Hi everyone, our son arrived in Gulfport this past week for combat training.

Sharon - when our son left Port Hueneme 2 weeks ago, he flew out of Oxnard Airport because it was easier and didn't really cost anymore to do it that way. because of the cost of gas for a car from base to LA airport and time as well.
  • Kelleypen

BarbaraC... that's where my boy is heading too... and he is expecting 10 mos as well. Yours must be AirDet too.
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

My son was supposed to join NMCB 133 in their deployment last week...now they're waiting for volcanic ash to clear so they can fly over. Good news for mom, but Tyler is so frustrated.
  • Kelleypen

I had skype to Africa too

Hi all, my son Rob is going for his physical on Thursday and tells me he wants to be a Seabee so I am here to learn. Have a great day!

Hi all, I'm one of the original members of the site and used to belong to the group but got too...group heavy over the last couple of years. We have one son that is on a destroyer, a son in law that is currently in Iraq and a nephew who is a Seabee Reservists with the NMCB26, he just returned from two weeks of field training in California and will be heading to A'stan in August. I've been following the groups for a few weeks and today seen this photo and know many of you are with the NMCB133 and thought you might like to see a recent photo. My nephew is a BUCA, he PIRed two years ago and did his A school in Gulfport. This will be his first deployment on his eight year contract.

    Hello all,
My daughter Kayla leaves for bc on the 16th of June and after will be off for her training for CE... never thought she would ever do anything in construction!! Her dad is in that field and she has not ever had interest!! lol I guess it pays to know all of the tools and anything related to construction. Now she is excited about this venture.

I have another kiddo going in Sept, but he is not going Seabee. He will go in as a demo diver if he gets his PT done.
I am glad to be here this is a great site for support. This is new for us, I came from an Army family.
  • Tobianne

Thanks everyone. Glad to be here.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

staci, your son needs to let his school know that he wants his ticket booked with a stop in WA, the travel office can coordinate it for him and then he only pays the difference. Our son did that recently and it cost him less than a $100.

He is getting some nice orders, congrats to him.
  • Kelleypen

Proud wife, my son is in the 11th. Go ahead and PM me and ask away. Kelleypen
  • Kelleypen

Boy deployed Sunday. He'll be gone 11 mos. sigh.
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Sara: Feel free to vent about whatever you need to and tell all you want...we're here to support during any situation.
  • Tobianne

Oh my I thought the Seabees would have to go to a base here first... guess I did not realize my kiddo could be leaving the USA right out of A school. Wow, I think my daughter is up for anything, maybe not 3 yrs but its awesome to be stationed in such a beautiful place and she is adaptable thank God.
Good luck to both of your sons ladies.
  • Tobianne

oh I knew they could go any place I thought they would be stationed in the U S for a while... my daughter and I have already had the whole if you go over seas talk.
The impression I got from her recruiter was more of a basic, A school, base (for possibly a year) then possibly over sea. See how this is much better than the recruiter telling us what they really don't know about?!! I was warned to listen lightly as they may have no idea about the jobs that the kids get!!
  • Barbara C

    Happy Mother's day to all.
My son deployed last Sunday. He called late Saturday night to tell us he was leaving Sunday morning and his deployment address had changed but he didn't have the new one with him. Does anyone have the address for the NMCB 11 detachment that is staying on Guam for this deployment? I would like to send him some mail. Also I bought a magazine subscription for him and it is going to the first address. That's what I get for being efficient. Ha Ha. Maybe I was jumping the gun. I'll know better next deployment.
  • Kelleypen

    Barbara... I have it. Kelley
  • Kelleypen

Yvette---use the flat rate postal boxes whenever you can. It helps save money if you really need to stuff it full. Don't send chocolate to hot climates. By the time your Seabee gets it, everything in the box will be chocolate coated.
  • Nita

    Hi All,
I am looking for moms that have loved ones in NMCB 5 Unit, Charlie Company. Just want to connect and looking for some much needed support. It has been really hard the past weeks, not knowing anything. Hope to talk to someone soon. Thanks!
  • RobinM

Hello Everyone, my son is at his A school base, but doesn't start until next week. I guess I too am kind of surprised to hear that he could be going just about anywhere after A school. I was under the impression he would be stationed stateside for a duty station and then shipped from there. Guess I have lots to learn! So combat school doesn't necessarily start right after A school?
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Just heard from my son in 133. He's fine and everything is good. Great way to start my day!
  • MVP59

Hello Everyone, just joined this group, I'm so excited that this group exits. My son is in A school, but he doesn't start classes til next. He tells us that when his done with A school, his in the reserves and will be based out of New Jersey, does anyone know where this base is located in NJ?
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

Hello Seabee Moms. Maybe one of you can help me. My son graduates BC next month and goes straight to Port Humene for A School, CM Seabee. He is only 22 and is a reservist. He tried to get into active duty but was told there were no openings. What do you think his chances are into getting active duty?
  • RobinM

My son is 19 and went in active as a SeaBee. He did, however, have to wait for a spot to open up before he could sign his papers to leave, but his wait was only a few days if I remember correctly. He had an initial delay because he broke his collar bone, so he had to resign his papers. He's at his A school now.
  • Tobianne

My daughter is going in as active duty. I understand from the recruiters here in Ohio, they are not even taking any more males as they have no jobs for them right now. It will be around January when they would open back up. This is pretty much across the US. Not just for Seabees. Any males wishing to join are being referred to the reserves and possibly a spot could open before they leave. However the last part my kiddo's told me but they are with the recruiters a lot.
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

