Last week it was highs in the 20s, down to near single digits at night.  We've warmed up to the mid 30s daytime, there's some snow here on the benches and in the valleys, a lot in the mountains.  It is wet heavy snow rather than our usual fluffy powder.  That means avalanche danger for the skiers, and a ton of wrecks on the freeways.

Worst problem we have is "bad air" in the valley as car exhaust gets trapped under the layers of cold air.  No wood burning allowed on bad air days!  I am glad I have a gas fireplace now.

  • Mississippi Mom

    Good morning, Ladies!

Weather in Mississippi is always just a toss up.  Monday and yesterday  the highs were in the upper 60's and lower 70's and the lows were 50.  Today it is 45 and will be in the 20's tonight.  Everybody here  is sick. Never time to adjust.

Anti M, had to chuckle when I read about your gas fireplace. We had a woodburning insert in our fireplace but have not had a fire built in it since the icestorm of 94.  So we pulled the insert and bought gas logs last September.  They are sitting in my fireplace but have not been hooked up yet.   Hubby ordered a drill bit to drill through the chimney to hook the gas line to it.  I told him he had better hurry up, my be 80 degrees next week and we won't need it. LOL!

All is well with my family at the moment.   We had a really good time with our kids at Christmas.  I am trying to get back to normal if there is such a thing. I have been sick with sinus crud and my left ear completely stopped up.  I feel like the only thing is say is "huh?   I don't feel that bad especially since I have finally finished all the medicine, but still can't hear worth a flip. My Mom is doing pretty good.  She had to see a retina specialist yesterday and she is hopeful that they eye drops will help Mom.  Now just get them from our pharmacy dept. at our Walmart.

Hope all is well with everyone.  Blondie, you are amazing!  Don't know how you can get so much stuff done..  I say we clone you, girl!

  • Blondie

We have a blanket of snow here, got freezing rain yesterday and last night(lots of ice and cancelations today) and more snow this afternoon and tomorrow. This weekend they are predicting a foot or more! Been a CRAZY week here, Massage therapist and Boss Doctor sick Monday thru???? Other Doctor was sick by Monday noon! Only ones working are me and the Nutritionist. A lot of calling and canceling and re-scheduling....I put on answering machine we were closed Tue. came in this morning to 34 messages! What don't they understand about closed?! I guess Doctor's aren't allowed to get sick. :( Still don't know if I have a Doctor for the rest of the week, wait and see....they have no idea how hard this is on me and scheduling. Was heading to Columbus to see Pregnant daughter this weekend for her birthday, with the weather, we'll have to wait and see on that too! Life is just difficult here right now. I just keep taking vitamins, defusing my oils and Smiling.

  • T-Lynn

    HI All ,

Well, everyone is busy. Naturally, that is normal for Blondie. Been busy here too, but nothing like you - Blondie. Please remember to come up for air.

Congrats on the up coming weddings - 3 and babies  Blondie. With all you do, it is good to hear you have wonderful things to look forward too.

AntiM - why I just to not get it- that you can have such weather. I am glad you have a gas fireplace.

Aww Miss - so good to hear from you. So sorry that your weather is a bit cold. Yes, I am teasing you. actually, I am happy that your weather is not too bad. But to get sick still form the weather is not fun. Hope by now your ear is back to normal too.

Right now, here we area bout to be hit by a bad snow blizzard. Some outlining schools are closing early. So I sent a message to a fellow staffer who is a teacher. Have not heard back yet, but honest - my fingers are crossed that schools close early, or cancel out after school sessions. That would mean me!  then I can get stuff done.

I have not posted lately of all the soap opera I have been going through. But I can now share- it appears over. The court said - I won the house my mother left to me - NOT relatives who were trying to take it from me. Well, when they left - no light bulbs - furnace turned off - and trashed the place.  ONly thing damage was the antique piano.  But we can repair it.

So today we are there - getting the water turn back on! Yes, they had that turned off and left me with a over due bill! Here in my city - I had to pay that to get the water back  on.

I am hoping to sell it - as is. Let you know how it all ends.

