"Stevesmom(Donna)- heard Chris is now "kennel support" & very happy about it! Wonder if his room got moved because of that? Missed his call today while I was teaching, darned school is like a bunker - no signal inside. I did get his voice mail saying things were busy. Days he'll call tomorrow, no nb for me so far! Got 5th Fleet on FB & saw thT "something big" was in port, no wonder they're busy.
All our hearts beat with yours, all our arms ache with yours, all our eyes take in our children's countenance for memory & cry with yours. We know your pain, yet also your strengths. Remember, you have Sisters here, if & when needed. <3
I am new to this group and wondering if someone can help me decide if this is the place for me to find out more info. Without saying the wrong thing, we know my son will be sent to Bahrain end of June, but apparently he will not be with the Navy, but instead Marine base. Does anyone in this group have experience with this? Are all of your sons/daughters the same or do I just not understand.
We are hoping he can come home for a visit first, but leave has not been approved.
Help: He has a car in Virginia. We are thinking he will have to drive home to store as the Navy is telling him they will not store, but he could rent something. Does anyone have hints for me on this. I am not sure if we should try to fly out there to drive home ourselves. I really don't do well with unanswered questions.
Those goodbyes are awful. Alex & I were messes, pulled off on the roadside & sobbed. Chris even cried openly, very rare. Your son will sound awful on the first call, trip is brutal, he'll sound better on the 2nd. He'll have time to aclimatize. & learn customs of the base & area. BTW your boss hasn't been pregnant or been a Mom so he's got no clue. In true "southern terms"; "Bless his heart, for being a dolt about your day off. Good grief! Hang in there sister.
Christine and all...thank you for the warm welcome to this group. Since his graduation, Florida and now Virginia, we have not been too worried. I am now very nervous about the Bahrain deployment (son's first).
Christine, I don't think we are going to make it to say good-bye to our son when he leaves for Bahrain, but if I would, I would be crying too! However we just found out today he will be able to come home in June - before leaving. We struggle with the minimal information he gives us. I think he is trying so hard to be independent.
I appreciate the update about the POA. Should I try to get while he is home? Others have told me that the military will handle before he leaves, but I don't know how I will get that information from him. Maybe a self-addressed envelope and he can just drop in the mail once completed?
found out today that if my husband gets stationed in the states for his next duty assignment, he will have to be on a ship, do mobile security, or air squadron. Can anything else go wrong?! Looks like I will be moving to Italy possibly in the next couple years..
So my husband graduated A School and is at his first duty stationed on an unaccompanied tour for 2 years in Bahrain, most people are telling me his tour should only be 1 year. We got married AFTER he got his orders, is there anyway he can change this to 1 year instead of 2?
To all/anyone who has or has had a son/daughter stationed in Bahrain. My son is 33, married with 2 children under age 5. He is in the USCG and deploying to Bahrain within the next 2 weeks. Quesions for anyone: 1. Would it be better to bring Bahrainian Dinar from the states or get it over there once he arrives? 2. Will he need a converter for his plug in items such as phone charger, computer, etc.? I bought him one here but he said he has limited space/weight to carry with him and doesn't want to add even the slightest bit over - I could always mail it to him. 3. When sending items thru the APO or FPO - can I send items like coffee, peanut butter, etc. - another words things he likes from the states that won't go bad in the time it takes to get to him.
Chris also did his $ exchange, power issues & most purchases on base. Lie the other ladies I send pkgs frequently. Use the "if it fits/ships" boxes. You can order (free) "Military Care" box sets at; 1-800-610-8734. It will include; various size boxes & customs forms with sleeves. They're great! Welcome aboard.
Congrats to the new E4!!!!!
Chris's year annivsary isn't till mid June. Don't know when he'll get leave. : P bleah! So happy for everyone who's had, is having & looking forward to a homecoming.
Congrats again to the new "POs"! So hard to accomplish now adays. Awesome!
Kathy- Thanks for the video! My favorite things (after Chris & Al) are helos & Dragons! You must be so proud of your daughter, cruddy there wasn't a pic of her.
Nice "it" is gone, & things are back to the normal fun & games on the "B"
It'll be a year for Chris in mid June, am still awaiting a "with camel" picture!!
