Joni, It is a beautiful afgan. I'm sure he will love it.
  • lauren

I have 5 ready to ship ....so I will try to get them off tomorrow
  • LLovesmysailor

I was about to send you an afgan, until my son asked for it as a house warming gift. Since he is my son, has a new townhouse, and is a Sailor, I couldn't say no. I'll start working on a new one soon.
  • LLovesmysailor

Hi everyone, You'll notice a small change in my screen name, but its still me.
    Lyn
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri. What could go wrong?? Well when I was a kid my dad decided to make pickles in the basement. He got these big crocks and put in the cucumbers, the pickling spices and then put lids on them. He just didn't read all the instructions. Like put something heavy on the lids to hold them down and burp them occasionally. Late one night we heard small explosions coming from the basement. We (OK, my Mom did) ventured into the basement to find the lids flying off the tops of the crocks. There was pickle juice and a small pickle or two all over the basement. Good luck with the pickling project. LOL
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I just wanted to tell you that, if you still need some one to sew squares together just give me a yell.
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, How long to we have to get them to you? I have all the pieces knitted, I just need to get them sewn together. Things are a little crazy around here. We are about to be under major construction again. I'm trying to get all the items bought before the contractor needs them.
  • LLovesmysailor

I'll try and do that. But it really isn't all that hard, it all in the planning, as they say.
  • LLovesmysailor

Nope, Hold onto the scarfs for a while. Then you can either send them to me or directly to our adoptees. Right now I'm up to my ears in a basement (sewing room) reno and I have no place to store them. I'll post my address in a few weeks. Some one remind me, OK.
  • LLovesmysailor

Teri, My non-knitters are doing scarfs out of fleece. Just buy the tie dyed beige color then cut it into strips that are 7 or 8" wide and the width of the fabric ( which is close to 60"). No fringe! If you want to learn to knit, just knit every row until you get to 60". I use sport yarn (desert camo), #9 needles, and I cast on 30 stitches.
  • LLovesmysailor

I will have at least one done by then and possibly two by mid-December.
  • lauren

ok How is everyone doing???? Terri sorry I have not got my box off to you I promise you will have it and more on time........We have a young woman (40's) in our TRIO group at school that has been told she has cancer and they only give her to the end of the year....she has a great spirit and is try to finish her schooling but she has been denied medicare to date so I have been using my extra time and money working on fund-raising for her so please know that I think of this group of wonderful sisters daily and I will have blankets to ship........hope this finds all with songs in your heart and smiles on your faces.huggs
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I had an afgan to mail but my son asked if he could have it for his new home. I'll be finishing another one soon and sending it off as soon as I can.
  • LLovesmysailor

I use to knit or crochet while at my son's swim meets.Since he only swam in 4 races, I had plenty of time to knit. Now I knit while I watch football on the weekends or while I watch TV in the evenings.
  • LLovesmysailor

I didn't get any knitting done, but I did get one almost sewn together. Now all I need to do is put the edging around the outside. I'm hoping for the end of the week. Right now they are working on our basement reno. Every time I get something started they call to ask me a question.
  • LLovesmysailor

I am so with you. I've got 2 afgans started. Halloween items that need to be finished and 35 pillowcases to be shipped out next week (don't ask). In the middle of all that is the basement renovation that will be the new home of my sewing room. Good Luck!
  • LLovesmysailor

The contruction continues. They are now telling me it should be 3+more weeks. But at least all the items are here and waiting to be put in in the right order. Years ago when my oldest was leaving for school, I went into his room and started measuring the room. I turned around and he was leaning in the doorway. He gave me one of those looks and said "Mom, I'm not gone yet!" OOPs. I'll put some pictures on my page so you can see the progress if you'd like.
  • lauren

I everyone ..............sounds like everyone is busy busy busy .....I'm so happy that we work so hard to buy all these modern convinces to make our lives easier ........ well Terri I finished my afghan so the box of blankets will be on it's way to you .........who are we working on now....ship or sub....
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I mailed out a box this morning. Its got a fleece blanket in it. I forgot to put my usual check in it, so I'll put it in the afgan when I ship that one.
  • LLovesmysailor

If any of you are shipping scarfs to me, could you please send them as soon as possible. I will be away the week of Thanksgiving and now I will need to travel the following week. My son's sub is getting back and so I need to mail the scarfs off early. Thanks every one
  • Navybrightsmile

    Hi,
I was very happy to see that this group was here! I was wondering how the ship of the month gets chosen?
  • Navybrightsmile

It's really great that you started this for them!!! Is 50 blankets the normal number that you send out? Sorry I have so many questions.
  • Navybrightsmile

I am a senior in High School (thank goodness) I live up in Big Bear. I'm here for my boyfriend, at the moment he is in boot camp. His PIR is February 26th, cross your fingers that all goes well. I started knitting in fifth grade. I just finished a blanket for my mom. I am currently working on one for this group. It's one that is made out of scarves instead of squares. It's easier to transport around then just one big blanket. I hope it turns out well! Hope all is well with everyone. And thank you for answering all of my questions!
  • gapeach4241965(Alex's Mom)11/119

This is such a great thing. My son is currently at BC, Ship 11, Div 119. I don't know how to knit or crochet; but my mom can do both and she has even made our children the no sew fleece blankets for my children and granddaughter. I am going to have her teach me how to do these so that I can participate, with her help. I'll admit I am not at all good at sewing and could only crochet a chain when I was younger; but I look forward to this challenge. What a great thing!!!
  • abie