Oh - need to split  hugs

  • CindyN

Ariens mom: My son is a navigator on a mine sweeper in Sasebo. Having him on a wooden ship after something with a lot a metal around him took me a bit to get my head around. But they are designed to not set off mines and survive them if they do!  And a small ship has a lot of advantages. He will likely have opportunties to do more than just his normal job (looks good on whatever the Navy call a "resume") and you definitely get to know everyone. My son really likes Japan. Sasebo is a "small" town for Japan, something like 300k. Beautiful part of the country from the pictures my son has sent. We are planning to visit later this year.  The main down side to the local is it another flight from Tokyo or Korea (if you are flying from the US), and then a 2 hour drive to Sasebo.

  • Anti M

Long ago, during Desert Shield, my husband was stationed in Sasebo on the Dubuque. While in the Persian Gulf, they were the support vessel for the smaller mine sweepers.  They'd equip them, supply them, and generally make sure they could do their job without returning to port every few days.  He fixed the radar on at least one of them, because they were short a tech.

Minesweepers can only do their job when not in port, so expect your kids to be at sea quite a bit.  Completely normal for the fast paced "operational tempo" of the forward deployed 7h Fleet.  They'll get to see some amazing liberty ports.

I visited Sasebo, flew into Nagasaki then took the train to the base.  It is on an entirely separate island than Tokyo.  Usual route is to fly into Tokyo/Yokota (commercial vs. military charter flight), fly to Fukuoka or Nagasaki, then take the DOD shuttle to base.

    I was stationed in Yokosuka.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

    Welcome Aboard New Moms!

My son is stationed in Sasebo too. And he too, is on a minesweeper.  Sasebo was his first station back in the early 2009 and now again. Both times on a minesweeper.

Yes, those little ships do get out and about. My sons shared  many of pictures and stories from his many tours.

I forgotten AntiM about your hubby working with minesweepers.

New Moms, just hang on to the Emotional Roller Coaster ride that you have begun.  Please remember, we all here are right beside you. We will do our best to help you through things.

Our best that we do - listen.  talk later hugs

  • CindyN

Ariens mom: My son does like the local food and culture. He has been there full time since August. He loves sushi and ramen so he is right at home. The more Western sushi places are on par with sushi he has had in the US. He is sure there are better places that he hasn't found yet. He did say all the ramen places he has tried so far are very good. For Xmas, my son gave me a hand painted wall hanging he bought from a Japanese couple at a local fair he came across. They even boxed it up in a nice wooden box for him. Besides it being a lovely gift, it is just nice to know that he is going out exploring.

  • Blondie

T-Lynn, Congrats on winner, sorry they were so terrible.  Gentle Hugs

Ariens, My daughter was stationed in Japan for 3 years (on ship) she LOVED it. of course she lived on land.   Start saving money and be sure to visit if possible, it's Beautiful there.

We ended up getting 13 inches of snow this weekend. With wind gusts 35-40 mph. Drifts anywhere from 2 1/2 feet - 4 ft. tall. Not what I'd call a blizzard but they are calling it blizzard-like. LOL Never really lost visibility tho. Now we are -12 degrees with a wind chill of -25! Now that's COLD. Churches closed yesterday some businesses today and schools were already off for Martin Luther King Day. But of course we're at work today and hubby got 2 calls late last night. So life as usual. Didn't get to go see daughter over weekend so trying to plan another weekend.
Hope you all are Safe and Enjoying this weather. Loving it here!

  • Blondie

what a mess!  okay so yesterday afternoon, the wind shifted and blew all the snow drifts from the south to the north.  ODOT did a great job of getting out there and kept the roads passable. About 1:30 this morning the rain started, pouring with pounding winds.  And then the flooding started, they brought the maintainer down scraping the slush, then brought  in bull dozers to punch holes through the sides of the road to get the flood waters away, causing houses and fields to flood. Where the snow was heaviest is packed ice now....!  so you're either driving through water or skating over ice.   Temps. will drop tonight and they are calling for freezing rain changing to snow and then the 20's the rest of the week and single digits or below zero at night.  Yuck, I hate these warm/wet warm-ups!  Would have preferred all snow. :(

  • Stillmybaby

Oh wise moms! I need some advice. I received a text from my son who has been in Japan, on a ship. Now they’re off on a 2 month exercise.

