I meant to say "how long will sailors be deployed now?"
  • Vickyrun

Good Morning, TGIF! Wear Red Today!

    http://redshirtfridays.org/

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Deployments lengths can vary depending on where they are home ported. Japan is forward deployed so their deployments are not as long but they are more frequent. East coast sailors have longer deployments but our son is in San Diego now and this deployment is a 10 month one.

There is also a domino effect to deployments, if a ship is in the yards for maintenance or repairs and due to be completed at a certain date and it's not - it will effect the rest of the fleet and may keep a ship out longer as a result.

Then their are world events that may take place that also could send a ship out sooner or leave them on deployment longer than planned.

And then with the impact on the DOD budget, we are working with less ships so everyone is doing more ...much like our civilian lives!
  • Anti M

Deployment homecoming dates have been shifted because spouses posted the date too often on FB!   Not precisely an extension, but I can imagine what an uproar that caused.

  • Vickyrun

Hi all. Chrissy is still looking for someone to cross-deck with. I wish I could help her.

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Marie, I will be in Tampa this weekend --- close but committed plans with .molly.
Teresa, is your daughter a FC? Wondering if you are asking about SPY radar - if so C school is in Dahlgren, VA near DC. But I don't know of any FC schools in Pensacola so that is why I am asking if she is a FC.
Vicky - wish I had a good suggestion for Chrissy, read recently her ship is moving to Rota, Spain in 2014 ...some might be excited for that home port!

Missed our first call from our deployed sailor --- he was in Maylayasia. (Sp). :-0
  • Anti M

ETs work on that radar.  When I can get in touch with hubby, I'll ask him about it, he worked on something similar on amphibs, and radar is radar.  A good ET with a basic grasp of radar systems can pick another one up quickly.  Older system, but reliable.

  • Vickyrun

Yes Mary, if she could find someone who wants to go to Spain that would be great. She doesn't want to because her son lives in California. Living overses would make visitation more diffcult.

Sorry you missed that call. I hope he can call again soon.

  • MartiB_TX

My daughter is in BC and will stay in GL for att school and a school.  How long after PIR before they start att school?  I have heard att is 9 weeks long.  Do they generally get a break between att and A school so they can come home for a visit?  When do they find out if they will be FC or ET?

  • Cleaver6

She'll find out her rating towards the end of boot camp. She won't be able to come home. She'll get to see you for a few minutes right after PIR. Then, she'll have to go "across the street" to check in at her new command. She'll get liberty after that, beginning at about 1600. You'll get to spend time with her that weekend, unless she has to stand watch.

  • Anti M

Usually they get to go home on leave once they complete A school.

  • Cleaver6

Oops, yep, I misread your question. I don't believe they get to take leave during the break after ATT.

  • MartiB_TX

When do you find out if they have to stand watch?  We want to come for PIR but want to spend a little time with her too.

  • Anti M

You find out that day.  Chances are quite slim she'll have a watch.

  • Vickyrun

I got  a call form Chrissy, she thanked me fro her birthday present. And she seems to think that she will find someone to cross-deck with. She learned more about it recently. But she said she didn't have time to explain to me all the "Navy terms you don't know". She said she had to go shopping.

  • Anti M

They may still send her to the school if they need her trained in that radar.  She might report in and turn around with orders cut by the ship.  Never say never until she has her boots on the deck.  That isn't a classified piece of gear, she may be able to work on it without the training if her other skills are similar.

Let us know, I'm deeply curious now!

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Had the pleasure of spending some time this weekend with an FC chief as well as an ET that went Mustang and is now an LT. Good guys, interesting conversation.

Then I got a 45 minutes call from my favorite FC who made a stop in Singapore.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

Got some bittersweet news from my daughter. She got her orders today. Japan! Sad she'll be far away but happy for the adventure. Guess I need to start saving my pennies for a plane ticket
  • MartiB_TX

Thanks AntiM - A school for ET and FC is quite long, kind of disappointing that she will be gone sooo long.

