AECF - FCs and ETs

For families that have a loved one serving the Navy as an FC or an ET. This is the place to share and learn more about their jobs and schools.

For subs - look for the SECF group.

Thanks, although I feel so cruel.

Plus you haven't factored in ATT which is several weeks long. Or indoc beforehand. But the stand down is the biggest issue, not much wiggle room there.
  • Jesmom6

Sorry. I'm really new to all of this. No one has been in the military since my Ickes in WWII. Terminology is like reading cryptographers. He's probably FC. So basically we can count on him not being there unless there's a delay or miracle. We will just have to wait and see!
  • Jesmom6

    I meant uncles! Autocorrect!
  • Concernedad

I wouldn't necessarily assume the worst. I just wouldn't suggest making any assumptions at all. It may work out perfectly, who knows. The one thing I've found true about the Navy is, it always seems to be changing.

  • Concernedad

It auto corrected to "ickes"?? What the heck, are you typing in German?

You say he's "probably FC"? There's no probably about it. If he's still at Boot Camp, or hasn't left yet (based on his PIR date) then it could go either way, and he will have no say about it. Just based on Needs of the Navy.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

Hi everyone, I officially have an ET at A school now..:)  LOTS to learn

  • Jesmom6

Again, like I said, I am new to the NAVY. I'm just going by what my son has told me so far, which hasn't been a whole lot. I find out a little more each day; that's why I joined N4M so I could get some answers. Thank you to everyone for your input.
  • Concernedad

We've all been there. Not a problem.

  • BeeBee (Son at GL A School)

Jesmom6 also just know that his contract may say FC or ET but they actually assign that in BC. Also things are told pretty straight around here. Better to prepare for probably not and be surprised with it working out than counting on it and being disappointed later.

Ask away with your questions the answers will be straight.
  • MyKidIsInNavy

so the actual time spent in A school including ATT and indoc is???  If ET I meant to say!

  • Donna

Jesmom6, how far do you live from GL?  If you live within 300 miles, he may be able to just come home for the weekend without it being an issue.  The best thing to do, is just not worry about it until after Thanksgiving, enjoy your time you still have with your son at home!

  • Jesmom6

We live in the poconos about 750 miles away so that won't work. But thanks! I'll just take it day by day and see what happens!
  • alane7

Hi everyone! I now have an FC in A school!

  • ellen0502

My son is an ET he was out of BC last April and only had two weeks hold before ATT, and less than a week for A School. He comp'd out of A School just before the holiday stand down, so he was in GL for 10 months, including BC.

Time there can vary depending on how fast each "school" starts for him.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

I would be so ok if my new ET gets delayed or on hold.  We live 45 miles from GL, so it would mean a lot of time for us to have with him..:)  I know he is a new drop, and he called last night after day 1 of indoc and said he can be on hold for ATT anywhere for 1 week to 1 month.  Guess we shall see how this all goes

  • Concernedad

Mykids, if you are catching the drift it is, there is no set answer. If I recall correctly, my son was at GL from 10/11 until 1/13. There was time he waited until ATT started, then time he waited until A School started, then time he waited until he left GL for C School. However, there are so many variables that could change the times from sailor to sailor.

BTW, my son is also an ET. Also, my son said indoc was the worst of all his time in the Navy thus far.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

I get it, but am curious why Indoc was the worst of all time?  Like worse then boot camp?

  • Concernedad

LOL! I don't know why, he didn't say. Perhaps it caught him off guard as he thought he was through the tough stuff, but he did say they were more strict on things they were allowed to do. Perhaps it's the having your cell phone and laptop and not being allowed to use it? Perhaps it's the standing guard of a closet or elevator? I don't know.

I do know he couldn't wait to move on from GL. Said it is the strictest of Naval Bases (although I'm not sure if he was basing that on opinions of others?)

  • MyKidIsInNavy

hummm...mine has his laptop and cell both and hasn't said he cannot use them...maybe there are rules being put in place during indoc that didn't apply during PIR liberty weekend?