He recently got injured and feels very frustrated and a little sorry for himself. The tone of his text is all negative. He’s down with being on a ship, the lack of discipline among the sailors, the treatment of a female sailor in his shop. And it goes on.

As a mom, so much of the what he says breaks my heart. And I want to respond with hugs and gushy mom stuff. I also don’t want to feed into his negative talk. I feel stymied. I have not responded yet.

I would appreciate any advice, tips on responding to messages like this. Thank you!!

  • CindyN

Stillmybaby: I can only give you advice as a mom. Hopefully someone who has served can give you advice from that side. I think however you respond it needs to feel to him that he is sitting at your kitchen table talking with you. He may have sent you the text because he just needs to hear you say the things that he knows you will say. It is a comfort thing.  If it was me talking to my kid, it would be along the lines of acknowledging that they are feeling down and that is Ok...for just a bit. But then they need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and figuring out what they are going to do about it. How can they support the female sailor, be part of the solution that changes the culture, etc.

As a mom I would hope that the ship's culture doesn't go all the way to the top and there is someone on the ship he can take is concerns to who can provide some advice. But with my son being the first sailor in my family, I can't provide much advice on how to find that person. Hopefully someone else can.

    Best of luck.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Sending warm heart messages to all. Even though I am freezing here in upper Illinois! And I mean FREEZING COLD !!

And would you believe it - I told my sailor about this weather and he asks for pictures. Then tells me he misses this.He was my outdoor kid - just loved the outdoors.

Hi Stillmybaby. I know your feeling. Had that happen with my sailor. The the advice you got from Navyfan and CindyN is right on.  OUr best thing to do - listen. And then send a care package. With enough items to share.   sometimes a package from home means the most.  And put silly fun stuff in it. And treats.

A couple of times - our pet turtle sent him a package and letter.  It had a traveling size games - chess, checkers, Yantz, Old Maid, old toy games. If you have ever eaten at a Cracker Barrel they have those peg and hole game on the tables - things like that. A photo album with pictures form high school an college and events at home. Treats to share with others. One of the best things was those toy airplanes you wind up with a rubber band.  And a book how to fold paper airplanes and the book on origami dollar bills.

It was like getting a piece of home.

It helped my sailor and at times I still do this. Last year I even mailed him a real mini pumpkin because he wanted a Jack o Lantern.  i do not suggest that though. Mailing that package was the first time it didn't arrive for 3 months!  When he got it - he and his buddies were laughing so hard. My sailor held up the zip lock bag of liquid pumpkin. Just a stem and seeds floating around in the liquid pumpkin.

So send fun things - treats - enough to share BUT no REAL pumpkins.

Keep us posted how he is. And we all here believe in him too.

Need to get along. Oh that weather is changing again. My dad was an Earth Science teacher and he told me that one year - bitter cold would return. He always talked about teh earth doing its cycle. Every 30 years - warmer to colder - and over again.  Like a mini Ice Age he would call it. And I can remember when I was in grade school - we had this weather like this for month.

Have a good day all hugs

  • Blondie

    Great Advice!  Praying here also.

T-Lynn I'm with you it's too cold to do anything.  We're eating soup every day and hoping our van/truck starts. wearing layers and layers of clothing, coveralls, scarfs, hats, 2 pairs of gloves.....too cold to snow this week so just wind chills and blowing of course.  Hard to keep the house warm and the pipes from freezing! But this to shall pass.

    Everyone stay warm and safe.

  • T-Lynn

    HI ,

Blondie: Well, finally warmed up. Now its mud puddles and more rain. All I can remember is that picture you sent once of a mud snow man. lol

One good thing - the Ground Hog did not see his shadow !!!! Spring early.Yes, I know - Spring is March 20th - BUT - not seeing his shadow means less chance of extreme Winter weather.  Ok now I am knocking on Wood .

