This group is for those who have loved ones that graduated from boot camp on June 6, 2014. A place to keep in touch with each other as the sailors continue their Navy journey.
I thought about that too, making reservations somewhere, but I've decided to leave it up to my son and whatever time we have with him before he's got to go back. I have the same feeling too that there will be crowds of families with their Sailor graduates so we may just end up going back to the hotel and ordering in. I already wrote my son telling him I'm leaving it up to him - it's his day :).
Christine. I have not heard of them having to be back to RTC by 6, although never say never. It normally is around 8 or 9 pm. Have you considered a mid-afternoon meal instead? That way, you want be terribly pushed.
If you are looking for a nice place to celebrate your sailor, try Lovells in Lake Forest (close by). You could make reservations. It is a little pricey, but I believe your sailor eats for free....and those who have eaten there said it is really nice. Jim Lovell, the astronaut, is the owner.
My sailor gaves us a couple of senarios: they'll get "Cinderella" time= must be back before midnight or he may not have to report back until Sunday night (he begins A school at Great Lakes that Monday). Some others that are going elsewhere for A school must be back that evening.
Last year my Sailor daughter's division had to be back by 6:30 pm because someone in their division messed up something in their barracks the night before, so yes, liberty time can be cut...hoping that doesn't happen with any of the divisions in this PIR!!
Do I remember someone saying that when we walk into the drill hall it will have where the divisions will be standing posted - that way we can sit where our sailors will be standing? I can't find it anywhere...Maybe I'm crazy...
ChristineLI,NY - you lucky duck!! I wish my husband had thought of that! Maybe, just maybe, if I get to talk to him again, he'll be able to do the same.
Thanks everyone for your input. I'll ask him what he would prefer doing and hopefully have a response before PIR day! Received a letter from him today. He sounds happy and said things there are good and getting better all the time. BTW, he's very impressed with all his uniforms!
mrsrds: Correct, there are division sections (you have a choice to either sit in the floor bleachers or in the balcony). There will be an honor guard in front of each division, with the division number.
Jstbear: Sorry to say that there is no overnight Liberty, even for the GL A School sailors (who move over there shortly after PIR is over). They will have to return to base each night, but true that they will have Daytime Liberty through the weekend! Those flying out will most likely only have Liberty on Friday, bussed to airports later that night, flights out on Saturday (occasionally Sunday, but not often....but book your own return travel on Sunday just in case!). Families can visit at the airports with their departing sailors. Bring ID so you can get the airlines gate pass and wait until the plane departs.
For those of you looking for a special gift for your SR-soon-to-be-Sailor, I got a couple of these Challenge Coins for my Sailor daughter when she graduated PIR last year, please check out www.pirgifts.com. Challenge Coins are a military tradition. Craig, who is one of the veterans on Navy for Moms, designed the ones that are connected to the ships at RTC. The name of your SR's ship is right next to the ship number in the Discussion Forum. When you click on one of the coins, you will be taken to a page where there is a video about Challenge Coins. This would be a special gift especially connected to their Boot Camp days! Another really sharp coin is the Core Value one--it has cut outs and a diamond cut beveled edge. These coins are no longer given out by the Navy to the Sailors, so it is up to friends and famiily. My Sailor daughter thought her USS Hopper (Ship 03) coin was "cool."
Hello. My son made a quick call to me today. He transitioned into Ship 3 Div 189 from the RCU unit at the end of April, and about a couple weeks back into training, he called to ask me who to put on the guest list for graduation. At the time, I hadn't decided whether to bring my other son, until the day I was purchasing my flight ticket that I made the choice to take him. Soon after, I wrote my son to request him to make a change to change from my brother-in-law to his brother to attend the graduation. Well his call today was just inform me that he couldn't make the change, per his captain. I understand, and I requested too late. But he's still going, and hopefully we'll all get to spend time with my SR after he graduates. It was wonderful to hear his voice today. He said he's doing fine, and his knee is still a little sore but he's getting by and getting it done. He said for sure he'll be calling this coming Friday again; even gave me a time - 2pm. It was a quick call, but the best minute call :)
Navajosunshine39 : Good to hear that you're son is doing well! Those unexpected phone calls are always a treat! So glad to hear that his knee is doing a bit better, hopefully they're still giving him something for the pain. It's a bummer that he couldn't make the changes to the guest list - from what I had read, they were able to make changes up until the week of PIR. BUT, I hope you all get to spend some time together after PIR is over! Where is your son going after BC?
