Can anyone tell me if we can visit our Sailor a week after they arrive to A School? We have vacation and would love to surprise our Sailor with the news.
I wouldn't do that.. they have to phase up and the first week in a new place and starting school with all the mandatory study time you won't get to see your sailor very much
MommasHeart- We visited our daughter her 2nd week there. She phased up to Phase 2 and we were able to spend the weekend with her. No one told her that all she needed to do was check in by curfew and we could have checked her right back out. She could have come back and stayed at our hotel. We took clothes that she asked for and her golf clubs. Happy planning.
Hi Prayingmom73! My son's PIR was 4/20. We had the day of graduation with him. He was shipped out the next day, so we spent 6 hrs with him at the airport. The family wasn't allowed in the USO, but we went to a quiet corner and talked the whole time. I was glad to be able to spend every second with him. He is in Port Hueneme, CA now in A school. Not sure what the next assignment will be yet, but at least we get to talk more frequently now. They can also get weekend passes during A School, so you can visit if you are close or travel. After A school, they can get either a 2wk leave if they are staying in the US or a 3wk leave if deploying internationally. It's not guaranteed, but could happen. Enjoy your time at PIR. Get a good camera and take lots of pics. It's an amazing performance!

You know that Folger's commercial where the kid comes home Christmas morning from deployment and sneeks into the house, well, facebooked with Kat yesterday, "Don't know when I'm coming home" Boo- I say. "Are you done with school?" "Yes", she said. "When do you leave?" "I don't have my ticket yet?" " Will you come home first?" "idts" is her answer. Do you want to Face Time?I ask. Then, she says, "Got to go back to class" OK......:( . So off to work I go. Dad was wondering about calling her but got busy. I get home from work and Katelyn said Amanda was looking for Kat and she told her she was at Samantha's. WHAT!?! Dad tells her "Thanks, Dumbass" I ask "Kathryn's here?" Dad and Kate try to deny all. Seems that Kat was at the airport waiting for a flight home and had her friend come pick her up so she could surprise us. Dad didn't even know about this. She's home on leave for 2 weeks and then reports to Norfolk for C School until then end of August. After that, she'll be San Diego bound. I'm one happy mom right now!! HooYah!!
I envy you so much. Have a great visit with your daughter. Haven't seen my daughter since December. They messed up her orders and she hasn't left GL yet. Still waiting on her orders and graduated A school in March. She is hoping for June or July. Can't wait. She is hoping for San Diego. I wonder if they know each other. Is she an ET?
Ari'smom-Thanks- Kat was in Pensacola for A School. She PIR's 13April12. She is an Aviation Machinist Mate and will be joining a helo squadron. We were able to visit her while she was in Pensacola since we live here in Florida. Just so excited to have her home. I know this time will go by fast. She'll do RAP duty while home as well. You'll get that visit. I hope it comes soon for you.
Heading to visit my daughter at San Antonio A School in 2 days. I am going to be with her for a week and just found out that she will get a weekend pass with us as long as she is in uniform and back by curfew! This is GOOD news given we have already booked the flight and hotel. :)
@ Phillip'sMom thanks we made it through PIR and he is now in A school. We speak everyday not as long as I would like since this his first week there. Can't wait to go see him since we are 6 hrs away instead of 14 hrs in Great Lakes. Wish tje best to all our sailors.

Hi Everyone. My daughter received her orders to go to San Diego for C school and then finish her deployment there on the LSD 52. Can anyone tell me if there is a group for the sailors on this ship? So excited she will be coming home in about 3 weeks!
It's wonderful to be able to talk and Skype almost everyday for at least a few minutes during A school, especially after the severed feeling of boot camp. Still too far away, but at least we have contact.
My brother graduated 6/15/12 and is in Pensacola. We live only two hours away so it's nice to be close, but he will be going to Japan after A school, so we are thankful for the closeness for this short time. I am so glad for the groups "after PIR!"

momofbp, it is my son in A school. I actually spoke to him yesterday and he did mention that A school will be long and after that he will do SERE schooling or something like that. He said he didn't know how long all this would be but that it was going to be a long time. I want to go visit him in end of July but am worried that I won't have the means to go back when he graduates from A school. I believe he said there was a graduation for A school, right? I would like to know more or less how much time I have between July until the A school ends. I guess I have to take it as it comes, whatever information I can get from him will have to do. He does also get annoyed at me for asking him all the time but yes, as you said I am a mom and want to know what the next step is.