Wish all a good day. hugs

  • Blondie

T-Lynn, I like the way you're thinking but.... not holding my breathe! LOL

This past weekend warmed up so we went to see our daughter and SIL (the ones expecting) We spent Saturday working at their house, changed out dishwasher for a new one, got rid of a chair and couch, brought a tv stand home to fix for one of our sons. Husband measure a window and got it ordered so he can replace it next trip (3 weeks?). Sunday we went maternity clothes shopping and SIL wanted to do a baby register (they have 4 showers coming up) Daughter is dragging her feet, too tired, too busy and maybe a little scared, Just not Ready. So we compromised :) We walked through all the baby aisles and made a list of what they would need as far as their life style and room in their Condo (3 stories). This way they can research pros and cons....(like car seats etc.) and hopefully agree. LOL
Only down fall was my husband did fall on the ice. hit his head then yesterday tweeted his low back, had to pick his leg up with his two hands to move leg. Ugg always something!

  • Mississippi Mom

    Blondie,

Hubby..OUCH!  Bless his heart.   I sure hope he is okay.

I will be happy to send you some warmer weather.   We have been in the 60's for the past 4 days, and are suppose to hit 70 before we have cooler weather moving back in.  I have daffodils (buttercups) popping open.

Bless your sweet daughter's heart.  I hope she gets to feeling better soon.  I understand, I didn't ever feel good while I was pregnant with both of mine.   I am sure they will get their list together with all that they need.   I know they appreciated all that y'all did for them.

T-Lynn, I am counting on the Ground Hog being right!   I am so ready for Spring.  My Mom keeps telling me that she hopes that if we have winter we do it now instead of when everything blooms out and gets killed.   I know she is right.

  • Blondie

Miss, He's in pain but continues to work :( and complain a lot, as men do. No thanks on the weather I prefer it colder. And yes, I prefer snow over rain. my body does not like the rain, or damp cooler weather. Cold and snow I can stand or hot and dry. Spring and Fall are my worst. Although my favorite seasons. New life and beautiful colors! I agree with your Mother, lets just stay cold and get winter over with, don't want to frost our plants and trees.
Daughter is not sick or having cravings, just tired all the time and her legs get hurting....She is still taking those shots and Suppositories every day....special diets....just trying to carry the baby long enuff that it's safe to deliver early. I suggested doing a couple baby showers AFTER the baby is born, just so stressful right now. :( I think most her friends and family think since she finally got pregnant all is well, NOT the case! I'm like what you need; a car seat and a place for the baby to sleep, we have Plenty of sheets, blankets, clothes.... They are VERY appreciative. His family is in your face do it our way, we're laid back and what ever you need let us know. They have already asked me to quit my job and move in with them. I have A lot of issues with this but told husband if she breaks down and cries and begs again, I fear I will give in(for now). Positive thoughts and Prayers appreciated :)
  • Mississippi Mom

Blondie, I will definitely be praying for your sweet daughter, and baby, as well as you, too. I would be just like you, ready to do whatever is needed. You are giving them very wise and sound advice to do some showers after the baby gets. That is the most important thing right now. Keeping baby healthy and Mom stress free. Nothing else matters.

I will also be praying for your hubby. I have one just like him, so I totally understand.

My sister and I both went to Mom's house yesterday (not at the same time) and picked her a bouquet of buttercups. Her room looks really happy and cheerful. We both wanted her to enjoy her flowers. I also gathered enough for me, and also brought a vase of them to the office. We are pretty gloomy, still in the upper 60's, but have drizzle, so these little buttercups are sure brightening my day.
  • Blondie

I love the Cheeriness and thought of Buttercups!

Meanwhile in Ohio, Mother Nature has another Mood Swing. After a day of heavy rains, taking 85% of our snow cover away, Dense Fog started in the early afternoon and continued throughout the night. Flooding starting around dark last night.  Today's high temperature 63, thunderstorms with heavy downpours, flooding continues, rain will change over to a heavy wet snow, Low tonight 18!  Stay Safe, Stay Warm.

  • T-Lynn

    HI From Popsicle Land !

And I mean that. We are frozen over. Ice covers everything. And we are expecting more tonight. Strange thing, at this very moment it warmed up a bit and we are thawing. Only thing I see snow flakes ever so often.  I am wondering if I will have another snow day. Or Ice day.

Also it is this Saturday is the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet. WE have missed so many days - there is no way to know how many are coming. WE could have only 20 and end up with 200. Now tell me how to order the fried chicken and cake?!  Let you know how it goes.

