I got my husband's form letter. I was prepared to wait a while for the box and the letter, but it all came rather quickly. he left 9/10 and i recieved his box 9/13 and then recieves the form letter 9/17 (yesterday) and his PIR is 11/2. It is a week before we both thought it would be. I'm rather optimistic now about the whole thing, and excited that next week is week 3 so he should start receiving my letters by then (i sent them all today). i still miss him like crazy but i am also so proud of him and so excited to see him graduate.

Congrats briana. How did graduation go?

  • MorningGlory (SHIP 14 DIV 343)

BEST VOICEMAIL EVER. I wish that he could have been given a phone home time that wasn't during rehearsal, but at least he knew I couldn't pick up.

  • My sailor's ladybug (356)

Still kinda new to the area. Looking to make some new friends. We have two boys (8 & 2). My husband is on the USS Newport News. Is there any other SO on the same boat?

  • Juliette

    mayersr10,

My boyfriend graduates bootcamp this friday. I will fly out tomorrow, but I will be sure to let everyone know how it went and maybe I'll be able to give a few tips to ladies who will be attending PIR in the coming weeks based on my experiences. This will be my first time on a plane EVER so wish me luck ladies!

    Briana

  • mayersr10

I usually write about two pages but it's front and back. Sometimes it's shorter and other times it's longer.

  • mayersr10

Briana: My bad I totally spaced that it wasn't Friday yet haha. Good luck with the flight :)

  • briana&isaiah forever

Oh and Juliette: I wouldnt worry so much about the length of the letters. Our SRs live for the mail they get while at bootcamp. I finally received the Sailor call yesterday, during which my boyfriend thanked me for every single letter that I wrote. Just write what you feel and what's on your mind. Your SR will want to know everything that's going on as those letters are his only connection to the outside world. Personally my letters would get a little lengthy at times, but I never got a complaint from my boyfriend, so I dont think you will either! ;)

  • abuon18

The longest I've written was 4 pages 2 front & back). They love their letters & my husband would stay up as long as he could to read them. It's the best part of their day.... I don't think they can be too long! And he still has them all.
  • Anti M

@briana... do you need tips for getting through airport security smoothly?

  • Brod4586

Juliette my husband Said they usually read their letters at night I write him every day sometimes only a page sometimes four pages. He is almost done and i haven't gotten a complaint from him yet ;] so I say write to you can't write anymore!
  • Juliette

awesome, thanks guys! i just write down everything...and sometimes i feel like im constantly repeating about how i much i miss him LOL...hopefully he don't mind...but he'll surely be getting alot of letters from me....so i guess im not the only one! :)

  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Juliette you're not alone at all :)! I find myself going on and on in my letters as well!My husband doesn't mind it one bit! He says it gives him comfort :)!
  • CHN-B

Juliette: I just write. There r days where my letters r only 2 pages but other days they're 12+ pages. =)
My suggestion would be to use black ink. At "lights out", if he didn't have time to read ur letters, he can still read them by "red light" in their barrack. Any other ink color may be hard to read under this light. They have holiday routine plus limited time before "lights out" to read. But there r days when they don't have time & can only read after "lights out". But I'm sure he will be thrilled & find time to read ur letters, no matter how long. =)
  • CHN-B

Addition: the only thing to remember is, if the envelope is thick, he might have to open it in front of his PO/Chief just to be sure there isn't anything he's not suppose to have (nude pics, etc.) but they don't read the letters. Mine only had to do that once cuz I included some postcards but he said it was no biggie.
  • CHN-B

Congrats briana&isaiah! U'll have a great time. Get to the gate early! Safe travels!!
  • Juliette

Ok great. Thanks guys for the tips. I've packed about 4 letters in each envelope, so hopefully they won't have to scan anything, they're not to thick. I'll definitely put some pictures throughout here and there....and 12 pages or more is awesome! LOL. Ok, well I thought my 3 plus pages were overboard lol. My fiance was always a whiner if I texted him too much because he hated typing and crap....so I'm assuming the letters will be a different story lol. I just write and ramble forever....it just gives me comfort since i can't text or call him when i want now :(

