mine is USS Texas - he said he only gets one week home - he's driving his car home and sending his TV to Pearl - I hear you about all those cold weather clothes but you never know! They may get to go somewhere cold yet. My son left all of his in his POD and had to buy more for Groton so he has double now. I already have his car sold, he took such good care of it.
The radio is worth more than the car though and my husband has the same car - he is swiping it. He says he is going to get a new bicycle when he gets there. I joined the Hawaii group - have you? I am reading all the back posts and it is really informative. I am so glad he is finally finished with school - I hope??
doubletrouble - you think Texas is far - I am in Florida - just as far and 6 1/2 hours they say to Pearl. I hate flying already. I will have to have a number of drinks just to get on the plane. LOL
k-love, I use USPS for all my shipping. I send goodies, sent his PS3 and games, and all sorts of things. I use the flat rate boxes, and they get there within 2-3 days. Guaranteed in 2, but it gets to Groton in 2 days, sometimes another day before the base picks it up, sometimes not. The price is very reasonable.
I'm so happy reading all the good news about first choice orders and graduations and just about everything. Welcome to the group all the new sub moms! I just wanted to share my experience of a lifetime. My boy just got back from his first deployment, actually half deployment, he met his boat half way. We flew to WA for the Homecoming and we waited for him at the airport in Seattle since we couldn't get on base without Military ID and it was amazing, a moment I will cherish forever. I had a chance to meet his Superiors and shipmates and I can rest assured knowing my son is in good hands. He got to see beautiful places in a very short time during port calls. I'm a very proud momma!
Our Sailors are always in my thoughts and prayers!
OklahomaMama, that was funny!!! I'm going to print that, scan it and send it all over the place!! Thanks for making me laugh so early in the morning!!! ;)
Hi, funny my son is going to Hawaii too!! He got his first choice for boat and location also. I'm happy, I've never been to Hawaii and my husband and I have been wanting to go, so now we have an even better reason to go. That's great that everyone seems to be getting their first choices.

Doubletrouble - Yes, you are fortunate to have your son's so close to eachother. Congrats to both your boys......and you and dad!
Hello mrsb - BIG HUGG!!! I look forward to seeing you soon!
Good morning FATHOMOM - I, unfortunately am not in the financial position to go for the third time, for my son's graduation. I spend $1000 every time He is packing immediately after his graduation and driving home to Florida - stopping at his old stomping grounds in GA. I will be waiting with lots of hugs when he gets home.
I sent him a solid chocolate Easter bunny and he called me at 6 am this morning to say he ate the ears off and it was really good. He's so cute!!!
His roommate left already for Hawaii so he has a friend there
when he gets there. He is so upbeat and I am really happy he joined the NAVY. I see such a difference in him - he is unbelievably a different person than he was before.
Prayers go out to all you MOMS and DADS - I know we are on a bumpy ride - biggest part is them being out of our sight and unable to speak to them when we want, but it's all good !
Congratulations to all who are graduating and embarking on a new chapter. I enjoy reading your posts - a bit jealous of those going to Hawaii!
My son still has techno and A school to go. He decided last week to marry a girl he met online a few months ago - ugh! She did fly out to Groton in February, so they knew each other for 5 weeks - why have a long engagement! Oh well, at least he let us know and didn't get married in secret.
Well Cath Bubblehead - sometimes you know them your entire life and the marriage still does not work out. I guess it's as good as it gets when you are in love. As long as they know that they are really going to have to work on it from a distance.
Thank you for your great shipping advise. Congrats to all moms and sons heading to their next adventure... These are rewards that make SubSchool worth all the effort:) now good luck to a new beginning, to the new challenges ahead- a Happy Easter indeed!

SoProud your post made me teary eyed reading it (happens a lot on here reading posts) I am so happy for you. God bless your son and so thankful he had safe travels.
marlene and Mattsmom-Congratulations to your sons! Wherever they go whether it's first choice or not our boys will certainly have an adventure ahead of them!
FATHOMOM- As always thank you for your guidance, wisdom and kind words!!
Cath Bubblehead-Wow, I am inspired by your ability to handle your son's sudden decision to marry. You're obviously going to be a very gracious MIL. And why not see the positive side that is the high road for you to take. May God bless them both with faith and love to keep their marriage strong.
Tysmom- Thanks for the invite I need to check out that NFM's Hawaii group! k-love- You are welcome happy shipping!
Britbrat2323- Our son put his dream sheet in during the latter part of A-school in late March. He found out a week later where he was going. His graduation date is May 8th. He did say that the turn-a-around on their dream sheets went particularly quick usually takes longer. But as usual things are always based on the needs of the Navy and I would imagine not all situations are going to be the same. That was our son's experience maybe someone else can chime in and kind of give an average. Hope that helps:-)
Cath Bubblehead - I too am moved and inspired how you are dealing with your son's marriage decision. You are so right in doing so - we do our best to welcome with love. That is just about all we CAN do! May God guide them in all they do with love, health and happiness too.
