I think Camp Pendleton is our next duty station. I haven't actually seen the orders. He is so wrapped up in the training, can't get much out of him!
  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

lol I'm glad my bf knows I don't really want him getting another tattoo. Even though I don't tell him straight out "don't get one" he knows that's what I mean to say lol!

Yesterday I was at work (I sell cell phone contracts) and I was showing my customer my case on my phone and he tells his wife "awww she's dating a sailor!" because I have my bf's picture in his uniform as my background. I started laughing and he told me he was in the Marines so he's worked a lot with the Navy. Thought it was a cute moment :)

Also I was watching Super Nanny, which I hardly ever watch, and they were working with a family who lived out in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA. It was a good show to watch. The mom was taking care of 4 adoptive kids, 2 from Guatemala and 2 from Ghana, while the dad was in Afghanistan.

My Corpsman wants to know which Platoon got Tatted.
  • MrsS

He is in Platoon 3. He said it sounds like something they would do, he had duty last night.
  • JudyB.

JLC,  I know what you mean!  I wish I could have alerted all the moms, GF's, wives and let them know that were were/are here for them.  It's to bad that when our cubs first signed up for the navy that the Navy handed out a flier with a great introduction into the N4M's groups and really played it up!!  I bet there are a whole lot of us out there that wish they got that flier!!
  • vettespace

Linda, I'm so sorry to hear this news.  Each command may treat these infractions differently depending upon the circumstances.  But, the Navy is getting very tough on drinking and driving.  A few of my son's friends at GL got busted for underage drinking last month a couple days prior to my son returning to GL...he probably would have been with them if he was there.  They all lost rank and pay and were restricted to quarters for a while, but were allowed to remain in the Navy from what I understand.  But they weren't driving.  Sounds like your son has a criminal DUI trial and then will have a Captain's Mast more than likely to determine what the Navy does.  It won't be fun, Thoughts and prayers going out for you all.
  • JudyB.

Linda, I'm so very sorry that your world just turned upside down!  On the positive side he didn't hurt anyone nor himself with his vehicle...right?!  So lets Thank God for his blessings that it could have been worse!!  I will be praying positive thoughts that this situation turns out for the better and that this sends a clear message to your cub and everyone in fmtb that...it takes just once and your life can change forever!!  You are a Great Mom!!
  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

Sorry to hear that is happening to you right now Linda. As someone who is still young (21) and at times still foolish with some decisions, it does mean a lot to have your parents support with you no matter what. I'll be going through a tough decision here soon and I already know I will not have my parents support and it does make me feel that much worse about it. Even though you may be heartbroken and a nervous wreck all I can say is to try to be there for your son. He will thank you for it in the end and it will mean the world to him.

I will pray for you and your son. And like the girls have said, it could have been a lot worse. I'm sure things will workout for him in the end. It will just take some minor bumps in the road but it will help make him a better man when he learns from this. Keep your head up!

  • Pam

Linda – So sorry to hear what your son is facing.  Everyone is right though, all you can do is be there and support him every step of the way.  My son J got a ticket while at FMTB for a seatbelt violation.  Not nearly as serious as a DUI, but still something he had to stress about and take care of because the hearing date was set after graduation and after he was scheduled to leave.  He was actually wearing his seatbelt, but his passenger wasn’t.  But, he was able to go up the chain of command to deal with it.  Embarrassing for him more than anything and definitely a learning experience.  I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your son.

dmc - As a parent of a 21 year old, I have reached the conclusion that my son is an adult and can make his own decisions.  It was and still is difficult to "cut those strings" so to speak, but it's a natural process that a parent goes through.  Carol is right, your parents might just surprise you!!  He surprises us every day as he learns to deal with adult issues on his own now.  For him to actually call us and ask for advice is amazing because he was always so hard headed about everything!!

  • JudyB.

Good Morning Pam, Was wondering when we were going to hear from you. lol  Isn't it so true about the maturity process.  I really believe that if parents keep an open mind and our cubs know that we don't have all the answers but are willing to advise and not judge every situation in a negative light that respect grows from that on both ends. Communication is key when advising that information doesn't get lost in translation.
  • Pam

Hi Judy!!  I miss sharing thoughts and updates with everyone!!   I was only 20 when I got pregnant with Jamie so I know all about parents being upset!!  Well, I should say, I was 20 when I dropped everything, moved to El Paso, TX to live with and marry my husband that I had only known for 4 months!!  But I was raised in a very strict environment that I swore I wouldn't do to my kids.  Some things I did the same, most I didn't.  Looking back at what I did, I would wring my kids' neck if they did that!!  Ha, ha.. But my husband and I are still married after all those years, so I guess you could say we were one of the lucky ones.

Linda - These links may help answer some of your questions. While DUI is taken very seriously by the Navy (starting about 15 years ago), one mistake is not career ending. Hopefully these links will provide enough info to set your mind at ease. Good luck.

  • GEZ

Linda - My stomach is in knots along with yours. If (When) my cub makes a mistake, I will be freaking out, too. Hang in there. . .
  • JudyB.

