LadyHamilton, My son is signed up to run that race. I read the story. How awful. He said they got the whole buddy system talk and were informed of this incident. I think it's great that they are doing the race for it.

Haven't been on here in a while because my mother has been in the hospital.  She is home now and hopefully will be on the road to recovery.  

My son's FB status today was "Ummm, may be in Pensacola for another year" Then in one of the comments he stated that they want him to continue with more schooling.  He graduated from A school for CTT on Fri. Sept. 23, classed up for Shipboard Ops the following Monday, on Sept. 25 and has keeping above a 95% average in that.  What could they possibly be talking about now?  There were 20 kids in his CTT class and he was about 15th, so not anywhere near the top of the class.  He is soooo over Pensacola right now and just wants to get on with his career.  He was originally set for AE after BC, but shouldn't have been put in that so he was re-classed in April.  He has now been in Pensacola since his Dec. 17 BC graduation.   Does anyone know what this could be about?  He is a 4 year CTT.  

Craig talked about this a few pages back.  Are they asking him to sign up for additional 2 years?  They must be really short on 6 year CTT.  Seems like they are asking everyone. I beleive 95% is honors so he is doing well.

My son gets done with a school in 3 weeks and was told he has to wait until march for c school he is a 6 year Ctt.

Cinder- Wow that is a long wait. My son only has 2 more weeks until his c school starts. But he is ctm. He graduated a school on sept 16th. So he only had a 6 week wait.

It doesn't make sense. Maybe that's why they are recruiting some four year Ctt to six years.

Betsy - It doesn't sound like he's a 4yo CTT, he sounds like a 6yo.  I wouldn't say a thing, and let them put him through the school.  Hopefully they won't catch on and he will get all that schooling for free (ie not having to do 6yo).

 

Secondly, most sailors at Corry wish they could leave and "begin their careers".  They will soon understand that the best ship in the Navy is no better than the worst shore duty.  By this, I'm saying, he will soon realize that Corry isn't that bad, in fact it's kind of cool.  

So, just remember when he writes you from his ship and says "We've have been deployed now for 106 days, and it sucks".  You will say, "but remember, there is worst places in the world, like shore duty at Corry Station".  

He'll cuss you at 1st, but then he will realize that the "grass isn't always greener".  This will always be in the back of his head when he needs to decide if he wants to extend duty somewhere.  It did for me....

Mine was "I can be at a remote shore duty in Scotland, or I can be on a ship".  I'll take the remote duty for 1 more year....

All graduated and here with us for 20+days in Daytona Beach.  Will fly out to Japan on 11/12.  So happy to have him with us in our new home state!  He loves it here.  So much better than Conover, NC.  Right on the ocean.  He's loving every minute of it so far.  Good luck to everyone else who has a son/daughter graduating from Corry Station in the future!

Pamela - I'm not sure what state you sailor joined in, but if it was in a state that you have to pay taxes, then if he was smart he'd change his "State of Residence".  He'll save a boatload of money on not paying tax.

Craig- but don't they have to live in that state for at least 6 mo's before they can claim residence?

 

He can't reap the benefits for certain items such as in-state tuition, or other items, but he can immediately change it to Florida if he's changing his residence.  

I know this subject pretty well, since I recommend all that live in a state that taxes a military member whether they live there on not to change it.  In Colorado where I'm from, they tax the crap out of military members.  So I changed my residence to Florida when I went to "A" school.  It was one of the best things I did.

My son changed his and he gets about 80 more each check.

That's good.  Did he use the "will" rule, or did he do something else?

 

I tell you, nothing ticks me off more than some states charging the military for taxes when they don't even live there to reap the benefits.  ie like the roads, the street lights, the parks....  Let those that live in those states pay the taxes....

Thanks Craig!  He joined in NC.  But, we moved down to FL in June.  He also was in school in Pensacola.  Will look into making that will out.

Since we had moved to Florida also he used our address. And he got his drivers license and registered to vote when he got his drivers license. He didn't have the license before. He had decided he didn't need one before. But once he was at a school decided he needed one so he could use one of the cars.

Pamela - It's easier to use the drivers license thing.  But the will is guaranteed thing.  It's written in to the offical Navy form.  So, I'd do both, it makes it sooo much easier.  Get the license and will, and have him go to PSD and let them change his state of residence.  It will free up about $1K per year.  

Just remember, he can't tell PSD he's doing it to save on taxes, all he needs to do is tell them he's wants to change his "State of Residence" and have him submit the form.  He doesn't need to tell them the real reason why.  He just needs to say the basics.  

For everyone:

Like I've said, this is only for those states that make their sailors pay tax.  If your state doesn't charge tax, why change it?  