  • Anti M

Glakes is a strict base. Indoc is boring and the beginning of their phase one liberty.... many of them have no clue it will be so strict after boot camp, they expect more freedoms. Cell phone usage is restricted, and there's no wifi in the barracks. Hauling the laptop around on liberty is no fun.
Some ships may put extra restrictions on the use of electronics, many sailors find this frustrating.
  • MyKidIsInNavy

hummmmm...guess I will be having to wait and find out what is up and happening once I talk to my Sailor.

  • julie

My sons PIR was March 1st, He is very happy with the way things are going, he is on hold for ATT right now, having to do a lot of sweeping. Other than that no complaints. He is an FC, or will be. lol He calls every night. During the day he just locks up his phone. When he gets in he'll check his messages and return calls. He said no one told him he couldn't use it, but it is his choice to not have it on him, that way no temptation to use it or answer it. As far as his lap top goes him and the other guys are spliting the cost of internet. He told me it was nothing like bootcamp!!!! Therefor he loves it!!! LOL

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Hope everyone is well and a big welcome to our new members.

Agreed Anti M - GL is a strict base because it is a training command but internet has been allowed in the barracks at A school for a number of years now. With four to a room they generally agree to split the bill. When Nick checked in after PIR and asked if he could have cell and phone - they said bring "Em in. Just like any school, there are rules were yu can use them. Cell phone connection was icky at times - we would say, go stand by the window so we can hear you!
  • Anti M

I knew internet was allowed, sorry, meant to say that unless he gets roomies who already have it, they have to pay for it and/or wait until it gets put in the room.

  • Vickyrun

Good morning, Happy 6th Birthday to Chrissy's Navy brat (my grandson) Aidan and Happy Pi day to all the math lovers.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

My new Sailor is on hold for ATT now too, but has his laptop and cell and he and his roomates are having comcast installed today as a matter of fact.  So they must be able to use the internet.  Now to figure out how long the hold is..:)

  • sallyg

Mine is happy with being on hold for ATT, too.  I'm glad he's getting a good rest after BC and if he gets a bit bored waiting for school to start, it might even be a good thing.  He just got his computer and didn't complain about not having internet access.

  • Tiff(Ship 11 Div 057)

My sailor was on hold an entire month. So your sailors might be that lucky!! They can buy the internet or split it with roommates my husband did that. The internet on base was so slow.

  • magsmom

When my daughter was in Great Lakes, she went with the Clear internet provider...they were the only ones who really provided the speed and reliability that she wanted...I think she tried a tmobile device from the REX and it was slow.  I think the Clear service was about $50 a month...

  • Vickimed(AECF-ET)

Hi Moms! I haven't been on in a couple of months. So just catching up and checking in. Congrats to all Moms of new Sailors. Welcome and enjoy the ride. It is exciting and emotional. What you feel when they left for BC never leaves you. You just learn how to handle it. For all those that tested yesterday I hope they did very well and I wish them luck. Son has been in Norfolk for the last 3 months going to IFF (identify friend or foe) school. Hubby and I took advantage of him being on the east coast and DROVE to Norfolk last weekend to see him before he leaves to join his ship in WA. (13 hour drive one way, but it was worth it) Yesterday he aced his final and now has his IFF certificate. His brother responded and told him he always knew he was IFFY(hahaha)  <NMH>>> to all the new Moms. Your pride in your sailor is just going to grow.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

The good thing for me is the longer at GL my Sailor is the better...it is a 40 minute drive from my house to his ship!!!  wooohoooooo...so even if he doesn't want to get held up at GL long...it makes me HAPPPYYYYY  lol  just don't tell him that..:)

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Hope everyone is well and hearing lots from your sailors.

Lucky, lucky Mom - MykindsisinNavy!  Enjoy every visit you can because one day they go to the fleet and then you just treasure seeing their email in your inbox!