  • Michelle

Hey ladies, does anyone know where family members can stay besides the Navy Lodge if they are visiting for longer then a week? I'm planning on visiting my husband in Great Lakes and staying for about 2 weeks or so with our daughter.

  • Tiff(Ship 11 Div 057)

I just moved here to great lakes with my husband and two kids if there are any moms or wives or girlfriends near by please message me I would love to make friends and have adults to talk too.

  • Tiff(Ship 11 Div 057)

Michelle I stayed at economy stay america I think in gurnee it has a kitchen inside there for people who are staying more than a weekend. Price per night wasn't bad either and its not but like 10 minutes from base.

I was treated wonderful at the Navy Lodge - but I have service dog and needed help..

  • MartiB_TX

My daughter will go to ATT school when she finishes boot camp then she will go to A school.  How does that work?  Does she take ATT school at the same place she will go to A school?  Is that time included in the time frame for A school (FC school is 41 weeks and ET school I think is 51 weeks is ATT school a part of that 51 or 41 weeks?)  I have heard it takes about 9 weeks to get through ATT school (is that correct?).  Will she locate somewhere for the time it takes to get through ATT school and then move to A school or will she only make one move? I know that all of her schooling up through A school will be in GL.  Sorry for all the questions but I just want to have it straight in my mind.

  • Vickyrun

Yes, they take both schools at the same place. They will both be at  the same place.   She won't have to move. All together it takes about one year. With holds it maybe longer.

  • MartiB_TX

ok thanks you Vickyrun.  I am glad we won't have to worry about more address changes during her time in GL once she gets to A school.

  • BeeBee (Son at GL A School)

Moving Ships and rooms is pretty much guaranteed. She'll be in one ship for ATT and will most likely move to another ship when she starts A school. Same base just different rooms and buildings. Holds are also very likely. My son graduated 1/25/13 and he is still on hold to start ATT. It is also possible to be on hold waiting for orders after A school. So I agree. Expect at least a year.
  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

I was expecting tons of holds for my son (PIR 4/22/11) but he only had a few weeks at the most each time and left GL almost exactly a year later for C school. His longest wait was for orders after C school and that was not long either.

  • 1proudmomma(SHIP 13 DIV366)

Hello everyone, my son is about to complete ATT school and is an FC.  I have been reading the comments of this group the whole time he has been in and would like to join.  Thanks for having me.

  • lkbmom245

Hello Ladies, I read the comments but am hardly ever on . My daughter has just a couple more weeks with her FC school. She says her group will move out of their current ship to another one on Base to wait for orders for C school. I don't know if it is different being an FC vs an ET. I am as anxious as she is to find out where her next stop is for her C school. What is a pain for her is after the holiday stand down her group is now in night school. They don't get done til probably 10:30 or 11:00 p . That is hard on them. The only "saving grace" is she gets to sleep a little bit later some days. They still have to be on Watch duty tho.

  • MartiB_TX

Wow Beebee that is a long time to be on hold. Why do they go on hold and what do they do while they are on hold? I thought att school was kind of self paced?
  • BeeBee (Son at GL A School)

They have to muster every work day and they clean or do whatever else needs done such as shoveling snow. :). They have to wait to class up just like every other class.

I don't know the reason for the delay I'm sure I'll probably never know not do I need to. Hurry up and wait...
  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

@bmom245 - I think alot of their jobs involve night rotations so they may have the classes at night to get them used to that lifestyle

  • sallyg

Hi everyone!  My son is AECF with a PIR 3/1 (yes! almost there).  I am wondering about liberty while they wait to class up and while they are in ATT school.  I won't be able to make PIR and I am dying to see him.  Would he have liberty every weekend? Or not? I need to request time off work soon if I want to visit GL in the next couple of months.

