Mom2aSailor - Yes my son is there now.  He has been in Bahrain since August 2010 and will be there until September 2012!  He is an MA!  Where did your daughter recruit out of...mine was out of Wilton.

  • JnRene

Hello. My son is leaving for Bahrain next month. This will be his first deployment. He just graduated C school in San Diego. Needless to say I am a complete wreck... I dont think I will calm down until I know all the details...will he stay on the ship at all times? how will we communicate? what will his address be??  He keeps saying " I dunno"   Are there any other moms of ET's here?

  • chriscwick

    Jeannie - HooYah! foryour MA3.
  • chriscwick

Welcome JnRene! This is the place for you.
  • Jane-Adam's mom

My son has been in Bahrain for 2 weeks. He is a M3 and is awaiting the others from his MESG unit. I do miss him, I think he is adjusting well. We have great skyping and phone service so far-I know when he goes out on ship it will be different. This sight and all of your great words have been most helpful in to know what to expect. Jane

  • JnRene

Thanks everyone! I believe that Jaime will live on the ship so I'm a little worried about internet service...hoping to be able to skpye. I dont think he will be able to come home before heading over there. He and his wife have been living at Pacific Beacon ( apartment on base in San Diego) and have to move into a house on Dec 7...he ships out the 15 th and with all of the stuff he has to get done plus the move....just not enough time. They have no furniture so they really have a short time to shop and set up the house. I just went there a few weeks ago but was so hoping they would be able to come home.
  • chriscwick

    Welcome ladies!
Donna - Got a request! Would you please ask Steve to ask Leo to do me a favor.
Haven't heard from "Gary Cooper" aka Chris since my birthday in mid October & he's yet to pick up his birthday cake @ the NEX or respond to his Halloween & BD pkgs! He texted that it has been a busy time for him.... GGRRRRRRR...
Anyhow, ask Steve to entreat Leo to bite old "GC" in the a__! lol
With love from a, frustrated & lonesome, NAVY Mom.
  • chriscwick

Nah, I was just venting! lol Seeing the pics of he & Cherry lets me know Leo won't be the only one to have tooth marked him!!!
He best be helping out! He gets focused...
He probably sees this inspection as possibly another step to getting his K9 school & a leash of his own.
  • chriscwick

    Donna - funny note:
Chris & I used to brush the teeth of our dog, KC, with an electric tooth brush!
Think Leo would put up with that?! lol

Wow, I go a couple of days wirout checking the page, and there are pages of new posts! :-)

Donna - Thanks for the info about Belgians, I haven't had a chance to look them up yet - now I don't have to! lol! I will definitely make sure he knows to be on the lookout for 'Tarzan! (Titanium teeth - Good Lord!)

Jill - what a beautiful story! It gives a bit of faith back that there are still some wonderful people out there... tho it does seem like being the mom/fiancé/wife of a Soldier brings it out in people, right? :-)

Leta - we absolutely do need a lady Sailor & a mom like that! LOL! (But do they need *us*?!) ;) btw - i usually catch my son on FaceBook as well. But he's also in a position still to be able to call home at least 4 nights a week. Boy am I going to miss that!

Jeannie & JnRenee - these ladies are wonderful. Its really a great group, very open & caring. Welcome!

As for Christmas... I'm blessed enough to have my son Michael be able to come home for 10 whole days! I'm so excited to see him that I cry when I think about it, how silly is that?! If I'm like this now, after seeing him just back in September for 1.5 days, what am I going to do when i can only see him like once a year? *sniff*

Anyway.... I hope you ladies all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. God Bless you all!
  • chriscwick

    Yup!
  • chriscwick

Thanks Donna. The boys should get a laugh off naggie, needy, me!
When Chris was home he mentioned that one of his goals was to get Leo to accept him! Makes me happy to know our guys are friends.
  • chriscwick

Watching the Macy's parade, sipping coffee with my husband, Alex. Beautiful (41*) clear day in north central NC. My 59th year of never cooking a turkey! Since no family nearby we'll hold with our NC tradition & dine with friends.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone, near & far, wet & dry, bi-ped & quadra-ped!!

K9 Mom's - I picked up "Dogs of War" (soft cover) for Chris's Xmas at BN. It may be a used book (lol) when he gets it, read a bit before purchasing, but am compelled to read more!!!!
  • chriscwick

Fingers & toes all crossed for phone calls!!
  • chriscwick

No call. Seems I don't know anything anymore. Didn't know about a move. Hope it's on base, but fear it's not.

