Yes, they can send snail mail from the ship.
  • Dad of Sailor

Yes, they can receive and send regular mail. Normal forever stamps work perfectly.

  • KWats Momma

Anyone know how to find you email address for frg specific to a squadron?
  • mommaross CVN77

My son received his package today.  I put in the requested peanut butter but as I try to eat organic I put in organic peanut butter!  Not good.  He informs me peanut butter has to have oils in the ingredients or by the time they receive it, it has solidified and cannot be broken down again.  Anyone suggest a good brand to send - I don't like peanut butter so I wouldn't know what's good or not :) Thanks.  Hoping to send another box today filled to the brim with peanut butter :)

    My son likes Jiff Brand.

Has anyone heard from their loved ones via email since Tuesday ?
    I'm a worrier lol.
  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Just a question, my son called today but when the call comes through it says it's from Georgia. When I checked the number it says it's a scam caller. I didn't answer but then his girlfriend sent me a text and told me it was him. Has anyone else gotten a call like this?
  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

I exchanged email with my son this morning. They had an onboard concert and some fun activities this week.
  • krissyxd

@mommamac I've gotten a few calls from GA that were unusual. What was the area code ?
And awe that's good. Glad to hear they are getting to loosen up a bit.
  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Krissyxd, the area code was 404. He said he didn't know why that was showing up on the phone either. As for the onboard concert our son didn't get to attend that do to his work schedule. I guess the nukes do have as much free time as others on the ship.
  • MeLinda

Every time my son has called it shows to be a Virginia number. It has to due with the satellite locations and where they are at.

  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

Both times our son called from the ship, the caller ID simply said "unavailable."

Mommamac, my son is a nuke (ETN2.) He's been working crazy hours, but he must of had that day off. He saw the concert, got to play with EOD robots, and topped the night off by going out onto the fantail where he took some photos of the propellers churning up bio-luminescent plankton into a cool light show. He was excited to be assigned to a new watch crew, which he said would mean more hours, but he said also recognizes his hard work. All-in-all he said it was probably his best day so far of the deployment.

  • MaryNavywife/mom

It shows up a 757 number of they use a POTS line aka a "business" phone but "unknown" is when they call using a calling card.
  • Marianne

Help- not sure best way to handle this. My son emailed today, his 3 month old phone is not working. He has tried everything but it won't turn on. Should I wait until he gets somewhere to see if he can get it fixed, send him a new one, have home send me that one? Feel so bad for him
  • krissyxd

Marianne this happened to me when I went a while without using my phone. It could be his battery so A new one should turned it on. Have him try getting the battery replaced first (cheaper) then if that doesn't work the other alternatives.
  • TLC72

its not just Nuke's that don't have much free time. They are ALL working very hard and crazy hours. My son didn't get to see the concert either, but I'm glad for the ones that did.
  • Marianne

Saw on the Facebook page people are getting calls from their sailors! I hope to hear from mine too, of course his phone needed to break now!!!
  • MaryNavywife/mom

They can't use their personal phones to call while at sea. Their phones have to be on airplane mode unless they are in port. Any calls coming in when the ship isn't in port come from a ship to shore line or a POTS line.
  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Our son has asked for calling cards. He said to get the AT&T ones. I found the worldwide calling cards but when I called them to make sure they were the correct ones she said that he can use them off the ship but not on the phones on the ship. Does anyone know where I can get a calling card that can be used on the ship? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Dad of Sailor

    Mommamac,

You need AT&T Ship to Shore cards. They used to sell them online but quit several years ago. The NEX or on the Ship is the only place my son could find them.

  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Dad of Sailor, thank you for the info. I'll send him the ones I got and hope he can get some on the ship. We live close to a NEX but won't be able to get on base.
  • Dad of Sailor

    Mommamac,

One thing to remember, once he has ONE AT&T Ship to Shore card he doesn't have to keep buying them. You can refill the minutes online with a credit card.

Haven't heard from my Sailor since Saturday. Praying they are well. I got my RED shirt & love it! Anyone get emails recently??
  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Navytxmom- we received a quick call on Sat. but as for emails it's been awhile. Praying they are ok and hope to hear from him soon.
  • Mary

    I had email Sat.