Carol, I guess its true the old saying that they will tell you anything to get you to join. When he went to MEPS, and they told him no active duty slots were open, he came real close to backing out, had a steady job waiting. The person at that station called someone else in (TC said he had brass on)who convinced him that after a couple of drill, something would open up and that was the way he had done it himself. Can't stand the thought of him going in and out, in and out....
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

....but thanks to all for the responses. I'm not up on military stuff and am learning as I go. Pray to God that all this works out for him.
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

Carol, what reservist sight can you direct me to?
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

Another thing the MEPS person said is that it was a critical needs position, and it included a nice bonus. I think that was what pulled him in.
  • RobinM

Hello TammieV and j'smom. My son started his A school today in MO as well and is an EO Seabee. j'smom....it's Robin from the meet and greet. We never did see your son at the airport, so good we didn't have his stuff. My son didn't leave until just after 1pm on Wed.
TammieV...what's the graduation like? Was just curious. My son is supposed to graduate on 7/23. Good to have people here with kids going through the same stuff!! The support is awesome!
  • RobinM

My son had to wait a week before his classes started for EO training school after he got to the base. Don't know about how often the schools start. Sorry.
  • RobinM

Hello Carol. We had a very nice trip down there a few years ago right before Katrina. I'm afraid everything has changed since then, so any info we would have wouldn't be much help at this point. But please share what you find out when you're down that way. We will likely be headed that way again when our son is donw there for the same in a few months. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but enjoy your time with your son. You shouldn't have any problems finding things to do. Have a safe trip!
  • RobinM

Yeah our son was down there for Seabee training with the US Navy Sea Cadets and we went down for his graduation. We were actually there for longer than planned because of car trouble. Had it not been for Katrina, I could have given you a lot of ideas on places to go cause we drove to New Orleans as well. But after, well you know...
  • Kelleypen

I'm flying into N.O. It's 180$ cheaper round trip from SLC than to Gulfport. Greyhound bus round trip is 35$. Cheap French Quarter hotel a night in N.O. on each side of the trip is still cheaper than flying directly to Gulfport, plus I get to see a historic city I've never seen before. As far as Gulfport goes, I'm guessing the beaches are about to get oily. I hope not, but it looks that way. That's about all I can help you with.
  • Kim

Hi Ladies, our son is in Gulfport too and has completed combat training and we are planning a 4th of July trip to see him. He wanted us to come this weekend but we couldn't because our daughter graduated high school last night. Any ideas for a hotel. We would also like to see New Orleans too.
  • Kelleypen

Kim, fly into New Orleans, stay overnight, then take the Greyhound to Gulfport. That's what I'm doing, and it costs me less than flying into Gulfport.
  • Dona

Hi, N4M's. I have been off for awhile-been cruising the Caribbean with family, 2 of our grandchildren. I have been reading about the reservists/active duty, etc. Our son has been in almost a year now active. He was DEP for a year prior. He just made E4,CM3 , and had a birthday-all during the week were gone! He is still in Coronado.
  • Kim

Kelley - are plans are to drive down as of right now but if we decide to fly, its good to know to fly into new orleans.
Carol - I'll check out the Marriott today and our son said he was going to check out hotels for us too as they have this weekend off. We can't wait to see him and go to New Orleans. We want to walk around French Quater too.
  • Kim

    God bless our Seabees
  • Much Trouble

Hi Peyton! If this will be new to you, you may want to check out: Anyone with Sailors/Soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan. They are a mixed group of Moms who are wonderful at helping you control the panic. They also have great advice about shipping goodies and so on. I agree that I'm proud of ALL our kids in the military, and especially the ones playing in the Sandbox.
  • Travis' Mom Cindy Ship11/Div212

Hey, Dona. Just browsing in here. My son went in as a reservist, graduates BC 6/11, then straight to Port Huneme, CA, plans on going active as Seabee CM asap. Was it hard for yours to go active?
  • Dona

No-they kept telling him during the year of DEP that he might get in earlier, but he didn't. He graduated BC 7/31/09, went straight to Port Hueneme for A school, then Coronado. Good luck to your son! Keep in touch!
  • Kelleypen

My step dad is dying. His heart function is 30% and his kidneys are 20%. He's 82. My mom's been gone for 16 mos. I don't know how long he has left, but we called the Red Cross and they found my son in Cambodia so he can call and talk to his grandpa before he dies.
  • Tobianne

Kellypen, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family in your time of sorrow. Praying that your sons call lifts your father spirits and helps him. It is a horrible thing being far away from home when this happens. some times just an embrace can guide us.I send good wishes to you in hopes that you have the strength and courage to get through this.

Tyler passed the exam and is now GM3..WooHoo...He seems to be doing well in the desert...can't wait for the next few weeks to pass so he can be back in the USA!
  • Kim

Brenda, thanks for the suggestion. We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express, Long Beach. We are very excited for our trip to see our seabee.

    Seabee's
Hello all, I am a new mom. Just have a question. My son's recruiter wants him to start as a reservist. How does this work out. My son is interested in the electric part of the seabee's. He has passed all his exams, So many questions as parents we have. If he does this will he be active sooner? We don't have a problem for him to wait the normal 6-9 months for the waiting. But I can tell my son is really ready to do this. Any info you can share would be apprecited
    Kbondy.
  • kbondy

    Joanne,
The recruiter says he will be active quicker if he goes into the reserves. Also wondering if the recruiter just needs his numbers for the month...
I was just wondering if anyone one else experienced this too.
    Kbondy

I'm posting from the library... my step dad is in congestive heart failure, but it could take anywhere from hours to months. We're staying for the week, then going home. I'm just hoping my step sisters are here for him next so that he isn't alone.