Praying your SR's knee will hold up to get him through to PIR! Still good his brother can see him after PIR! Be sure to order the PIR dvd, so everyone can see it later. On the day of, if everything is working, other family and friends can watch the Livestream. Call your hotel to find out if they show it and where~~
@mrsrds2012, my son should be heading to San Antonio TX after PIR, for his A-school training. That's closer to AZ, so we're already looking forward to that graduation. I already told my SR's other younger brothers we'll ALL go to that graduation together :)
@CatMom509, I pray so much that my boy's knee will continue to heal, and get stronger, and that he'll finish. He's so, so close right now. I've already gotten requests from other family members who won't make this trip to purchase the DVD, so they'll be able to see his graduation :)
@diannep, we're all very excited for whatever time we can have with him. I'm even planning on meeting him at the airport after PIR, so I can get every second with him till he leaves for A-school :)
Lots of excitement, lots of anticipation, and happy as can be.
Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend and Memorial Day. It was our last weekend with our daughter before she heads to CA. We had a great time honoring our fallen hero's and spending time with our family. We also had two extra Sailors with us for the weekend from VA Beach and it was awesome to have them here. We all went to Atlanta yesterday to see the Braves vs Red Sox game, whoooo hooo GO Red Sox!!! There were lots of sailors, soldiers, marines and other military members and veterans there. We salute them and also thank them for their service to our country :)
zest mom: My husband's A School, he isn't allowed to wear civillian clothes for the first 4 weeks, and by that point we will be all moved into our house down in SC. But, I do plan on bringing him underwear - lots of it.
As for the crying? I cry watching tv commercials. I plan on bringing tissues, and wearing waterproof mascara and eyeliner.
Lala: Hope it made a beautiful memory! I know you loved having the "extras" there too!
Yes, mrsrds is correct. They really can't wear "civies" until they phase up in A School, so just bring a few up for them to take with them if they want to....you can ship the rest later when they are phased up!
Good Afternoon! I wasn't able to get on the site this morning....so good afternoon rather than good morning! :-)
zest mom- My SR requested his comfy jeans (the ones from "THE BOX", a tee shirt and plain unmarked sox, his phone and charger. I'm waiting to hear about the underwear. My son is quite a bit older than most and so I haven't had to deal with his underwear in quite awhile. Would rather not now either!!
@mrsrds2012, Im planning on taking my SR's cell phone, so after PIR, when he's with us off-site of RTC in the short time he'll have, he can call/text friends/family. I believe I can also pass his cell phone onto him once at the airport as he's leaving for A-school, as well as some undies. He's not indicated what else he'd like, but I'm hoping he will tell me when I get his call on Friday so I can bring to him. I'm not crying, as I'm more excited and thrilled to see him on grad day. However, I'll be crying when I see him at PIR, and when I see him off as he leaves for A-school, so for sure I'll need that waterproof mascara too :)
I will be taking my husband his phone and surprising him with his coin and new iPad :) I've read that a lot of men want boxers! Something about the little white undies not be comfy lol! So I've added boxers and some socks he loves as we'll!
Hi everyone! I am trying to connect with anyone who has a son/daughter/spouse who might be starting A-School in GL on our about 6/12....specifically anyone who would be going through the engineering courses. My son's new rate is GSE and there don't seem to be many. I am hoping that I will find someone on this page! Please let me know. Thanks! Also- Congratulations....you are almost to your PIR date!!!!
Here is my list - all to be given to him at the airport:
Underwear. Cell phone and charger. New toothbrush. Shower stuff.
That's it, since he can't have any other civilian clothes. No sense giving him something he can't have. Especially since I'm moving to SC within the following two weeks. But that's it :] Simple and easy.