Hi, I am a Navy grandmother and I am just fininshing a knitted coat for myself. then I saw this on the navy4moms. Called my daughter, whose son is in ship11, division 115 and she said rhias siteisopen to all family members. I am hoping there are more grandmothers for me to connect with. Anyway, I saw the jumbo kneedle patern. I like circular needles and simple stitching. Any ideas? Sign me Cameron's grandmother, Abie
  • Navybrightsmile

    Hi Brittney,
My names Chelsey. Congradulations on joining. I think knitting is easier but I never really tried to crochet. I've always been a knitter if you want any ideas let me know! :)
  • Navybrightsmile

The only bummer is not having enough yarn!!!! Brittney stay strong girly! It'll all be okay! What is his rating?
  • Navybrightsmile

Also Brittney if you just do the Knit Stitch you can make scarves and sew those together. They can be different widths as long as they are all the same length. Good luck!!
  • Navy for Moms Admin

Hi Moms! Just wanted to stop by to say hello and see how everyone is doing? I am also a knitter, but I stick to mostly scarfs and dishcloths!

    Hi
What is the ship of the Month for March?
  • Anita B. (Josh's Mom)

Hi ProudMom...I'm another proud mom! My son was transferred to Great Lakes as an instructor for A school in November. He had been on a ship for about 4 years. I just love to read about all the afghans being made and as soon as I can sort out my yarn I'm going to get one made also.
  • Navybrightsmile

    Hey Terri,
You said a while ago that you made wash cloths with an anchor on it. I was wondering if you have the pattern still and if you do, would you mind sending it?
Brittney why can you not join a branch?
  • Navybrightsmile

    Oh Brittney I'm so sorry!
  • mfavored

I am new to the group I was so excited to come across this group My son is in boot camp right now so this is a perfect way to keep myself busy I picked my old hobby up again but now its for a good cause I had forgotten how much of a stress reliever crocheting can really be Now that I have started its hard to stop Right after I joined I got strarted on my 1st blanket I have had a lot of fun shopping for yarn and I am trying to see who else I can get involved. Great idea ladies
  • mfavored

Hello ladies Im sorry its been so long since I have been on the site That doesnt mean that I have stopped crocheting though LOL I am enjoying it so much once again. Yes I have finally started receiving letters from my son and I have even received two phone calls from him Im so happy happy happy I also am trying to recruit others who have the same interest and they think that it is a great idea ladies I have spoken also to the ladies in my mother in law s church My question is should I give them the address and let them send the blankets themselves or should I let them give it to me and then I mail it.
  • Theblackdot

I wondered, is the giving and receiving of blankets of equal size, or does that really matter?
  • lauren

  • Kaye S.

Hi, folks! I was a member quite a while ago, but had to drop out for several reasons (nothing bad). Looks like ya'll are at a crossroads...

I have knit a few watchcaps for my sailor, who serves on a submarine. He says the sleeping compartments are cold and of course, he has very little hair! He also wears them around the boat whenever he feels like it. He's given a couple to friends, too.

According to his command, they must be black, 100% wool, plain stockinette (no ribbing), and the brim should be able to turn up once. I have a very east pattern which is knit in the round. I can get 2 caps from one ball of Paton's Classic Wool. Don't know if this would interest anyone, but I'm happy to share the pattern with anyone who'd like to have it. I can post it here in a .PDF file. Hugs, k.
  • Kaye S.

(Oops! Meant to say, "I have a very EASY pattern...")
  • Kaye S.

I usually get my wool at JoAnn, with the coupons... I'll do some price checking and see what "deals" I can find.
  • Kaye S.

I put the pattern in a new discussion above in the forum. It's in .PDF format. Let me know if you find any boo-boos in the instructions!
  • NitaSewBee

Junie, I believe as a group, we are not sending any blankets out to the sailors due to the cost of postage. But we are  encourage to send them out  individually if we like. The size  of the blanket should be about   the size of a twin bed, or you can make it throw size. I think you will find the sizes  in the discussion area, just click on " view all" and the post should be there.. As for the lady  who wants to send one to her son, I guess whatever  size she wants. Twin size , no bigger than that though. I hope this helps.
  • NitaSewBee

Hi Junie,  yep,  its there, its the 5th discussion down after clicking  "view all."

another suggestion, if you want you can even adopt a sailor in Molly's A Sailor group.. There is  usually alot of  guys and gals who don't get any packages, and would love to have some.  or  there might be a group in your area that sends blankets out. Perhaps a VFW post. I know you have alot of love tucked inside and anyone who  gets  some of that love will be so lucky, Good luck.

Help-I am trying to knit a baby sweater and I think instructions are incomplete-I have contacted the books website-I did set up pattern and being told to repeat it 12 times.  Problem it has increases in it so that I can later divide-it is not telling me how to knit with the increases.  At some point will have to divide for left front-right front and back.  I would just knit the increases in back but after looking I need some from fronts too

  • NitaSewBee

I am working on a piece using  hearthstone  yarn. Speaking of yarn, I went to a  renaissance faire. They had some knitting needles  made from oak, crochet hooks too. scarfs and shawls made from  different kinds of yarn.. really nice. Next year doing to get me some hooks and maybe some needles, don't need...just want..they are so smooth,, I stood there playing with the yarn and the  hooks, actually did a few rows. well hope to see some action in here
  • NitaSewBee