 

thanks, Craig.  He even said that they must think he is 6 year.  I don't know if he told them he is only 4 year, yet.  But I'll tell him that what they don't know, won't hurt him, but sounds like it will help.  :)

Question, my son graduates on Nov 10th and has 14 days leave. Ok good right? Here's the bad part, the end of leave/due to report is Thanksgiving day. What happens as I know most people will be gone for the weekend? Would he most likely report Fri,sat or sunday? Just when I thought he be home for the holiday :(.

Thanks but he told me yesterday he has orders in his hand. 3days travel + leave gets him to his duty station on Thanksgiving. He's driving too. Pensacola to home is about 1400 miles. Then home to duty station is about 350 miles.

CTmomof3 - It really depends on how he wants to do his leave.  Everyone knows that it will be a 4 day weekend, so some want to check in on Wednesday night, then go back home for the long weekend. Thus saving their leave. 

Others rather just take the leave and not check in until Monday.  

If he want to extend his leave out, he needs tell his PSD that he wants his Report, no Later Than (RLT) date till 28 Nov.  It's is extremely easy to extend it out.   Just check with the PSD and they will either approve it or deny it....  To me, It's easier to extend it out, then if he decides that he doesn't want to take that much leave, then check in early.  

Craig, he told me yesterday that he's put in for...all...his leave so there for he said he can't extend.  He only has a total of 15 days this year.  So, being a holiday weekend and knowing that driving Wed or Sunday will be horrible (last year it took his dad 15hrs to go from Conn to DC on that Sunday) we're trying to figure our the best option.   Hmm, here's a question..He has to drive right by FT Meade on the way home.  Say he chose to report on Monday the 14th. and leave Wed morning would will he  be on...leave or liberty Thanksgiving weekend?  Sorry to sound dumb but I don't know how the Navy counts days off.

Clockard ..No he doesn't have a sponsor.  Said the person that did his orders "wasn't a nice person" and didn't tell him anything.

I find that strange that they won't let him go in the hole on a PSC transfer.  I have rarely heard that happen.  You need for him to check with PSD again.  Make sure they understand he will be there for 2 or 3 years....

 

If he's going right by Ft Meade, then I would check in Wednesday...  then take the long weekend.  His leave will have stopped.  If he checked in on Monday, then they could put him on a watchbill, but that would rarely happen since he's would be holding company.  

What is his exact date he departs Corry?  He doesn't want to check in too early since he will lose his travel time....   

He graduates the 10th and said he's leaving that day.  Not sure if he...has to leave that day...or he's just wants out of there so why hang around.

Maybe they would let him go in the hole but being new at this I'm sure he doesn't know what/should to ask for.

Ok, I have the next question.  My son finishes his shipboard ops on Nov. 11 and has been told that there are 5 CTT classes ahead of his awaiting their Orders.  What are the odds that he can plan on taking leave for Thanksgiving and flying home for a few days?  I'm afraid that if he pays for a ticket home now, he might get stuck for the cost if they do issue Orders before then.  Refundable tickets are just too far out of his price range and SW doesn't fly out of Pensacola, so he can't change the date if he needs too .  :(

Urgent question. When going from A school to your duty station, If you're driving I assume the Navy gives you travel time. So if leave is being taken too does that time start after the allotted " travel" time? My son said he was taking 14days leave and I thought he had said he had 3 travel days. Graduation is the 10th. So if I count right his leave time would be the 13th-26th. However, the person at corry told him his leave ends on thanksgiving day. What's the travel leave policy?

I guessing you're saying is the travel on the front end or the back end.  Who cares?  As long as he gets his travel time is all that matters.  He gets 1 day per 350 miles traveled.  One additional day is allowed for any distance in excess of multiples of 350 miles if the excess is 51 miles or more.  He will also get per-diem too....

Authorities: Fort Gordon soldier fatally shot Richmond County deputy, killed himself

 

The man who fatally shot a Richmond County sheriff's deputy early this morning has been identified as a soldier stationed at Fort Gordon, Sheriff Ronnie Strength said during a news conference at 9 a.m.
Deputy James D. Paugh, 47, was on his way home after being on duty and stopped when he saw a suspicious car on the side of the Bobby Jones Expressway at Gordon Highway a little after 1 a.m. He pulled over to check on it and was shot several times, Strength said.
Christopher Michael  Hodges, 26, shot Paugh with an M4 semiautomatic rifle. Evidence gathered at the scene indicate that 35 rounds were fired by the Hodges. Before Paugh arrived, Hodges had been seen  firing at passing vehicles.

ATLANTA — The girlfriend of an Army National Guard soldier who fatally shot a sheriff's deputy and himself told investigators the gunman "definitely had a drinking problem" and grabbed an assault rifle from his trunk after she made him pull over while he was driving drunk, a Georgia sheriff said Monday.

"She said he had been drinking and he was drunk and that when he gets drunk, he gets violent," Richmond County Sheriff Ronald Strength said. "Why shoot a law enforcement officer? We don't have that answer."