VickiMed!  Your son is too funny, IFFY huh?  Congrats to Chris, so glad that you got a chance to go visit with him before he heads out.

Cannot remember who our son used for cable in GL but in Dahlgren (Aegis FC school)  our son had comcast for cable in when he went they were scheduled to pick up the box the day before he shipped out.  They did not, so he brought it home for us to mail to them.  Took MONTHS for them to credit his account and not without a ton of calls. I still hate cable companies!! LOL

We are feeling very blessed, got phone calls two days in a row from our sailor.  First time he has been on land in four weeks.  The email communications have been fairly good so far but nothing like hearing their voice <3

  • MyKidIsInNavy

My Son talked to his roommates and now they have comcast and even cable TV in their room...LOL  go figure, we also gave him a new Iphone for PIR...he is way hooked up now and no excuses for not contacting Mom n Dad hey???

  • Anti M

Hah, a new iPhone just means he'll get orders to Japan where it won't work...

  • sallyg

Today I got a text from mine (on hold for ATT) saying he starts school tomorrow.  Anyone else hear that?

  • MyKidIsInNavy

yes sallyg...My Son also told me yesterday that ATT will be starting today for him and as of Friday he was told it could be a 1 month hold or longer, and then late yesterday, he told me it now Starts today!!

  • MyKidIsInNavy

Anti M...I figure if the Iphone works for now, then I am happy.  If he gets shipped eventually to a place it will not work, no worries.  There will probably be an Iphone 10 by then anyways and this one will be out dated

  • sallyg

MyKidsInNavy, yes, I guess nothing is for sure. I am sorry that it means less time for you with your son nearby. (I think mine would've happily been on hold for another couple of weeks.)

  • tiffanyk2010

Yes, I'm in the San Diego area :)
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Is everyone using the Zip plus 4 code for your sailor's mail? Alot of the commands are trying to get that message out saying if you do not use it - they may not get your letters or packages.

It is due to cuts and the way they are handling military mail. I do not know more than that but iI know our son made a point of telling us months ago and lately I have seen three or four ships get that message out as well.
  • Jayme

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Hi ladies! Just dropped in to say hello and welcome the new AECF members. Tell your sailors it's a long road to travel but well worth it. Hang in there.

My son is a FC on his first deployment. He is on the USS Gonzalez.- "Fighting Freddy."
  • MyKidIsInNavy

Jayme, what is the facebook group you linked do different from this N4M's page?  or is it just for facebook people?  And is it run by the same people?

  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

I mailed a pkg from oregon to the middle east using the if it fits it ships box - and it got there in 6 days!

  • sallyg

Hi everyone!  Does anyone know if ATT school ends May 17?  My son began ATT on March 19, so by my calculation if ATT is nine weeks, he could be finishing on May 17. I'm wondering because we are planning to visit him that weekend, and I want to know if it would be a bad time. Might he have to move?  Or change his duty rotation?  Thanks for any info you can offer!

  • RebeccaProudWife

Unfortunately 9 weeks isn't set in stone. My husband's ATT looks like it will be closer to 10 weeks. Your sailor should have his end date...

He should keep the same duty rotation. He can earn a duty free weekend if he gets 2 perfect inspections. Yes, he might have to move based on the ship, they try to have all the night students around the same quarters.

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

    Happy Easter to all.

Was so hoping to hear from our deployed son but that so did not happen. His last call suggested it would be awhile before the next call. :-(

We have had some boxes take a week or two and others a month or better. Just depends on the replenishments, etc. I usually allow for a month and just happy it makes it to them.
  • Tinker

Happy easter to all. My son will be finishing FC A school next week and I was wondering who else has an SA in his class
  • sallyg

Thanks Rebecca!  Your info was very helpful.

  • MyKidIsInNavy

Hi Rebecca!!!  Yes I have a Sailor now and he is also in ATT right now.  I haven't talked to you in a long time, how are you doing???
