. Kevsmom, I think our kids are caught up with yours now, all ACU. I think. I do believe they are on the same path now. So proud of them.
A few min. age he texted me about invite list for the wedding :/ I am happy, but...well...my baby... sniff, sniff I love his fiancee, she is great! So sweet and full of joy and fun!! They do grow up! God bless them and their relationship.
Now, I am excited about him asking me to help with this part of the wedding :-) He is so thoughtful and knows what it means to me. I don't even know the date yet, but I will help when they need me to. :-)
ProudNavyMom#1...yay! My son tells me they are actually in N6 now, not ACU. I don't know if that stands for something, but my son said it is "upper sub school". I asked how it compares with ACU as to work and the 6 hour watches they had, he said he heard more work, no watches other than their regularly scheduled ones. I meant to ask how long A school is.
So am wondering how many here have boys on radio hold? That's the next class for my son. I think ProudNavyMom's son is but not sure who else is. I get so confused with all these different jobs! Geeze!! thanks for your patience! :)
oops! I hit send on the txt to my Son instead on holding it as a draft for tomorrow... :D Maybe I'll get to hear from me sooner than expected... God bless us all!
ProudNavyMom, I think radio hold and A school are the same thing. Mine said he should be done in September/October. Let's wait and see what your son says!! I wish they would all use the same language!
mrsb, HAHAHAHA!! Yes! Same language would help! Annette, Sonar is AWESOME!!!
OK, here is what I got, mrsb, you are correct, radio and A are the same. They go to school the longest though. and still be done by Sep/Oct like you mention on your post.
N6 is just where they place them when they don't have a class open for the radio men. N6 is the department for students in A school or awaiting A school. Radio takes the longest because the school is really long. and the wait to get in is long as well. "Radio hold" is pretty much ACU but it's dedicated to those students that are going to be "radiomen".
Read it as many times as you need to. It took me five or six times and right now typing it to finally make sense of this.
Kevsmom, will your Son do Sonar or Radio? Just wondering :D
God bless them all as they wait to see where our Lord leads them. God bless us Mommas for hanging in there and praying for all in our Navy and Military. Big Hug!!
Hi Everyone. I was hoping to get some information. My son will be graduating A school (navigation) on Feb. 13 and leaving on Feb 14 for Georgia for training on a specific type of sub and then to Washington state. We would like to go to graduation but I don't have any details (exact time & place, how we get on base, best place to stay, etc) I've asked my son and he says he doesn't know but will get back to me when he knows more. I've never been to Groton so any help would be appreciated. Thanks
My son is also navigation but is only in att school, do they all go to another school after that. Ive been there 2 times and stay in Mystic holidsy in about 8 mins away
The navy lodge is 5 min. From base if u stay there ur son just needs to go before u get there or when u arrive and sign u in. It is really nice. My son is in GA now he is navigation. The school in GA is @ three months. When u go on base u have to be escorted by him unless u have military ID . I do not know about graduation but probably leave u a pass at the gate. My son was supposed to go to Washington now he is not sure his orders may have changed waiting to hear, he was upset at first but the navy sends them where they want. Just praying he gets original orders.
annmarie - Hooyah for soon to be A school completion! Our son is nav too! He graduates A school in May. Well, when we visited Groton in Oct., we met our son at the gate (there is a small parking lot outside the main gate) He got in the car and drove us on base (always have your i.d. ready!) We were able to have chow w/ him and the guys, walk around the NEX and had a nice tour of a sub - awesome! We are not allowed in their rooms. If you are on base he must be with you at all times. We stayed at the Navy Lodge about a mile and a half off of the base. We made reservations on the phone, they will ask for your sailors info. And as long as he is with you at check in to the lodge - you are good. The rooms were clean, place was quiet, they have a laundry room, rooms were a great price. Our son stayed with us at the Navey Lodge, it was a nice change for him to get our and about. It was WONDERFUL. I hope your trip is safe and wonderful. Keep us up to date!
Shirl - I pray your sailor gets his orginal orders too! Thanks for your information - any and all information is soo very helpful for ALL of us.
Annette - I pray your sailors A school is on schedule! All of our son's have waited so very long for A school!
Proudnavymom - wow, a wedding. This is all so exciting! To hear you "speak"about your son, your funny loving stories, respecting the wedding plans - you are going to be a WONDERFUL mom-in-law.
mrsb - big hugg! I forget what jobs and sons go with which NAVY MOM too!
All of you NAVY MOM'S are so patient! Momma's - ALL of our sons will soon be off to another part of their NAVY journey. May God guide them and protect them along with their beautiful loving families - ALWAYS! HOOYAH !!! Have a great week!
good morning ermklm!!! Yes, your Sailor will leave GL the saturday after PIR, either out of O'Hare or Midway. I think most of them go out of O'Hare. You will be able to spend some time with him at the airport before he leaves. My son got to the airport around 4 am-we didn't get there until 9! His plane left at 11am. When is your son's PIR? My son really likes Groton, I think mostly because he's on his own, well sort of! He only has one room mate and is in the boater barracks, which apparently is a little nicer than the regular barracks. :)

stylist613, I would pay to see either of my sons sew a button on!! They have watched me sew since they were little and have never picked up a needle!
ProudNavyMom, my son said he took the test already and your son will be joining him next week in ACU! :)

Thanks

Hello NAVY Momma's - wow, so much going on!
annmarie - Hooyah for soon to be A school completion!

Hello all! Can someone please advise me regarding A-School post PIR. Will our sailor be leaving GL on Saturday after PIR? Thank you!
Jan 28, 2014
mrsb
good morning ermklm!!! :)

Hey armynavymom! He will probably have some snow in Bangor too!! They do get snow in WA state, probably not as much as Groton!