Glad K9 had a lovely home cooked meal. Higher ups must be great folks.
  • chriscwick

Donna - don't worry about the "call home". He would if he wanted to.
  • Jane-Adam's mom

just spoke with my sailor--they had a good Thanksgiving meal-about 40 celebrated.

  • chriscwick

    Got a text!
  • chriscwick

    Yea Donna!

JillH - Wonder if my Chris is nearby?! He's in a 2 bd bath flat. Have no intel on the W/D. No call yet, but then he did say, "after he got his stuff put away." LOL, we may never get a call... His housekeeping skills ain't the greatest. One reason he needs routine inspections!
  • chriscwick

Hope we hear from "Gary Cooper" soon!

    Will mail Christmas out Monday.

Have been picking up some house warming goodies for a special box. You know, measuring things, multi tool & kitchen towels.

Been reading "Dogs of War". Neat book. After reading it, I want to send it & ask the whole kennel to sign it. I put a copy for Chris in his Xmas box.

It says if a MWD has a double letter at the start of it's name it's from the Lackland breeding program. Neat, huh?!
  • chriscwick

I know the "if it fits-ships" boxes are 74#!

Still no call, how much stuff does my kid have to put away...
    LOL!
  • chriscwick

Welcome Nancy! If your son's headed to Bahrain, this is the perfect group for you. It's been a life saver for me. If we don't know something, we'll hunt till we do know it.

We are a diverse group. Take a wander through older posts & stay current with us. There's usually something buzzing! Rant, rave, laugh, cry, share a story, post a pic & ask away!

My son is MA3 Kennel Support & 4 months into his 2nd year on Bahrain. He lives off base as of last week. Funny, we refer to him sometimes as "Gary Cooper" at times as he isn't the most communicative, (strong, silent type) and my maiden name is Cooper. One more. On connect, my step gramma was named "Nancy"!

    Again, welcome aboard & fair winds, following seas! -@-|--}
  • chriscwick

Thx Tammy! We never know with him. He gets focused and...
    He's well & happy!
  • Mary...Brittsmom

    Hello Ladies;

So glad I found this page :) My daughter will be going to Bahrain after the first of the year. She is very excited about this, it was her first choice. Wondering a few things, are ther barracks on the base and how do you all communicate with your sailors?

  • Nancy Cooper's Mom

Hi!  I am so GRATEFUL to have found this site!!  I found out quickly the general public-- (friends included) just want to hear that they have people out there in uniform- but it seems they really don't want to talk about all that goes into it!  I find they just say great!  How proud you must be, then quickly change the subject to shopping, television ......

I am proud of my son.  I know he is cut to stand so strong under our Flag and Defend it!  He is my BABY though, the youngest of 4 in 5 years.  So we miss him tremendously.  So thank you all for your kind words of welcome!  I felt adrift for a few weeks here!  And just stumbled upon this site by accident!  Fondly, Nancy

  • chriscwick

The sailors usually pick up a prepaid type cell phone at the NEX. Some also text, email & Skype.

Barracks are on base. Many (mine) E4s have flats off base. There is no formal mess, but a food court of sorts. On base they'll have a fridge & microwave in the room. Other appliances are not allowed...but...
  • Jane-Adam's mom

Hello everyone and welcome new moms! My son is finishing his 3rd week in Bahrain. He has been waiting on his unit and will be on a small ship patroling the gulf-30 days out, 1 week on base. Right now we facebook, Skype and talk frequenly, so we are lucky, but that will soon be less frequent. It seems expensive there for them to eat off base, and he is adjusting well. I think we are all proud of them, worry about them and constantly pray for their safety!!. I am so happy to have you all to keep on top of things with all our sailors!!

  • Nancy Cooper's Mom

Hi, I am going out to get some Christmas presents for my son, I understand they only wear civilian clothing off bases. What is the weather like January to March? What weather weight does he need?
  • chriscwick

    Ummmm, right now it's 57• & clear.
  • Mom2aSailor

    mary,

My daughter will be reporting to Bahrain at the end of Dec.  :)  I am sure they will get to know each other, as I am sure the female population isn't that large there! :)

  • Mary...Brittsmom

Thanks ladies, I am still a little confused on the phone situation, do they buy international phone cards? My daughter said something about an I phone or an I thouch so she can download an ap for free texting.