Blondie, my heart goes out to your daughter. Fingers crossed she continues well. At least you will be their for her.  But really - he just had to fall and hit his head!  That poor man. Sending positive healing thoughts his way!!!! ANd some to calm your nerves.  Keep us posted on how things are going. We all care about you.

Well Hello Miss!  So good to hear from you and very happy to hear that you are warm! I like winter - but this ice is another thing. Doing ok - I have been lucky. I have been able to beat the storm, been to the grocery store and get inside before anything major hit. But to wake up and see your hubby's car totally encased in ice! He had to chip away just to open the door.  Buttercups are a pretty flower. How sweet for your mom.

Sorry need to split - have grandson to watch. And he need my  attention .

    hugs all

  • Blondie

Oh T-Lynn, I remember those years of Blue & Gold Banquets  and car races! (I forget their names, made out of wood blocks…). And winter is such a hard time to plan anything! Strike for the middle (?)  We always donated our left overs to the Golden Age Center or Soup Kitchen. Keep us posted.

Thanks for all the good wishes for my daughter and husband, helps me to know, I'm not alone.

18/-3 this morning, that wind howled all night!  snow storm, blowing sideways. LOL

On the Navy front, life is as crazy as ever.  Still not sure which deployment Joe will go out on.  He'll leave either July or Sept. to different sides of the world.  He just got back from a 10 day training out of state and is getting ready to leave again.  In March he will be gone 3 weeks and then come back and have to do training there, this time him being the trainer.  He was gone for her mid-terms and will now be gone for her finals. They only have 1 working car even tho they own 4!  1's a doner for parts, another an antique, he was hoping to have the 3rd one up and running but with all this traveling and training. :(  So daughter is hoping to use the car while he's gone, after she graduates to find child care and look for a job.  But hard to get a job when you don't know when you'll have transportation, and hard to sign up for daycare when you don't know where or when you'll be working. I feel for her, Really I do but they put themselves in this situation. they both had  working cars (yes, old but...) traded them in …..  I told her she could come home for March! :)  but when he's home he will need the car.  Then I offered to come out for March, even tho our plans were April for T's Birthday.  She said no to this also. she'll want to take T daycare shopping with her.  So okay she doesn't need my help just wants to complain???

So as usual, I throw my hands in the air and say, Let me know. LOL

Hope everyone is safe and warm. HUGS

  • NavyMum

    Hello all

For those of you in the frozen parts - stay warm. It's been in the 80s here the past couple of days.

@Blondie - perhaps she just feels the need to vent to someone other than Joe? And you're safe to do so too? I know you would like to be able to fix everything for them but...there is something to be said about learning from experience.

@T-Lynn - Good luck with the Blue and Gold Banquet!

So...anyone know how soon before a PCS they usually get hard orders? DS is supposed to leave Japan in mid April  - he knows where his next duty station will be but thinks he'll need to do training before reporting and of course we're all hoping for some leave also so we can see him for the first time in 3 years.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

NavyMum, He should have a 3 week leave before leaning for Japan.  He will need to make contact with his sponsor too. His officers will tell him his sponsor's name and how to reach him/her.  Just don't get frustrated if he can't reach the sponsor - it happens. Also, have some cash already changed to Japan's currency and DO NOT FLY in uniform!!!

I believe military does not have to pay for extra weight of luggage.  But things have changed - so check that first with the airlines. ALos, he can show his military card at the counter and have him ask if you can come along and wait at the gate with him.  My hubby and I did with our sailor many of times.  You just have to show your ID. The airlines will give you a pass.  Its nice to have that time together.  We always have a breakfast at the airport.

And does he have a civilian passport?  GET one if he does not. And YES he will need one!!!!  If he has to fly out of another country for a non-military issue - he needs that passport!  Navy gives  him a military one - but the civilian one is needed at times.

Well, that's all I can remember.  My brain is still frozen and I have to get ready to chase some cub scouts.

Wish all a good day  hugs to all

  • NavyMum

Thanks @T-Lynn. I probably wasn't clear enough  - he's been in Japan almost 3 yrs (his first posting) and will be coming back stateside in April-ish.

  • Anti M

They usually get hard orders about three months out or more.  Depends on how the fiscal year is going for the DOD.  If he needs a C school en route, they work the leave around the school report date.  It usually comes after.  Does he have a lot on the books?  30 days after leaving Japan is not unusual.

