We try to send a large flat rate box full of Kool aid drinks every month. We open boxes and only send the tubes. Luckily I have an entire VFW Post that helps me. Then my son just shares. Beef Jetky is great too!

Hello all.  Just wanted to let you know my son received the care package I sent this past Wed, Feb. 22 and I mailed it from Indiana on Feb 6.  I was pretty amazed he received it that fast and I was super excited (and so was he) that he got it.  I got the large priority rate shipping box from the post office and stuffed it full.  He likes a lot of protein, so I sent 2 jars of peanut butter, alot of protein bars and trail mix, etc.

Does anyone know anything about a 9 digit zip code for mailing to the ship ????

  • Dad of Sailor

This is directly from the ships official webpage...

    Mailing Address:
    (Rate or Rank/Name)
USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77)
    UNIT 100331 BOX #
(Box number is specific to each Sailor on board)
    FPO, AE 09513

    FPO, AE 09513

Thanks Dad of a Sailor. My son said he was going to order something in Greece and have it sent to the ship but they needed the four extra numbers in the zip code .

  • SailorMom94

FYI, make sure your Sailor's keep all tracking records from stores or ship when send packages. Mine sent me a package from the ship last deployment and I never received it, it was a very expensive rug from Turkey.
  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

In 2013 when the USPS consolidated their military mail operations from the 2 coasts to one central facility in Chicago, they mandated that 9 digit zip codes be used. In 2014, this was amended to use a standardized addressing system and 5 digit zip codes. As far as I know this is still the standard today.

The address I have is very different but my son has received both packages I have sent him so far??
  • mommaross CVN77

My son just informed me he is re-enlisting. He already has already been assigned his next duty station after deployment.  He will be in the same state as me, just a short 8 hour drive away :).  Very happy momma

I am so excited that I finally got to hear from my son tonight! He enjoyed his time in Greece and is doing well on his first cruise. He hasn't received the letter I wrote to him that was sent on February 6th. Does it take almost a month for mail to reach them?
  • SailorMom94

DrKacy2b, have you emailed your Sailor? Each sailor has a email address that is given to them from the Navy, It is very easy and a fast way to keep up with them.
  • DrKacy2b

No, I haven't gotten his email address. I will see if I can though.
  • VICTOR'SMOM

Hello moms and dads how are you today God bless all of our sailors and all human been. Bendiciones hermanas
  • navytxmom

I have had really good luck with messaging on Facebook. Even if they don't have their own laptops, (which, I don't believe they are allowed to use their own to communicate any way. Maybe someone else can clarify that.) they are allowed to use ship computers. My son tries to get on the same time, relatively, every day. That way it's almost like talking on the phone. While in port, they can call, though I think they have to buy phone cards, unless of course they carry an overseas plan. We checked into that and it was going to double our phone bill, so we went with phone cards. He buys them on the boat, but would be a good thing to add to their care packages. Just make sure they are international cards. I don't know how any of you are doing. I pray for not only our Sailors, but all of you too. This is almost as difficult as boot camp. In fact, I worry more. It's just nice that I get to communicate with him. Even though it's so hard not to ask questions you know you can't. If anyone is having a hard time sending a care package, please let me know. I know we ALL would be more than willing to help. I am so proud of the whole ship - working together to complete an important operation. God Bless them all & keep them safe!
  • Dad of Sailor

Last deployment the CO blocked facebook to keep the network from overloaded (not enough bandwidth). My son is no longer on the Bush so I don't know what they are doing on this deployment. If they have not blocked facebook, Facebook messenger works great for those with access to a computer.

  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

While they are underway we just communicate via his ship's email. A couple times we hit it when he was online, so we were able to email back & forth.

For communications in port, our son wanted a new phone anyway, so before deployment he shopped around with that in mind. He signed up with Google's Project Fi. The base rate is $20/mo for the first line ($15 each additional) for unlimited talk and text, plus $10/GB for LTE data (they only charge you for the exact data you actually use) The system automatically routes calls between Cellular, LTE data or wifi depending on the best quality/price. The plan is good in 135 countries, so he doesn't have to worry about calling cards or buying a SIM card or burner phone in each port.

Internationally, if the call gets routed through wifi, there is no charge, for hi speed LTE data it is the same $10/GB, and if it's routed through a cellular carrier it is $.20/minute. Data is always the same price worldwide, so skype, facebook, etc. is no big deal.

Project Fi currently only works with Google Pixel and Nexus phones. Just wanted to throw out another option in case you or your sailor is interested. Our son has been very happy with the service.

Anyone hear from their sailor recently? Been quiet on this site.
  • Marianne

I haven't heard from my sailor since they left Greece :(
  • KathyWQ

I just got an email from mine. Said it's getting super hot where they are but that everything is going good.
  • Island Girl

Yes same here, heard (thru email) from my son, it's hot!
  • MeLinda

Got a phone call last Sunday.

