My son said thats where they had muster this morning and nothing was said. I ask him to pray for his brothers and to lift up those who seem to be struggling.
First and foremost, my condolences to this Sailor's family - I cannot imagine what they're going through.
Second and equally as important, I spoke with my son a few minutes ago - I understand they are under strict instructions not to speak about this incident. Unless your Sailor offers information, please don't inquire about it as I would hate to have someone get in trouble for violating what can be considered an OPSEC rule. I hope you understand.
My thoughts are with the family and friends of this Sailor, including his roommate(s) as I cannot imagine what they're going through.
We just spoke to our son-he didn't offer any info and we didn't ask. He couldn't even tell us what he's learning in school now. Just have to get used to it I guess. I'm just so sorry for the young man and his family. So many prayers are out there tonight.
Oh my Lord, have mercy. Our beautiful boys. Mercy. May he rest in peace and perpetual Light shine upon him. I will light my blue candle right now and pray for him and his family; and for all our boys in Groton and families. Oh I am so heartbroken.
I have not heard anything from my my Son either. I'm speechless. God bless them all
This is the worst thing I could ever imagine could ever happen to one of our sons or daughters. I have been crying since last night. God Bless all our children and loved ones and certainly this boys family. I pray for strength and determination to continue even when the feelings to quit are eminent. God bless our Sailors and all their Families. May this child rest in peace.
One of my son's buddies had a birthday almost 3 weeks ago so I sent him a belated birthday cookie, via Kristen, aka K's Homemade Sweets and Treats! She does such a nice job making smiles!!
Oh mrsb - you are so kind! I will remind our son if anyone out there could use a baked goodie! I have been thinking of sending another cookie or goodie our son's way - just to help with a smile during A school. He was soooo happy to receive the cookie for his birthday. The wind is pretty wild here, I can only imagine what it is like in your neighborhood! BIG HUGG!
Yes Fathomom, I've had just about enough of the wind!!! There is a hummingbird nest with two babies in it outside my kitchen window and I'm amazed that they are still there with this horrible wind. I worried about her all night, since I couldn't sleep because of the wind. That's one tough little mama bird, a lot like all of us I think!
Oh mrsb i LOVE IT!!! The boys look so happy!!!! That is one BIG cookie!!! HAHAHAHA Your are awesome!!! Great job Mama!!! ;)
Our boys seem to be VERY busy with A school and tests/exams so we need to hang in there. I sure need all of y'all's support because I miss all my texts from my Sailor Son ;/ but I trust in our Lord and know my Sailor is well.
yes mrsb, preparation for when they go on their fist underway, on. sniff sniff
Thanks Annette! You're the bomb! And Kristen too! :)
Yes ProudNavyMom, I don't hear from mine as often as I would like either. I know they are busy in school so I try not to bother him during the day. I know we are all so proud of our boys!!
Annette - Thanks for the website! I am ready to send something soon!
The very same here in our home - we will send our texts to our Sailor and he returns them when he has time. Our sons have busy and very long days. They are learning such vital information, such responsibility for their future jobs. I am very proud of our son's - may God guide ALL of them. ALL of you NAVY MOMMA'S too!! Again, I am so very thankful ALL of you are here. BIGG NAVY MOM hugg and a HOOYAH!
Wondering how many are in night school for A school? Class is 5-11 M-F. Apparently every new A school rotates day and evening. So evenings I know I won't hear from mine until after 11, or 8 my time.
Oklahomamomma you are so blessed to hear from your boy so often.
Annette, you too. I'm still trying to figure out if my son is on night or morning classes.
Hello Mom's my son's A school is night class and he actually is enjoying his schedule. I received a pic on my phone from my son yesterday of quite of few of the Sailor's at the park. You could see groups all over BBQing and enjoying some fairly decent weather I think it was in the upper 40's. Probably felt like summer to all of them :-) Nice to have some good news our boys certainly could use it.
Here's a great photo from one of the Navy news updates.
I am never going to make his flight arrangements again. His flight gets in at 10:53pm-the last train is 10:22pm no bus that late. Cab is $155 dollars-help!!!
tidefan - that is when he gets back to where? Providence?
maybe the Navy has a shuttle that can come out and pick him up? Gee - I wish you all the luck in the world or maybe you need to just win a lottery - Yuk! It may be that someone is out the $155. Spending stupid money is always how I learn - price of education????
Welcome jbug! We are a very friendly new family for you!! My son loves Groton, so much more freedom than boot, more phone calls, more skyping, wait, there was none of that at boot!!! You will like it here. :)
Hi jbug and welcome to our friendly group! There are some very experienced mom's who can help answer any questions you might have. You're going to enjoy the ability to stay in touch with your Sailor now that he's at his A-school :-)
Hello jbug - welcome to our Groton family. Hooyah and Congratulations on your Sailor graduating BOOT! Were you able to attend? Oh, we cried with pride....still do thinking about it. Our son loves Groton Sub-Base, and has ever since he set his tired BOOT-boots on it almost one year ago. The best part is the ability to stay in touch with him - love it! There will be yellow and blue cards to earn - your Sailor will be busy getting settled - no worries, text him and he will return your text when he has the time. We are here for you!