Linda, I'm here with you as a Mother; I'm going on with my day but every minute I have free I'm praying that you're cub doesn't feel the wrath of his Commander...maybe your cub will catch him on a good day.  Hugs...
  • jesspoo05

just getting back on. my phone wouldn't let me get on to comment. i am sooooooo sorry linda for what has happened!! you and your family are in my prayers!!!! i hope everything works out as well as it can!!! i am sure you will let us know when you can! just know we are here for you!!!!

  • Pam

I too have thought about you and your son all day Linda.  It's amazing the support this site can give.  Keep your chin up!
  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

Thank you Carol and Pam for your helpful words...I just hope thats how everything unfolds. And Pam I love the story of you and your husband :)

Linda I hope things are getting a little better. Keep us posted when you can.

Its a short week for our Corpsman so hopefully it goes by fast!

  • Joan F

Linda just able to get on, I am praying for you both that all goes well. Just remember there is power in prayer and you both are covered in that. I waiting to hear if my son passed his test as he had to retake it, don't know if I want to call him and get bad news.

Dmc sometimes us parents can surprise you as my daughter surprised us with a boyfriend who became a fiance and then a wedding date all in less than a year. They are living in So Cal, she stays with his mom to go to school. Yup it is crazy but had to have faith that my girl has good judgement. The wedding plans are in full swing for this July!

  • MrsS

I asked my husband, he has seen lots of Alcohol Related Incidents, he can't recall one that was career ending. Including one involving punching a Chief. He also wants to pass on, "Don't drink until we're done training!"

Forgive him he's 35 and acts like everyone's Dad.

  • MrsS

My husband is is in FMTB, right now. The incidents he knows of were pretty low ranking. He enlisted at 33, he probably shares his life experience too freely.

Linda, remember everything happens for a reason.

  • GEZ

MrsS, My cub is in platoon 3. I think it is great that he has a "sea daddy" - your husband - to keep an eye on him.
  • Joan F

Will keep praying for your son Linda and like Carol said hopefully it will be a good lesson learned early with no one getting hurt. Hope he sees that even when we think we are ok that we can be impaired.

I got good news yesterday that my son passed his test yay!!! He is phase 3 as he failed that test so has to do all that mustering again. Told me they are going out today and shooting guns, he is excited. He missed being able to do the shooting in BC as was SIC with having wisdom teeth pulled so he is really looking forward to doing it this time.

MrsS how great that your husband is taking care of our young men, tell him thanks from us Mom's. There is nothing like hearing things from someone that is not MOM.

  • MrsS

My husband left for BC in January of 2010.  LOL! Platoon 3 has a "Sea Daddy". He takes his job of taking care of his shipmates, very seriously. He loves is Platoon. He always brags about being the toughest platoon.
  • MrsS

He was an EMT and a stay at home Dad. He has loved histime in so far. Age is just a number to him. We live in San Diego, he comes home on Weekends, I'm moving to CP in July. There is only 3 weeks of FMTB left.
  • jesspoo05

well just a few hours form another week down!!! hope all is going as well as i can be!! not a lot of chatter here in a little so i thought i would say a quick hi! so how many of us are attending graduation? i am and thought i would be nice to know who less may be there. i know that a few of you are because of the comments you have made. but they have been scattered throughout the pages. thought i would try and get a collective answer.
  • Joan F

I am planning on driving down to see it jesspoo, wouldn't miss it!!
  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

I unfortunately will not be able to attend :( but my bf will be home that same night! So although I would looove to see the graduation he says it would be silly to spend so much money when I'll be able to see him later. And I agree but I couldn't got to PIR or his A school graduation so I feel horrible!

Hope everything is going good with you Linda. Remember we are here if you need to vent!
  • MrsS

Linda, hope that you are holding up.

We are close to CP, 30 miles down the freeway. If anyone needs anything from a local, let me know. I grew up down here, so did my Corpsman. Yes, I will be at graduation. I missed A school graduation, because he was home that night.

  • Joan F

Thinking of you Linda and hopefully as Carol says no new good news?
  • MrsS

    Congrats to your Corpsman Ruth!
  • MrsS

They were out shooting until 10 last night. I got message at almost 11. They get up at 0330! What a fun schedule!
  • JudyB.

Ruth, I would love for you to post pics of all your cub sends you of his awards!!  I think he does the "Navy Proud"!  Congrats Mom!!

Linda, I know your cub is being watched "big time" right now and that he probably knows it!  So as long as he walks the walk and demonstrates behavior be fitting a Proud Navy Officer...it's all good!  Navy Hugs!!

  • JudyB.

Yeah, Thank our lucky stars that they we not out in the "coldest rain storm" that Cali has had in over a decade!!

My Corpsman is heading to Los Angles this weekend for drills with a dislocated ring finger he hurt at work 2 days ago. ugh!! To top it off he has drills in this mess...

  • JudyB.

