Oh its been a stressful week so did we already welcome you - mlynnc to the group or is this your first post?  I have found that the Fleet and Family services office at any base can be a wealth of resources for relocation questions.  Have you called the Great Lakes one?  It's an interesting area to live around.  Highland Park and the neighboring suburbs are very wealthy communities while right around the base is very mixed.  When are coming up?  I will ask my son what his friends with wives and girlfriends did.  How long is he stationed there?
  • Coco

So wish me luck ladies...I meet movers over at the house at 9 am to pack the kids up and move them out today and tomorrow.

For those of you coming downtown...there is parking in the building and I have a several free parking passes so depending on how many cars I should have enough for people to park in the building at no charge.  For those of you taking a train you can catch a bus or cab or we could time it so someone could pick you up...my son's girlfriend is hoping to join us so she could pick a group up.  The building is around the Navy Pier/Streeterville area. I will send address and directions via email on Sunday or Monday after the kids are moved out.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Coco good luck, it will work out ok, where are they going?
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Diana and Laura are you planning on going, we could meet up with Annie, train or car and meet up with Michelle!

  • Coco

Debbie...you are funny..."where are they going"...where do kids usually go when they are having trouble...lol..right back to our houses.  The move went amazing...the guys I hired organized and packed up all their stuff and moved it all to my house in under 8 hours.  Now all that's left is their furniture but at least  know everything else is safe.  We are going apartment hunting so who knows they might be living somewhere other than my house very soon...
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

LOL Coco I thought of that after I typed that. LOL  I am glad it all went well and now they are safe. I will keep them in my prays and hope that they can find another place that is safe and that they are happy.

Mary I wanted to see that but I was at work, how was it.  I know the first lady is all for  our military that is so great to hear, I should see if I could find a re-run of that show.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

How much is the blue book price?  It is hard to tell them no, it is her money, but you hate for them to lose money don't you, they work so hard for it.  Well I would go and take a look at it and go from there.
  • Pat L. in IL

Julie, You should take the car somewhere and have a mechanic go over it. Don't want any hidden "surprises". If the seller is on the level, he shouldn't have any objections.

Trying to postpone an obligation so I can join the fun.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Michelle got our call last night sorry I was going to call you tonight, I would love to ride with your but your sound like you have a car full.  I have to see if Annie is going and maybe Diana and Laura.  If they don't maybe I can meet you at your house or somewhere, if you feel up that is ok too.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Michelle how many people can your take?  You might need to buy a bigger car!!!

Hi Sally, how are your doing?

This is such a crazy world we live in, you are right Julie you will have to be careful.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Well I know some of you ladies live close together so if that works for you, you should go with Michelle.  I am so far southwest.  Let me find out from Annie and Diana and Laura if they are planning on going, I would love to go.

Hey ladies, how's everyone doing? I was at the packing party that was held at the Villa Park VFW post on 1/22/11 and I had a wonderful time.It means a lot to me to be able to be a part of something like this.My son,Jeffrey, who is 23,followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Navy on 05/10/2009.He graduated bootcamp on 07/02/2009 and went straight to his training to become an Intelligence Specialist. He is currently stationed in MD and will be going on his first extended deployment later this year.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Susan, that sounds wonderful, what an amazing job he is going to do. Where do you think he will be going after MD?  I have never been ablt to make it to a packing party but one day, but I have sent boxes and boxes to the Nitmiz for Christmas one year and it was a lot of work but a lot of fun, even got letters from some of the men and women on the ship, they were so grateful. We have to do what we can do for your military.
  • Pat L. in IL

Hi Susan, SO glad you joined us!!! It was so nice to meet you at the packing party! How did the job interview go? Have my fingers crossed!!!!
  • SusanG in IL

Good morning ladies, thank you for the nice welcome! My request to join the group was approved several days ago but I've been dragging my feet about making the necessary changes needed for me to become an active participant.

Pat L,I did NOT get the job.I was disappointed at first, but when I thought about it,I really do NOT want to be driving nearly an hour daily to get to work--too much wear and tear on my car AND too much wear and tear on me.The Mapquest directions stated the drive would be 35 minutes, which I can handle, but due to traffic,it ended up being a 55 minute drive.(the company is in Rosemont, near O'Hare.) I still have unemployment benefits and about 6 months of savings so I just have to keep on hunting for the "perfect" job for me.I'm sure it's out there, but it's well hidden!!

Mary,it was nice meeting you as well.As I become more active in this group and with the packing parties,I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

Debbie, from what Jeffrey has told me,he thinks he's going to be in MD until he's released from active duty.At one time he was thinking of making the Navy a career, but I'm not sure what his plans are as of right now. They'll definitely be there a while as he and his wife just bought their first house.

My youngest (the one next to my sailor) also wants to join the Navy and become an Intelligence Specialist, but he wants to get his degree first and go in as an officer. He applied for the Navy ROTC scholarship at the beginning of December 2010 so we're waiting to hear back on the status of his application.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Well if I took a train it would have to be the Rock Island and then I would have to finger out how to get to Coco's place.  Then what times do the trains run on the way home, how do we carry items if we are bring food or something to drink, just thinking out loud???