Hi Gracie, when my son was in Pensacola for A school we went to visit for a week...it was very nice there...you can stay right on base at NAVY LODGE your sailor will have to make reservation for your room ...I would suggest going for a visit when you know he will have a liberty weekend (liberty means not on duty) then he can spend time with you even stay at Navy Lodge with you a couple of nights...we had a great time when we went but it was in April and it was 80 degrees not humid yet... we did not go to my son's A school graduation he said not to spend the money it is a 20 minute ceremony I just had him send me a picture of him that day in his dress whites....he is actually coming home for a visit soon we are so happy he has been away almost 7 months! one more thing...Navy Lodge is very reasonably priced usually $65 per night no taxes on that we found it to be clean and for the price you can't beat it... that's for 2 beds in room...cya

I was under the impression that the graduation for A school would be kinda similar to the one for BC. Thanks for letting me know. As I now can really look into booking for the summer since I can spend a little more time with him. Do they get a schedule of when they have liberty weekends with plenty of time? Do you think he would be able to know if he has liberty on a given weekend in July or would it be too soon for that?

Hello everyone...New to this website. My daughter just graduated BC in Great Lakes Friday 7/13/12. She is a QM. Currently in A school. I am very emotional as we just had to leave her there. Not use to this yet. I think the hardest part was seeing her have no reaction to goodbye yesterday. She was very emotional over the phone, however in person it was like talking to a brick wall. That was hard to swallow. Please someone reassure me that this is not the way they will be in years to come! She was always so sweet and showed affection towards family. Now she is cold as Ice. Help!!! Does it become easier as time passes?
Hi Everyone. I just saw this site. I am so glad to find it. It seemed like I was always on our Ship/Division site but I know a lot of the sailors are spreading out all along our great country. My daughter graduated on 6/29 and is still at Great Lakes. Unfortunately for her, her 3 best friends from boot camp all left after graduation and went to Pensacola. She is making new friends but slowly they are leaving too. She absolutely loved boot camp and did very well but I think she is missing her bunk mate buddies. How are all of you?
Deborah, my daughter is GL A school and is a QM as well :) She also graduated this past friday. I noticed during our good-byes, although she hid her emotions (as they learn to during BC) she raised her eyes as to not cry and took a deep breath. As you and your daughter are very close, so am I with my daughter, remember that closeness and, like marine Navy Mom said, they have been through a lot in a short time and are on understandably 'on guard' emotionally and physically right now. Your daughter loves and appreciates you taking the time and expense to go to her PIR and spend the weekend with her I promise! Also, my daughter was a bit culture shocked as they have not seen anyone from the outside world in two, very long months, then all of the sudden they are being given all this love and attention. In boot camp you do not want attention :) Hang in there, you're daughter is still there, she's just been through a lot. Much love, Jodi
ok i know i am way ahead schedual on looking at hotels but being a single mom on a tight budget i have to do things at least 6 mo in advance to make sure i have the funds i will not miss my sons PIR so my question does anyone know if the ramada is as bad as the reviews write. i have read up on it and it seems to have everything i need but you know the saying if it sounds to good to be true it probably is please help

Patrat, my daughter started A school and graduated a week ago, it has been so much easier with her in A school, we can skype/facetime, talk, text, etc daily. Take comfort in knowing that you will be much more connected with your new Sailor now that he's in A school compared to the last couple of months :D

My son had his laptop and cell phone during A School. He had his cell phone on Friday afternoon after he picked him up from A-school check-in. He took his laptop on Saturday evening after his return to the base that evening. I also had him packed a small suitcase with a few personal things like some boxer shorts, t-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes. He took these back on Sunday. He wasn't able to wear them for while. His pants were too big, so be careful what you pack.
Question - what is getting mail like? I shipped a box to my son on Thursday. I sent it priority, so I thought he would get it on Saturday. My son said that they don't get mail on Saturday, so I thought that he would get it yesterday, but he didn't. Hoping today? He is at Great Lakes. Any thoughts?
