This group is for those who have loved ones that graduated from boot camp on April 4. 2014. A place to keep in touch with each other as the sailors continue their Navy journey.
No letter for me yet either. But I have a change of address in with the post office so it may be delayed. Of course I told my son to mail to my new address, but he probably did not listen. I am happy for all who are getting theirs. :)
Two years ago today my son left the recruiters office for MEPS and BC, 24 hours later the I am here call, and into Div 126 he went. Hard to believe!! Time certainly does move after PIR. :)
missingaaron: Diana is correct....RTC made a mistake on the form letters that said 04/10. 04/04 is the correct one! Strange that the wrong date letter arrived AFTER the right date letter? Did you look at the postmark? Maybe the wrong date letter got lost in the mail and that is why it arrived so late. There is alot of lost mail going on down in my area....including 2 of 3 W2 forms expected for my sons! UGH!
...to add to ellen's post below, we welcomed her as a N4Moms veteran on our "team" after her son's PIR and can't imagine what it would be like without her help with the PIR groups! Thanks so much, ellen, for being such a valuable team member! So appreciated!
No letter for me yet. I talked to him this past Sunday and he said he was mailing one out, maybe tomorrow. I have been mailing cards to him about every 2 days. I also am writing a journal for him while he is in PIR. It has helped me, I feel as though while I am writing that I am actually talking to him. I plan on giving it to him at graduation to take on with him and add to it with his own entries.
Wow, ellen0502, has only been here 2 years?? She's such a pro at putting the PIR groups up!! it's always so much fun looking for her sneaky Sailor son in the pics she puts up too~~ :D
Got our first personal letter from our SR today (Ship 09 Div 129). She also sent one to her grandparents. She mailed it Tuesday, it arrived in So Cal today, Friday. She is doing well. She mentioned that she has resorted to using her fingernails as what she calls "recruit tweezers." LOL
Natalia: No problem. My son did the same. About a week or so before PIR, they "update" their lists and that is when they put in the correct names. The names they list need to match the ID the guests will use, so you may want to write to him and print the names as they should be listed.
Yippy!!! Got 2 phone calls today!! He is doing great. Got strep and the flu the 2nd day. Likes his bunk mate. Female RDC is nice. So happy to conference call my other sailor. Gave him some more awesome advice.
My daughter also called, sounds good. I'm glad I kept my tears till the love you and goodbye, she started to cry the minute she heard my voice. Told her how proud of her I am and will see her son enough.
Your SRs are really "in the throw" of the break down period right now, and it is difficult to hear it from them. Rest assured, in the next two to three weeks things will really turn around for them.
SorinMom: I agree with ellen....the breakdown part of Bootcamp is very hard....but the last 3 weeks or so are the "build back up" time. That is a much better time for them. Write to your SR and remind him that what he is feeling is very normal....that you heard from others who had been there before on N4Moms. He needs to know that his feelings are normal....and tell him it does get better! Also, on the illnesses....again, very normal. Lots of vaccinations at one time upon arrival can temporarily compromise their immune systems making them susceptible to any and all germs around in their close quarters. This too will settle down for him so tell him to hang in there. Write every day if possible and get others in the family or friends to write too. Only positive news though! Funny stuff is good too! Nothing heavy....they have to have total focus on Bootcamp but need some levity and inspiration from home!
Does anyone know which airport the sailors going to A school in Meridian MS will be flying out of. There are several in Chicago and none of those airline carriers fly into Meridian. Delta flies to Jackson and Southwest goes to Atlanta and then a smaller carrier goes into Meridian. Any ideas...trying to book flights to go back home but want to be at the same airport as my son.
splachte: When my son flew to Meridian back in 2010, it was with Delta, they flew from Ohare, and it was through ATL. They had a couple of delays leaving Ohare and ending up missing their connection, so were put up for the night in ATL by Delta. YIKES! Sailors on the loose in ATL after being cooped up for Bootcamp! :-) But it worked out fine...they have protocol for that and there was a sailor "in charge". I'm sure they must have behaved! :-)
Having said that, there is no guarantee that will be the same for your sailor (Ohare). You can take a poll on the Meridian A School group on this site and see which airport those sailors flew from, but again...still no guarantee. They fly sailors from Midway, Ohare, and even Milwaukee now, we have been told.
...I suggest that you try and book your return flight on Sunday, just in case your sailor doesn't fly out until then. Most will fly on Saturday, but occasionally they cannot get flights until Sunday and you don't want to miss any time with your sailor! Midway and Ohare are about 25-30 minutes from each other. Milwaukee is on the other side of GL...
Not sure, csandjmom....only SOAR info I found was for the Army? Maybe one of the other veterans knows. I bet Craig knows, but he isn't on here too much. If you want to message him and ask him (he is a retired sailor and has family members in now)....you can find him under the MEMBERS tab up top: Then put in "Craig" and pick the one from Aurora CO (black/white pik of him as a sailor).
Or...maybe one of the other N4Moms veterans on here knows? I hope so!
I have no idea. His contract was hospital corpsman. But he's always been an excellent athlete and fantastic swimmer. He said he scored so high on the swim test they offered him a different contract? And I think I found it, I think its SAR a rescue swimmer.
One of our N4Moms veterans, Lala Ribbon Queen, makes beautiful PIR ribbons for you all to wear at PIR. If interested, go to her page for more info. Hers are very affordable and she gets them to you fast! She has been doing this for the Bootcamp ladies/gentlemen for close to 4 yrs now. Here is the link to her page on here:
Freakin out over the weather. Has anyone been to Great Lakes in April? Looks like it is going to be cold and windy. Trying to get a 5 day wardrobe is stressing me out. It was beautiful when I went in August 2012.
