When you don't have a passport
My son is headed to Sasebo tomorrow. He can't check in online without a passport. He has his military ID and his orders. United told him that those should work in lieu of a passport; presented in person at ticketing counter at the airport tomorrow morning.
Anyone have insight re the no passport situation?

Orders and the military ID work just fine at the airport. Not being able to check in online is frustrating, but he will be fine.
He seriously should consider getting a civilian passport, for leisure travel and in case of emergencies when he doesn't want to wait for military transport. You should have a passport too, for much the same reasons.