Guess being like "Gary Cooper" (a man of few words) is a good thing considering the fb pgs. for the afire mentioned ships. Still drives me
Bonkers, being the nosie thing I am!!!!
You go girls! Never enough NAVY stuff or photos! Bring 'em on! My Alex (husband) teases that I live vicariously through you all. I say, "nah, the sharing is the thing I appreciate!"
I have a question about mail....How long does it take for the mail to get there from the states? I have sent a letter and a box to my son about 2 weeks ago and he still has not gotten them.
Donna- getting K9 training is what he wanted last time we spoke. He was really excited about being assigned to Kennel Support. You know how "Gary Cooper" he is, haven't spoken to him since prior to Mom's Day. Alex has had a couple short calls, but nothing for me. Guess I'm not in the loop of late, : (
So much news today!!
Check militaryfares.com for tickets, (Marine friend refered)
Congrats on the "crow"!
Congrats to the grad . Yea! For photos thereof!
Hooyah for Kings Bay!
OK, what did I forget??!!
Banner website is: buildadesign.com/troops.
I ordered one for when/if Chris gets to come home.
BTW: I called the banner folks to ck to see if I could chg my delivery date. Turns out it was completed & they'd already put it on the FEDX truck at no additional chg. Told me to just tell him " thanks for his service"! So cool.
American Airlines is running around $1,200 round trip. Yipes! Don't know if he checked militaryfares.com I forgot to ask when we Heard from Chris last night! Seventeen days : ) Can't stop grinning.
My son, DC1 USCG, just went to Bahrain for a year, he arrived on June 15th. We have been using SKYPE for our "visits" with him. He said the plane ride over was torture; food horrible on plane. He is having a rough time with the time change - we catch him on SKYPE at about 9pm our time/4am Bahrain time. He got to Bahrain and is being put up in a hotel until the other DC1 leaves and he moves into an apartment - about 2 more weeks he said. So far he said food at grocery store is very expensive, heat is really bad, sand everywhere as are ants. This is just his first week! My heart goes out to him and he is missing his wife and two babies. I hope this year goes by fast and that things get better for him.
Eljoneil - Welcome, my MA son (Chris) just celebrated his one year there. The first week is awful for them. Has he tried eating on base? There is no mess, but there is a food court of sorts! He can also pick up things at the NEX. The heat is bad right now, will he get desert grade clothing issued? That helps. Keep contact, things will get better. Time change levels out. Best cell phones are at the NEX. You'll find this bunch of ladies very helpful, good listeners & commiserators. Again, welcome.
Too, too cute. Dogs & human family, how much better can it be? Or like our kids say, "It's all good"!!!!
Just 14 more days till Chris gets home, wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Been shampooing carpet, freshening up bed clothes. Just trying to keep busy so times flies!
Found out yesterday that the downstairs A/C is taking it's final steps into oblivion. We've, in 11 yrs in NC house, now changed out every appliance. Getting hard to say, " IAG"!
Eight days to go!
New downstairs A/C chillin' _/ check
(hoping for lots of sub jobs this coming school year to pay for it!)
Korbel in to chill _/ check
Some minor tweaks to the house _/ check
Keeping busy so time flies _/ check
Scan Bahrain N4Ms _/ check
Chris's ticket was $1,200. For his ride to NC
Thanks for the well wishes! Time is fleeting (no pun), hope it doesn't pass this quick while he's home, but alas, I know it will....
Best to all, chriscwick <3
Kathy, B sure 2 give them a need by date. Although the guy I spoke to when I needed it sooner than you'd anticipated. NOTE: he also indicated that they work on military stuff quicker so they get it out soonest. Nice folks! I've a survey to complete, it will be a glowing endorsement from me. Already put my Command Hooks in the box ready for next Thursday. 7 days...... Back to my "time flying duties"!!!!
I, too, steal from FaceBook. His page & from mutual FB friends. I've even sunk low enough to check his FB friends pages. When Chris was home between MA training & Bahrain the 3 of us went to Portrait Innovations & had photos taken! On the "QT", Alex has similar plans for pics when Chris gets home. Wonder if our kids would be our photogs & get shots for us? Seems I get go even lower, my bad!!!!