  • JayDee659

I'm sure this is a silly question but what do they use to email? Their own phones or ships computer? My daughter is getting ready for her first deployment and there are so many unknowns!
  • MaryNavywife/mom

JayDee659. They use Navy computers to email. They can often use Facebook messenger as well. My husband emails me and it comes through as a text message. I heard from him today.
  • Dad of Sailor

They can't use their cell phone or own computer to connect to the internet while on the ship. They have to use one of the ships computers. There is no cell signal underway so cell phones are useless except for taking pictures and listening to music.

  • JayDee659

Mary Navy wife/mom and Dad of Sailor, thank you for the information!  Lots to learn and I appreciate your support.

  • KWats Momma

Anyone hear from their sailor that they received mail recently???
  • MaryNavywife/mom

My husband got 3 packages this past week.
  • Mary

Yes my sailor got his package a few days ago
  • KWats Momma

Thank you. This gives me a good idea on shipping time line as I'm trying out Walmart as they offer free shipping.
  • MaryNavywife/mom

Generally speaking it's 2-6 weeks but Its been averaging 3 weeks for us
  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

KWat's, I have only had one experience with Walmart's free shipping. I ordered something in December and it took 12 days to get it, whereas I could have had it shipped to my nearest store and picked it up in 2 days.   -Just my experience, YMMV.

Our packages have been averaging a little under 4 weeks.

  • Cathy Jo

Hi, so are you ordering from Walmart online and then having it shipped directly to your sailor?  I haven't tried that yet but I'm wondering if that's worth a try versus going to walmart, packing the box and sending it through the USPO... ?

  • KWats Momma

Yes Cathy jo, I have ordered directly from Walmart online and have the order shipped directly to my sailor on the ship. Saves me all the going, packing, and shipping. BUT he has not received the packages yet. Hence why I was wondering when the ship got mail last. So his should be in next mail call. If so I'd say it's a great service. I have done this with Amazon as well and it worked excellent.
  • KWats Momma

Even better!!!!.......And no filling out customes forms!
  • KWats Momma

Just wanna say as a long time member of this group, how valuable you are to me. I think back to my sons first deployment with the bush, just days after a school, I was a mess!! Here I found comfort, and support! I'm thankful for each one of you!
  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

Regarding shipping time: my son called yesterday from the ship and this topic came up. He said he "heard" that an admiral was frustrated at how long it was taking to get his packages so he "made some phone calls" and they should be getting their mail quicker. I don't know if any of that is true, but my son did say that he recently ordered something on Amazon and got it 9 days after it had shipped.

  • Mary

Heard from my sailor today. Made my whole week to hear his voice I miss him so much.
  • DrKacy2b

That's amazing! I haven't heard from mine in a while. I hope he's doing well. I am seeing all of this stuff about military action on the news, which worries me.

  • NavyMomDPL

Heard from mine today, he is doing well. I know the frustration of not hearing from our sailors for a time. Just trust no news is good news. They are kept busy that is for sure. The news is worrisome , I am right there with you.

  • DrKacy2b

Just sent a care package to my sailor via Amazon today, and also sending a snail-mail letter, as I haven't gotten an email address for him yet. He cancelled his Facebook account (not that he can use it at sea), so I only have the old fashioned mail to communicate with him until he gets to port again.

  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

DrKacy, they've been in port for a couple days now.

  • DrKacy2b

I heard from my kid today! So glad he's doing well. Missed being home in the US.
  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

We have gotten to talk to our son twice in 2 days. It was so great hearing from him. With all the stuff we are hearing in the news it makes a momma feel better just talking to him. He said he can't wait to get back to the states. Said he wants to celebrate all the holidays he's missed since they left. Should be a fun week.
  • lbimom

Dad of sailor-- I was wondering the same thing--

Anyway, Happy Easter to all of you celebrating and missing your sailors on this holiday! I haven't heard from mine in a while, so it very comforting to hear that all is ok with them.

  • Mary

So happy to hear from son for an extended period of time than just a few minutes.. so happy!!  want him home..He's always so surprised how worried I am--must be a mommy thing...

  • Mary

anyone hear from their sailor lately?
