Susan... I think crocheting is faster... The lady that taught me knew how to do both and always regretting not teaching me how to knit first because she said it takes longer and I would never want to learn to knit due to that... that was over twenty years ago and I still have not learned to knit!!! :) guess she was right!! I get in modes that I could crochet a blanket in a few days ... I just need the yarn.

Hi evry1 my sons boat popped its head out of the water today and he called me. I was telling him about this site and the wonderful moms. I also told him about this plan for blankets he thought it was so cool He thinks you are ALL AMAZING MOMS, and said this will mean so much to our sailors ...

oh Kate I'm so happy for you and yours.enjoy............as far as the labels what i'm doing is for the lankets that were donated to us that I have recieved, I'm making little cards to attach to them so they know who thy are from ..as far as different labels you would have to as Terri but I would think it would be xpensive and I'm sure we have a huge shipping expense in frount of us ......maybe we should wait for Terri to let us know how she wants to handle this since it is her baby....if you look up a little it there is a link for hte sizes.and I know that any hand made blankets a welcome

Hi guys I also think we should add "Fair yarn and following needles" with our advertising how about putting it on the labels.......something like mae for you with love and then "Fair yarn and following needles"......and we can always add little postcards for the ones that aren't from moms.

Hi guys just wondering Terri are we going to keep the orginal labels for the blankets moms make? I hope so ,,, I love the idea of fair needles....being added that was such a great ides i said it to my son when we got ready to hang up and he said well that's cool mom.( so i had to explain to him i didn''t come up with it),,,lol,Also Terri are you in need of money for all of this ?. I'm going to add the bank name to my flyer for my coffee cans the account is knit for the navy right?

Hey I forgot I work for a grant funded Domestic Violence Shelter I can talk to our grant writer too....maybe she will have some ideas what grants might be right for us.........

Believe me for everyone that is negative there are 2 that are positive. The 15 quilts that I'm sending are because I asked my friends for help and then one day after working midnights and taking a nap I woke up to the quilts on my front porch ................don't ever be afraid to speak up girl I got your back and so will all the sailors that receive their blankets.................we are just getting started and TOGETHER we will continue.

ok evry1 Terri I sent off 5 quilts and it cost me $16 I wish ther was a way so I don't have to ship to you and then you to them...........any ideas guys

as far as blocking goes I'm lucky that I can single crochet blankets, and I figured I'm always curled up when I use one it is ok if it is crurled up too.........lol

every time I get an IM or aphone call from my sonwhen he is underway .........it really makes me thankful, I can't imagine how it was for families before we had so many means of communication ..............I think about how long you would have to wait for a letter...we are so blessed and i hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend

OH MY !!! That is absolutely AMAZING!! My daughter is fresh out of A school and was assigned to the USS MASON !!! I am SOOOO excited!!!

Jeanne that is beautiful now I'm jealous Maybe we can join to get one of her blankets.......

my daughter has been assignned to the Mason and in researching it they are a small ship, only about 370 sailors, so it's a good one to start with. Courtney is SOOO excited to have her ship be the first one, she is looking forwardto being able to tell her fellow shipmates that HER mom helped with the blankets.... I have got to get one done to go to her ship.!!!

Carol I see that the Mason is deployed till March/April so it gives us a minute to get the blankets done.........lol

I guess my question is will we be having a blanket for everyone on the ship?...if not how will they decide who will be getting one?

Just an idea...you might send the quilts to the ship and have the ship's morale group raffle them off and them the money raised could be used to purchase games, trips, or various other things that all the sailors could benefit from.

Teri I agree about the sailors having to spend $ to get a gift.... I'm thinking that not everyone will want/need a blanket.... They're are those out there that are "hot-blooded" and a blanket would be un-needed or un-wanted. It would be a very hard task to hand out 200 blankets to 300 sailors... I think the fairest way would be for all those that wanted one to put their name in a hat and then they pick names. Simple idea but I dunno... it will really depend on how open the commander of the ship is and what he wants to do with it. I think?!?!

All I know is I don't envy anyone that decision!! Good Luck

I know on the Monterey that the sailors pay a small amount to get a bingo card and then winners get prizes of cash or electronic devices. Seems as though they are not paying for the blankets but for the fun of being together and doing something different.

I think they pay twenty five cents a card and then play for prizes .

The money they pay goes back into the morale fund.

hey sisters..........I didn't ask my son about the ships but for the boats (subs) he recommended that we contact the ombudsman, and from what I have been hearing on different sites this might be better than contacting the CMC. I feel that I would not want them to be connected to money at all. just great big boxes of love from moms etc.... everywhere.....how about the rest of you

Thank you JerseyMom I was thinking about using my spacebags when I sent the quilts, but thought that would get to expensive this is great.
and Terri I was wondering if we do wrap them in bags would you want us to put a post-it on it telling you if it is for a girl, so if we do have a sub you can pull them out?

I can't even read a pattern I jusr remember my Grandma telling me no matter what you do just make sure you use the # of stiches in each row ( and I'm not always sure I do that.............they will love the fleece blankets they are soooooooooooo snuggly

I"m am also sorry for the loss of family that so many are feeling. I also agree that no matter what our beliefs are we will be there for each other. I would like to take the time to tell everyone in this group that I so much appreciate how up-beat each and every member has been, but I'd also like to say that we all have bad days and different beliefs and building bonds and being there for each other no matter what is why I love this site and if anyone would think that "anyones" life is a waste well ....I would just pray for them