  • CHN-B

I was traveling overseas so I had a lot to share w him. But there r days where the only thing I could think of to say was "I love u & miss u & wish u were home". I wanted to use my own handwriting so I wrote by hand rather than use Word then print. My right index finger is still callasted but it's all worth it!! Those love letters will always remain with us.
  • Juliette

oh i know exactly what you're saying! my hands start aching after the first few sentences because i'm so not used to hand writing letters anymore ... but i write them all by hand as well - it makes it more authentic and genuine....i never wanted to type them! but i look forward to always having them once he's through bootcamp...it's something to look back on....i just hope i get some cutesy love letters out of him lol....it's so nice reading stuff like that, especially with all this time apart from each other!

  • CHN-B

Buy a good pen (smooth ink flow w a soft grip, not necessarily expensive).
Lol - I'm sure u'll get some cutesy love letters frm him. ;-) If its not out-right plastered on all the pages, it will be there subtile, between the lines but it will be genuine & ur heart will melt. This whole process has brought me & mine so much closer, more than I even thought was possible (didn't know there was still room to get closer). Ive been on cloud 9 since I saw him at PIR.
  • Le Shelby

Juliette, I literally sent my boyfriend a whole notebook while he was in boot camp...i filled it with pictures and little letters on each page while he was gone and sent it to him the second to last week of boot camp. So dont worry about packing letters too thick (except for the stamp part...I accidentally stuck too many in one envelope and i didnt know i hadnt put enough stamps until it returned two weeks later with a "Return to sender" stamp)

  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

So if I wrote like 5 pages a day with about 5 pictures in it should I worry about putting more than one stamp?
  • dukelvr

Anndrya- You should definitely put at least 2 stamps on it. You don't want to chance it getting returned back to you. When I wrote my bf 4 pages (no pictures included) I would always put 2 stamps.

  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

    Ok thanks!!!
  • CHN-B

This has more to do with the weight of ur letter with the post office (not RTC). if u have more than two pages I would throw on an extra stamp. If u want to be sure, go to the post office & use the automated machine (usually near the P.O. Boxes) to weigh the letter. It will tell u how much stamp u need. If u don't have enough postage it will get returned to u (if u have ur return address on it).
  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

Mail came today still no letter with the address day 8 since he's left this really sucks!
  • abuon18

Don't forget they don't have much space to store personal items including letters and pictures... My husband actually mailed me back some of his paperwork to create more space for himself. One tip I learned from here actually was instead of mailing a bunch of pictures, print them on plain white paper and write your letters around them! I would print 2-3 on a page and send him 1 or 2 front and back pages. Also never had to use more than 1 stamp with those and they never got returned.
  • CHN-B

That's what I did w pictures too. Copied & pasted onto a Word doc - u can fit 6-8 pics on a sheet of paper.
Mine said he had an AB drawer?? & that was private (they did not inspect) also under lock n key.
  • Jesse's Girl

Anndrya, I feel your pain! I'm on day 14 and still nothing but a box of clothes that made me cry. This sucks...
  • CHN-B

Jesse's Girl: totally feel u. Been there. It's very hard & painful when ur at the beginning. Hang in there. Each day just brings u closer - to his letters, his PIR, & his arms. =)
  • ms.bre_5

  • Juliette

Anndrya, I feel you....I'm on day 8 as well and still no letter in the mail. I have so many letters to send him out! I'm anxious to see when his PIR date is...his division, ect...It's really making me mad now. I want to come home finally, check my mail and get that form letter....how much longer can we wait? Ugh...

  • TxNavyWife

    Hey ladies,

I'm seeing a fair number of posts about boot camp.