  • chriscwick

Leta! Yikes! on that postage, but I'll bet Daniel will be thrilled with his goodies!

Loved the "warm" comment. Guess anything under 100+ is considered cool!!!

Just got Chris's out today. Although I still have the "flat warming" box to assemble & send. Got him dish towels, salt/peppers, spoonulas, measuring cups/spoons, hot pads & the like. Am not liking him off base and alone, but don't have any say about it.
  • Mary...Brittsmom

I use the flat rate boxes at the post office "if it fits, it ships". Then I use the gallon ziplocs and squeeze the air out. You would not believe the amount of things I fit into one of those boxes.

  • chriscwick

I got out for $26 & change! (2 pkgs & 1 tube) That's until I find something I just have to send him!
  • Miss Suzanne

    Chriswick - "spoonulas"?? Whaaa? :-)

Leta - good Lord, that's a lot of money! O.o But, as chriswick said, I'm sure Daniel will be thrilled to receive them! Did you use the flat rate Military packs, just out of curiousity?
  • Miss Suzanne

By the way: only *15* more days til Michael comes home for a 10 day leave! :D
  • chriscwick

Miss Suzanne - count down begins!!!!!!!

"spoonulas" are usually a silicone (can stand high temp cooking) combination of a spatula & spoon! Very handy to have.
  • Nancy Cooper's Mom

What kind of food can you send? how long does it take to get there? My son won't be there until after the first of the year- so he can take his Christmas gifts with him. I am wondering about food though? What stays fresh long enough?
  • Nancy Cooper's Mom

How is their food there on Base? Do they have a on Base PX or NEX to buy food?
  • Miss Suzanne

chriswick, sounds like I need to get me one of those "spoonulas" lol! And the countdown began a couple of weeks ago - I'm so excited to see him, my heart almost aches, does that make sense?!

Leta - Michael will be here on the 16th, & he'll leave the night of the 26th.... so yeah, that's a great reason to start celebrating Christmas early! ;)
And knowing how much you spent to make sure he gets some extra comforts he wouldn't have otherwise is a good way for Daniel to appreciate what you do all the more. Bless their hearts, but sometimes kids - no matter how old - need to know how much effort we go to for them!
  • chriscwick

The kids all keep track of what's coming into port. If it's big or a bunch the MEX is hit hard. Looks like a grocery just prior to a hurricane or snow storm. Desmation city, shelves empty, food services with long lines. Chris keeps emergency rations, protein drinks, energy bars handy. We got him a Melita one cup drip coffee cup (grocery store or BB&B) so when his schedule is crazy he can get his fix!
  • chriscwick

We know that your heart doesn't almost aches. It downright pounds in anticipation!
Chris once said that when someone would get a package everyone shared in the opening thereof. They were teasing him about a box he'd gotten. It was his Xmas tree we sent him last year. Snarky lil crud that he is, he grabbed it & ran down the hall to his room giggling manically, I got mine...where's yours!!!!! They may not say it to us but they do appreciate the little, as well as, the big stuff we do.
    BTW: still no call....
  • Jane-Adam's mom

Does anyone know if they get mail if they are out on assignment for 30 days on ship? Or does it just sit in a mail room somewhere?

  • Miss Suzanne

chriswick -He sounds adorable, running down the hallway with his tree...! lol! Definitely snarky! (Love that word!)
I'll pray that he's able to call you soon, I know how hard it is waiting to hear from them.
  • chriscwick

    He's more than able : (
He just doesn't take the time.
He's focused on his new place,
his job & his furry friends!! lol
  • chriscwick

Jeannie - It might end up cheaper in the "if it fits" boxes from the USPS. That is ...if it fits!!!!

Jill - I got kitchen towels that were bleach safe (Target), just in case.
  • chriscwick

Jeanie - think of it this way...more pkgs to open!
  • chriscwick

Look for pods in the back yard or the shed, ala "Body Snatchers" from the '50's!

Mr. Picky now eats green peas....gotta check that shed....
  • CathieRenee

Thanks Kathy! I shipped out 120 Christmas stockings, 240 Christmas cards, 80 ornaments and other tree decorations to the squadron yesterday. Hopefully that tree will be a little more festive this year.
  • chriscwick

CR & K - you are awesome ladies!