Spc. Christopher Michael Hodges, 26, was randomly firing an assault rifle into traffic from behind his car on the side of an Augusta highway at about 1 a.m. Sunday when Deputy James Paugh pulled over and was shot — apparently not realizing at first that Hodges posed a threat, authorities said.

Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard but had been training at Fort Gordon in Augusta for six months. Strength said Hodges' girlfriend told police that they had gotten into an argument in the car after he had gotten drunk at a friend's house.

"She said he definitely had a drinking problem," the sheriff said.

Hodges pulled off the highway and into the grass after "she got mad and said, 'Let me out. I want to go home,'" Strength said. "That's when he got out and got the rifle out of the car and started shooting."

The sheriff said Hodges didn't shoot at the woman, whose name wasn't released, but seemed to be randomly firing as he emptied one magazine on the M4 rifle and loaded another. Investigators found at least 40 shell casings, though no motorists reported being hit, Strength said. He said authorities were working to trace the gun, and Fort Gordon officials had determined it didn't come from the Army post.

Meanwhile investigators were awaiting autopsy results likely ready on Tuesday that are expected to include tests for drugs and alcohol in Hodges' blood.

And investigators were still trying to fill in the details of Hodges' military service for clues to what led to his outburst. Strength said authorities had determined the citizen-soldier had served in Iraq, but he wasn't sure of the timeline. He also cautioned that, while investigators are interested in whether Hodges suffered from any service-related mental problems, "we're not psychiatrists or psychologists."

"There are many things that will never be answered," Strength said.

The military said Hodges had served on active duty and later in the National Guard at least since 2005, when he was stationed at Fort Stewart with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. His four years based at the southeast Georgia post included a yearlong deployment to Iraq from 2007 to 2008.

According to the Tennessee National Guard, Hodges joined its ranks in February after he'd spent about two years in the Georgia Guard.

"This is a time of deep sorrow for all involved and in the midst of this tragedy our thoughts are first and foremost with the families," Major Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee's adjutant general, said in a statement Monday. He said the military is working with civilian authorities to figure out what happened.

Neither Tennessee National Guard nor Fort Gordon officials have said what sort of training Hodges was doing at the post in Augusta. He belonged to the 1st Battalion,107th Aviation Regiment based in Smyrna, Tenn., which deployed to Afghanistan in June while Hodges was training at Fort Gordon.

Paugh was one of Richmond County's veteran deputies, having served for 17 years. Strength said the slain deputy was off-duty but still wearing his uniform when he was shot.

He said Paugh, 47, was riding his motorcycle home after spending the evening on patrol outside Augusta's fall fair. Authorities believe the deputy spotted Hodges' car beside the highway and stopped check.

Investigators found Paugh's motorcycle lying on its side in the grass, leading them to believe Hodges opened fire on the deputy before he could put down his kickstand. Evidence shows Paugh fired two shots from his service handgun, but he missed Hodges.

His funeral was planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Augusta.

"We're set up for more than 1,000," said sheriff's Capt. Scott Gay. "We know that people are coming from all over Georgia and from throughout the United States."

Gay said his department has been flooded with emails and notes from well-wishers.

One of them, from a doctor in Ohio, said the deputy "is a true hero" and expressed hope that his family finds some comfort.

"I hope the fact that he is being honored by so many brings them some comfort in this time of loss," the note stated. "May they feel comfort and love from across the nation."

 

Thanks Craig. It's 1,019 miles from Corry to ft Meade. My son said the person at corry is less than helpful trying to schedule leave, although sometimes he doest explain his "wants" to well. It appears from what he was given was a...total..of 14days. Instead of 17...3 travel and 14 leave.

On the good part, now he will have 11 days leave, and 3 days travel.  More to use somewhere else (ie Christmas)....

who would be the people to talk to about help with a name change for my sailor. he had his last name changed before he went into the navy but after his sighn up delayed entry paperwork was done, recruiter was given paperwork about the name change and recruiter said they would deal with it in boot camp but they didnt every time it was broughst to their attention he kept getting either yelled at or put off, now he is at A school there in pensicola still trying who can he go to so that it will actually be taken care off

PSD Pensacola is located in Bldg. 680 (next to the main gas station adjacent to the NEX Aviation Plaza and the Naval Aviation Chapel). PSD Pensacola can be reached by telephone at 452-3617.

hotrod - He needs to go the base legal.  They in turn will advise him if it is legally binding, if so, then they (legal) should call PSD on your sons behalf.  Your son just needs to ask legal for assistance with PSD and/or write a memo.  

He shouldn't just go to PSD himself, because they will just give the run-around.  Let legal handle everything.

thankyou all for the help this has been a constant worry for us both i will pass on the info.  we are worried that through no fault of his own he will get into trouble for it not eing changed over yet