  • Anti M

His liberty will be restricted at first as he earns his privileges.  He wont' have liberty every weekend, as he will be on duty.  He will be in a four section duty rotation, so he will know his schedule not too long after he gets there and can tell you which weekends he has open.

    Liberty phases:

  • ellen0502

IKBmom245, They did switch ET's to day school and FC's to night school after stand down, but she'll get used to it. :) Your daughter will have most mornings to sleep. Ask her if she has gone to MidRats, my understanding it's the best "breakfast" around.

After A School they do move those who have comped out of school to another ship, usually the Cole. This is kind of a "holding ship" for those waiting for fleet and C School orders.

The ships they are in for ET's and FC's during school are generally separate from each other because of the different hours they keep. The night school sailors "afternoon" starts after school when most are sleeping, and ends when most of the others are waking up. In the summer after 11pm it's MidRats, ultimate frisbee, PT and studying for the "vampires", and the "day walkers" are sleeping...LOL

  • sallyg

Thanks for the info Anti M and ellen0502!

  • Concernedad

Yeah, my son said the first few weeks were worse than Boot Camp. They have very little privileges, so if you plan to visit, you definitely will want to wait a few weeks.

  • Vickyrun

Good morning,  This month the Navy honors all of the women who are serving and who have served in the Navy. Thank you for your sacrifice.

    Happy International Women's Day

  • Jayme

Hello!! Can someone tell me what C school is please? :) Also the length and location for FC?  They don't stay in GL for C school?

  • BeeBee (Son at GL A School)

C school is additional more specific training. No they don't stay in GL. It is for the specific weapon system they will be working on. After completion of A school they will (eventually) get orders which will determine their C school. There are two locations in VA and San Diego, CA is also a possibility.

If you take some time and read thoroughly the posts on this page you will learn a lot. Chances are at some point most of the questions you have someone has asked before.
  • NicksMom

Hi everyone, I'm a mom of a new sailor in ET who is a reservist. Can anyone tell me whether C school is required for reservists? Your help is appreciated.
  • Jesmom6

    Hi everyone,
I'm probably jumping the gun but I have a question about leave. My son leaves for boot camp on may 6th. He will then go on to A school for AECF. His sister is getting married December 14th 2013. He should be done with A school by then. His recruiter told him he will be able to come home for the wedding. I'm panicking that he won't be able to. His sister will be heartbroken if that's the case. Anyone have any input?
  • BeeBee (Son at GL A School)

Nothing is ever certain either way but my son is an FC and graduated BC on 1/25. I'm counting on that there is a possibility that he might still be in Great Lakes for Christmas stand down 2013.

I count on the following pattern
    Graduate BC
    Hold to class up
    ATT
    Hold to class up
    A school
Hold for orders to C school

10 day leave and travel to C school
    Hold to class up
    C school

My son's first hold was 4 weeks.

I count on worse case and will be happily surprised if it turns out better.
  • Concernedad

My son was able to come home after A School and waiting for his C School to open up.

  • Vickyrun

Don't believe anything the recruier says, they lie, Jesmom.  Your son won't know if he can get leave until he gets to A school.

  • Jesmom6

If I am correct, A school is 17 weeks long. If PIR is July 5th (or around that date) A school should end approximately November 1st. The wedding is December 14th. I guess we will just have to keep our fingers crossed!
  • Anti M

Realistically, not much of a chance. Why? Because that is a week before the holiday stand down begins, when the schools close for the holidays for two weeks. Three weeks of leave? Leaving a week before everyone else and coming back in the middle of stand down? He certainly can ask, and it might happen, but I wouldn't put money on it. Sorry to be pessimistic, but the Navy isn't big on variations to their routines.
  • Concernedad

Jesmom, his A School will depend on whether he's an ET or FC. There's not one for AECF. As to getting the time off, I'd trust Anti M more than I would the recruiter. It's not just a matter that recruiters' lie, often times they haven't a clue.
