Death in the family

My mother just passed away today, and of course I have to let our sailor know. I am worried though because I just don’t want to derail my sailor in A school. I notified the Red Cross and am waiting to hear back from my sailor. Has anyone had experience with this? We were thinking it might be better if we went to see our sailor instead of them flying to us, then have the memorial when our sailor is done with school in about a month. Words of wisdom would be helpful.

Worldtravel4ever - So sorry for the loss of your mother and your sailor's grandmother.  My sailor leaves for Corpsman school after PIR this Friday.  Wish I knew the answer to your questions but believe calling the Red Cross was the correct protocol.

Worldtravel4ever - I am so sorry for the loss of your mother.  Notifying the Red Cross was the proper step to take.  They will meet with your son and allow him time to call you.  Then you can figure out from there what the next step is.  They may or may not let him have leave - it will depend on his command.  When my step dad passed (he had been in my sons lives since they were born so he was their grandpa) we were able to wait and have the memorial (and it was a military funeral) until after B was finished with his schooling in NY.  He passed in December (2015) and we had the memorial in February and B was able to be there in his dress uniform and present the flag to my mom.  It was very moving.  (This is B in the background receiving the flag.)  I hope that you are able to work everything out and that your sailor can be there for you.  Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss.  Let us know how things work out.

I have one more question for all of you. My sailor told me he would have leave after A school. Do any of you know how soon after graduation leave begins?
