Feels like forever since I visited this group even though my son only left Pensacola back in April.Contact for us while he was in A school was up and down. But, it was funny how many times  he accidentally pocket dialed me. My husband would scold me, but I would listen to some of his conversations cuz it made me feel like I was there with him.

My son had a good A school experience, made it through SERE and is now at Tinker AFB in OK and loving it there.

Hooyah! My ET son just called to say he passed his comprehensive exam and will graduate on Friday.  And, he's flying home on 10 days leave! The only downer is we won't be able to attend his graduation.
  • TNNAVYPROUD2011

  • ckwinn

Hi all I am new to this my son just got to goose creek on monday I got one e mail telling us he made it that is all I don't know what happens in the beginning can anyone give me a little info on what they do when they first get there.thank you
  • Suzi-OH

They fly out of both airports. Your daughter may not know which one and even when she will leave until the day before PIR. Some are Grad N Go and leave within hours or the next morning....some have a few days.

Mine wanted no junk food after BC. He was eating so healthy there and loved the food. He begrudgingly took a bite of a rice krispie treat. LOL.

  • MamaCindy (MMW TM)

Hi ckwinn. My son went to GC Monday as well. New to this site as well. Is your son planning on MM or a different job?
  • annemarie

To ckwinn the sailors do a lot of waiting around 'til they class -up which just means they just start class.  They will attend some informational sessions including one about the dangers of crocodiles and snakes.  The Nukes are fairly restricted in the beginning.  They cannot leave the base during the week.  Once class starts there are mandatory study hours.  It seems it's fairly easy to get into trouble once they are allowed off base; mostly related to underage drinking.  Boredom seems to often be the norm.  Good luck to your sailor.  Ours will graduate from A school tomorrow and sometimes it seemed as though it would never happen.
  • annemarie

    To the newbees,

Internet service is hard to come by until your sailor can arrange for Comcast or other hookup for his room.  Also cell phone service can be spotted especially indoors and the sailors may not walk while using cell phones; they must stand or sit in one spot.

  • annemarie

Is anyone out there attending ET graduation tomorrow.  We can't attend so I'd love to see some pictures.
  • William in Nashua

annemarie we visited our son in Goose Creek one month ago and it was already hot as blazes down there, his graduation is scheduled for seven weeks from now. He is also an ET student.  Congratulations to your sailor and good luck.

My Kelly is in A school in Gulfport, Ms, she has been there since April. I don't hear from her very much. She stays really busy. She can use her phone now though. I text her every few days or so., sometimes only on the weekends. I don't want to bother her too much but I really do miss her a lot.  Kelly's mom

  • TxNvyMom2011

new mom here with a son in A school in SA, they haven't classed up yet....also does anyone know how long it takes for the yearbooks from BC to come in?
  • ktssong

I am trying to get the word out about Cincinnati Navy week and asking if there is any mom, wife, girlfriend, sister, etc that would commit to coming to a breakfast downtown with one of the higher ups for breakfast and time to answer questions.  The date is set for Thursday morning Sept. 1.  Anyone interested?
  • Riptide11/128

    @ Carol,

It really is frustrating, isn't it? LOL   Yes, my son is up for leave on 7/15 and we've only recently found out when he can leave. He does know when he's going to have to report for duty at his ship after leave, but apparently they have to go through the Navy in order to get their flights home and then to their ship. As for my son, he will not be able to make those travel arrangements until a couple of days prior. It's really frustrating, because he has to pay for his flight home and even though he "knows" when he's done in GL and discharging, he couldn't book his flight early in order to save money. Frustrating!  My hubby wants to take a week of his vacation time, if possible, while son's here, but the up in the air stuff makes it hard to plan! :-(

  • paybacks398

it took us a couple months to get our book
  • TxNvyMom2011

    Thanks DKmom

  • Carol(ship09 Division 136)

    @Riptide,

Son will be going to C school in Texas, where he is at but he might have to get off base housing if they don't have enough room for him.  So that will mean getting a car and added expenses but he still don't know and he is to graduate on 7/25 and be back at school around 8/2 so would like to see him in between...after C school then 6 months of clinical s where he doesn't know...etc...more of the same....hurry up and wait...

  • CorysNavyMom (Ship 11 Div 243)

My son still has 5 weeks of BC left but wanted to ask if anyone's sailors went to boot camp listed as a seaman or an airman and then found out in BC they were switched to the other? My son thought he would do A school at Great Lakes and was just told he would be leaving the day after PIR for Pensacola instead. We are very confused.
  • slapout52

Littleangel, I have a Sailor finishing DC school in GL.  He has maybe 5 more weeks.
  • razen3

My Kelly sent me a picture on my phone today of her in her white uniform, she looks so nice, I am proud of her. Of course I sent it on to relatives too so they could see her. They all liked her picture. She might get to come home for a visit in August, she was sick so her grad date has changed.
  • ebigirl

TxNvyMom2011: We just received "The Keel" (yearbook) on Friday July 1st. Our PIR was 5/6/2011. We received the DVD about 2 weeks before the yearbook. I hope this helps.

  • laverne0491

How about A school in Conneticut. My grandson is there.thanks
  • ISH-MOM

My son just found out he is able to come home. He graduates on Friday.  He had to pay for his own ticket.  For airline tickets the cheap way, call the airline directly and ask for a military discount tickets for your sailors.  they are about half the cost of normal tickets. I found that Delta gives the best rates.  Good luck.

  • TxNvyMom2011

Thanks for the informaiton ebigirl.  Hoping to get our DVD from PIR before a family reunion later this month Our PIR was 06/10/2011

My nephew's PIR was 7/15 and is now in "A" school in San Diego. He called when he first got there and said he was safe and bought a new phone....apparently he has forgotten how to call/text since then. It sure was great to see him though.
  • Lovemynavyson (Ship02/DIV933)

Hey Riptide...That's military life...everything up in the air...we want to schedule a party for my son is home between school and duty station, but it has changed sooooooooooo many times! 3-4 weeks, to 2 weeks, to 4 weeks to now maybe 6 weeks...but he hasn't started school and he's been there almost 3 weeks now!!!
  • josh'saunt (Patricia)

Caught him on Facebook without even calling me! LOL. At least I got a quick hello and a mailing address finally. I have to remember not to get too mushy with him when we talk! Any suggestions on a care package? What are rooming conditions like in San Diego? I thought about sending one of those collage pictures but not sure if he'd have a place to put it.

  • Jeffsmom1380

What group is an E3 rating?
  • Suzi-OH

    Jeffsmom - E-3 is a rank.....a rate represents a job.

My son is Aircrew Avionics and his rate is AWN(AN). His rank is E-3 at the moment.

  • Lovemynavyson (Ship02/DIV933)

  • Central Ca. mom (09/247)

My Sailor's PIR was 8-05 now he is in 'A' school in TX so proud of him.  Looking forward to Dec. when he gets to come home. Was disappointed that we were only able to spend Friday afternoon with him, but we were able to get up and meet him at the airport and spend  from 0130-0730 with him.  Was bittersweet, so happy to see him and so sad to have such a short time.