  • NavyMum

Thank you Anti M - not sure how much leave he has on the books - I'll ask. He did say he expects to have about a month leave so presumably he has enough to cover that.

His 3 years in Japan will be up in mid-April but no hard orders yet....hopefully soon. His sisters (12 and 18) are very excited about finally seeing him again.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Sorry for misunderstanding.  But you all must be so happy he will be coming home soon.

Me too - my sailor's should be coming back to the states in April or is that May? With all the crazy stuff happening here of late - I must be getting a foggy memory. Anyway - it will be good to have sailor back in the states soon.

Hope all are doing well. Weather here  is weird.  right now rain - that will change to snow and ice.  Again. I feel school closings coming on. IF that happens - I am going to take a LONG nap!

Only gossip I have - the childhood home deeded to me is finally on the market for sale. Fingers crossed it will sell soon and become a happy home for a new family.

Wish you all a great day  hugs

  • Stillmybaby

Can we, as family, complete our sailor’s tax return?
  • NavyMum

Thanks @T-Lynn - looks like he's been extended a couple of months extra but should still be able to come home on leave this summer just June or July instead of April :(

@stillmybaby  -  why would you want to? There's tax assistance on the base and surely your sailor is the one with access to all his/her tax documents? And doesn't the taxpayer have to sign the return?

  • T-Lynn

    HI

I believe NavyMun is right about the taxes.  I remember there is help for them to get their taxes done too.

Yes, I know about those extended days - months!  Get things all ready and poof - out the day it goes . I finally learned to just relax and ride the waves about any orders. Just took me a few years to learn that.

    Hope all are doing well.

Hey - check in time all!  My gossip tank is low and I need some news about all.

Looks like my grand-daughter might be making an early arrival. now - I think - actually I hope it is March 17th!!!!!!  WE need a bit more Irish around here. And does she have attitude!  Still will not cooperate with any ultra-sounds. But otherwise - doing ok. Daughter n law is ready! ANd she is all baby - no weight gain on her!!!  But this time - I bet there will be stretch marks.  Any ideas to help get those things to disappear?

Oh - good news. The house deeded to me from my mom - well it went on market Wednesday the 20th and already had two showings.  Well text last night from realtor - want to meet today. There are two offers on the table for it!!!!  Keep you all posted..

thank you for the positive vibes.  hugs all

  • T-Lynn

Riker's first ride on a carousal.  Look at the wonder and joy in his eyes.

  • Anmarie

My sailor just got orders for Japan.  I am excited for him, but its a long way from this mama.

     I have lots of questions.

    1. do they live on base for housing?

2 Do they leave their car for 4 years in the states?

  • NavyMum

T-Lynn - while I wish he would be home sooner, the timing has some advantages so I won't complain much.

    Riker is absolutely adorable!

@Anmarie - depends on the base and their rank - mine was in a barracks until he made E-5, then he moved off base to a Japanese flat (he's in Okinawa and shore-based)

I'm not sure if the Navy will ship a car to Japan or not - they do drive on the other side of the road so that's a consideration also. Mine left his truck here and picked up an inexpensive used car there - I suspect he'll sell it before he comes back this summer.

It IS a long ways away but at least these days there's texting and email and skype...it's made it easier for us. Back when I was expecting my Sailor and when he was a baby, I was stateside and his dad was overseas - we had to make do with letters and a very rare (and very expensive) phone call.

Do encourage him to explore Japan - it's a beautiful place and I've loved all the photos and stories my son has shared. It's really been a great opportunity for him and I'm glad he's been able to travel on leave and explore.

  • Anti M

Taxes: there are free trained tax volunteers on every base, almost every command.  There is little to no reason for a family member to do the taxes for them.  If they are deployed, they can ask for an extension until June 15, easy to do even aboard ship. My husband used to be a tax prep volunteer when he was in the Navy.

  • Anti M

Most American cars are not eligible to be licensed in Japan.  With public transportation being so good, cars are really not needed at all on some bases.

Junior sailors live on base in Japan.