Fair Weather and Following Sea's to ALL who are heading out to the fleet!
My son just graduated from GL today and will be off to Groton tomorrow!!!
What an emotional and beautiful day!
I have a question for all you wonderful ladies.
What do they do about housing after Subschool? Are they able to stay on base for A school or do they need to find housing off base?
Giselda - Welcome, Congratulations and Hooyah! You have a Sailor! On to the next step of his NAVY journey! I wish him well in all he does! YOU too! Our son has been at Groton for just about one year - loves it there. They are a strict base and hold our young men accountable. It is quite different than BOOT - he will enjoy it. Yes, they are able to stay on base for A school. It will be a while before he starts A school. During the next few weeks there will be qual's to meet, lots and lots of cleaning, watch. The courses before A school are BESS (basic enlisted sub school), Techno and ATT (advanced technical training....i think). Hopefully he does not have to wait too long before he "classes up" (starts class). We are here for you. BIG NAVY MOM HUGG!
Welcome Giselda and Congratulations to you and your new Sailor! Such an exciting day we all know you've had :-D Are you meeting him at the airport? Does he fly out tonight? That's what our son did last year on June 8th right after graduation on June 7th. Such wonderful memories. We were there to watch him arrive at O'hare and exit the bus with all of the other young Sailors that night, what a sight! ALL so handsome and ready for their journeys. Stayed with him until their flight departed at 10:40 am for New London. Now here we are just a few weeks away from him graduating A school and coming home for leave! Can hardly believe all that time has passed. Your son will enjoy himself in Groton. So many adventures await him. FATHOMOM is right strict base and all the better for it! Follow the rules to a T and he will do great! Lots to stay focused on and keep him busy. You will enjoy this forum so many wise and helpful ladies to get you through this journey!
Hi everyone, Giselda my son just arrived too. He is so excited, He said it is beautiful there and has already sent pictures from the plane! He said he got really lucky and will start Monday. What is the Facebook page ya'll are all on. I found families of Groton I think..
Thank you FATHOMOM and Kevsmom for the information. I am truly thankful that Bootcamp is over lol!
We did go to the airport to see all the sailors off and we had a ball with all of them. Made sure we told them that our house is always opened to all of them if they wanted to come down with our son. I can't begin to explain to others the pride that i have for all of our sailors, and to you all, I don't need to because you know exactly what I mean.
NavyMomCindy,my son said the same thing! I am so happy he is there with the group of sailors he traveled with. My heart is bursting with NAVY PRIDE!!!
Giselda I think I may have met you at PIR, not sure I met so many. Are you from CT? We went to the airport and gave our son his thing and stayed but then we had to go back to the hotel. I think they have a great group and are all good friends. Were ya'll Div 155? Let me know if you have a facebook
Hi Everyone....my son graduated from Great Lakes Friday. Up until the week before graduation, we thought he was going to Pensacola. Surprised when we found out he was going to Groton, CT. According to my son, he'll be there at least a year. Looking forward in sharing this time with you.
Welcome Pammy and Spunky!! My son loves it in Groton-has been there since June 8th of last year and is in the final part of A school. Groton is a very nice little town and I'm sure your boys will love it there too. It's especially nice when others from their PIR group go there too. Enjoy!!
my Son is now in Groton, CT. He arrived on Sat, after his PIR on 4/25 ~ looking forward to meeting new Navy Families that will give me some answers and support as I head into this new journey with my Sailor ~ not sure what to expect or how this all goes...wishing all the new Sailors arriving in CT the Best of luck!!
Welcome new NAVY Mom's of Groton - Congratulations on PIR. Wasn't PIR the most awesome, emotional and proud experience? On to the next step of your son's NAVY journey ! At Groton there are new terms, rules and qualifications to learn about - we are here for you! Our son loved Groton the first day he set foot on the base - I hope the same for all of your son's.
FATHOMOM, good morning!!! I wish you were able to come to VG on the 10th but I know you have other plans. Silvia will be there to meet some of us crazy ladies!!! Hi Silvia!!
Welcome Giselda! Yes, we love them all and feel like they are our own kids! HAHAHA They are all so beautiful and courageous. God bless them! You brought good memories to mind, PIR, the airport, and feeling love for them, for each one from then on. Big NMH!!!!
Kevsmom93 you are just a few days away from seeing your Sailor before going on his new assignment!!! How blessed you are!!! Mrsb and I will be following you to "Sub Moms" soon!!! HAHAHA Our boys will be graduating in a couple of months!!! I know you are so proud of yours! He did excellent work at A School. Please give him a hug from me and thank him for his Service!!! God bless him and all our boys!!! HOOYAH!!!!
