Debbie: I echo what Gen said here. In fact, in DEP group, my son said that one of the recruiters told the group that when everyone went off to drink, etc., he would go workout to stay out of trouble. I'm sure that he would meet some other guys in there who would appreciate the company. Maybe they could all go get a bite to eat after working out? Remember...it just takes him meeting one "friend" who feels as he does...that will lead to others. Tell him to hang in there!
Kelly: No orders of any sort yet. He did choose a while back, but pcked FL bases and was told that they don't normally put them in their home states. So just don't know. He graduated today in his dress whites, he said, and is in the temporary hold unit until orders come in. They have been slow going on orders down there for yeomen, it seems.
I haven't been on here in quite some time, so I just want to make a short comment here by way of introduction. I'm a retired Navy chaplain. Yvonne and I have a "home away from home" for servicemen and women in our home on weekends. On Saturdays we get together for food fun and games. On Sundays we have a big home cooked meal after church and then we relax, watch Christian videos, have Bible studies where the guys and girls can ask questions and hopefully get some answers.
If your sons or daughters get orders to the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area and you think they might be interested in getting away from the base for a few hours, into a "real" home, with a real family, let them know about us. We'd love to invite them over. Send us a private message on here and we'll give you our contact information. We've had several Navyformoms' sailors to the house. Some Navyformoms have even visited!
Ok, I have been corrected. It is the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a carrier, out of VA. There is a USS Roosevelt, destroyer, out of FL. He is on the carrier. How confusing! Thanks, Teresa. He says now that he is excited, but wishes he got Japan because alot of Meridian buddies did. But he didn't even request that. He will be happy where he is, I'm sure.
Happiness tempered a bit because he found out that it won't be ship worthy for another 2-3 years...so in dry dock until then. I guess he still lives and works on it?
Lynne: T only held for A School for about 10 days, but he held AFTER A School for a month! So did most others there. Hurry up and wait...we all need to get used to it! He's home now....yippee!
Hey, Lynne! So, hows your back? That is awful. I hope that you are better and back onthat WiFit soon!
So glad Jamie is doing so well. Does he go on to C School? Tell him not to rush TOO much or he may be in a longer "hold" pattern at the end! T held for a month after he finished.
Visit is over with T....he has been at his new duty station for 10 days now. I'm back to the "no news is good news" theme from boot camp since he wasn't too happy when he got there and called often. Now, not as much. MUCH better!
Ok, stay in touch! Way to go, Jamie!
MikeMom--
I went through the withdrawals in January. My son went back to G/L for A School, and has since been stationed in Norfolk, that's the other side of the country for me, I'm on the West Coast. My son put in for the West Coast and was stationed in Norfolk. While he's in G/l you'll be able to talk with him on his cell, during his off duty hours. Take pleasure in talking with him, my son has been deployed for a little over month, and I have spoken to him once, but we email a couple of times a week. I'm so proud of him, and I miss him, but I also know that he is doing what he is supposed to do.
I'm passing the invisible box of kleenex to you, so dry your tears after a good cry, call your DIL and grandson and invite them for dinner, just as if you were inviting your son. It does get easier.!!!

MikesMom: Are you involved with the N4M's group where he is in school now? And once he has orders, join that group too. I think you will find comfort there. Venting like you did here is so good for you...and as you see, you are not alone. I liked mtnmom's advice to call you dil and grandson for dinner, or for a movie, etc. They must miss him too! Maybe having visits together will help all of you., Hang in there...I hope you meet some "veteran" moms who can help you get through this.
Hi ladies, my son will be starting A school Tues 8/3. I am so excited to see him at PIR this Fri 7/30. Yes, diannep, I graduated from "Depper in June" to "PIR 7/30" to here (with a lot of help from some GREAT moms). He will be in Gulfport, MS, much further away from "home". But I will get back some of the communication. Such a relief.
I heard from my sailor yesterday. Gulfport isn't too bad he says, just hot. He is holding, so they can do with him as they please for the next 13 days. Lord, please let that time go fast for him.
Definitely a good thing for my son. He was Depper for about 4 months, then was told after BC that he would be on hold for 15 days. But they were able to start a week earlier. He is a much happier person now.
My son David graduated BC july 23, and is in Meridian, I guess he has maybe 3 more weeks there, he really likes what he's doing, Kyle Melissa, I pray all goes well for her travels!
Hi, Kyle! So glad that you are back. I'm also glad that Ellie is doing so well in Meridian! I'm glad she is enjoying her rate now.....see, sometimes there is a change that is GOOD! Just found out that mine will be home for Christmas for about 10 days. YAH! Going to see him in VA soon.
Hope Ellie continues to do well, feels better and better, and that you are completely well now too. What a time you two have had! But God is GOOD!
Dawn L(Ben's Mom Ship 11 Div 295 PIR 9/2/10) Ben is doing great! He is at Fort Meade, MD now. He is in the mass communications. He is waiting to be able to phase up so that he can have his computer and civilian clothes. I sent a big package to him on Thursday and he'll probably get it Monday. He has duty this weekend , so he's not going off base. He is making some friends and his classes are going along fine. He'll be done with A-school at the end of March. Then he'll get his assignment. Do you have a son/daughter in the Navy? What do they do?Keep in touch and God Bless.
We also planned on giving her a couple of her outfits to take with her, even tho we know that she can't wear them for 3 weeks. Is this also a no??????????
Nothing can be taken back to the Recruit base. Items like cell phones, civilian clothes, laptops, etc can be given to them at the airport on their way to A School if they are GradNGo, but they may not be able to use/wear them right away. For those who are GradNGo in GL, they can get these things once they are moved onto the new base (again, there are rules on when they can use them but they may be able to have them there). For those who are not GradNGo but staying in GL (not moving over until a few days after PIR), you may be able to store these things for them in a locker in town to retrieve later if you have to leave GL before they move over to that base.
Thanks diannep. I sent them this morning but due to Monday being a holiday, he will not get them Tuesday.
Is there anyone on this group that has a sailor at Meridian?
louann: He is now stationed in VA. Yes, he liked Meridian ok. Not too much to do there so he went to the mall alot. Didn't like that he finished finished school April 1st but was in hold until mid-May so he couldn't leave. They had a real backup when he was there...most were in hold for long periods of time...but they didn't have to be in hold long before they started school (many are in hold then). My son is now assigned to a ship out of Norfolk that is currently dry docked. But his rate is office/administrative support, so his job continues even though dry docked. He is loving the Navy right now....
diannep...my son's school starts on Monday 10/18. Not really sure of anything after that. He is a yoeman. I think thats how its spelled. His rate changed 3 times while in BC so I just take one day at a time now. No need to try and figure it all out. I would love for him to go to VA since we live in NC but he wants to go to San Diego. That is just too far away from mommy.
