I've been reading on my phone and thinking about all of you, but never seem to get to the computer to post!
NOAM: A lot of us have been through the SERE stretch. It's scary, but it does help keep them safe. My DS went through in November in Maine( a while ago); hope yours is further south! One good thing is that they usually get some leave after they finish, so hopefully he will make it home for the holidays. Good luck to him.
Suzie: Have a wonderful winging. It will be so extra special to have the whole family there. You are blessed.
Kabar: Ditto navy wife and mom. DS is O3 now, but as O2, he was able to get Christmas leave when he drew duty on Thanksgiving. The earlier requested, the better, as once again the O2s don't get top priority.
Welcome Thetribemom! My DS is based at Atsugi also. He is on the same ship, USS George Washington, with Nancy W's DS. Our DS is in a different Squadron VFA-27, Royal Maces. You should be able to hear from your Son when they are out to sea by email, they are usually very busy and may not get back to you right away. When they are in Atsugi, communication is possible more frequently but again they stay busy! Our squadron, and the ombudsman have facebook pages and are very good at posting pictures and events. Hubby and I are flying to Japan in early December when they come back from the fall cruise. DS was able to come home for the holidays last year, but wont be able to this year. They love getting care packages, so box up all that leftover Halloween candy!
Thetribemom: Welcome to the Liberty Bells! My DS is a Hawkeye NFO coming up on the end of year 2 in Japan. Atsugi is a small joint base with the Japanese Air Force. We went over last year for Christmas and although it was relatively quiet on base, had a wonderful time.
A lot of people live off-base because housing is tight. Housing allowances are pretty generous, even with the high costs over there. Atsugi is not far from Yokohama (20 min. max on the local trains), and an additional 25-30 min. from Tokyo. The view of Mt. Fuji is incredible; you'll see it on patches, etc.
The toughest thing in communication (other than already mentioned) is the 16 hr. time difference between there and where we live in Chicago. Skype is one of God's gift to military families! While on these extended cruises, you'll have to settle for really hit or miss until they are in port. Keep sending emails, though they might not get a chance to read them for a while.
Packages are always welcome, whether on cruise or land. My DS used to get teased about all the packages he got, but the squadron know we always put in stuff to share. Surprisingly, the single biggest "hit" for passing around are used magazines. Especially with the rough weather this cruise, a lot of time is spent waiting to fly, so they love to have a pile of magazines around to read.
Japan is pretty temperate compared to Illinois, but it does get really damp and chilly. They have very little room on ship, but extra socks, sweaters, sweatshirts, etc. are appreciated. Believe me, Japanese central heat is not my idea of comfy, and my house is always set lower than most, so your LO will appreciate them on land, too.
VAW 115 is a very close-knit group and really friendly. I hope your son will have as good an experience as mine. If you have any specific questions, please ask. This is a great group and we all know what you are going through. No one understands like other military families!
TNnavymom: Have a great trip. Tokyo was not my favorite, but if you will be there for it, don't miss the hilarious charity parade when motorcyclists all dress up like Santa and go down the main shopping street. For a primarily Buddhist and Shinto country, they have an amazing array of holiday decorations and lights.
I hope that you will go to Kyoto, the old imperial capital. It is about 21/2 hr. by bullet train and will really give you a feel for old time Japan. After simply being with my son, it was definitely the high point of the trip for our whole family.
God bless all. I wish you a lovely Thanksgiving. I am trying to have some sailors from Great Lakes join us, as we have in the past, but the red tape is getting ridiculous. Seriously, do they think we are a security risk even with an active duty officer???
As Nancy said, be careful about the address. Also, we have two special Navy email addresses that seem to get through a lot faster. I only use those when he is on cruise. Be sure to get those.
The flat rate boxes are the best! No weight restrictions, so you can cram in a lot. If I hadn't used the flat rate military, the last package would have cost almost 4X as much because of the weight of the magazines. Remember that letters, etc. to the military are the same postage rate as in the US, no matter where in the world they go. You can actually have the Post Office deliver packages of 25 boxes free to your home. Go on the website and make sure you ask for the military, not the regular flat rate boxes. It is very convenient, and that way I just keep them and a stack of customs forms on hand. You will also need to fill out a form for each box.
I've never had a box take more than two and a half weeks, but I guess I've been lucky!
Thank you all so much. You have been wonderful. I will try to be on more often for your help, but I work 6 days a week so not much time to chat. Thanks agian.
GW moms: In case you haven't heard, they pulled the GW out of Hong Kong three days early to aid in relief efforts in the Philippines. Luckily, I got to talk to DS last night, but at that point they still thought they had two or three days left in port.
The heli pilots are going to be really busy ferrying relief to the smaller places and also, according to the news, bringing injured on board. At least some people should see all the peacetime good our LOs do.
I will say one thing about our ships being deployed to the Philippines, all will be working hard. I know in the past everyone that has extra civilian clothes with them will be donating them to the civilian citizens along with anything extra they have with them. God Bless them all and keep them safe.
NancyW.--Thank you for the welcome! I may be here a bit early, but I look forward to learning the ropes from all of you. My son is NROTC and will be commissioning in May 2014. He recently received his service assignment and got his #1--Naval Aviator! He is excited and I am happy for him. I figured I could be ready if i joined this group.
Welcome helenp. You will have great support from the group here. There are such experienced folk such as Nancy and Paymaster. They can answer about any question. My son just received his wings in April and the two years to get to that point was amazing.