NavyMomCindy Welcome and congratulations to you and Giselda and all the new moms!!! You will love this group of ladies that help us navigate through all these new experiences. God bless you and your Sailors! HOOYAH!!!!
Hello everyone. My SR has PIR 06/06. He's MMS. Prior to leaving for RTC he was told he'd be attending A School in about three different places, and then right before he left he was told Groton, Connecticut. He told me his schooling week be 30wks. Does that include BASS? And why is his schooling so much longer than others going for 6wks??
Hi Ashley and welcome! Those going to Groton are training to be submariners. The submarine crew is a specialized group - every member has to know every job. There is 6 weeks of BESS - basic enlisted submarine school, then ATT, TCNO, and A school. Some do not ATT. Hope that helps.
My son was also told that he'd be going to Groton for training but he told me it would be for a total of 58 weeks. Not sure how true that is and I am sure his recruiter told him that since he was told that before he left for BC.
Hi Ladyrocker, Depending on your son's rate it could be true. Mine is SECF sonar and will do all of his training in Groton. He has finished BESS (submarine school) ATT advanced technical training. He has been waiting to class up for Techno, and last will be A school. He arrived in groton Dec 8, and expects by about December to actually get a boat!
Welcome new moms! Congratulations to you and your new Sailors! My son has really enjoyed his stay in Groton.
Thank you ProudNavyMom#1 yep we're almost there! He arrives home on Friday but we still don't know which airport or a time. Hoping he gets his flight info. soon :-) Okay I just need to brag on my son Kevin's behalf...he graduated second in his class! He is an honor graduate along with two others (I think I got that right). So proud of him. He told me he was fourth just two weeks ago and worked his A## off to move up to second! This whole experience has been such a confidence builder for him. He always tell us how much he's loving his job :-)
Can I have just a tiny bit more brag time....our youngest son Ryan(our Marine) has graduated his first stage of training at Corry Station, Pensacola on Thursday. He graduated as Honor Man top of his class! So proud of him and all his hard work. He just arrived last night in San Angelo, Texas at Good Fellow AFB for his next stage of training.
I wish all of your son's much success in their journey!
Kevsmom93 - YES, you CAN!! That is wonderful, exciting and very proud news - I am glad you shared with all of us. Be proud of yourself too! Your sons have made important decisions and choices to stay focused on their studies and future jobs. HOOYAH! Now, hugg that boy/man/Sailor and totally enjoy your time with him. Continued prayers for both of your sons continued training!!
Once out of BOOT , our NAVY children must continue to stay on task for their imperative jobs and futures to come. Our son admitted it was a very easy for him to neglect study time and head out to exciting adventures with his fellow Groton NAVY brothers. There are so many cool things to do and places to visit. This choice of his has made his classes tougher for him, since then he is much more diligent. We are thankful he was able to see the direction he was headed. We are also thankful for the instructors that often are models for our son's - our son has been fortunate in this. All of our son's are young adults, on their own in an entirely different environment than our homes. The decision must be their own. This letting-go stuff has been quite a learning experience for us! I do my best not to nag our son tooooo much- they must live and learn. And I have many, many prayers for that Holy Spirit to MOVE them in the direction best for them !!! ha ha ha!! Oy! sorry, I digress.
Cath Bubblehead -yes , the training our son's do at Groton can easily take up to at least one year to complete. I agree, the rate may make a difference. Our son is ETNAV and has done all of his training at Groton. When he arrived at Groton there was plenty of "hurry up and wait". They meet their quals as soon as possible and continue cleaning.....and more cleaning.....and ACU (await to class up). Our son has shared with us that he too has had an overall positive, learning, growing experience while at Groton. Our son is thankful, so are we. Thank God.
Fair Weather and Following Seas to all of our son's.God speed!
KevsMom, that's so awesome about both of your boys!! Hooyah and Hoorah to them both!!
My son and ProudNavyMom's and KevsMom all arrived in Groton the same day; June 8th of last year. My son and ProudNavyMom's son are in a different class, radio, that takes a little longer than Kevsmoms son. They all had to wait to class up and clean a lot, like ProudNavyMom said. ACU also means "always cleaning up"!!! They have completed BESS, ATT and TCNO and are now in the final part of A school, so yes, it can take over a year to get through sub school. He is really enjoying Groton and all his new, and old friends. They are a very tight group, which is a wonderful thing. It will all be worth it in the end!!
Thanks ladies, it's a big accomplishment that all our young men complete there at New London. I'm so very proud of all of them.
FATHOMOM- you're absolutely right there are all sorts of distractions some good some not so good in Groton, just like everywhere. I think growing up under the microscope of the Navy can be pretty tough for our young men. They have so much to learn and figure out as soon as they arrive. I also agree instructor's are the unsung heroes and do not get the credit they deserve. They give so much of the their time and energy.