My SR graduates bootcamp next weekend, but I thought I'd share my experience... I didn't get my SR's form letter until the second week in, so hang in there and keep writing. Stock pile those letters til you get the address! My SR LOVED receiving a pile of letters on their first mail day. My SR's division wasn't able to send a personal letter out for a while. It was a solid 3 weeks before I heard anything from him. I've written all but 2 days the whole time (tonight is letter number 44!) that's a lot of stamps! BUT do keep in mind they have VERY limited space. I actually sent some larger (6x9) envelopes about half way through so he could send back some of the letters I'd sent to clear some space for the new stuff coming in. He didn't want to have to throw any of them away. There's no guarantee they'll get to use an envelope like that, but it worked just fine for my SR. I received both envelopes back stuffed with cards and letters he'd received. He kept the pictures and I assume his favorite letters.  The worst that will happen is they won't get used and a few envelopes will be discarded.

At the end of this, my advice is keep yourself VERY busy and the time will fly by! And practice patience, the SR's have very little control over their time, it's not always their fault if they can't write as soon as you'd like them to :)

  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

Thank u! Makes me feel better. Are they the ones who send the form? Like is the address in their handwriting?
  • TxNavyWife

Yes. They address the envelope. They MIGHT sneak in a little note on it... My SR said "read ALL of this and give the address to my parents too, miss you." It's a very impersonal letter though.

  • Jenn_NicksWifey

Anndrya - It is something they have handwritten, but you probably won't recognize it.  They learn "recruit handwriting" which is a sort of block letter thing.  I worked at the same company as my husband for 3 years and did data entry of his work.  I KNOW his handwriting.  I did not recognize it. Of course, his writing is always pretty sloppy, but it was very, very neat in everything he wrote at bootcamp.  I showed it to his mom and she couldn't believe it either.  lol.

  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Anndrya my husband's handwriting was on his form letter :)! I was soo happy to see his handwriting♥ Just seeing that made me feel better :)!
  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

Ok cool!! Aww it's going to make me cry! So he knows when it's coming then. Do some people get theirs faster because their RT sends it earlier? Like do some send it a few days earlier than others?
  • Juliette

reading all of this is going to make me cry LOL....just to see his handwriting as you said is enough for me...god, i really wish i could get this letter before the weekend :(

  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Anndrya I really don't know if sone get theirs earlier or not, I don't want to give you the wrong info. I do believe some may get theirs before others but I'm not sure! It seemed like I waited forever b/c I saw different posts from others saying they received their loved ones letters and box of clothing. It really didn't take that long though, I think I just stayed too antsy lol. Juliette you guys hang in there once you see their writing and get their actual graduation date you will feel better :)! It seems like the days will fly by once you get the info♥♥ I sleep in my husband's shirts at night and it gives me comfort:)
  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

    I meant *some*
  • Anndrya (Ship-13 div-366)

Oh ok thank u tho!! But yea I'm just getting so impatient especially seeing people who already got theirs! Ughh. Oh well just gotta stay strong. But yesss I do too! I sleep in his shirts EVERYNIGHT I slept in the one he sent back in the box and it still smelt just like him! Made me cry alot but It felt so comforting
  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Ahhh that's the one I sleep in too! Lol :)! Just be strong it will be here before you know it♥♥
  • CHN-B

Yes, it's them who fill out the form letter. I'm glad mine printed very clearly. I've heard from some who were trying to make out the writing on theirs.
  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Have any of you used hotwire.com or expedia.com to purchase airline tickets? Also have any of you stayed at the comfort inn in Waukegan IL? I'm trying to make my travel arrangements, and would like a nice hotel close to base :)!
  • CHN-B

I've used Expedia for plane tickets & room rental in the past. It's pretty easy to use. I've heard the Comfort Inn is nice (7 mins away), my friend stayed there. But an Inn is an Inn. I stayed at Red Carpet Inn (just 2 mins, a mile straight shot down from base). It's nothing to write home about. It's inexpensive, clean, & a "good enough" place. If u decide to stay there, i recommend asking for a room upstairs. My main reason for staying there is the distance to/from base. Didn't want to waste precious liberty time driving around. There are nicer places like the Marriott about 15 mins away.
  • Byron's wifey (ship 12 div 348)

Ok cool :)! Thank you! I don't want to waste any time either and would like to take the shuttle to and from base :)! Thanks for the info!!