  • MeLinda

Does the Ombudsman send out emails during deployment. I sent an email to the Ombudsman while my son was home prior to deployment. I have not heard anything back that they received the email. All the deployments my son has been on prior to joining this ship i have gotten emails periodically with updates.

  • carolb

When I emailed the ombudsman regarding the death in our family, I heard back within a day.
  • Dad of Sailor

    Want to hear something funny...

My son was in the Navy for four years and stationed on the Bush for three of those years. He was on the previous 2014 deployment with many of your Sailors. He got out of the Navy last year and started his life as a civilian.

Last night his employer informed him that he was flying to meet the USS George  H.W. Bush on deployment and would be working underway with them.

So, he thought his sea time was done when he got out of the Navy but he's headed back out to the Bush and will be underway again. He gets to see all his buddies again that he left last year.

  • KWats Momma

What a wonderful story dad of sailor. I'm very courious what type of work your son does now???
  • lbimom

Knew there was a reason you were staying with this group, Dad of Sailor!

  • Dad of Sailor

Yes, there was a reason I just didn't know what it was. :)

KWats...I will be happy to say what he does once he is done. Posting it now could give information to our enemies. I don't want to risk giving out any information that could put your Sailors at risk.

  • SailorMom94

Dad of Sailor that's great, I just drove from Florida back to California with my Sailor as he is now starting his civilian life.

  • Mary

  • MaryNavywife/mom

I got an email earlier today
  • Mary

Received my Red Fri shirt--thank you Love it!!

  • Marianne

I haven't heard from my son too at all since their last stop. Hoping they pull into port sometime soon!! I know last week he said they have been really busy. Just miss him :(
  • Mother of 4

Our son has been communicating through emails.

  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

I know our son said no news is good news but I was just wondering if anyone has heard from they're sailors? It's been 2 1/2 weeks, I've seen posts from the ship but just thought I'd check. Once a mom always a mom.
  • MichaelsMom

My daughter in law has received 2 short emails this week. Son says they are very busy but all is good :)

  • navytxmom

I hear from my AD3 almost every day via Facebook messenger. Great tool for keeping in touch. Still have to observe OPSEC rules. No one wants to put our sons & daughters in any more stressful situations than they already are. But I keep him updated on things at home. What I'm up to, if he got my packages, how he is holding up under the bizarre pressure. He states the jets are flying & as an aviation mechanic this keeps him busy. Haven't heard from him in over 24 hours, so I know they are busy. His mood is good and when asked how he was holding up, he answered "great mom, I do my best work under pressure. They are supposed to get mail today.
  • Dad of Sailor

  • Mary

My prayers go out to keep them safe
  • NavyMomDPL

Thanks for sharing the link with us Dad, was concerning to read but this is what our sailors signed up for. Prayer for them all. I heard from my son and as the others have said just non stop busy but he is good

  • navytxmom

Thanks Dad, for the link. I too am disturbed by the news but have complete confidence in our Navy. You keeping us informed is the most awesome experience. Thank you for your commitment to our men & women in this ship. You are a top notch administrator for our group & we are lucky to have your commitment, knowledge, & experience guiding us. Thanks from one scared to death mom!
  • navytxmom

This link did let me know why I haven't heard from him since Monday.
  • Dad of Sailor

Your Sailors are well trained and prepared as this is what they do every day. They have the best equipment and training in the world and are out there working as a team. They are doing important work and you each should be very proud of what they are doing. I know I am.

Thanks to each of you for raising young men and women that are willing to do the hard things this country needs to remain free.

  • Marianne

Heard from my son today, he emailed to say how busy they have been. Just wondering does anyone know what month they are expected back. I guess I was planning September or October timeframe but my son was hinting it may be sooner??
  • MaryNavywife/mom

Due to OPSEC the date or possible date of homecoming can never be discussed on social media at all but especially in a forum like this that is open to the world. You don't have to be a member to read what is posted here so it's even more important not to give out information. OPSEC is about pieces of s puzzle and we can't give out even the smallest piece of info.
  • Marianne

Thanks, I know, just anxious to see him
  • TLC72

I haven't heard anything from my son in a week or so, but I know they are busy. He emails our daughter in law almost daily, and she keeps us in the loop. On a different note, I would love to see pictures of people wearing the RED Friday shirts that were ordered from me. I would like to put together a picture collage. I did have a few people tell me that if the shirts weren't specifically for this deployment, they would love to order. So, I will be doing another order of shirts with the front design only. If anyone is interested, or know someone who is, just get in touch with me.

This is a very basic question so don't laugh! Can the sailors send snail mail from the ship? If I send addressed, stamped envelopes with note cards, can he send notes to our older relatives without internet? If so, is one normal, forever stamp sufficient?
    Thanks!