Susan, they have a house, that is so great.  Making the Navy a career is not so bad, 20 years out with a pension and then can even work part time.  I know jobs are hard to find.  My daughter is graduating in May just finished filling out an application that took 3 hours, boy things have changed since I filled out an application.  I am not sure what my son wants yet, only time will tell.

  • Coco

Oh my goodness we are a busy group.  Julie - we walk a fine line with our kids and their money...I am walking that line right now with mine.

This is so hard helping them recover...I want to make it all better but that is not realistic in this situation.  So Thursday I (with help of movers) packed the kids up and moved their stuff to my house then Friday I went apartment hunting with them and came to a few realizations then Saturday after a few things changed I called my mover guys back and we went back to the rental property today and moved the kids furniture to storage...then I learned there is another garage with stuff, too...ugh...so tomorrow is cleanup and final move of stuff to storage unit.  Then I QUIT.  I WISH...SIGH.  I have moved into my parents this week so they can have space and start to exhale and figure things out.  I have to say...my parent place is nice but living there for a week...not what I want to do...which is probably how my kids feel at my place...lol.  BTW - I am getting a taste of post traumatic stress syndrome which hopefully none of our other kids will have to experience...no fun.

  • Coco

Saturday...I am so all over the place please bear with me...yes I got several emails from you...I am not ignoring just overwhelmed till tomorrow when I am know my kids are out of their lease and all the stuff that is left is safe.  I will email directions to all by Wednesday.  Just figure you need to get to the area near Navy Pier and you will be good.  I will be making a main dish(es) so anyone who wants to bring salads, appetizers, dessert, alcohol...just say the word.  Can't wait till Saturday!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ok, are we ready for the SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Bring it on!!!!
  • Pat L. in IL

Julie, Remember where you can go if it gets too snarky!!!!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Julie got a letter yesterday from your daughter's ship, we read it over the PA for the students to hear, the letter was so nice, really made the kids feel good about sending the Christmas cards.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Hopefully we will not get as much as they are saying.

Julie, I have asked for the letter so if I get it I will make you a copy or I will just ask to make a copy of it.  I asked them to put Attn: Debbie but it just came to the school and the principal has it.

Happy blizzard day! Hope you are all safe and warm!
  • Coco

I hope everyone is warm and cozy today and that Kathy made it to work safe and sound this am.  I am currently watching dump trucks carry snow away on Lake Shore Drive.  I am sooo thankful for this snow day - it gave my body a chance to crash - I think I have been running on "mom" adrenalin for the past 12 days.  It feels good to sit still and relax.

So far Debbie, Sally and Michelle have emailed me for an address for Saturday.  If anyone else needs it send me an email and I will send you the info.

I am thinking we should start anytime after 3 since people are carpooling will need to drive back to someone's house and then their own later in the evening.  I am getting excited to see many of again.  Can we do a head count so I can figure out how many are coming?

  • Pat L. in IL

Coco, Sorry but I can't make it. Hope you all have a lot of fun!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Michelle I had tears in my eyes, he was so grateful for the card, I try not to show any emotion at work people just don't get it.

Well we worked outside for two hours and got everything cleaned up but they have not plowed the sidestreets, I don't know why.  I am off of work again tomorrow the school is closed.  Hope everyone is doing ok with all of this snow.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

The trains were put on the holiday schedule so not many trains are running.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Michelle that was really nice put tears in my eyes, that is what we want for our sailors, be happy and safe.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

What do you think the roads will be like on Sat???

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Hi, I was going to call Annie tonight but I do not have a card from her does anyone have her phone number?
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Julie that is so nice to hear that there are still some good people out there.  I think the roads are good for Sat.

    Michelle Coco said after 3pm.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Hi, just got a note from Annie she is not going anymore so I will not be there either.  Hope you ladies have a great time.  Sorry Coco I really wanted to come.  I will miss everyone.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Julie  think of you everyday, hang in there.  I am sorry you are going through such a bad time.  Daisy is an Australia Cattle Dog.  They have Blues and Reds she is a red.  This is Stephen's dog she is almost four.  She is so sweet!

  • Coco

    Hmmm...appetizers or "surprise" me!  lol

It looks like its going to a fun but small group...so at this point I am thinking about ordering some Chicago style deep dish pizza, making a lettuce salad and a dessert.  Someone else mentioned a dessert but it might have been Debbie who is no longer coming and Michelle said she was bringing a bottle of Sangria. So surprise me or bring an appetizer.

  • Coco

    Julie,

I can't remember - do you have a lawyer or are you representing yourself?

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Her husband made plans this weekend and she was going to drive.  Have not heard from Diana either.  I am sorry I did say I was coming, don't like to do that.  I know it will not be the same without me. LOL
  • Coco

Two get togethers in row - it will NOT be the same without you Debbie!!!!!!

Turtle Cupcakes sound delicious - I will shift from dessert to appetizers.  I am going to call Diana tonight she has been very quiet - I hope her trip went well.

I hope Holly can join us!  I am hoping my son's girlfriend can drive in too - but that depends on how much homework she has this weekend.

  • Coco

I will check back later today and tomorrow am in case anyone else is able to come.
  • Coco

I talked to Diane.  She says and that the trip was fun.  She has not had a chance to get a computer this week has been crazy.  She is going to see what she can do.  Fingers crossed