To the new mom's as FATHOMOM said learning to let go... well that never really happens it kind of evolves into adjusting to a new lifestyle for us. I mean how do you really "let go" of your kids. I don't think that's possible!
mrsb- Do you think he will put some of that cleaning experience to use when he gets home???......LOL
Kevsmom!!! I'm so happy for you and your family!!!!
Kevin-HOOYAH!
Ryan-HOORAH!
Bravo Zulu!!!!!!!
I can just see your smile from ear to ear!!! Hahaha god bless them and yours!!!
You go ahead and brag all you want!!! Your Sons earned these honors!!!! And the Navy just doesn't hand these out!!! ;) BIG NMH!!! <3
Went to see our son today in Groton:) I know he's only been there a week but just wanted to see him!
Took him and 2 other sailors to lunch on base and they are doing great! They looked so handsome in their uniforms(black pants and khaki shirt) and we were just beaming with pride for all of them!
Way to go Giselda!!! HOOYAH!!! I know how excited you must be! I was there last week. I hadn't seen my sailor since Christmas!!! And I just wanted to see him! (Shrug)Hahaha aren't they all beautiful? And we are so proud and feel like they are all our Sons :D God bless you and yours!!! Big NMH
I have a couple more questions, please. My SR is my husband. We're expecting our first child in August. As MMS, do you think he had a good possibility of being granted paternity leave when she is born? Also, 4th of July weekend they are vacated liberty, correct? Are you allowed to fly home and see your wife during those four days? Lastly, how long do wives have to wait to move with their husbands? His training is over 20wks, so technically I am allowed. Please help. I'm so lost.
Oh Ashley. I just read your post but don't have the answers. You may have some replies by tomorrow. Or later from our sisters on West Coast. Just hang in there. There are awesome ladies on here with all the answers. Just didn't want you to feel alone here so I replied. If only to say hi and a little encouragement. Hang in there sweetie. Have you also signed up on here for SUB MOMs? William in Nashua has lots of answers too. Just a thought. God bless your Sailor and you my dear and your baby in the womb :D BIG NMH!!!
Hello Ashley and welcome! Like ProudNavyMom said, some of us don't have the answers but don't want to leave you hanging. I would do as she suggests and ask on the sub moms group; they have been in longer and would probably know the answers to your questions. Congrats on the baby girl too!!
Hello Ashley - Welcome and congratulations on your blessing on the way! And PIR in June! I don't have any answers either - I want to offer encouragment too. Thank you Seahorse for your info.! It may be a little overwhelming, we are here for you and yours. Keep asking questions from these awesome women and become informed, it will help you prepare for your NAVY journey. Please continue to stay here with us, however check out a Wife sub group as well - they have been there done that. Once at Groton, your SAILOR will be able to get more exact information for your lil family.BIG NAVY MOM HUGG - I keep you and yours in prayer!
Woohoo! I just got a text from my son, and I don't get too many of those! He said he passed the hardest part of his A school so it's all easy from here on out! I only wish they would tell them when graduation is so we can start planning!! So proud of my boy!!
Our son graduated A school today! He's flies home tomorrow for his two week leave. We are so excited! He said sadly no pics of him, no one there to take any I guess, kinda bummed about that. But it is, what it is. I still get to see my son tomorrow!
mrsb- Congratulations to your son! That is a huge accomplishment for him. Are you planning on going back for the graduation? Kevin told us not to because he would be so busy that week and then flying out the next day after graduation. But that's entirely up to you just letting you know how it was for our son.
Ashley best of luck to you with everything. Just as a side note our son did get a very short leave while waiting to class up for TCNO. He was granted leave to attend his brother's graduation from the Marine Corp. He had to have a perfect and I mean perfect record to have his leave approved. They also didn't approve it until the last minute making him sweat the entire ordeal.
I got my hotel booked for my son's graduation in June. I'm so excited! He's 3rd in his class. Can't wait for him to get his orders. Should be next week. :)

Hi - Not everyone is getting their first choice - sorry to say!
This happens sometimes and also - be careful what you wish for - as the old saying goes. What's bad can be good and what seems good can also not be.
My sailor son says "sometimes life gives you what you need, not necessarily what you want." Good Luck to all the sailors and their families!
Have a Happy Good Friday and Easter. May the bunny hide many eggs that you will find a month later in the lawn, with the lawnmower. LOL
Oh Marlene - Yahoo! Same boat. We have to stay in close touch. I would like to friend you or you can friend me!!! Lot's are going to Hawaii!!!

Hello Ashley and welcome! Like ProudNavyMom said, some of us don't have the answers but don't want to leave you hanging. I would do as she suggests and ask on the sub moms group; they have been in longer and would probably know the answers to your questions. Congrats on the baby girl too!!