  • Stillmybaby

Thank you for the tax advice. I had to laugh to myself when my son said he trusts my ability over that of someone on base. I’m still laughing. Anyway, He got them done and sent off. And all is well.

  • Kim

Does anyone have experience contacting the Red Cross when a family member dies?

My sailor is underway for another 3 weeks and his cousin died yesterday.

I plan on contacting the Red Cross to contact my son.  How long does the process take?  Will they tell him in person?  Will he be able to phone me?  Any advice will help.

I wasn't sure if I should wait until I have all the answers about the funeral or contact him right away.  It is a criminal investigation, so my sister can't make arrangements yet.  Her husband died from cancer last year and this is her youngest.

Kim, I am so sorry for your loss.  Unfortunately, the Red Cross will not process a contact request for a cousin, and that's not considered immediate family.  You can try, but they may refuse.  Try to contact the ship's ombudsman to try to get a message through.  You should be able to find that on the ship's official page.

When my husband died, RC would not send a message to his command.  He was on shore duty, and we had spoken on the phone, and his command decided to give him time off anyway to be at his uncle's bedside.

Not sure if red cross will send a message for a cousin but in the circumstance  that someone does get a RC message the message goes directly to the command. The command will then go to the sailor and tell them.  Also it can be very quick. My family semt one a out my dad to us i taly. ( shoreduty)  Before i could even call my husband  to give him a heads up his command had people getting their  stuff together and would be leaving to retrive him and replace him on duty. He worked at a satilight base almost 2 hours away so the base had a special  van they all rode in to go up there.  My husband was home in 3 and half hours.

TAXES: h and R block is on all the bases and Military one source.com has a free (yes really free) service. They even have people on hand for questions.

CARS: DO NOT SHIP  A CAR TO JAPAN. We drive on the other side of the road here.  And all highways are tollroads. Also cars are super cheap from outgoing families amd sailors. Like well under $1000. But also i know on our base sailors under E5 can not own a car.   The process to get an American  car to the emissions testing levels they require can be crazy and the test alone is something like $5000.  If your car fails it you have to fix your car then pay it again for the next test.

Kim, I am so sorry for your loss.  Sounds like it was very sudden if a criminal investigation is involved.  Prayers for all of you.

Haley, thanks for the information about the cars in Japan.  I will pass this along to my Sailor.  One other question, do many sailors live off base in Japan? My sailor will be an E5 soon so he said he could do that, but without a vehicle, how hard is it to get to work?

    Thank!

  • Kim

AnMarie, the train system is fantastic.

My sailor did not have a car.  He walked and learned the trains.  They are in Sasebo, so he lived a 20 minute walk.  You walk that much to get around base.

    Some sailors purchase a bicycle.

I lived off base in Japan for several tours.  Train, bus, walk, bike.  Cars are not the most efficient way to get around there, and the public transportation is fantastic.  Also, there is limited parking offbase, so he might have to walk a mile or more to a rented parking spot.  We paid $30 a month in the 80s to park my husband's Harley when he got orders to a satellite base and needed to commute.  I lived within walking/biking distance to Yokosuka base.

The Red Cross gave the Ombudsman phone number.  She called the Commander and he phoned the house from a government phone within 2 hours.  My husband spoke to him, he is pulling in tomorrow somewhere and he will phone me and my sister.  He is really worried (as we all are) for my sister.

    Thanks.

  • Anmarie

Thank you Kim and Anti M.  This helps so much.  I'll let my sailor know.  He will be in Yokosuka.  I am guessing it is the same situation as you guys had.  Thanks again

  • Kim

Anmarie,  a friend of mine that worked in Yokosuka when he was in his 50's bought a bicycle instead of getting a car. Even though his company would have paid for it.  He said it was easier getting around and outside the base.  He had the option of renting a car for a day.  I am not sure if our sailors can do that.

  • Anti M

If he does need a car, he can find one being sold by someone PCSing in most cases.  The insurance goes with the car, not the driver, so look for cars with lots of insurance left on them.

Our last year there, someone gave us a van they didn't have time to sell.  We had to park it on base, and gave it to a charity which was shipping used vehicles to charities in Africa.

A motorcycle counts as household goods and can be shipped that way.

  • Anmarie

Thank you for your help!  I'll pass it a long to my Sailor.