James, great news about having the whole family. I also am blessed this year. my DS and girl will be here as well as my non-Navy son who is moving back from Japan. He and his wife will be here as well. That is the best Christmas blessing. No gift can compare with that!
We had a big windstorm last week, and this tree fell on our storage/emergency cabin. There's some damage to the roof, but the fact it's still standing shows my husband's building skills! The tree was leaning the opposite direction and downhill, which why it hadn't been cut down earlier, and was so big it took us three days to get it off. We are really lucky to have power. There are still 400 homes without electricity a week later and it's -30. Considering all the disasters other places, this is pretty minor.
Sheila, good thoughts and prayers for you. I know how difficult it must be not to see him since winging.
Kris, great you will be able to spend Christmas with your DS. My DS got engaged the weekend before Thanksgiving. Happily, they will be with us for Christmas.
Suzie, We will be keeping sunny thoughts for Meridian. I know it is really hard to plan about moving dates. Such is Navy life! Please post a picture of your patches frame.
Hubby and I made it to japan! DS met us at the airport and thankfully so, it took 4 different trains to get to the base and we never could have done it alone!
That first hug was so surreal, hard to believe we are here. Was a direct flight from Atlanta, 14 hours.
Planning on resting today, then let the fun begin. With 2 weeks we will have plenty of time with DS and site seeing!
Brrrr freezing up here in the northwest. Thought you all would enjoy this sweet picture of my Dogs on Deployment dog reunited with her Navy pilot dad after a six month deployment. Maybe one of you will recognize this fine young man? JudyM I think he probably knows your DS as they are at the same base & congrats on the engagement! Little dog could not contain her joy when she saw him, it would melt the hardest heart. All four of my kids get to come home for Christmas! I have made several trips to Boston since the 1st of Nov. to watch my youngest play soccer. She was named the New England Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Year! Couldn't be prouder of all of my kids and all of yours!
Two beautiful ladies! My DS will be moving to Whidbey after the holidays. We are in No. California so for us its wonderful to have him that close. On to the next training for him! To all you lovely Navy4moms..
Hello all! I've been following your posts; love the pics and congrats on all the good news. Life at work has been crazy. I really need to find a job whose busy season isn't Sept through Nov. :)
We managed a visit with DS and DIL at Thanksgiving. My hubby's family ranch is halfway between here and Kingsville. Had a wonderful time and DS got to relax and de-stress a bit. We will fly to CA to see daughter and her hubby for Christmas and then back home in time for DS and DIL to arrive for New Years. We are enjoying them being close (if 8 hours of drive time is close) but after Kingsville, they will likely be much farther away!
I too am very grateful for you and this place to learn, vent and support each other. I pray that this holiday season brings you joy and contact with your loved ones...may it be in person or by Skype!
Bake a ton of stuff. Took four days to get it all cooked and baked. Sent out 22 trays of goodies like this. Have just enough for the house for over the Christmas holiday.
Here we are on a beautiful sunny day - LZ, JudyM and Paymaster along with our friend Wanda helping out at the National Veterans cemetery in Dixon, CA. Helping with Wreath's Across America.
Is there anyone who can pick a Marine up from Meridian Naval Airstation on Dec 23rd and get him to the airport? He is trying to get home and I am going up on the 20th and 22nd. typical cab fare from the base to the airport is $500.00 or more (!) can you believe that! Anyway, If you live withing a comfortable driving distance let me know. I could use some help in helping these guys and gals get home for Christmas. I live down in South Alabama close to PNAS
Suzie: Congratulations! I'm glad that your DS's winging went off as planned. How very special for him and your father, too.
To all: Have a blessed holiday season. For those of you whose children will be home, enjoy every minute. For the rest, may you at least get a chance to talk over the holidays. Congrats Suzie...I got tears in my eyes reading your post. Knowing all the work that he put in to get to winging and all the prayers that went into it on your part! Have a marvelous time with him home! Love the picture and the note about his granddad.
Great news that so many have their loved ones with them for the holidays. I am one of the lucky ones also. DS and fiance here from Whidbey and other son and wife on way from Southern California. What a great Christmas present.
It is great news that so many are home for Christmas! Let's see some pictures.
Loved your picture Suzie, it brought tears to my eyes. So proud of all of our sons and daughters and feeling blessed this Christmas surrounded by all of mine. Merry Christmas Moms and James!
Had a great 2 weeks with son home from Pensacola with his twins and wife. Worried as they drove overnight last night too. But they made it, no trouble! Don't think we ever quit worrying about our kids!
NFAO, my LO just completed SERE before Christmas, the week it was really cold. He said they made sure and took good care of them, insuring they were hydrated, etc. He said with the winter issue gear, warmth was not one of the concerns. His training was also in ME. He said there have been two things he's gone through with the Navy so far that have lived up to their hype - one was the centrifuge and one was SERE. He said he learned a lot and is very glad he had it.
Hang in there and keep in touch with the group here. They are all VERY helpful!
Welcome CathieRenee! Happy New Year to all...so glad that many were able to enjoy their loved ones over the holidays. We had our son here for a week and it was wonderful. He was so happy to be home (and we were so happy to have him home!) and spent a good portion of the time on the couch holding his brand new niece. His siblings all came and stayed to maximize their time with him. It was just so great. We have his dog here with us for a few weeks and I know they are missing each other. She is a southern belle and does not quite know what to make of the foot of snow outside! Stay warm everyone!
Praying. One rescued crew member is confirmed dead. One crew member still missing. It was a training mission. What a grim reminder of the dangers inherent in their training. May God comfort and hold their families close. Blessings and protection over all our aviators.