Hello jbug! Welcome! Congratulations on your new Sailor! HOOYAH!!!! You will love it here.
All the other Moms have covered what you need to know for now but please ask away! Any time you feel like having an ear, a Navy Mom Hug (NMH) just post something, we are all here for you. You do bring back some awesome memories of my Son graduation from Boot camp! Sniff sniff. Good happy memories. You must be so proud!!!
God bless you and yours always, and please thank your Son for his Service to our beautiful Country!!! Big NMH!!!
Hi jbug! My son has only been there since the end of Jan. He really seems to be doing good. He's made some great friends. He went to Boston this weekend, saw some cool sites, plus his great love, Fenway Park. First time for him there. Its awesome to be able to be in touch with your boy again after bootcamp. They are all amazing for what they are doing. I wish the best for your son. (And of course you too!!!)
Good Morning jbug! My son is in ET Nav and will graduate in May. Trying to plan my trip up to CT to see him one more time before they send him off somewhere else. He hit Groton at the coldest time of year but your son will love Spring and Summer. It is a beautiful place indeed! Please try to visit it at least once so you can see what these young guys and girls are up to and also visit the Nautilus Sub that is right there. It is quite an adventure and his future holds many more wondrous places that you can visit and be with him. Mine has worked so hard as they all will. Sometimes it gets very stressful. Ask us and we will try to answer your questions. Believe me when I say that we take this trip along with our young men and women. Mine might be going to Hawaii and that can't be all bad. I will get my Hula skirt ready. LOL Hope to speak with you more. Congrats! and welcome to the Navy family.
Welcome jbug! I hope your son enjoys Groton, and you enjoy the bonus of being in regular contact with him! I was born and raised in Groton, but have not lived there for all of my married life. I was lucky enough to be able to go twice last year! My son visited frequently as he was growing up, since I have family in the area. I can make suggestions depending on what your son likes to do in his free time. Those of us here who have been there can make recommendations for good restaurants, etc. And you can check out K's Homemade Sweets n Treats on facebook, she is 5 minutes from base, and makes amazing goodies which she can deliver on base since her hubby is USMC reservist. She will even make your sailor's favorite recipe to deliver! Welcome aboard!
Ladies......thank you so much for the warm welcome!!!! I can already feel the love. :-) Yes...it is so nice to be able to talk to and text my sailor now. He seems to be enjoying more free time now compared to boot camp. We are so proud of him and YES we attended the graduation ceremony and it was amazing. I've never seen anything like it. Just seeing his division march through those doors, it gives me chills just thinking about it. Thanks for the tip about K's Homemade Sweets n Treats too. Wow, there is so much information here. I'm sure I will have some questions for you soon. He did mention to us about the cards that he can earn. He loves the outdoors. We are from GA so he has never spent a lot of time in that part of the country but he has already said the views are pretty. I've never been to Connecticut so I will definitely be planning a trip before he leaves. Thanks again EVERYONE for the welcome.
Hello, we are going to visit our son in Groton this weekend. I was trying to find some good places to eat. Is Paul's Pasta Shop somewhere to try? Also my son and his buddy love good Mexican if anyone has any suggestions. We might head to Boston on Sat to see the USS Constitution. Are there any other things to see there or any food suggestions as we have never been to Boston. Thanks!
Hi Corfrank! Boston is a great place there is sooooo much! Quincy market, freedom trail aquarium, science museum, faunal hall, tour of Fenway park - just to name a few! We used to drive to foxborough then take the T in to boston - mass transit is great there. I would check on line for the current info - it's been about 20 years since I've done this.
Hi Moms!!! Got a five liner text from my boy!!! He is on day classes and really enjoying it. Fast paced but good non the less. I think they train them all to say the same thing, if you ask me! haha
He actually said he would have rather had the night classes but he was happy with the day class. I replied to him "The grass is always greener on the other side of the Ocean Sailor!" HAHAHA He texted back haha. So I'm really happy to have this chat after so many quiet days. :-)
Jbug, good to see you on here as well! I'm on sub moms too. Ask any questions or just share. We are all here for you and for our Boys!
Oh, I started watching Submarine: Hidden Hunter and within the first 10 min. it mentions our boys will earn the title Submariner after they earn their Dolphins, usually after their first underway. I know that is something they want but it means we won't hear from them for a long while :/
Hi Jbug! Yes it's on netflix! My husband and I watched the first two episodes but haven't got back to it yet. Will have to do that one of these days, or just start over!
Navymom2013' if your son is on a boomer he will go to GA for a three month class before he goes anywhere else. My son is ET Nav, only ET navs go to Ga for that class. My son was supposed to go to Washington, his orders changed and he stayed in Ga, he was mad at first but happy with it now.
Giselda that was fun to watch, I love that they're in Groton!
Perfect timing too I had just talked to my son and handed off the phone to his Dad and decided to check NFM's. It's so good to hear his voice and know he's doing well. I'm always careful not to be too gushy on the phone and scare him off..lol but when I'm finished talking all I can say is that's my little boy and am so very proud of him! And all our boys/men!
He said the class ahead of him received their orders. It sounds like my son is getting closer to receiving his. Probably in a month or so I'm guessing? Starting to get a little nervous and excited for him!