Carol, I think it's highly likely that their are other Corpsman that may have the same style of cell phone; wouldn't it seem likely...maybe someone will share his electronic toy and load him up with cell phone juice. lol
  • vettespace

Carol, sometimes the return dates from CAX vary by a couple days at the last minute.  Or, maybe it was when they could take leave upon return.  My son's leave date was delayed two days beyond what he had me book his flight upon return from CAX.
  • Joan F

Ruth how exciting for your Corpsman, how do they earn the blue jacket?  I can tell how proud you must be!

Carol will be saying prayers for your son that all will go well and a safe journey, enjoy the time you get with him and hope the GF is deserving of him lol.

I was thinking of sending a package but then they are going to be out in the field next week so not sure how to do it maybe send to my daughter as she is going to Oceanside this Fri and her fiance could give it to him.

  • jesspoo05

Ruth, congrats to your son! i am sure you are so proud!
well ladies on to another week! i hope it goes fast! i know it will for our corpsman! my bf is looking forward to it for the most part. but they do have 2 humps this week...ick!! i just hope it doesnt rain! good luck to all! almost there!! hope all is going as well as can be!
  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

We are so close to the end ladies! How exciting! Hope this week goes well for our Corpsman as they go out into the field. My bf was looking forward to it also jess and says its one week closer to coming home!

Hope they don't get stuck in bad weather as my bf is barely getting past being sick. :/

Linda- good to hear things are going along smoothly right now!

  • MrsS

Sunny, mid-sixties in San Diego. Overnight it drops to upper 30s. I guess the sleeping bags are really warm. We got my Corpsman back to CP around 6 last night. Sunny and warm. I am so glad he is not on the East coast for Fmtb!

Does anyone know what goes on the last week on training? My hubby say the schedule is blank. Since we can't talk til Friday , I was just curious.

    Almost done!

  • eurekamom

Is there anyone here whose corpsman is classing up in April for FMTB?

  • MrsS

I know of 3 that will be. They have been through Surgical Tech training at the Naval Hospital. They are very well trained Corpsman. They are close to my Corpsman. They graduated Corps School In GL together on July 1, 2010.
  • Joan F

I hope they all doing well, guess they don't get back til Friday? Last time talked with mine he said they were out til Thursday or Friday he wasn't sure. Hope the rain stays away for awhile, forecasts it for Wednesday for us here in NorCal.

Welcome eurekamom glad to have you with us.

Jacqueline sounds like your son is just a go getter. Hope he keeps his head above water lol. What is planning on doing after all this training?

  • MrsS

Thanks, Ruth. My Corpsman was hoping to commute from home that week, depending on what the muster in the morning.

With gas prices, he should just stay in the barracks.

He is authorized to commute, but it was easier to stay.

They will be back on Friday afternoon. On Wed. rain, clear the rest of the week. I was warned that they will be very tired and stinky :-)

  • dmc20 (ship 7, div 282)

Ruth- I was told they will have another test ont he 7th of March I believe and I think that would be the last one too.

My bf also didn't know if he would be back thursday or friday but looks like it will be friday from what i'm seeing on here. He said they had two classes then they would have lunch before heading out to the field. And he was actually able to text me before leaving. Don't they use tents if it rains? I could have sworn my bf told me that the last time they went out but maybe they don't always use them.

  • jesspoo05

Hi all. yes they do get tents but only if it is raining badly! they didnt get them the first night only the second last time. although they where only out for 2 nights last time. maybe cause it is a little longer this time they will get tents. hopefully at least! and yes the sleeping bags i guess are super warm! at leasts thats good! hope the weather stays good at least! and the last written test is the 7th but they have a final practical test that they have to demontrate all they have learned. not for sure when that is. my guess around the 17th or so give or take. the last week is all admin out proccessing stuff and final clean ups and whatnot. another day down! hope they are getting some good sleep but i think they were supposed to have the night hump(hike) tonight as in the dark. ick! guess the one on fri they get to come back to a bbq! although he did say since they can only work with the day light out there they usually get more sleep! yay for that!
  • Joan F

Nite hump yuck does not sound fun. I am thankful that am not camping out right, did that when my Corpsman was in cub scouts. Lets pray that if it does rain it will be light and very brief.
  • jesspoo05

i think this hump was at least 4 miles....ick!
  • Billie

Good afternoon!  Just joined this group b/c my son will be going to San Diego for FMTB in May.  Just read through several of your posts and am finding the information very helpful. . .and a bit painful.  Doesn't sound like a picnic, but looks like the experience will truly help prepare our "kids" for the field.  I plan to share some of the things that I "gleaned" from your posts with my son (he is currently in A-School).  Any advice that I can pass on to him (or me!) would be greatly appreciated!
  • Pam

Billie - Welcome to the group!!  Has your son decided if he is going green or is he going to stay blue?  It is a lot of physical training they go through, but if you son is an adrenaline junky like mine is now, he'll love it!
  • 2proud4wordsnwv

My son sent me some pics from one of their recent hikes. Wouldn't want those clothes in my washer!! They were covered in mud from head to toe but smiling!!
